EMERGENCY : I stocked 215 fingerlings in a plastic pond(GP tank) exactly a week today. I lost a fish 4 days ago with cause of death unknown to me. Today, while I was just observing the fishes, I noticed another dead one, as I look closely at the physical appearance I noticed that both dead fishes have short tentacles and what appears to be whitish is at the Base of the tentacle. I also notice that while feeding, some of the fishes just hang facing vertically and most of them have the symptoms of the dead fish tentacles.

Please I need urgent help as I will keep on refreshing this page till I get a reply from my able and experienced fish farmers.

This is my first culture, hence I'm a learner (novice).

Help o, what should I do?

treat with anti biotic and watch your fishes, make sure you keep them in clean water and reduce their feeding. possibly their was a little challenge with your with your handling

i would have told you clearly that juveniles is better for starter, also breeder that is sincere in the size of his/her fingerlings would still do okay. All depends on the sincerity of the breeder. No friendly breeder would sell an ijebu size to a starter even if he/she plead for it.

About treatment, the conventional story that you will hear is use formalin, permanganate, chlorine etc or blagdon anti- bacteria etc, but when i see i have not the luxury of time to seek any of the above or they aint available, i simply wash with sunlight, rinse well, very well, then clean with hypo(using a clean foam), let it dry and afterwards soak in water for some time and flush out the water to the last drop. i could do such twice i.e the flushing. I use it same or next day, depending on time i did all the above.

How many times i have/had done this? lost count, but i always recommend the common one, because i do all my things with diligence or i dont do it at all.

having treated the pond & all in good condition, lower the fishes preferable at a corner of the pond,dont be in a hurry to feed(there will be some food like plantons) Or take some of your pond water & add to the fishes before introduction to the main pond. there is no rigid sequence,the most essential is that you dont throw the fishes anyhow into the pond. it applies to all pond type

you dont follow or learn things from insincere people. Anyone that doesn't want his/her subordinate to raise or make meaning of life or business isn't worth being under. Call him/her, discuss & also be sincere by stating the reality to the person,evaluate your spending etc.,then if no meaningful agreement,endure & replace the person. Many greedy people(within & outside the country). Dont fight,dont sound desperate & dont compromise. Your own way shall be open in Jesus Name,Amen. And dont pull him/her down. No one last at the top by causing the downfall of another.

how do you compete with such. Desire is good,the indepth knowledge is KEY in whatever a man choose to do. Better you have your funds than waste resources doing guess work. Just ask the importer to guide you,dont release funds(pay on delivery). Many compromise importers abscond when your funds get into their hands.

Iam not selling anything presently,except services or time(laugh). Juvenile(REAL) cant be more than N25-35. The number of bags,depends on your breed,feed mgt & health of fish. Envisage between 350-420 for one, could be less or slightly more,depending on the factors stated earlier.

so my country man, it varies from individual to individual,from stock to stock,but you could set a range to be on safe side. Hence if someone tells you it is 10naira at least,but 30naira at most,better keep the 30 & if at the end you spend 14naira,it aids your profit.

Many will keep 10 & discover later that it is not enough & later endup in crisis. That is why many project die & many are in trouble with banks & their creditors.

Reason for my question above, I bought 3000 ijebu fingerlings on the first day of stocking 425 died, we disnfected them with Tetracycline chlorophenicle and salt, second day 150 died before feeding tthem with coppens 0.5mm third day 68 died, 4th day 53 died although the supplier promised to replace all the dead after one week, my question now is is it possible that the feed could be killing them according to the seller dat all coppens feed in the mkt since 3months are fake. The area am confused is dat they ve have been dieing b4 feeding. Pls help

i cant confirm if all is fake,but with the high price of dollar to naira,there is great temptation for crafty people to produce such. Also note that the breeder wont want to take the blame. It is also important to state that in your bid to be smart in buying ijebu,many do outsmart themselves by the consequence. In whichever way,you learnt something.

I have contacted a producer of taupulin pond with iron stands though not yet sure of the capacity. Still studying the market for breeding and growout in this area

then you should be able to use your 50k to start with breeding,provided you can get your tank e.g one of those white tank with iron guard,then you cut it into two.

There is borehole for steady watet supply but no experience,though i attende lectures on it in camp.

lectures isn't enough at most times,you also need containers/ponds to keep your fishes for raising them. What was the lecture on? growout or fishseeds production

If he is serious & facilities is on ground,maximum give him/her 50-60k,more than enough provided he/she has the know how. Forget about harsh weather, the weather had been like that since the 60's, it pays some at a time & others would complain & so it will be to the end of the world.

