Five persons including a teenager and an octogenarian were on Wednesday rescued after a three – storey building collapsed in Lagos.

The incident occurred at 4, Odunfa Street, Adeniji Adele, Lagos Island, at about 9:00am.

Although it could not be ascertained how many persons were in the building before it caved in, most of the residents expressed fears that their neighbours were still trapped underneath the rubble.

Before the building described as barrack collapsed, some of the residents, particularly those on the third floor were said to have escaped through the window.

While they were outside, they claimed that other neighbours trapped in the rubble had contacted them appealing to be rescued.



At the time The Nation visited, four persons have been rescued and operations were ongoing as two excavators were being used to create holes between the slabs, to create easy access for trapped persons.

The octogenarian, who was identified as a grandmother, was rescued over four hours after the collapse.

She was carried on a stretcher, with an oxygen mask placed on her mouth and nostrils before she was conveyed to a standby Lagos State Ambulance Service (LASAMBUS).

The Nation observed that the grey-haired woman, though covered with dust, looked strong and attempted to clean some of the dusts from her ears.

A combined team of Police, Army, Nigerian Security and Civil Defence Corps (NSCDC), Lagos State Emergency Management Agency (LASEMA), National Emergency Management Agency (NEMA), federal and state fire service, Lagos State Building Control Agency (LSBCA) and Lagos Safety Commission were on ground to manage the situation.

Speaking to reporters at the scene, General Manager LSBCA, Shola Aderigbebe, said the building was marked for integrity test and 14 days ultimatum served the residents.

He decried the lack of compliance by residents on safety directives, noting that 1,104 buildings have been sealed in the last four months.

He said: “We have been dealing with all distress buildings, but it is pathetic that residents do not yield to warnings. For this building, we have served them 14 days ultimatum.

“The ultimatum has expired before today. We asked them to conduct Structural Stability Test (SST) and they agreed. We were still waiting for them to conduct the test before the building collapsed.

“The test would have helped us ascertain if the building was distressed or not. Some buildings can be defective but when the test is conducted, we will be able to know if the building can be renovated or demolished.

“We have opened a file for the building. Marking a building does not mean we are demolishing because no building can be demolished until a test has been conducted to ascertain its stability.

“In the last four months, we have sealed 1,104 building for lack of compliance. Some are illegal structures, while some are distressed.”

The LASEMA’s boss, Micheal Akindele, said the four persons earlier rescued sustained minor injuries and were taken to Lagos Island General Hospital.

He said they have not been able to ascertain the number of occupants in the building, adding that no one could confirm whether or not, people were still in the rubble.

“We cannot say if people are trapped or not because we have not gotten to ground zero. But so far, five persons have been rescued and were are still working. All agencies responded in good time and we are doing everything possible to ensure lives and properties are saved,” he said.

Assistant Director, Federal Fire Service,  Okone Macauly said weak structure was responsible for the collapse.

“Initially we rescued about four people that were slightly injured from the building. We haven’t seen any victims.

“The challenges are the equipments used to bring the debris out. It is an old building but as time went on, they have been increasing it.

“The cause hasn’t been ascertained, but the building is weak. The landlord was informed as at last month and he did not do anything. I believe as at yesterday (Tuesday), people were packing out of the building not knowing it was going to collapse this morning.

However, residents who admitted that the government had issued warnings on the building, blamed the owners and caretaker for negligence.

The 2-storey gallery Church structure, was packed full an hour to the official start time. The over flows were also packed full, long before the commencement of the Concert. The Church having obtained government permit to temporarily block the street, setup a projector on the road and more people were able to participate and bask in the glory of the concert, as every available space within the compound was occupied!

Joe Praize came with so much anointing as he drenched everyone within and outside the auditorium in an overflow of God’s Spirit. Ministering alongside Joe Praize were international Gospel Artistes and Comedians like Chris Shalom, Ada, Bishop Chikancy, Victor Ike (aka Livingwater), Nolly, Preye, Nosa and a host of others.

The iTestify Benin City was a huge success as an estimated 5,000 people from around the City were in attendance. Sixty people got born again and filled with the Holy Spirit. Some of the New converts were set free from demonic oppression and baptized the next day.

In her words, as she led the souls to Christ, the highly esteemed Zonal Pastor of Christ Embassy Benin Zone 3, Pastor Mary Owase said, “all that counts in life is the relationship you have with God by Jesus Christ.”

