Politics › Nigeria Has Become The Poverty Capital Of The World by FA13(op): 5:03pm On Jun 26, 2018 |
http://www.msn.com/en-xl/africa/africa-top-stories/nigeria-has-become-the-poverty-capital-of-the-world/ar-AAz9Djd?li=BBKhQr3&ocid=iehpThe United Nations’ Sustainable Development Goal (SDG) to end extreme poverty by 2030 is unlikely to be met—no thanks, in large part, to Nigeria. A new report by The World Poverty Clock shows Nigeria has overtaken India as the country with the most extreme poor people in the world. India has a population seven times larger than Nigeria’s. The struggle to lift more citizens out of extreme poverty is an indictment on successive Nigerian governments which have mismanaged the country’s vast oil riches through incompetence and corruption. The 86.9 million Nigerians now living in extreme poverty represents nearly 50% of its estimated 180 million population. As Nigeria faces a major population boom—it will become the world’s third largest country by 2050—it’s a problem will likely worsen. But having large swathes of people still living in extreme poverty is an Africa-wide problem. Crucially, of those countries in top ten, only Ethiopia is on track to meet the United Nations’ SDG of ending extreme poverty by 2030. Outside the top ten, only Ghana and Mauritania are also on track with the SDG target. Indeed, of the 15 countries across the world where extreme poverty is rising per World Poverty Clock data, 13 are currently in Africa. As a consequence, the mission to end extreme poverty globally is already at risk. By July 2018, 83 million people would have been lifted out of extreme poverty since January 2016—but the number is 37 million people fewer than the required to meet the 2030 target. No Country Percentage of population in extreme poverty SDG1 status 1 Nigeria 46.7 Poverty rising 2 Democratic Republic of Congo 77 Poverty rising 3. babisho: Dear Chidinho10,
First, I commend you for the many good works you are doing on this thread. You take time to answer questions and clarify issues. Well done.
I would suggest however that you be a little more weary before you make assertions as they may sometimes be misleading.
Let us look at the case in question. How can u confidently tell the poster not to reapply to schools that rejected him as some schools view rejected applicants somehow. How can you have that information? Are you privy to the admission process of the schools that he applied to? Do you categorically know why he was rejected? (Perhaps they thought his GRE quants score wasn't competitive enough? Or his PhD proposal wasn't good/clear enough? Or his letters of recommendation weren't glowing enough? Or maybe they couldn't find any faculty with interest in his proposed area of research? Or they were looking for someone with a bit more research experience? Or maybe this year was just particularly competitive and in other years he would have gotten in but the competition was just stiff for limited spaces available? Or any other reason you can come up with). If he finds out why they rejected him and he is able to improve his profile, isn't it possible that he may get in if he reapplies ? What a contribution too! I didn't really think of asking for a feedback from the admission office though Michigan said something like ' Despite your great academic potential demonstrated in your application, we are forced to make this difficult decision to meet our capacity to educate and train students in our program while experiencing an unprecedentedly large number of applications to our graduate program. We feel sorry that such a competitive admission process prohibits us from accepting many highly qualified applicants to our program. 'By the way, Congrats on your Harvard admission. May I ask what your discipline is? |

femi312: First don't be too hard on yourself, life happens. Do you have a masters degree? Do you have research experience? Did you have any contact with any faculty prior to applying? The sad truth is, even with a GRE score of 320, you can still be rejected from Top 10 schools if you apply to all. PhD admission is extremely competitive and I admire your ambition for choosing those schools but you need to have a good spread of schools up to top 60 in your field. However, you cant be applying for PhD a day to deadlines, you need to apply way before deadline preferably ending of Nov. Applying very early helps in some cases.
As regards your SOP, you need more than 'ok' SOP to stand a better chance, you should send your SOP to people to help you review. You need to have a great SOP coupled with great LOR.
For fall 2019, look at University of Kansas, Kansas state University, University of Maryland college park, University of Pittsburgh,Northwestern (There is a young Nigerian prof in the Mechanical department, you can talk to him) and others. By the way if you have the luxury of time and money, you can consider re-writing the GRE to get >320. However if not, just apply to schools between 20 - 60 in the mechanical engineering ranking (If you don't have the ranking, I can send it to you). You need to understand that some crazy Chinese and Indians are applying to those same top 10 schools with near perfect GRE scores, research papers and experience. Try to apply to at least 6 schools (2 Top 20, 3 between 20 and 60) and 1 in the last range and not just 3 schools). Do an extensive research on each school you decide to apply to, go on LinkedIn, connect with international students in the school and ask questions about funding and prospect of getting a direct PhD offer. Make the graduate coordinator your friend, ask questions and be explicit. Search Nairaland to see people who have gotten PhD admission with funding and look up such schools. Getting Phd admission and funding is like looking for a job, you have to give it all Thanks for the response. I however do not have a Masters. I will look up the schools mentioned. |

Good day everyone. I need sincere advice from people with more experience here.
I applied for PhD in Mechanical Engineering (Mechatronics option) at up to five (5) different schools for this Fall 2018 in US. However none granted me admission except one with no funding. I declined the offer.
I have a first class degree in Mechanical Engineering. My GRE score is Verbal-151 Quantitative-160. Total 311. My SOP should be ok in comparison to others.
The only shortcoming of my application that i know of is that most were submitted on the deadline dates due to some challenges I faced then. Could only this be the reason for not getting funding?
Also other factor that might have affected me is that most of them were top schools including: University of Southern California, University of Michigan Ann-Arbor and Texas A & M College Station.
I need your advice as I am planning to apply for Fall 2019. Also which likely schools have higher probability of admission and funding?
Thanks in advance. |

But knowing CAN perchant for lies, false alarms and outright farbrications, I strongly doubt this news just like the Arabic exams at the police force recruitment, which turned out to be CAN illiterate incapability to reason appropriately.
On religionizing criminals, once again CAN shows it protects murderers and gives conditions on which they can be punished, murderers are now members of CAN who require them organising press briefing to protect them. They are not demanding the murderers case should be reviewed but should their punishment should not be implemented until Muslim murderers have been caught. We expect less from a corrupt body that collected money meant for defeating BH. You must be the most stupid person to live. Where were you when the same herdsmen were busy killing innocent people in their farms and settlement. They even posted wearing their choir robe and desecrating their mucical instrument.
