In my Parish here in Abuja,Igbos easily make up 70% of those who attend masses,so,why should anybody complain that once in a while Igbo songs are sung in d church?
As a matter of fact,there are 3 languages commonly used in mass here viz Igbo,hausa and Gbagyi which is the language of Abuja natives.
I don't think anybody will be singing Igbo songs in Olumba Olumba church anywhere in d SW cos you will rarely find an Igbo man there.

The way individual tribes is turning the church is really alarming, the priest may had done it wrongly but he has a very serious point.
At Holy Rosary Ogba, I was in church one faithful Sunday that was suppose to be Igbo day, the Igbos expected that the entire mass will be in Igbo but Father our parish priest refused that in Lagos Arch diocese or any diocese it's the indigenous tribe that must be used.
The Igbos did not find it funny and they refuse to go for their own thanksgivings, I was so ashamed.
I have also attended several parishes in the East where you will feel so frustrated attending mass, it is Ibo or nothing, even when you try to attend societal meetings if it's not Igbo language forget it.
I don't know why the Igbos feel they own the Catholic Church.
If Father has given an instruction as far as the mass is going on the laity has no right to protest or disturb the peace of the mass.
In Warri diocese on the other hand they are way very well checkmated.
The Igbos must respect the Indigenous tribe.
Igbo might be very sweet in your ear but might be catastrophic in my own ear.

So I decided to create this thread because of an alarming ignorance which I noticed from the commenters in an earlier thread today about alcohol not being sinful.
The ignorance is about whether Jesus turned water into an alcoholic drink or not. The funny thing was that one of the commenters was bragging about his ignorance and was calling the actually correct person the ignorant one.
So here's the thing. The bible (all versions) clearly stated that Jesus at a wedding feast turned water into wine. There are two proofs here to show that what Jesus turned water into was alcoholic:

The first is from the simple basic dictionary meaning of wine: 'an alcoholic beverage'... Most Nigerians erroneously say things like 'Eva wine" when they mean 'Eva juice'. ( You need to check the containers of the beverages you buy. If you ever see 'wine' used to address anyone of them with zero alcoholic content, then just know that the producers are ignorant.)
So yeah, a wine by its nature is basically an alcoholic drink. There is nothing like 'non-alcoholic wine'...It is like saying 'my barren mother' or 'a dry water' It is logically impossible to conceive such let alone have it in reality.
The second reason is the historical context of the event. We need to know that this event took place in a Jewish setting, and for some religious reasons, having wine at a wedding ceremony was a necessity. It doesn't matter that this wine may be fermented locally. This is same reason why till today, catholic priests (and indeed some other denominations) use alcoholic drink as altar wine. It is historical and associated with the semitic religious practices.
In any case, what the Rev. Fr. Oluoma was trying to say was a simple truth...alcohol can be, and is often medicinal. In fact...medical report suggests that those who take alcohol moderately are healthier than those who either take it excessively or who neither take it at all. I once had a friend who as part of the therapy for his heart problem was asked to constantly take tobacco and other nicotines by his doctors. And these were foreign doctors. Red wine in particular is good for your heart.
So the next time you see someone taking an alcoholic drink...don't think he is a lost soul or a charlatan. Just make sure (especially if he is related to you), that he 'drinks responsibly'.