It was a most glorious and exciting event that would remain fresh in the minds of everyone that attended for a long time to come, testified the Group Pastor of New Benin Group, Pastor Oma Ola-Jeffrey.

One thing is certain, everyone that attended testified of God’s grace, love, might and glory. Halleluia!

The Chelsea manager, Jose Mourinho has
insisted that the Stamford Bridge side cannot so
away with his services even if the team ends in
mid-table.
Speaking ahead of this afternoon’s clash against
Aston Villa at the Bridge, Mourinho he remains
the right man to turn the tide around for the
Premier League defending champions.
Boastful Jose Mourinho says Chelsea cannot sack
him.
According to Skysports, his remarks may not be
unconnected to the first vote of confidence of
Roman Abramovich’s 12-year ownership
recently, where the team’s board declared
maximum support for the coach.
On whether he would still be in charge if they
finish in mid-table, the manager said: “ Yes” and
quickly added: “No. I was not told that because
we don’t expect to finish mid-table. ”
He explained further: “It’s different for many

and the board in 2013.

Abdullahi Usman (AKA Kadiri) on Monday gave
a racy narration of how he helped to pinpoint “a
big man who goes to his farm in Toyota Hilux
van” who could be kidnapped to provide Sallah
and wedding funds to some of his friends.
Narrating the genesis and finale of how Chief
Olu Falae was abducted in his farm last month
while he and another suspect Babawuro Kato by
operatives of the Department of State Security
(DSS) at their headquarters in Abuja, Usman said
he was approached by some of his friends in
Kwara State shortly before the last Eid El-Kabir
during a wedding ceremony.
Usman continued that one Datijo approached
him complaining that he was so broke that he
might not be able to satisfactorily celebrate the
coming festival unless he (Usman) was able to
give information on any big man that could be
abducted for money.
“I then told him that I know one man who used
to bring a Hilux vehicle to his farm and I used
to see him as I move my cows about”, he told
reporters.
That was how the gang members arranged to
kidnap Chief Falae on his farm on Monday,
September 21, 2015.
Usman said they then took Falae to Owo where
he was kept at a place called ‘Pipeline’ around
Benin junction where the man was kept.
Eventually, the ransom of N5 million was paid to
Datijo who according to Usman made away with
the money.
In their narrative, it was the second suspect Kato
who ferried Datijo and Falae on his commercial
motorcycle from the hideout to where he was
eventually picked up by the Police.
Kato however, insisted that he was not part of
the gang as he was only contracted to transport
the two on that night.
According to Mr. Abdullahi Garba who
addressed the press on behalf of the DSS, the
suspects were picked up in Lokoja.
He stated that the abductors were mere
criminals and that their action was not
motivated by any political or ethnic sentiment
save for criminality.

Nigerian parents are very smart. They tell lies
stories to get their children on the obedience
path or to look really good in their eyes.
Children on the other hand are inquisitive and
gullible. Perfect recipe right? Here are some of
the common lies Nigerian parents tell their
children:
1. If you tell me the truth, I won’t touch you You
tell them and then get the beating of your life.
2. I will buy you a bicycle if you come first in
class When you get that first position they will
remind you of everything they bought you since
you were born.
3. Lend me money, I will give you back Any
attempt to ask for the money will lead to you
hearing the story of your life. Again.
4. Bring me any problem, I will solve it for you
Give them a hard problem to solve and they will
give you different excuses or they will blame
your teacher for not teaching you well.
5. Don’t play with boys or you will get pregnant
This is so hilarious and common. Most Nigerian
parents tell their female children this lie to
prevent them from ‘danger’.
6. Tell the person at the door I am not at home
“My daddy said I should tell you that he is not at
home” usually gives away the lie to the visitor.
7. If you work hard, you will get a gift from
‘Father Christmas’ American movies and this lie
have made some Nigerian kids wait to receive a
gift at their doorstep at Christmas but it never
happens.
8. I have counted all the meat and one is missing
Some mothers tell this one to catch an
unsuspecting ‘soup raider’.
9. When I was your age I always came first If
every parent came first, who came second?
10. When I was your age, I sponsored myself
through school Which school? Where is the
certificate? But again wasn’t education free back

Joseph Godwin, a 10-year old boy has made history as the youngest Plateau state police commissioner.



