Politics / Confusion In Presidency, apc Over Great Ogboru The Okah Coup Plotter by feddis(m): 11:51am On Mar 09, 2019
President Buhari and the cabal’s in the Villa having come to realize the role Great OGBORU played as a coup financier in sponsoring the Okah Coup makes him dangerous to democracy

That if Great Ogboru attains power as the Governor of Delta State, he will be dangerous having single handedly sponsored the Orkah as a businessman .

President Buhari have instructed the cabal to stand down all arrangements of security agencies and the military not to manipulate the governorship elections in favor of Great Ogboru but ensure one man one vote in Delta State

This clearly shows PDP is retaining Delta State.

Politics / Soldiers Abduct Rivers Commissioner Jaja To An Unknown Destination by feddis(m): 8:18pm On Mar 06, 2019
Ahead of Saturday 's governorship and state elections, a troop of soldiers led by an Army Major Mustapha Bello from a unit in Sokoto state acting on the directive of the Minister of Transportation Rotimi Amaechi has on Wednesday abducted the Rivers state Commissioner for Education Dr. Tamunosisi Gogo Jaja and taken him to an unknown destination.

Reports reaching the Peoples Democratic Party, PDP, election monitoring unit at the party's headquarters in Abuja shows that Major Bello who led the operation was sent specifically to Port Harcourt, Rivers state for the job.

The troop of military that carried out the illicit operations were led to the operation by Hon. Amaechi who gave directive as to who and who to abduct.

Reports indicate that similar operations is going on with specific assigned officers in Akwa Ibom, Bayelesa and Delta state that the ruling APC has lined up for capture in Saturday's Governorship and state assembly elections.

The PDP notes that the development is in line with earlier intelligence to which the party led a public protest to the headquarters of the Independent National Electoral Commission, INEC, in Abuja on Tuesday.

According to the party, the agenda is to truncate the election in those states if they fail to rig the way they already designed it in Favour of the APC.

The PDP election monitoring unit is therefore alert the public, the media and the international community of the pre election intimidation and harassment which is a prelude action designed to manipulate the elections.

Signed

Politics / National Chairman, Prince Uche Secondus Press Conference by feddis(m): 5:04pm On Mar 01, 2019
APC's 'Body bag' Election
Gentlemen of the Press,
Recall in my last press conference I told you that we will be briefing you from time to time on developments from last Saturday's blatant rape on our democracy.
Our Presidential flag bearer in the election, Alhaji Atiku Abubakar spoke with you on Wednesday and the National Publicity Secretary of our party has been interacting with you on daily basis.
I have therefore come to you again today in continuation of our unearthing the brigandage of last Saturday which I have tagged 'body bag election'
When All Progressives Congress, APC, leaders were threatening foreign election monitors with returning to their country on body bags we didn't know that they had designed the same thing for Nigerians. As at the last count over 50 Nigerians have lost their lives last Saturday most of them from the South South region where a division of the army with their commander were turned on the people on the Election Day. For a regime that appears comfortable with blood, the deaths they recorded during their campaigns were not enough as after their contrived ballot box victory and stolen mandate, they still hired some hoodlums and sent them to the streets to go and kill themselves and further inconvenience the grieving Nigerians while celebrating their electoral robbery ( May I crave your indulgence gentlemen of the press for a minute silence for the repose of the souls of all Nigerians who were murdered on the Election Day including the poor youths who were lured with funds to go and die celebrating when the rest of the citizens were grieving.......May their souls and that of the faithful departed rest in peace. Amen. They remain martyrs of democracy.
You can see that the nation has been in a sorrow mood for our democracy that was dragged down last Saturday, four years after the World stood up for Nigeria for not only conducting a flawless election but for going ahead in addition to have a seamless transition to an opposition party, but we all are seeing the direct beneficiary of that rare democratic disposition, General Muhammadu Buhari using the military to rob Nigerians of their right to choose leaders of their choice.
Effect of Militarization.
The clear effect of militarizing the election particularly in the South South and South East in addition to the killing of innocent electorates was the obvious suppression of voters who were either scared out or chased away. (Please see table)
Even by INEC own record voter turnout in last Saturday's election fell to about 36% from 44% it was in 2015.
Gentlemen of the press, you were in the field and witnessed the large turnout of Nigerian electorate in comparison to that of 2015. The military were dragged into the election to suppress and scare away voters and facilitate rigging. That is how you hear ridiculously that war torn Borno and Yobe states recorded higher percentage in voter torn out than some states in the South South geo- political zone.
Shamelessly, they have again started mobilizing to use the same military to forcefully take over for APC two PDP states in the South South and one state in the South East. Credible intelligence available to the party showed that the ruling party's main link in INEC met with party's leadership as well as the military to review the planned strategy to take over these states.

