Good day all
I have for a while followed this thread and its been quite educational and inspirational. I am so grateful robonski15 for starting up this thread. I am grateful to all the professionals who shared there experiences as well. I am impressed by how much you shared your experience to all. This thread must have helped a number of fish farmers to rectify errors and improve yield.

That been said, it seems like the enthusiasm with which this thread was started isnt much there any longer. There hasn't been much post in the past few days.

As such, I implore the experts in the house to consider organizing training workshop. I am sure that myself and a number of newbies who go through this post on a daily basis will be interested in attending.

House, it will be nice to hear you thoughts on this.

@Elcelsiorfarm; I noticed you are experienced in catfish farming, I just started and within 3 days over 200 have died (2mm) size. My pond is a 500 litre GP tank (2 pieces); was asked to change the water every day which I did but the fish still died.

My question is: does catfish require a particular type of water or can any clean water source be OK for it.

What do i do to ensure it doesnt occur again?

Let me start this way,was the fishes newly bought & u notice this death?if yes,many things could be the cause,from environment change,sick or stress from how u transported your fishes etc.The one breeders dont love to hear,bought or supply of sick fish seeds.I could have written poor water mgt,but some said/wrote u change water daily. Even at that,u could pollute your water within 1 hour from overfeeding.Chlorine h2o is bad,iron in h2o is also bad.Well or borehole ok.Tap not ok always

Thank you bro excelsiorfarm. You made mention of beating some giants, that got me laughing because i don't have the strength to compete with such people. I don't even have the kind of resources to compete with politicians. Are you saying that there is much competition there?

not that,even those on ground haven't successfully meet the needs of All. My advice is as you look at immediate,you look outside i.e. that is called balance forecast. so no fear,some of the giants are just giant by name.

GIVE GLORY TO GOD. plantain profitable,depending on variety,10-12 months.Not get rich quick,but profitable.From that town & you can do good when you do things well. You have some giants to beat,bestfarm,politicians,but even you be in a hole & you have good product with integrity, from far & near people will come.

] you use agriculture lime, two weeks is okay, pump out water before,after it would have develop the flora,micro organism & plankton as food for fishes & kill some possible harmful ones. Liming differ from fertilization,but liming also enhance the aquatic ecosystem. For feeding,a lot dictates,if you want good foundation it is encourage that you start with foreign because many local feeds do not aid good growth for small fishes,but would perform better for fishes from 2 months. Though some local feed could be successfully use to feed through

Now to answer you, there is plus & minus to everything. Depends on water composition etc. Some examples i will give with experiences,but better fresh water except in water with trait of chlorine,iron,impurities. When i say fresh,could be hours or even minutes before(which i had done).

I had experience issue of leaving water overcome & d next day,barely all over there oil like substance had overtaken the whole surface,lost a lot From that event. A time in festac town, because of high iron content in some water or areas, water that was barely left for hours already have something like rust or brownish deposit. So know your water & test your water

Everyone is doing great here. Even without biodisc,you can do fish farming effectively & profit Well. Do good water mgt,introduce clean water or use aeration & you are on track as an alternative. Re-write your question on fetch water,explain what you mean,so i can give you a valid answer.

As a result of the information and courage derived from these forum I decided to start fish farming this year. So there has been challenges which I am gradually overcoming. I acquired an 100/100 swampy land. Dug two earthen ponds of 30/30/4 and 40/20/4. Planning to dig another 20/20/4 for sorting purpose. As a result of the season water has been a major challenge for me. Tried to dig Manila borehole but was not successful as the quys hit rock at 9 feet out of the 40k initial payment I gave them only 10k was returned. I later chooses option of well. Unfortunately, they could only achieve 14 feet before they hit a big rock that they cannot continue. Presently when we leave the well for two days we have at least 6 feed of water. So I pumped the water into the pond two days interval. I planned to stock 4000 juvenile. I have purchase 17 bags of foreign feeds durante and top feeds of 1.8mm, 2mm, 3mm and 4mm. I have also paid for the juvenile and was told will be ready in five weeks.
Please the area I would like you to pls throw more light for me is how long will it take them to finish the foreign feed? When can I start local feed and what quantity of local feed will be required to table size. I planned 4 months 10 days principle. God bless you sir and hoping to hear your response.

Those ponds are wide, what is your target? you know you count cost before starting e.g. number of fishes etc. Also what is the topography of area in case the rain comes so that your fishes could be secured against washing away by flood e.tc.

In business, you have to be a bit crude with cash if you don't want to be sent to village, since you agreed on a borehole, my expectation will be to negotiate initially how deep or depth of their work could be, what if they meet obstacle? who takes what and bear the losses or are they going to change site of location etc., But sha we learn daily.

Good well diggers know that at times they have to use explosive mechanism to break rock layers and some of those layers could even be thin layers of rocks.

Lime your ponds before your fishes come, it aids fish growth by planktons growth and assist to destroy some suppose harmful organisms that might be resident in your ponds. I cannot give you a vivid timing because the 17 bags of feed are just of varying sizes and moreover if indeed you are to be sold juveniles, I don't think 1.8mm should be in your feed range, except you are saying properly the breeder have not being faithful enough to give quality feed at the fishes infancy.

You can choose to start your local at 10 weeks, it also depends on their growth. When we talk of local feeds, please endeavor to buy from reputable ones. what you give will determine your result at the end of the day.