Joseph assumed duty on Saturday October 10, at
the police headquarters as a child police
commissioner.
Nigerian Pilot reports that the child police
commissioner also received the child president
of the Federal Republic of Nigeria as well as the
child minister of defence.
During her remarks, Ugendu Uchechi, the child
president applauded the Nigerian police for its
fight against crime.
She however, warned men of the Nigerian police
to desist from bribery and other forms of vices.
Nasiru Oki, the state police commissioner also
expressed delight at the visit of the Children
Government of Nigeria.
Oki urged them to work hard to achieve their
dreams and also tasked parents on good
upbringing of their children.
The event was an initiative of the Children
Government of Nigeria who visited some
military, paramilitary and police formations in
the state.

This is the story of my life: I am not a loose
woman. I am just a woman who loves her
husband very much and didn’t want to lose him.
I just did what I had to do to save my marriage
even though I feel guilty sometimes. It was not
easy but I slept with my driver so that I could
give my husband a child, but instead, God gave
me twins, a boy and a girl.
I was married to Philip for eight years. We had
no child. “The worst was that I never got
pregnant even for a day.” His mother became so
impatient that she started breathing down my
neck as she gave me no breathing space at all.
She moved in to live with us and practically
made my life unbearable – in my matrimonial
home.
I cannot drink water and drop the cup because
she must insult me. It got to a point that she
stopped eating my food because, according to
her, I should be feeding my children so that they
would grow healthy and stronger and not her.
“Monica, if you had children, you are supposed
to be feeding them with all these food so that
they would grow healthy and strong. I am
getting old so I don’t need all these nonsense you
call food. Take them away and give me
grandchildren,” she would scream.
Even after she had left, I could still hear those
insults in my head so I decided to take a bold
step – I seduced and slept with our driver…
Before then, my mother-in-law also stopped
talking to me, however, the only time she talks
to me is when she wants to insult me and
remind me of how less a woman I was.
Philip and I love each other so much that he
stood by me despite all his mother did or said to
frustrate me to leave him. We visited different
specialists and they all certified us medically
alright. I have visited churches, held vigils and
even fasted for days, drank various concoctions
of varied colours and combinations all in the
name of getting pregnant so that my mother-in-
law can stop humiliating me yet I couldn’t get
pregnant.

Major General Yusuf Abubakar made the
statement on
Sunday, October 4, while speaking to the News
Agency of
Nigeria in Maiduguri. Reacting to the recent
spate of
suicide bombings by suspected insurgents in
some parts of
the country, the Theater Commander, Operation
‘Layiya
Dole” pointed out that the bombings were aimed
at
diverting the attention of the military from
achieving its
target in the ongoing anti-terrorism war.
“I want to assure all that for every second that
passes, we get more committed to fighting the
insurgents; we cannot be deterred. We are
doing as
much as we could to ensure that we
completely
eradicate the insurgents as quickly as possible
because we are aware of the timeline within
which to
complete the task”, he said.
He said the military had already gotten clues
about those
involved in the recent suicide bombings in
Maiduguri.
“We searched the houses and certain items that
we
recovered at the vicinity gave us some clues”,
Abubakar said.
He said although investigations had commenced
on the
clues, it would take time before reaching a
conclusion.
“Investigation on those that we suspect that are
either participating or hiding, fueling or
conniving
with those that carried out those acts, is ongoing.
“They will be exposed in due course”, Abubakar
assured.
He appealed to Nigerians to be security
conscious to avoid
future occurrence.
“The citizens need to know that security is their
personal responsibility as individuals. They must
be
able to secure themselves and doing so means
they
need to be security conscious. Any suspicious
movement within the environment should be
reported
to security agents immediately”, he advised.
Abubakar said the military was working on a
strategy that
would enable individuals pass vital information

360jamng has been informed that Chelsea
midfielder John Obi Mikel will be one of the
first foreign – based players called up for the
friendlies against Democratic Republic of Congo
and Cameroon to arrive in Belgium ahead of
schedule.
The Nigeria Football Federation had instructed
all the overseas based players to arrive in
Belgium as from Monday, 5th October.
But Mikel left his home in London on Sunday
afternoon at around 1400 hours to board a
British Airways flight to Belgium.
As earlier reported, the Super Eagles star was
eager to link up with the national team once
again after close to a year in the international
wilderness, hence his decision to report to camp
early.
Having played his fifth game of the season
against Porto in the Champions League, the
defensive midfielder was left out of the Chelsea
squad that fell 3 – 1 to Southampton in the
Premier League on Saturday.
