Career / Re: Switching From Chemistry To Chemical Engineering by faro02455(m): 1:55pm On Dec 17, 2022
Lexiskillz09:
Good evening guys. I'm sorry for the long story. But it's serious Please
Please I need ur opinions on this issue bothering me. I am a Industrial chemistry graduate. I graduated last year and just completed my NYSC. I want to go for postgraduate studies but I am having difficulties in making a decision on what to do.

Someone advised me to switch to Chemical engineering, (this will require a 1 year postgraduate diploma course) though I wouldn't mind if there's a guarantee I stand a very good chance in the labour market after the PGD and MSC. On the other hand, 2 bros in my area I respect so much discouraged me about switching. Both of them were of the opinion that it would rather keep me confused instead of helping me. That recruiters will consider a candidate with B.Eng Chemical engineering without a masters over me, while chemistry field will consider a chemistry msc holder over me also.
Bottom line, it's almost a waste of time especially here in Nigeria that I should just do msc in industrial chemistry.

I'm still young though. I Will be 22 on 27th of this month.

Chemical Engineering is entirely different from Industrial Chemistry. Chemical Engineering is basically Mathematics and Physics and Encompasses other engineering field so, don't make the mistake of thinking it's Chemistry related because of the name.

I will advice you to continue your Chemistry line and the part of looking out for more job opportunities; it's available everywhere. What you only need to do is to design your path, stay focused and continue to build yourself in your area of interest and I promise you, there are endless opportunities available for you.

<An appeal from a pained mother>
It all started when he was two and half weeks old. I notice he was coughing seriously, so I took him to Bowen teaching hospital in ogbomosho where he was given a drug but the cough still got worse. After two weeks, I took him back and they carried an xray test on him where by d doctor stated that the heart of the baby is big,which was not suppose to be.hence, we were refer to UITH Ilorin for an eco test.
The test result reveal there PDA implying that a hole in the heart with several pulmonary hypertension. The result was taken back to Bowen after which we were refer to OAU teaching hospital Ife,for another test.which revealed that d veins that carried blood from the heart to the body is too tiny and his heart is working with force,thereby the only solution is for d doctor to perform an urgent surgery on d baby within 3 weeks.
The surgery cost3.5million naira although, we have raised 1 million leaving us with a balance of 2.5million to go.
I here by solicit your support to help my baby live.no amount is too small but time is much limited. May God reward you with abundance as you help me to bear this huge burden. Amen

Programming / Re: Teach Yourself To Code by faro02455(m): 6:27pm On Sep 29, 2017
hobyner:
A lot people have this idea that writing computer code is complex, confusing and hard to understand, but so is a lot of things in this life. Only with much learning and practice do things become easy for us. You can teach yourself how to code and I recommend you start one language at a time and you practice consistently.

I began coding in summer 2010; I had just completed 100 level from a Ajayi Crowther University and was on that sweet long break. Although I had failed 2 courses that 100 level and needed to attend summer to re-sit the courses, I stayed at home and fell in love with programming. By the end of the summer break I had taught myself HTML, CSS, PHP and MySQL. When I resumed school 200 level I created a website similar to Olx from scratch solely for my school (www.droparena.com)– one of my failed entrepreneurial exploits.

Now I major in C#, HTML, PHP & SQL. Although I can code in python, php, JavaScript, java, C#, HTML. I don't remember every syntax for these languages but I understand them I.e if you were to wake me up at midnight and ask me to write this:

One = int(input("Type a number between 1 and 10: " ))
Two = int(input("Type a number between 1 and 10: " ))

if (One >= 1) and (One <= 10 ) :
if (Two >= 1) and (Two <= 10 ) :
print("Your secret number is: ", One * Two)
else:
print("Incorrect second value!" )
else:
print("Incorrect first value!" )

It would be difficult but if you ask me to explain it; piece of cake.

It's a conditional statement in Python that makes use of multiple ‘if or else statements’. One & Two are variables gotten from users input. The 1st If checks that One is a number between 1 & 10. If One meets this criteria, the program proceeds to the 2nd If which also checks that Two is a number between 1 & 10.
If One & Two match both conditions stated then the program multiplies One and Two, then outputs the result. Else if One or Two don't match the conditions stated then the program outputs either “incorrect first value!” or “incorrect second value!”.

Learning starts with interest, you have to fall in love with writing computer programs because without interest, it's hard to pay attention. You don't need to memorize every syntax of every language. You can start with practicing and understanding one language. Below are a couple programming languages you can start with and resources to help you.