Kano, Borno, Yobe and Zamfra fraud.
While the military was suppressing voters in PDP strong hold areas in the South, a different abracadabra was going on in some northern states particularly in Kano, Yobe, Borno and Zamfara states where numbers refuse to add up. In Borno, Yobe and Zamfara states confirmed report shows that there was non compliance in the use of Smart card reader as approved by INEC rules.
The backend Report from the card readers for the various local Government areas in these states will this further.
In these states as in others, the data is inconsistent with the accreditation of registered voters in the local Government Areas and voting patterns witnessed in 2015.
The same applies to cancelled votes, in Nasarawa states over 115,000votes cancelled, Kogi 79,000 votes, Plateau 30,000 votes indicating that these high incidence of vote cancellation were designed to suppress the margin of victory in PDP strong holds.

Strangulating the Opposition.
As part of their strategy to ensure that PDP is distracted from pursuing its stolen mandate, General Buhari's regime has decided to intensify their intimidation and strangulation of the opposition. Some prominent members of the opposition have been put on surveillance and their names listed to be stopped from traveling out of the country.
Gentlemen of the press, you can all see that we have arrived at the place we never bargained for, full blown dictatorship and this is where I urge you members of the press to stand up as you have always done against this emerging despotism in our land before we become a laughing stock in the global democracy family again.
As I end this press briefing, I present to you some graphs to buttress the broad day robbery of our votes, may I also through you gentlemen of the press urge our members and supporters across the country not to despair but to remain steadfast and focused because like our Presidential candidate assured, we shall triumph at the end because democracy has come to stay in this country and is staying by the grace of God.
I also wish to reiterate to our security agencies particularly the Army that they are not at war with any section of her citizens and they must try to be professional in their duties by staying away from election matters as directed by the Supreme Court of the land.
Once again may I assure you that through you we will continue to brief the country and indeed international community of the anti-democratic behaviors of the APC administration? Thanks for your audience.

as long as their names are on the register, meanwhile unconfirmed reports out of kano are stating just like in 2015 there are serious cases of underage voting.

Card readers are malfunctioning in the entire south, and officials are not allowing people vote even though their name are on the PU register, same cannot be said in the North, as they rarely have these issues. In cases of card readers failure, they are allowed to vote ..

Politics / Atiku: I’ll Hand Over To Younger Nigerians by feddis(m): 6:09am On Feb 09, 2019
The presidential candidate of the PDP, Alhaji Atiku Abubakar, has promised to work to hand over power to the younger generation if elected. He said yesterday at a rally in Calabar that if he becomes president next Saturday, he would be the last aged president in the country.

“When I win the presidential election, I will be a transitional president,” he said, adding that time had come for all to work towards handing over power to a new set of rulers.

“We will actualize Ayade’s key projects such as the deep seaport, the super highway, etc to create massive jobs for people of the state,” he added.

