Politics / 3,500 Oyo People Benefits From sure-p by fabulous4u: 10:01am On Dec 07, 2013
A total of 3,500 people in Oyo State
have been empowered under the
Subsidy Re-investment and
Empowerment Programme (SURE-P)
project.
Launching the programme in Ibadan
yesterday, President Jonathan
through the Minister of Labour and
Productivity, Chief Emeka Wogu,
noted that those who benefited from
the project comprised 1,982 males
and 1,518 females, with all the
beneficiaries of the project currently
working in 144 service units spread
across all the 33 local government
areas of the state.
He stated further that the
beneficiaries had received a total of
N246.8 million as stipends, while a
total sum of N29.9 million had been
remitted to the state as running/
management cost between February
and September 2013.
Governor Abiola Ajimobi, while
receiving the minister said, “when
you look at a state with about 10
million population and we are saying
only 1,000 or 2,000 people have
benefited, to me, this is terribly low.”
The governor also advised that such
a life-transforming programme
should be done without any political
consideration.
According to him, if the Peoples
Democratic Party-led Federal
Government discriminates against
other political parties in the
management of SURE-P, its aims
would be defeated. Consequently, he
called for the setting up of a
committee comprising
representatives of both the Federal
Government and state governments
in each of the 36 states of the
federation that would run the
programme.
He also said that such committee, if
constituted, would ensure synergy
between the Federal Government and
the state government on the SURE-P
scheme and other similar
empowerment and poverty alleviation
programmes of the states.
“I also like to suggest that we have
synergy. When I say synergy, I do
not so much like the idea of SURE-P
being managed without having a
committee of SURE-P with that of the
state government that will regularly
meet and monitor progress,” the
governor said.
“What I will, therefore, like to suggest
is that if we can quickly increase our
rate of penetration and impact, and
the quantum of participants, it will
be better,” Governor Ajimobi said.

GEJ just can't stop proving critics wrong, but this APC governor was quick to play down the impact without accounting for what he has done with his share

I am really disappointed in this "drunken" Leader, once again!
If some illiterate Soldier-President made the above assertions, l will excuse him but this is coming from a supposedly "Doctorate Degree holder" of a Nigerian University, for crying out aloud!

How is it possible for Nissan or any automobile company to start manufacturing vehicles in NIGERIA OF TODAY?
Anyone who has seen pictures or video of vehicle assembly plants (even if unlike me you have not even entered inside one), would quickly realize that almost everything is AUTOMATED and ELECTRICITY DRIVEN.

Now, for a Nigeria that cannot even power homes (l hear power generation is something like 2,000MW for a population of 160million people!) for four hours in a single day, is the President going to "BORROW" electricity from Ghana or will Nissan build a Power Plant as well, just to produc vehicles in Nigeria?

Can somebody in his "Forty laptop Crew" remind him that FACTORIES NEED AND USE ELECTRICITY TO FUNCTION?

I hate it when we publicly announce our foolishness to foreigners and l detest it even more when it comes from those in power!

This nonsense of building cars in Nigeria ended when Volkswagen of Nigeria (VON) and other "vehicle ASSEMBLY" plants dies in Nigeria, some decades ago.

One might ask, "who is fooling who"? Is this Nissan, fooling the President or the President, fooling his dumb followers?
Either way, it does not wash one bit.

If he is not dishonest, let him just focus his attention on one single issue during his 2 + 4 + X-years of Leadership: ELECTRICITY GENERATION.
Solve that and let the next administration tackle another issue.
Multi-tasking does not seem to be located anywhere near the medulla Oblongata of our Leaders, so let then just focus on one project at a time.

you are a big fool!do you want to to tell me that you are wiser than those in Nissan that carried out the research and SSW Nigeria as a good investment destination.

Mr man get your fact right and been a dummy
1)amaechis security aides were never withdrawn,CSP mbu recently challenged him to prove it in fact amaechi still moves around with a convoy,hr dares not move round rivers state without one, even his wife has a convoy to herself
2)the nPDP is an illegal party as ruled upon by the court and only an irresponsible government will tolerate illegalities .
3)there was no such thing as subsidy protest it was just a gathering of angry politicians he defeated at the polls calling organizing a rally, sharing foods, clothes and paying artiste and comedians to perform that can never be a protest.
4)Jonathan has never shown any sign of been ethno-religious either in words or by action and I challenge you to prove me wrong infact, it is your APC leaders Buhari, tinubu, elrufai, ffka, rauf et all that have been fanning the embers of ethno-religious sentiments both in words and I. action,or have u forgotten so soon Joe fashola proves his ethnic bias by deporting Igbos from lagos and how he goes about harassing them with KAI guerrilla's.

Uyi Iredia: Not bad. And possible advantages that readily comes to mind is reduced imports and increased exports, creation of jobs and utilization of local raw materials.

But some questions

• Does Jonathan know this is not the solution to Nigeria's fundamental problem of poor governance ? So he doesn't parade himself as a saviour because of this step, good as it seems.

• Will the prices be VERY competitive ? If not the project will be a huge waste because folks will keep on with tokunbos. I don't doubt Nissan is a respected brand here.

• Car manufacturing requires a very skilled labor force: is it local or foreign expertise to be used ? The casting of the cars bodies when common Ajaokuta steel co. rots, the testing where SON is struggling, and the likelihood of it being the usual local labor. managed by foreign expertise is to be views given the context of our dear education sector, just waking up from a protracted strike.

That will be all.
you of all people should know better on the issue of governance
1)is good governance not meant to provide jobs for people ?is this not one of the benefits to be derived from this policy?
2)is a serious government going to allow for capital flight and foreign exchange draw downs all because it is not ready to maximize its potentials?is this not one of the issues that will be addressed by this policy?
3)if you say Nissan is not a big brand then I'll come to the conclusion that you do not have the slightest idea of branding cos Nissan is one of the well respected automobile giants in japan.so pls get your facts right before commenting

You've splashed your low intelligence and knowledge over the www

To start with, I will say, is that all?

Next, the $200m is a loan, which will be paid back on a project that isn't the FG's idea

Next the Lekki Port is an idea conceived by Lagos

There's no fast rail between Lagos and Ibadan and no one uses those dead tracks to move goods

The 3MB is an existing bridge and I'm on the bridge now and the lights aren't working. Every streetlight that comes on at night in Lagos powered by the LASG. I have an office in Apapa and the Apapa-Oshodi Expressway is still as horrible as ever, even worse

The refinery, which has not even commenced, is not the FG's idea

Once again I ask, what has the FG done?
once again you've proven that hate has beclouded your sense of reasoning and judgement.
lemme just prove it with your first counter claim
if Jonathan has out of hate refused to facilitate the loan for Lagos state do you think your so called light rail can ever be completed in the nearest future?go and ask lateef jakande what buhari your slave master did to a similar project and ask amaechi why he is crying in the media ?
as for the lekki deep sea port it was an obj idea that wasn't followed through until good luck Jonathan came on board and that's why the FG has a bigger stake in it(20%) compared to Lagos (18.5%).
and your question was what has he done for Lagos ?it doesn't matter who conceived the idea but if Jonathan's political will to actualize this is seen as done nothing then I must have to admit that u are bias