All the education needed is written here. And we are all learning and improving daily by God's Grace. Partly cover is okay, if you are wrong, you might not enjoy correction(though you are not wrong) , but when weather temperature is getting too cold. In other for your fishes to have appetite, you have to generate some increase in temperature i.e. when you don't have heater and know-how to use it, or use coal if an indoor type of fish farm.

Also if no adverse weather condition, there is no need to cover

mentioning cost varies from location to location base on feed price, feeding type(combinations like foreign, locals or alternatives etc.) and largely depends on individual management and the quality of fish seeds bought with size or age at purchase. TO reach 1kg, first influence is, are you buying ijebu size, fingerlings, post fingerlings or juveniles? this will dictate it. fish farming like all farming is not rocket science, yes you know this is a gestation period, but what determines if it will be achieve is knowledge with good management. 3-5 months, even some cases some still struggle to reach 800grams at 6 months. Depends on the factors you work with or work from. Get someone close to your base and understudy for 2-3 weeks for practical hand on the basics. It saves time and cash

i tell people that you dont just do things,but it is essential what you want to do on your farm,there is need for it. Though some of the advantages of covered ponds is to generate heat during cold weather or reduce heat during hot weather depending on the type of color covering use,in the dark,your fishes a relax etc.,you can determine healthy fishes from sick ones easily if partly covered.It also encourage feeding to say a few. The question you will ask yourself is which of these are you targeting to achieve,at what cost in relationship to your pond size.When you evaluate well,then you could decide

from 2months you can confidently do,i did earlier,but i understand mechanism of behaviour by His Grace,so i easily change response to observation. Important you note that i said when funds expectation had question,i decided to improvise. So my advice is dont try short changing your fishes,buy those you could effectively manage,except you have a situation at hand as mentioned earlier. It is when you decide to put too much blood meal that crisis can easily erupt,though high in protein,but pollutes water & encourage diseases when use in very high quantity.soyabean meal could be use in replacing it.

@excelsior, please what are the types of kitchen waste in specific that one can use.

EVERY waste food in your kitchen eg eba,semo,rice,beans etc. mash to pickable size eg yam because they cant easily feed on the big lumps. watch that your water mgt is properly manage. if flesh(livestock/poultry),cook a bit.

I boiled water then emptied it into a big bowl. I then added the Garri(roasted cassava flakes). I added the bloodmeal into the bowl and stirred the mixture. It was now red in color. I then added the other ingredients, (Maize, GNC, Soybean Meal, Fish Meal, Methionine) one after the other. The salt was added by dissolving in water and then pouring all over the mixture and stir.

Used such method before,but for large or reasonable size fishes. Just to upset periods of shortage of funds. If water mgt is poor,you could have a crisis at hand easily. Though didnt evaluate outcome,but knew the process assisted in preventing weight loss. But i wont give such counsel if the resources are there for planned fish farming.

Many factors influences the decision & it differs from location to location. Weather condition is one. Size is another,oxygen level in water is another.

even at this,it does not prevent you for making profit,whether for fish seeds & grow out. The measure stated earlier is beneficial for reducing production cost largely in grow-out. For your seeds,your production output settles your expenses.

5kg at 10,000 naira, that is 2000 naira per kg for starter. 10,800 for 15 kg for grow out at 720 per kg. Fish is sold at 650 and 520 for table size and melange. How are we going to make profit without developing our own method.

funny brother, the price of feeds cannot be this high & also you can do a few setup to aid alternatives feeding,like putting light over ponds for insects, kitchen waste,manure(good water mgt & dont overfeed ),maggot,duckweed,build poultry with limited birds over ponds for dual advantage. In all fish price is abit reasonable to make something if no wastages

Please house... I need to know the best way to filter my fish pond. I stay in Kaduna and I am using well water for now.. The volume of water the dug well yields is not enough to constantly change water every two days..

you need not change water every 2days if you are not overfeeding. Reduce feeding if your situation is dire & the ammonia buildup will reduce too.To filter you might need biofilter,but naira aint smiling.Try to get storage tank as reservoir for water collection overtime. Or pump into an overhead tank,pass the water through a tank with your biofilter setup & back to your ponds.For personal construction,you see video via youtube & then build yours. You still need to H2o

Good evening to all my Ogas here....i have been a fish farmer for sometimes (though still leaning) , in the spirit of expansion, i want to add poultry to the chain, the land measuring 100/100 somewhere in nasarawa state, i am having issues with where to position the layers pen,fencing is completed with borehole an other materials ready, i want to use battery cage.one of my oga advice i should build the poultry pen against the sun, another said its best facing the sun for proper sunlight inside the pen,i will really appreciate all experienced poultry farmers in the house to pls help me out,i am considering 2 coshes of block round with wire mesh to complete itto the roofing level.anyone with good picture of poultry should kindly post

anyone that advice you to construct your pen for the sun to rise & set into yr poultry pen,know nothing about poultry.2couches is okay for ventilation.If pond is big & birds limited,u can build over your ponds,reduce cost of feeding fishes

My Mum died in 2009 and she has money in Skye bank.
Before she began the sickness that eventually led to her death I remember vividly that she sent me to deposit #50000 for her.
Since her demise none of us talked about it until very recently when the four of us met during Christmas.
We are sure she has money there, but we don't know her account details except the account name which is certainly her full name.

I was told if an account is not used for six years, it will be blocked.
Please is there a way we can get her account number, and the balance of the account. also what are the requirements to collect the money.

no challenge,get her check or deposit slip,visit customer care of the bank & they would give information as possible new account number,might only tell u amount when the court says so.u need death certificate,letter of administration & government takes 10% of such funds(part of what u need 4 admin letter
