Jarus:
It's not possible. I wont approach a lady that doesn't pray or cover her head in the first place. That's the minimum.
I think a muslim lady who doesn't pray may just need to be encouraged. If eventually she does, there is a reward for the one who through the will of God directs her in the righteous path.

Jarus link=topic=370122.msg5255637#msg5255637 date=1262724431:
I abhor tribalism in its minutest form. I passionately dislike this 'marry only Kwara' thing our parents do. I have been a rebel in the family because of this strange stance. I try to make them see reason that I don't care even she's oyinbo or Igbo, in as much as she's a Muslim. I told them they can't stop me. And in fact, if Hajara's had worked out, I would have stood my ground to standstill and I know after serious persuasion, they would finally accept and bless it. I was ready to break the tradition by marrying that Nupe lady but due to to tribalism in her own family too, it didn't work out.

So I don't subscribe to tribalism at all. I don't have any problem with Lagos ladies personally, but then, one needs to respect one's parent's wish and amke them happy, even as one tries to convince them that tribalism is not allowed in Islam.
True talk. Our parents are only trying to make sure that if something happens they know who they are dealing with and who to turn to. I remember when I was growing up and my cousins will come home with b/friends or g/friends, the first thing out of our parents was "omo ile bo ni" "tani awon obi re" and they better name one of the well-known family or else,
I found myself in that situation, when I forbid my children from marrying a non-African, non-Nigerian, non-Yoruba (above all) nor a non-Muslim. How restricted can that be in the USA (all five raised and reside in America). I pray to God relentlessly about it. They know how important the Muslim part is (they all go to 'ile-kewu' here, and the 2 oldest graduated from their quranic studies even b4 graduating from high school) but they always argue about the tribe thingy.

Alhamdulillahi, the oldest (girl) is married to a Nigerian (Yoruba) Muslim. The 2nd girl is married to a non-Nigerian/Yoruba but a Muslim. I struggled to try and prevent this from happening but finally, when I see that the guy is very nice, respectful despite being an American, I gave up. May God answer my prayers on the other three, especially the boy.

Enuf said. I pray that God grant your parents' wishes as well as yours. Insha Allah, bi kudiratullah, very soon, you will find her.

Thanlks for this thread, may Allah crown your efforts w/success.

ROBBANAA HABLANAA MIN AZIWAJINA WADHURIYAATINAA QURATA A'YUNIN WAJ'ALNA LIL MUNTAQEENA IMAAMAN (do a lot of this daily).

My dear bro, it's okay to be choosy, just do it rightfully.  For example, if you choose a muslim lady that doesn't pray (as she should) over a christian lady that claims to wannabe a muslim in order to marry u, you are RIGHT. But don't choose a lady simply because she is from Ilorin and not from Lagos (very typical of Ilorin people - my mother is from there and my father has Ilorin family ties too).  There are ladies in Lagos who are very religious, respectful, highly educated and BEAUTIFUL too.  I understand you are trying to please your parents in that regards but my dear, don't waste your time, most importantly don't loose a potential lifetime partner to tribalism.  Like Lagboy said, DEEN 1st, other things follow, lets put the tribe at the very bottom of the list.  And Jarus,  make time to fish, you self no get time.  Wetin na?  GOOD LUCK!!!!

@poster
U are right about your observation. Gradualy, the REAL way of speaking yoruba is dying. We all want to speak english (and there is nothing wrong with that) but we are failing to preserve our own language/dialect. It used to be that we don't even speak english fluently until we get to secondary school, now, a 3yr old is speaking english b4 learning how to speak his/her own tongue. Many parents even forbid their children to speak any other language besides english. Hence, it's becoming more difficult for our offsprings to speak our own language Any Nigerian language/dialect actually sound funny or local to them. That is why the very few of them that can speak yoruba/ibo/hausa find it necessary to dilute it with english. What can we dohuh It's the trend. Abihuh

Hmmm! Good article, food for thought. It's a sad and sticky situation, I sympathise with the boy's family, most especially his father, for it takes a whole lot for a father to report his would-be criminal/terrorist son to the authorities. Wonders will never stop happening, in fact, wonders will happen where u least expect. This dumb brat, in my mind, does not represent Nigerians neither does he represent Muslims as a whole, he only represents the Al-Q. I thank God for saving those innocent lives! NIGERIA WE STILL HAIL THEE.