Languages

Python – Multipurpose programming language that emphasizes readability and is used by Facebook, Google and YouTube.
Difficulty: Easy.

Ruby – A high level programming language that is used with Ruby on Rails Framework to develop web applications.
Difficulty: Fairly Easy

JavaScript – Programming language for making web pages and websites alongside HTML/CSS – most popular language.
Difficulty: Fairly Easy

Java – General purpose and cross platform programming language. Originally called Oak, name after a tree outside it's inventors window (James Gosling).
Difficulty: Moderate

C/C++ - Programming language used for system and application software. C++ was originally an extension of C and is commonly used for gaming development.
Difficulty: Moderate to Difficult

Must Reads
These resources are good for learning the basics through to intermediate levels with video tutorials and helpful forums. Code specific books can help you with a particular language once you have started but reading has its limit. You won't find out if you enjoy programming until you start practicing yourself. You can start with an easy language like python.

The engineering workflow are from conceptual design to Detailed design to Construction then Operations... If any of the workflow is ignored then you are certainly going to have a failed Plant layout and huge capital waste at the end.

That's the engineering statement....

Sports / The Olympics, I Reminisce. by faro02455(m): 9:41am On Aug 06, 2016
The Olympics; I Reminisce.

My love for football is really high, but my love for the Olympic games is even higher because true sportsmanship and genuine fair plays is always on display. The Olympic games had started even before Nigeria came into existence (lol); but to me, the games started in 1996. Yes, I saw my uncle shouting Anjuwaaa; even though I didn't really understand what was happening. I remember how we watched the Nigeria vs Brazil match on my grandma small president television; I even thought it was the final until I grew a bit older. I didn't understand anything, but I remember how I was laughing around the neighbourhood when Kanu scored the winning goal; thus the Olympic spirit had been established in my heart.
It was Sidney 2000, hosted by Australia that I had a better picture though still a lil boy; but I guess my crush for Australian Cathy Freeman made to glue to the T.V. I actually started having crush on her right from the opening ceremony (I remember my mum telling me"close your teeth...asewo oshi"wink.

I remember Eric Moussabani, the swimmer from equatorial Guinea; he didn't win any medal. He's even regarded as one of the worst athletes to have participated in the Olympic; but he left an indelible footprint in Sydney. Eric Moussabani was to have a swimming race for 100m freestyle,when all other participants on his heat had a false start leaving only Eric as the only one not disqualified and thus run the race alone. He swum with the time 1min 52secs. Making it the slowest 100m freestyle swim pace in Olympic history. How the crowd cheered him was more important to me because that was when I learnt my first lesson on courage.
Eric later in an interview said " I could have jump with others too, then all of us would have had the false start; but I was scared because I've never seen a pool like that before in my life" . Marion Jones stole the show at the Sydney Olympic games but Eric got many endorsement even than Marion. I remember how I was so emotional when he eventually finished the race.
Then I learnt that the most important thing in the Olympic games is not to win but to take part, just as the most important thing in life is not the triumph but the struggle. The essential thing is not to have conquered but to have fought well. ...to be continued......

zeongeon:
ISPON in general teaches you how to manage and adapt your HSE skills to the Nigerian environment for example in ISPON you hear things like community affairs, tribes totem, shrine, omonile, hostile locals but Nebosh IGC teaches you how safety is managed internationally and you see things like safe work procedures during winter, spring, heaters in the toilets and offices.

However, you can still function excellently as a safety professional with Ispon training as there trainings and lectures are designed after Shell Petroleum Development Company Standards.

Finally, Nebosh and Ispon are both good it now depends on you if you would like to carry your safety trainings and exposure beyond the Nigerian system.

Hope my rants did justice to your question.

God bless safety professionals.
I appreciate this reply alot

It is advisable to tackle the HSE Training from an NVQ Level 3 which is NEBOSH International General Certificate...This certification is now the basic requirement for those entering the HSE Profession in all industries.

If you have deep pockets you can tackle the NEBOSH International Diploma though it is advisable to have a NEBOSH IGC as a background or if you have a sharp brain you can take the NEBOSH Diploma which is NVQ Level 5 (BSc. Level)

NEBOSH is not the only moneymaking Abbreviation in the Safety Profession BUT nwannem please when you get this Safety Qualification get one with an address....Like the Ekwulobia Urban Mass Transit ....udoh! grin
thanks bro. But can you give the difference between the ISPON level 3 and Nebosh IGC?
