Adebayo Faleti Biography and early life

Adebayo Faleti was born on the 26th of December 1930 in Agbo-Oye, Oyo State. He was the first son of his father, Joseph Akanbi Faleti and the only child of his mother, Durowade Ayinke Faleti.

At the age of 19 he founded a theatre group Oyo Youth Operatic Society which was highly successful.

The veteran Yoruba actor died on the 22nd July 2017 at the University College hospital Ibadan. Before his death, Adebayo Faleti was a Nigerian poet, journalist, writer and actor. He was also known as a Yoruba translator, a broadcaster, TV exponent and a pioneer of the first television station in Africa, Western Nigeria Television (WNTV).

Adebayo Faleti was responsible for translating Nigeria’s National Anthem from English to Yoruba. He also translated speeches being made by military president of Nigeria Ibrahim Babangida and Chief Ernest Shonekan, Head of National Interim Government of Nigeria, from English to Yoruba. Faleti published a dictionary containing the formal or official use of Yoruba names.

Adebayo Faleti Career and Personal Life

Adebayo Faleti was highly successful in his career, he wrote, produced and acted in several popular Yoruba plays, and is also known for his poems. He was a teacher at Ife Odan, located near Ejibo Town. Faleti was also the General Manager of Broadcasting Corporation of Oyo State (because), which is also known as Radio OYO, Ibadan. In the year 1959, he once worked at Western Nigerian Television (WNTV), now known as NTA Ibadan, as a film editor and a librarian.

Adebayo Faleti had three wives, but before his death he had only two. His first and legally married wife was Mrs. Moteniola Faleti. He had up to 15 children.

​A renown Yoruba veteran actor, broadcaster, poet and writer, Chief Adebayo Faleti has passed away.

Adebayo, an old student of Ibadan Boys High School died Sunday morning at University College Hospital, Ibadan at about 6. am according to sources.

Chief Adebayo who happened to be one of the pioneer staff of the first television station in Africa, Western Nigeria Television (WNTV) died at the age of 86.

He was responsible for translating Nigeria’s National Anthem from English to Yoruba. He also translated speeches being made by military president of Nigeria Ibrahim Babangida and Chief Ernest Shonekan, Head of National Interim Government of Nigeria, from English to Yoruba.

Faleti has published a dictionary containing the formal or official use of Yoruba names.

He has received many awards, both locally and internationally, including the national honour of Officer of the Order of the Niger (OON) the Festival of Arts award with Eda Ko L’aropin and the Afro-Hollywood Award for Outstanding Performance in Arts

A family source who confirmed his death informed journalists that his body has been taken to anatomy section at the UCH.

​Pharmacists in Nigeria under the umbrella of Pharmaceutical Society of Nigeria (PSN), have blasted the Senate for claiming that about 42 antimalaria drugs banned by the European Union (EU) were still in circulation at the Nigerian market.

The pharmacists not only picked holes in the claim but said that the drugs being listed as banned were mono therapy drugs, which Nigeria no more used.

In a chat with the media over the issue, the PSN President, Ahmed Yakassai, said: “the alarm raised was uncalled for as the issue is stale and has been addressed in the past.”

Yakassai, who was visibly disappointed over the Senate alarm, added that “the World Health Organization guideline had okayed a combination therapy for treatment of malarial, which Nigeria had already adopted.

“The list of antimalarial medicines circulated on social media contains oral monotherapies, which are not the recommended medicines for treatment of uncomplicated malaria in Nigeria.

“The recommended combination medicines for malaria in Nigeria are Artesunate+Amodiaquine (AA), Artemether+Lumefantrinr (AL) and Sulphadoxine Pyrimethamine (SP), which are also the WHO recommended combinations.

“The European Medicines Agency’s website was searched and it was established that: Artesunate is used in combination with Amodiaquine, Artemether is used in combination with Lumefantrine, Pyrimethamine is used in combination with Sulphadoxine, Proguanil is used in combination with other active pharmaceutical ingredient in Atovaquone, Halofantrine is recommended by WHO for use in area where multiple drug resistance Plasmodium falciparum malaria is prevalent.”

He further said that the claims that the drugs will lead to liver or Kidney Failure does not hold water, as it has no scientific backing.

“The claim in respect of poisoning and kidney failure have no clinical or scientific backing”, he said.

The PSN President further directed the Senate to the WHO guidelines for treating both complicated and uncomplicated Malaria, which is already operational in Nigeria

Meanwhile the National Agency for Food and Drug Administration and Control (NAFDAC), Friday said it will reflect and respond appropriately to the claims as at when due.

It could be recalled that the Nigerian Senate had on 20th of July 2017 deliberated and raised alarm over antimalarial drugs that have been banned in Europe but are still sold in hospitals and pharmacies in Nigeria.

The Senate also mandated its Committee on Health, both Secondary and Tertiary being led by Senator Olarewaju Tejuoso, to urgently carry out an investigation into the matter and report back.

​The Nigeria Communications Commission (NCC) has said Nigerians should expect a new data price as soon as an on-going cost-based research is concluded.

This was disclosed in Abuja by the Executive Vice Chairman of the NCC, Umar Garba Dambatta during a chat with DAILY POST.

According to him, the commission had noticed that the level of data usage was growing across the country and there was need for an affordable and acceptable price floor for data.

He said this was necessary in order to forestall a price war in the data sub-segment of the telecommunications industry.

Dambatta disclosed that the commission was looking at other temporary measures in other to ensure that data services improved.

He said: “We have noticed that the level of data usage is growing. This attests to the earlier assertion by the NCC that data is going to be the next frontier.

“You recall that NCC attempted to do the interim price floor for data in order to ensure that we do not have a price war in the data sub-segment of the industry.

“This of course met with resistance from the consumers; and because the NCC is a listening agency, we suspended the interim price floor.

“As I am talking to you, there is a cost-based study going on in order to arrive at an accepted, affordable data price floor which will come into force as soon as the consultants’ work is concluded.

“That is, as soon as the outcome of this consultancy that is on-going over data price is discussed,.as usual, and is further consulted upon with other stakeholders who we expect will provide useful information towards arriving at an acceptable price floor for data.

“We are also looking at other temporary measures in other to ensure that data services improve.

“We are thinking about providing palliatives to smaller operators in the industry. I mean those with about 7.5 percent share of the market.

“We are in discussion with them in order to see how we can help them to provide data services in different part of the country even as we are talking with bigger operators to ensure that we find a way to improve the quality of data services.”
