Politics / Governor Ortom Speaks Amid Impeachment Saga, Explains Why Notice Is Null, Void by Ezenwammadu(m): 12:22pm On Jul 30, 2018
The Benue State Governor, Samuel Ortom, has reacted to the report of the impeachment notice served him by eight meembers of the State’s House of Assembly on Monday.

Crisis in the State House of Assembly took a new turn on Monday as eight lawmakers served an impeachment notice on the governor.

The lawmakers, Adanyi Benjamin, Terhemba Chabo, Benjamin Nungwa, Bem Mngutyo, Adams Okloho, James Okefe and Nick Eworo were among members that moved for the governor’s impeachment.

The plot was coordinated by Terkimbi Ikyange who was removed as speaker of the Assembly last week.

Speaking to DAILY POST on the development through his Chief Press Secretary, Terver Akase, Ortom said he was still the governor of the State, adding that the lawmakers lack the constitutional powers to remove him from office.

He said, “Ortom is still the Chief Executive of the State. You can’t just impeach a Governor in a flash. You have to go through all the legal and constitutional processes.

“They have not been able to form a quorum, so it is not possible. Only eight people served the governor the notice, even at that, 2 other members who were part of the cangaroo sitting were on the side of the governor, so how can anybody call that an impeachment notice. It’s laughable and must be ignored completely.

“And for the record, there is a court injunction restricting the impeached Speaker from parading himself as the Speaker of the House and that court injunction has not been vacated.

“He has been suspended for 6 months, he doesn’t have any constitutional right to go back to that Assembly.

“He has done nothing to vacate that injunction so whatever he did stands null and void.

Their defection comes days after the governor, Samuel Ortom, also defected from the APC to the PDP.

The governor announced his defection during a meeting with elected local government chairmen and councillors on Wednesday at the Government House Makurdi, hours after protesting youths barred him from travelling to Abuja to attend the APC reconciliation meeting.

He said that after various consultations from his party, he was advised to look for another party, noting that his stay in the APC had expired.

In the same vein, the 13 local government chairman have joined the wave of defections.

The chairmen include Anthony Shawon of Guma local government, Justina Sorka of Buruku local government, Mwuese Ubebe of Konshisha local government, Blessing Unogwo of Ado Ado local government, Virginia Kpindi of Katsina-Ala local government and George Alli of Otukpo local government.

Others include: Comfort Echeoda of Agatu local government, Francis Ayaga of Gwer West local government, Uaah Vitalis of Gwer East local government, Richard Nyajo of Logo local government, Ibellogo Tor of Tyokaa- Ukum local government, Adakole Abutu of Ohimini local government and Peter Onche of Obi local government.

Politics / Senator Godswill Abot Akpabio Is The New Senate Majority Leader by Ezenwammadu(m): 2:17pm On Jul 24, 2018
Senator Godswill Akpabio will likely emerge as the new majority leader of the Senate when it resumes plenary later in September this year.

If this happens, it means Senator Ahmed Lawan, the current majority leader, would become the new minority leader, according to opinions of analysts.

Akpabio’s emergence is a result from the defection of 15 senators on Wednesday making the opposition Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) having the majority at the Senate.

With the defection, the All progressives Congress now has 48 members in the Senate while the Peoples Democratic Party has 58 members.

There are beliefs that the PDP may receive more decampees as some of the senators are reportedly yet to finally make up their minds.

Some of those who announced their defection include Dino Melaye.

It was learnt that the next batch of defectors to the Peoples Democratic Party would include the Senate President, Bukola Saraki.

Congrats senator

Politics / We Are Not Aware Of Siege On Saraki’s Residence — Police by Ezenwammadu(m): 11:50am On Jul 24, 2018
The Nigeria Police Force (NPF) on Tuesday said it is not aware on the siege laid on the residence of the President of the senate, Bukola Saraki by security agencies.

NPF spokesman, DCP Jimoh Moshood said he is not aware of the development.

“I am not aware. You are just informing me,” he told our reporter on the phone.

DCP Moshood who promised to get back to us, added that the last communication he was aware of is the letter asking Saraki to make himself physically available to interrogators at 8am today.

Policemen on Tuesday morning blocked the convoy of the President of the Senate, Bukola Saraki at Lake Chad Junction, Maitama, Abuja.

