EducationSex For Grades: Boniface Igbeneghu Suspended By UNILAG by Ezenwammadu(op): 4:03pm On Oct 07, 2019
The University of Lagos has suspended its lecturer who was involved in a sex-for-marks scandal.

The lecturer was exposed in a video by BBC Africa where an undercover journalist, Kiki Mordi, disguised as a 17-year-old admission seeker.

The vice-chancellor of the institution, Oluwatoyin Ogundipe, confirmed the development to PREMIUM TIMES in an interview Monday afternoon.

Mr Ogundipe said the lecturer has been suspended indefinitely.

”A panel will be set up to investigate the issue,” he said.

The investigation

The investigation is part of a broader one that uncovers the sex for grade crises in universities in Nigeria and Ghana.

The UNILAG lecturer, Boniface Igbeneghu, is a former sub-dean of Faculty of Art and head pastor of local Foursquare Gospel Church.

Mr Igbeneghu invited the ‘admission seeker’ to his office for ‘tutorials’ and at their first meeting asked: “how old are you?”.

After responding, the lecturer commented on her appearance.

“Don’t you know you are a beautiful girl? Do you know I am a pastor and I am in my 50s but if I want a girl of 17 years, all I need is a sweet tongue and put some money,” he said.

He later continued with the harassment of the undercover reporter oblivious that he was being filmed.

Many Nigerians have called for the suspension and investigation of the lecturer.

PoliticsOkorocha Is Finished’ – Senator Uzodinma by Ezenwammadu(op): 3:10pm On May 30, 2019
Senator representing Imo West senatorial district, Hope Uzodinma, has said the immediate past governor of Imo State, Rochas Okorocha, will soon realize he is politically finished.

Uzodinma, in a statement issued yesterday by Declan Emulumba, the Director of Media and Special Duties, Senator Hope Uzodinma Campaign Organisation, insisted that Okorocha should not join issues with decent and popular politicians like him, who have been winning election through popular votes.

Uzodinma advised Okorocha to bury his head in shame and suffer the consequences of his ill-advised actions.

“If there is anybody that is actually shameless in Imo State, that person is Okorocha. For a man who was governor in Imo for eight years and had to rely on violence to be declared winner of a senatorial election, shows that he is finished politically.

“In all these, was APC indicted of any electoral offence?” he asked.

“From available records, which are now before the tribunal, I defeated Okorocha and his son-in-law in all the local government areas. Nemesis has caught up with him, that is why he is now in a political pit,” the APC governorship candidate in the last election, said.

He noted that Okorocha had never won a free and fair election, but had always depended on rigging, violence and manipulation of results to be declared winner as was evident in the last election, where he was caught.

Senator Uzodinma said it was clear from comments by the former governor that he deliberately set out to destroy APC for his selfish reasons.

PoliticsSupreme Court Ruling On Zamfara Bittter-sweet Victory For Democracy – Marafa by Ezenwammadu(op): 3:12pm On May 24, 2019
The chairman of the Senate Committee on Petroleum (downstream), Sen Kabiru Marafa (APC, Zamfara) has described Friday’s judgement of the Supreme Court on Zamfara APC candidates tussle as a sweet and bitter, but a huge victory for democracy, Zamfara state and the country as a whole. In his interim reaction to the Supreme Court judgement which declared that the All Progressives Congress (APC) had no candidates in the 2019 general elections, he said no matter how long, truth will always prevail over falsehood. “Today’s judgement is a victory for democracy, triumph of truth over falsehood and redeemer of the integrity of the judiciary. “As we all know the APC was unable to conduct primaries in Zamfara state following Yari’s thuggery and violent machinations. With this, lesson has been served that only strict adherence to rule of law and due process will take the country to the next level as being advocated by President Muhammadu Buhari. “This Judgement has shown that the president is religiously sincere with his non-interference stance on function of other arms of government. He has further endeared himself to Nigerians and the world for resisting all efforts by Abdulaziz Yari to force him to interfere on the judgement,” he said. Marafa urged his adversaries to take the judgement as the will of Allah and a lesson that only Allah, the Almighty can crown a king. Commending the Acting Chief Justice of Nigeria (CJN), Justice Tanko Muhammad for leading the Justices aright, he said the judiciary remains the last hope of the common man. “The acting CJN and the Justices that delivered the judgement have with this judgement, laid the foundation for the redemption of the battered image of the judiciary as painted by the likes of justice Bello Shinkafi. “I will like to thank the the judiciary especially the Justice Tom Yakubu team at the Appeal Court and now the the Ag CJN team in the Supreme Court, the courageous position of INEC, the unflinching support of the people of Zamfara State, my family for their wonderful support and prayers, my well wishers and admirers in Nigeria and diaspora for their overwhelming support. “Judiciary remains the last hope of the common man, therefore all hands must be on deck to strengthen it,” he said.
