It's better to accept the news as true and be proven wrong at the end than to reject it as false and be proven right at the end.

Accepting it as true does not stop the existing struggle. But it silences a few of their folks.

On the other hand, rejecting the news as false does not improve the existing struggle, instead it frustrates some of their folks and makes them more sceptical of what your goal truly is.

If the mission is referendum, then you should be happy about this news, regardless if it's true or false.