Politics / We Will Not Accept Any Rigged Election Results – Secondus by feddis(m): 5:59am On Feb 09, 2019
The National Chairman of the Peoples Democratic Party, PDP, Chief Uche Secondus has urged the Independent National Electoral Commission, INEC, to ensure that the general election is free, fair and credible warning that his party would not accept the results of rigged elections.

Uche Secondus Man, 26, in court over alleged conspiracy, attempted homicide He also cautioned that there will be no attempt to rig in Benue State. Secondus spoke yesterday at the presidential campaign rally of the PDP in Makurdi. His words: “The leaders of the APC in Benue are threatening to use the Police and military to rig the Benue elections. They should be prepared for grave consequences.

Politics / Elections: PDP, APC Heavyweights, Others Lose Security Aides As Police Withdraw by feddis(m): 5:05am On Feb 09, 2019
Policemen attached to politicians in the ruling All Progressives Congress and the Peoples Democratic Party as well as others serving Very Important Persons in the country will be withdrawn ahead of the February 16 elections.

The Force spokesperson, ACP Frank Mba, told Saturday PUNCH exclusively on Friday that the withdrawal of policemen would affect all categories of VIPs, including state commissioners, businessmen and individuals with police aides.

He said, “The withdrawal of policemen is going to cut across all borders, including politicians, party chairmen, state commissioners and businessmen. It will affect everyone that has policemen attached to them.”

Asked to give the number of personnel that may be affected by the exercise, Mba said he could not provide an estimate.

“I cannot estimate but there are two basic rationale for the withdrawal of policemen; One, we need all hands on deck for the purpose of securing the electoral process.

“Number two, we also need to be proactive in ensuring that unscrupulous people do not hide under the cover of security or policemen providing security to create problems during the elections. These are some of the reasons we need to mop up as many policemen as possible,” he explained.

Saturday PUNCH however gathered from other sources that over 20,000 Special Protection Unit operatives of the force and riot policemen attached to prominent Nigerians would be recalled and deployed for election duties by police authorities.

Some security sources said the number of policemen that would be withdrawn might be as high as 35,000 because the Nigeria Police Force would play leading role in providing security during the elections.

“The Strategic Election Security Operational Plan is a big, complex operation requiring huge deployments; so, all hands must be on deck to ensure its success. The number of men to be recalled from private security duties could be huge, maybe as high as 35,000 or more,” a source stated.

The Acting Inspector-General of Police, Mohammed Adamu, had earlier given a hint during a meeting with Counter-Terrorism Unit and SPU commanders at the force headquarters in Abuja on Wednesday.

He had explained that the recalled men would provide security for local and international election observers, escort sensitive electoral materials and also protect critical national assets during the exercise.

Adamu said, “In order to ensure full mobilisation and deployment of personnel for these duties, we shall in the coming days prune down or order the withdrawal of SPU and CTU operatives that are currently on non-essential duties including those attached to certain categories of personalities.”

Within the context of the Strategic Election Security Operational Plan of the Force, the IG said the recalled operatives would be deployed to provide specialised protection for electoral officials, including ad hoc personnel of the Independent National Electoral Commission.

He added that the officers would also be part of the operatives that would secure INEC’s facilities across the country while some of them would patrol the public space before, during and after the elections.

It was gathered that some of them would act as a reserve force that could be deployed for rapid response to crisis areas during the elections.

Over 50,000 policemen are attached to private individuals including politicians, businessmen, former governors and senators and Very Important Persons across the country.

Past IGs had pledged to reduce the number of policemen attached to influential individuals but lacked the political will to do so.

The beneficiaries of police protection are known to pay the police authorities for the security services provided by the cops.

UP warns against deployment of soldiers

Meanwhile, the acting National Chairman of United Patriots, Chukwudi Ezeobika, has faulted the decision of the Federal Government to deploy soldiers across the 36 states of the Federation and Abuja during the elections.

He said the deployment portended danger to the nation’s democracy.

Ezeobika, who is also the party’s senatorial candidate for Anambra-South, in a statement in Abuja on Friday, said the decision was unconstitutional and was enough reason to remove the President from office.