The NPF on Monday sent an invitation letter to Saraki asking him to appear before investigators in Abuja.

The Senate President is expected to answer questions in the case of Offa bank robbery and murder of more than 31 persons, including the snatching of 21 AK 47 Riles on 5th of April 2018.

Meanwhile Saraki has stated that the invitation to him by the Police to report to a station in Guzape over the Offa robbery investigation is a mere afterthought which is designed to achieve political purpose.

Politics / R-APC Threatens To Pick Presidential Candidate by Ezenwammadu(m): 1:23pm On Jul 21, 2018
The Reformed All Progressives Congress R-APC, a splinter group within the ruling APC has disclosed of its readiness to sponsor its own presidential candidate in the 2019 presidential elections, should the court rule in its favour regarding the authenticity or otherwise of the Adams Oshiomhole-led APC.

National Chairman of the R-APC, Engr. Buba Galadima disclosed this on Friday at a meeting of some women groups in Abuja.

Stating that his group enjoys the backing of a wide range of APC supporters, Galadima however said the R-APC was not making any effort to get registered by the Independent National Electoral Commission INEC as a new political party.

“We have 75% representation across the country. We are not making efforts to register with INEC. Moreover the APC we are trying to reform is our vehicle. We do not need INEC. We need the court to rule in our favour”, he said.

“On whether, the faction is considering picking a presidential candidate for 2019, Galadima said; “Why not if the court says we are the authentic leadership?”According to him, the APC has become worse than the Peoples Democratic Party PDP which it dislodged from power.

“All we are seeking is fair play, transparency, justice, level play ground and that everything that was done to bring the so-called National Working Committee to office is being challenged in the court and God willing, we will get justice in court.

“We were voted into office because we promised that we will do better than our predecessors but instead of doing better than our predecessors we are worse than them. We did not bargain that all criminal elements and people of questionable character will be migrating into our party to the extent that APC has now turned itself into a safe haven for those facing corruption charges”, he stated.

On her part, the National Woman Leader of the R-APC, Aisha Kaita accused the Federal Government of frustrating voters especially women who usually constitute a larger percentage of the voting population.

Politics / Assets Declaration: Supreme Court Upholds Saraki’s Appeal, Frees Him Of Charges by Ezenwammadu(m): 10:34am On Jul 06, 2018
The Supreme Court on Friday finally laid to rest the trial of a Senate President, Dr. Bukola Saraki, on assets declaration and sundry charges instituted against him before the Code of Conduct Tribunal.

A five-man panel of the apex court led by Justice Dattijo Muhammad unanimously upheld Saraki’s appeal, by dismissing the remnant three counts, declaring the evidence led by the prosecution as hearsay.

The Danladi Umar-led CCT had, in June last year, terminated the trial upon an application by Saraki, by dismissing the entire 18 counts preferred against the Senate President.

The CCT’s decision was based on the grounds that the prosecution, with its four witnesses and 49 exhibits tendered, only led hearsay evidence which could not be the basis to link Saraki to the 18 counts preferred against him.

However, the Court of Appeal in Abuja ruling on December 12, 2017, in an appeal filed by the Federal Government against the decision of the CCT, restored three out of the dismissed 18 counts and ordered Saraki to return to the CCT to defend the three charges.

While Saraki had appealed to the Supreme Court against the part of the Court of Appeal’s decision restoring three of the 18 counts, the Federal Government had cross-appealed against the part of the decision affirming the tribunal’s dismissal of the rest of the 15 counts.

However, in its lead judgment on Friday, Justice Centus Nweze upheld Saraki’s appeal and dismissed the Federal Government’s appeal.
Justice Nweze agreed with the CCT that the evidence led by the prosecution at the tribunal was entirely hearsay.

He held that the Court of Appeal was wrong to have restored three out the 18 counts earlier dismissed by the CCT when it agreed that the evidence led by the prosecution was hearsay but went ahead to isolate three of the counts as having been proved.

Justice Nweze quoted a part of the Court of Appeal’s judgment where it held that “the prosecution failed to call those who have direct knowledge of the facts sought to be proved, to testify”.

Faulting the Court of Appeal’s turn around to restore three of the counts based on the evidence it had declared as hearsay, Justice Nweze said was “equivalent to judicial equivalent of a forensic somersault”.
