Controversy: Punishment and Equality under Sharia Marriage and divorce are the most significant aspects of sharia, but criminal law is the most controversial. In sharia, there are categories of offenses: those that are prescribed a specific punishment in the Quran, known as hadd punishments, those that fall under a judge's discretion, and those resolved through a tit-for-tat measure (ie., blood money paid to the family of a murder victim). There are five hadd crimes: unlawful sexual intercourse (sex outside of marriage and adultery), false accusation of unlawful sexual intercourse, wine drinking (sometimes extended to include all alcohol drinking), theft, and highway robbery. Punishments for hadd offenses--flogging, stoning, amputation, exile, or execution--get a significant amount of media attention when they occur. These sentences are not often prescribed, however. "In reality, most Muslim countries do not use traditional classical Islamic punishments," says Ali Mazrui of the Institute of Global Cultural Studies in a Voice of America interview. These punishments remain on the books in some countries but lesser penalties are often considered sufficient. Despite official reluctance to use hadd punishments, vigilante justice still takes place. Honor killings, murders committed in retaliation for bringing dishonor on one's family, are a worldwide problem. While precise statistics are scarce, the UN estimates thousands of women are killed annually in the name of family honor (National Geographic). Other practices that are woven into the sharia debate, such as female genital mutilation, adolescent marriages, polygamy, and gender-biased inheritance rules, elicit as much controversy. There is significant debate over what the Quran sanctions and what practices were pulled from local customs and predate Islam. Those that seek to eliminate or at least modify these controversial practices cite the religious tenet of tajdid. The concept is one of renewal, where Islamic society must be reformed constantly to keep it in its purest form. "With the passage of time and changing circumstances since traditional classical jurisprudence was founded, people's problems have changed and conversely, there must be new thought to address these changes and events," says Dr. Abdul Fatah Idris, head of the comparative jurisprudence department at Al-Azhar University in Cairo. Though many scholars share this line of thought, there are those who consider the purest form of Islam to be the one practiced in the seventh century. |
Kobojunkie:Provide proof for your assertion. And it is widespread consensus that Sharia has no place in this country. Religion shouldn't never mix with politics. |
I accept all AA who choose to go back to their IGBO names. ![]() If you have Igbo blood in you my AA comrades, give your children Igbo names, so we can increase the Igbo population. |
I'll bet they would sell to an Indian before they do an Igbo man. |
^^^ It is worldwide consensus that Sharia law is a relic of the Middle Ages. What was good back then, it is not good now. The West and Asia have seen that Sharia should be resisted. Well at least the East does not have to resist Sharia law. |
Sjeezy you are a CLOWN. |
This is scary! Yorubas resist this my SW brothers. I know I mock you all at times, but please resist Sharia. Sharia is not for a civilized people, it is a barbaric interpretation that has not been updated since the Medieval Ages. |

Yes, ACN seems to be a party of thugs. PDP may be mediocre, but our economy has been growing under there tenure, |
Enugu is always leading the way. Sullivan Chime is truly a good governor in PDP. Thank you Ileke-Idi for recognizing the fact that Yorubas and other groups reside in Enugu. |
Alj Uche:Biafra doesn't exist anymore my brother. However, ACN did bring violence to Akwa Ibom state. |

The ever-busy Ilepa Road was deserted during the period, as traders hurriedly closed down their shops, while motorists cleared off the road to avoid stray bullets. Although some eyewitness accounts revealed that the robbers carried out their dastardly act unchallenged, but another account said that men of the Nigeria Police met the robbers, while attempting to escape from the bank and engaged them in a gun duel. They, however escaped with their loot. However, the police spokesman in the state, Aremu Adeniran, said only one person died in the incident, while others were injured. Aremu explained that men of the command responded swiftly to the distress call and engaged the robbers in a shoot out, saying that some of them sustained injuries but managed to escape. He noted that the police are still on the trail of the robbers and making frantic efforts to arrest them, promising that “we will get them”. The police image-maker added that a few customers and passers-by, who sustained injuries as a result of gunshots have been taken to private hospitals for urgent medical treatment In Ekiti State, gunmen also struck in Iropora, Irepodun/Ifelodun Local Government Area of the state, and left Toyin Akinlade, the Organising Secretary of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) in Ido/Osi Local Government Area of the state and one night guard, Lawrence Adebayo (70) dead. Besides, the Nigerian Compass learnt that four students of the School of Health Technology, Ijero-Ekiti, Ijero Local Government Area of Ekiti State, were kidnapped and released yesterday. They were abducted on Ara/Awo road. The police also confirmed that the students have been released, saying information got to them that some of them were drugged before they were kidnapped. Jimoh said a vigilance group and members of the public were instrumental in rescuing the students from their abductors. Reacting to the kidnap, the Provost of the college, Dr. Francis Ibikunle, said the students adducted have been rescued and they are in stable condition. Ibikunle noted the four female and one male students have since gone to the hospital for medical check-up after the incident. Alj Uche:Igbos have been coming to the United States since the 30s and 40s. Yoruba chose to go to the UK. This is common knowledge. I know Igbos who have been here for 3 generations. |
fstranger3:More like bring back Do or Die politics what your region is known for. |
The Wild Wild West. |
Why didn't they simply stay in Lagos and commit these crimes there instead of their homeland? |
Please. I have seen many Igbos in the corporate world in the United States. My cousin works for Goldman Sachs as a financial analyst and I am an intern at investment banking firm in Washington DC. So please do not tell me Igbos are not in the Corporate world. Remember there are more Igbos in the United States than Yorubas. |
Either way, One Nigeria! It is time for us to tap into other region's resources. Natural Gas is found in great quantities in the SW. And so is gold. Many people do not mention that, but gold is found in the region as well. It must be fully tapped into for the good of the nation. ![]() |
sjeezy you don't know what you are talking about. I lived in Ghana for years. Not just one year, but years and the Ewe do not see themselves as Yorubas, they see themselves as Ghanaians. And they will always see themselves as Ghanaians. My Ashanti and Fante friends would make fun of the Ewe by saying that they came from Nigeria. But the Ewe say they are Ghanaians and do not want to be associated with Nigeria. Have you ever been to Ghana? Have you ever been to Accra? Have you ever been to the Volta Region (Ewe area)? If not, I advise you to be quiet. |
![]() This would be funny if true. |
Nigeria is in trouble if these are our "future" leaders. |
Gbawe:And women seem to be the best in my honest opinion. |

If Ribadu was elected, he would become like Mao Zedong and Stalin. |
Shekarau is a little wrong. Some nations have seen a population decline. Northern Europe and Japan have seen population decline. The developing world has seen the growth in population. |