He said, “Militarisation of a country during elections is a clear indication of failure on the part of the government and remains an act which must be condemned by all lovers of democracy.

“The decision by President Muhammadu Buhari to deploy the Nigerian military, tagged Operation Python Dance, across the federation during the 2019 General Elections remains illegal and unconstitutional and sufficient to have him impeached and removed from office.

“It is legally and morally wrong for the Nigerian government to call in soldiers and police in crisis-free, peaceful and calm states of Nigeria during the coming 2019 General Elections to intimidate the electorate.”

Ezeobika said the nation’s Constitution was clear on the circumstances and conditions under which soldiers could be deployed.

He listed the conditions to include the need to defend Nigeria from external aggression; maintenance of the territorial integrity and securing the country’s borders from violation; and suppressing insurrection and acting in aid of civil authorities to restore order when called upon to do so by the President.

On the suppression of insurrection and assistance to civil authorities, he said the President’s powers could only be deployed on terms and conditions prescribed by an Act of the National Assembly.

“To this extent, this third use of the President’s powers is subject to conditions laid down by the National Assembly. Furthermore, the power to deploy troops to suppress insurrection is exactly that; not deployment for election duties.

“While the President is free to deploy our Armed Forces to defend our country against aggression and to maintain our territorial integrity, without control, he can only deploy them against insurrection and other internal armed conflicts under the guidance and control of National Assembly, through an Act of the National Assembly.

“In view of the foregoing, it is extremely important that President Buhari, without further delay, reverses this ugly trend and have our soldiers deployed in accordance with the Constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria in order to enable the Nigerian electorate to go out freely to exercise their rights during the general elections.”

Conduct credible elections, US tells INEC

In a related development, the United States has called for a credible process that reflects the will of the people.

The US government made the call in a statement by the Secretary of State, Michael Pompeo, on Thursday evening.

Pompeo urged the Independent National Electoral Commission to resist pressure and intimidation in carrying out its duties.

He also called on security agencies to provide an environment conducive for Nigerians to perform their civic duties.

He said anybody found interfering with the electoral process or inciting violence must be brought to book.

He also urged Nigerians to use the elections to consolidate on the country’s place as a democratic leader in Africa.

The statement reads, “The United States government supports a free, fair, transparent, and peaceful election that reflects the will of the Nigerian people.

“It is critical that the Independent National Electoral Commission operates free from outside pressure and intimidation and in a totally objective manner.

“Nigerian security services must provide a safe and secure environment for the Nigerian people to exercise their rights. Those who interfere in the electoral process or incite violence must be held to account. The upcoming elections are an opportunity for Nigeria to solidify its place as a democratic leader in Africa.”

HURIWA urges security forces to be neutral, apolitical

The Human Rights Writers Association of Nigeria has urged security agencies to remain apolitical even as they deploy for election duties.

The National Coordinator of the association, Emmanuel Onwubiko, made the appeal in Abuja, on Friday.

He explained that the appeal became necessary in the light of fears in certain quarters that the deployment of military personnel was aimed at giving the ruling party undue advantage over others.

Onwubiko said, “We support the pro-active roles of the army as adopted by the Chief of Army Staff to stave off electoral violence.

“The Nigerian Army is a professional outfit and the army chief is aware of the significance of his operatives working under the legal frameworks of adherence to rules of engagement.

“The Nigerian constitution authorises the military to play these roles and the provisions as enshrined in Section 217 (1) of the 1999 constitution goes thus: ‘There shall be armed forces for the Federation which shall consist of an army, a navy, an air force and such other branches of the armed forces of the Federation as may be established by an Act of the National Assembly.”

Nigerians not safe to vote, Dickson warns

The Bayelsa State Governor, Seriake Dickson, on Friday warned that Nigerians were not safe to cast their votes in the forthcoming elections owing to threats by some political actors, especially in his state.