Lets assume u buy your broodstocks from 2 females of 3kg from the ones advertised(i am not recommending anyone,just an analysis) is 9k,one male 2-3kg is maximum 3 - 4.5kovaprim is maximum 6k,tin of artemia that could feed a million is maximum 7k,totally 26.5k,feed whatever size 20k,500naira for syringe & 0.6 saline water maximum,aquapro & livestovit 3k.All is 50k. 10k for d guy or babe for other expenses. In three - six weeks you are selling.So if serious,he shld

there is always time out of no time. If grow out, you plan to feed them twice & the quantity could have been delegated to someone & timing given. Same as fingerlings & you also communicate with your worker,available hands or child. It is what i had done over & over a long duration.Why i stopped? Undue envy that assistants portray even after paying salary(they want to share in business,hence i quickly send them forth with something to start their own).

Hello, Mr supporting striker( Mr excelsiorfarm ) has said it all..The first step to take is to clear the place to have a clearer view also for predators, pump out all the water in the pond to know the pond actual size, with what i saw in the pix the pond has to be re dug and bagged. If i may ask is it a natural flow through pond?

my brother, yes i am a supporting striker here & every contributor is doing a remarkable job on this thread.

I had seen your mail, the answers are as follows; if group training of minimum of 4-5 days and maximum of a week, all participant pays 10k each. If an individual, sames timing, it is 25k. That is for hatchery.

For Grow out, we start from the hatchery and i advice such trainee to come in at least once a week if the busy type or as often as possible if less busy.

If i am interested to help and i have the time or doing production or project, i call in those in need to join me for FREE, provided they could pay for their transport to the location.

Having written all this, i already stated that presently i am in school, i need to be focus because i believe God to take me to a goal, hence i had stopped every form of training or production until some educational structures are in place(to read no be small thing when there are lots of attaching responsibilities and obligation). So my fellow Nigerian, you have to seek in your locality or even on this thread someone that you could understudy maybe depending on your agreement with your choice of individual.

All i do mostly is advisory for now, except if by chance or someone close invites me to come assess his work/farm or a friend, so that we could reason together on improving it or getting more from little.

Wherever you are, i can still do that for you. I don't travel like before(i have many reasons to decline such gesture)

I'm a complete novice just about to start out in fish farming. I have been given access to a fish pond (earthen) and will like to seek expert advice on what to do as first step prior to stocking. Please note that this pond has been stocked twice by the previous owner though he was just using his own guidelines. Since I will be using this pond commercially now,i really need your insights. This is the pond as it is right now....please what will be the first step to take?

if you mean Real business, the surrounding is too bushy and that environ will no doubt house uncountable numbers of predators, also pump out the water to have a knowledge of the pond, what is in it, how far/fast it fills back etc. Remove that shrub, it could encourage some predators.

The pond looks irregular i.e. no define boundaries. When you sort those out, then treatment, if need be.

I will take to your advice, I feed Durantee 0.2mm very little but I noticed that even after leaving the feed for about an hour I will come back to some floating or settles at the center of the vat, which I always siphon. I will avoid morning and night flow thru. I have a solar aerator I use almost 24/7. Please how many times daily should I feed? I feed 3 times daily, morning afternoon and evening around 6pm. Thanks for the help sir..

it isn't the number of times that you feed, but the quantity you feed per time that would decide what could happen. Either over feeding or under feeding. Overfeeding is worse, many things will happen quickly that creates unpleasant issues. From what you wrote, you give a bit more, hence you siphon excess

Please sir I want to know if the cold water from the tank outside can have any bad effect on fries. after reading trough ronboski thread, I decided to set up a small hatchery at home to solve the problem of buying runt seeds for my farm, the production was successful and they are 11 days old now, the weather is really cold here and I am losing much fries from 2 days ago, so I want to know if the problem is the water coming in from the tank, cause I do flow thru 24/7..

if extreme? it could, but you could take precaution by not allowing the water level to be too high, you could cover your pond(to generate some heat) or prevent releasing the water very early in the day or late at night into the hatchery tank. Also check your feeding or if your tank is slimy for possible cause of mortality, stop 24/7 flow through,especially at period of low temperature,do dripping or get an aerator.