Dickson, who raised the alarm during a press briefing in Yenagoa, accused the opposition of colluding with some security operatives of stockpiling arms to cause mayhem during the election.

The governor expressed concern over the influx of arms into the state in recent times while the security agencies looked the other way.

According to the governor, his administration has been receiving reports on the activities of such politicians whose mission is to turn the Ijaw nation into shreds like the strongholds of Boko Haram.

He said, “We have to be concerned about the safety of our voters first before anything else. It is the job of security agencies to guarantee the safety of voters. A country where lives and property are not protected is a failed state. That is a ‘shithole’ country. So, nobody should blame President Donald Trump when he said African leaders were presiding over ‘shithole’ countries.

“In this country, we have had several instances where security men and women in uniform collude with criminals and terrorists to rig elections and undermine the peace and stability of states like Bayelsa.

“We now have partisan security officials who have become an armed wing of the ruling party. They are not interested in peace, law and order; their concern is more in political conquest than maintenance of law and order in this state.”

Dickson called on the people not to despair but to turn out en masse to vote for candidates of their choice.

He expressed optimism that the Peoples Democratic Party would clinch victory at the polls, and urged the Independent National Electoral Commission to provide a level playing field for all candidates.

Politics / Feb.16 Polls: Confusion In Southeast Over Buhari, Atiku by feddis(m): 4:52am On Feb 09, 2019
A week to the presidential polls, the people of southeast are clearly divided over their preferred candidate for the number one seat in the country. The cacophony of endorsements for the two leading candidates; President Muhammadu Buhari of the All Progressives Congress (APC) and Alhaji Atiku Abubakar of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) has left much to be desired. It began on November 14, 2018, when a group of Southeast leaders under the platform of Mkpoko Igbo adopted the candidacy of the PDP flag bearer, adducing pledge to restructure Nigeria and selection of former Anambra state governor, Peter Obi, as his running mate, as reasons for their decision.

Since then, it became some sort of hide and seek game between those for and against the endorsement, until January 24, when the apex Igbo socio-cultural organisation, the Ohanaeze Ndigbo, after a controversial Imeobi meeting, also toed the path of Mkpoko Igbo by adopting the Atiku/Obi presidency.

A communiqué endorsed by the President General of Ohanaeze, Chief Nnia Nwodo said their decision was a result of critical and dispassionate appraisal of the issues and the visible fault lines in the polity, including the analysis of the election manifestos of the various contesting parties, especially with regards to the restructuring of the federation and continued relevance of the Igbo in the Nigerian geopolitical space.

Part of the communiqué states: “Ohaneze notes particularly that a major political party (PDP) by the nomination of our son Peter Obi as the Vice presidential candidate has given Ndigbo an opportunity for inclusivity. Ndigbo must seize the moment; That the presidential candidate of PDP Alhaji Atiku Abubakar has made an avowed commitment to restructuring of the federation and reconfirmed same during his recent visit to the United States in his meetings with high-level US officials;

“In consideration of the above and other relevant existential factors pertaining to the treatment of the Igbo in our polity, the Ime Obi Ohaneze, therefore, hereby ratify the decision reached at the Ohaneze National Executive Committee (NEC) meeting held in Enugu on Tuesday 22 January, 2019, to adopt the Atiku Abubakar/Peter Obi ticket in the 2019 presidential election. Ime Obi therefore endorses and embraces fully, this ticket without equivocation, especially with regards to the position of Ndigbo at the Awka Declaration which insisted on a complete restructuring of the Nigerian polity. Ohaneze urges Ndigbo to see their PVCs as their most potent tool to ensure a restructured polity and for a better society.”

The first to react shortly after was the Anambra state government which challenged the process leading to the Ohanaeze’s endorsement of the former Vice President, saying that prominent Igbo sons and daughters were clearly excluded from the Imeobi meeting. Secretary to Anambra State Government (SSG), Prof. Solo Chukwulobelu, who led the state’s delegation to Nike Lake Hotel, venue of the Imeobi meeting, only to be told that it did not last more than 30 minutes, expressed surprise that the meeting could hold on a day President Muhammadu Buhari was in the zone, among other things, to inaugurate a mausoleum in honour of Nigeria’s first President, Dr. Nnamdi Azikiwe.

“We had expected Ohanaeze leaders to participate actively in the commissioning ceremony of the Zik Mausoleum, Onitsha, Anambra State. The mausoleum, which was started by the General Sani Abacha Government, took a whole 23 years to complete. We have read bits of the communiqué purportedly issued by the Ohanaeze leadership. We regret that they do not reflect the position of the people and Government of Anambra State.

“The position of the Anambra State Government is that Ohaneze should remain a united organization umbrella for all Ndigbo, and should not take sides with any party. There are major leaders in all political parties, including the three major ones in Nigeria, namely, APGA, APC and PDP. It is deeply regrettable that the Ohaneze leadership has chosen to go down a divisive trajectory capable of setting back Igbo unity for several years”, the SSG stated.

Similarly, Secretary General of Ohanaeze, Uche Okwukwu has since disowned the endorsement of Atiku describing it as a nullity. He also said that the endorsement was not in the interest of the Igbo. Okwukwu told Saturday Sun that Nwodo was on his own because the said communiqué was authored without the knowledge and imprimatur of the secretariat.

“I must say as the Secretary General that I sign the communiqué with the President General; that one never took place, I never saw any communiqué, in fact, no communiqué was drafted. And that’s why I said that the purported endorsement of Atiku is invalid. Beyond that, it’s not even in the interest of Ndigbo to adopt anybody,” Okwukwu said.

One striking thing about the unfolding political trend in the South East is that, it is not only the socio-political groups that have been divided, the cultural and traditional institutions there have equally been fragmented along party lines. The Association of South East Town Unions (ASETU) after its extraordinary expanded National Executive Committee (NEC) in Enugu, on February 2, backed Ohanaeze on the adoption of Atiku/Obi.

They said, as custodians of the grassroots, that the “Town Unions shall rise up in defence of the wishes of the majority of our people and stoutly resist any attempt by a few discredited individuals and political merchants who are attempting to trade off the Southeast for their personal pecuniary interests”. A communiqué signed by the National President, Chief Emeka Diwe, National Secretary, Gideon Adikwuru and Chairman, Board of Trustees (BOT), Chief I. I. Onwubuya, enjoined Ndigbo living across the country to take their destiny in their hands by coming out en masse, to vote for the Atiku/Obi joint ticket.

Others who signed the communiqué were the state chairmen in the five south east states of Ebonyi, Chief Ugochukwu Akpa; Enugu, Chief Paully Eze; Anambra, Chief Jimie Asoegwu; Imo, Chief Monday Ikokwu and Abia Sir G. U. Mgborukwe, respectively.

To show the extent of division in the region in the build up to the presidential poll, the Anambra State Association of Town Unions (ASATU) has since distanced itself from the decision of ASETU. ASATU which said it stood with the Anambra state Government in disowning the adoption, said that it has nothing to do with ASETU hence was not part of its meeting and communiqué that endorsed any presidential candidate.

National President of ASATU, Chief Alex Onukwugha told Saturday Sun, that Chief Jimie Asoegwu who purportedly signed for the state did not have the mandate of ASATU to attend such meeting or sign anything on behalf of the state. Onukwugha said that the association does not support Ohaneze Ndigbo dabbling into partisan politics.

“ASATU is not affiliated to ASETU, we are not their members, we have a firm position in Anambra state here that we are not part of them, so whatever they are doing we are not sending anybody and we did not send anybody to participate in whatever they did that gave rise to a press conference, we are not part of their press conference and that is the position of ASATU today in Anambra state.

“Let me say again that Chief Jimie Asoegwu cannot sign for Anambra except he is signing for ASETU, so he cannot sign for ASATU because he is not of ASATU. He is not an officer of ASATU, he was a former President General of his community and he has seized to be President General of his community for long ago, he is not an officer of ASATU so if he is signing anything he is not signing for ASATU, that is the clarification we want to make,” he said.

Not left out in the controversy is the traditional institution as traditional rulers in Ebonyi and Imo had endorsed the candidacy of President Buhari. However, a twist was introduced in the Ebonyi case as the monarchs few days after made a U-turn and adopted his closest rival, Atiku Abubakar. Another prominent Igbo group against the endorsement of the PDP candidate is Igboezue Cultural Advancement Initiative. National leader of Igboezue, Chief Chekwas Okorie said that it was politically expedient for the Igbo electorate all over Nigeria to vote massively for President Buhari.

“We must not be the odd group out of the imminent victory celebration. As a critical stakeholder, we must earn our claim to be supported to produce the President of Nigeria in 2023. Ndigbo are not cut out for the opposition.

“The very political leaders in Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) who are misleading our people into putting all their eggs in the PDP basket will be the first to jump ship and abandon them and relocate to the ruling party. We are used to their kind and we know them,’’ Okorie said.

Chairman of Enugu State chapter of All Nigeria Democratic Party (ANDP), Hon. Adonys Igwe also urged Ndigbo to ignore Atiku’s endorsement by voting their mind on election day. He said: “We hereby strongly disassociate and distance ourselves from the so called endorsement. We ask Ohaneze, as a matter of extreme urgency to apologize to the Igbo and the good people of Nigeria for their misconduct. I hereby advise the good people of the Igbo nation to use their PVCs wisely; since we as a people cannot put our eggs in one basket. There are Igbo in all the political parties in Nigeria.”

However, many other socio-cultural groups have queued behind the apex Igbo body. They include Nzuko Umunna, Alaigbo Development Foundation (ADF), Igbo Bu Igbo Foundation, World Igbo Assembly (WIA) as well as the political committee of the Enugu state chapter of Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC), among others.

While the fireworks raged, one major factor in the election in the southeast is the insistence by the Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB) that people should boycott the polls. IPOB leader, Mazi Nnamdi Kanu in his latest broadcast on Radio Biafra called on Igbo people and indeed their members to shun the elections and instead scheduled to hold a referendum on February 16, the day of the presidential and National Assembly polls.

Many see the push for election boycott as likely to affect the participation of people in the region. In fact, Ohanaeze and some other Igbo organisations have increased campaign on Ndigbo to ignore the call for boycott. Secretary of the Eastern Consultative Assembly (ECA), Elliot Ugochukwu-Uko, who has called on the Igbo to vote massively for Atiku noted that the IPOB’s call for boycott would give edge to Buhari.

Regardless, the World Igbo Union (WIU), an umbrella body of Igbo town unions in Nigeria and the Diaspora, has called for caution even as it said that the tussle in Ohanaeze over endorsement of the PDP candidate was a show of shame.

President General of IWU, Sir Meshak Nnanta, said the Igbo nation at home and the Diaspora are yet to endorse any presidential candidate and, as such, any so-called endorsement by any group is a one-man show.

“Such a one-man opinion can never represent the view of Igbo nation,” he said, and added that “When you see these people rushing to endorse a particular candidate, then, you know money is involved. This was the same mistake they made in 2015, when Ohanaeze endorsed former President Goodluck Jonathan, and when he lost the election, the Igbo nation went down with him. You and I are living witnesses to such avoidable mistake made by our so-called leaders”.

For a youth leader, Comrade Temple Chinedu, “Ndigbo have become first casualties of a contest between two Fulani even before the shot is fired.”

Of the contending forces, one will surely win and the others lose. And that will no doubt be determined next Saturday, February 16, 2019.
