Phones › Re: Before Samsung And Iphone Duo Phones Nokia Started Foldable Phone On Java by femi4: 4:48pm On Sep 15 |
streetpaddy: Long before the Samsung Galaxy Z Fold or dual-screen iPhone concepts dominated tech headlines, a quiet mobile revolution was happening in the early 2000s. Today, we view foldable phones as the pinnacle of modern luxury tech. However, the blueprint for the pocket-sized, folding powerhouse wasn't invented by modern tech giants.
Nokia started the foldable phone era decades ago, powering these groundbreaking dual-screen form factors with the legendary Java (J2ME) and Symbian platforms.
Folding a phone to reveal a massive screen is not a new idea. Nokia mastered the "duo phone" layout before today's smartphones were even a blueprint.
The Original "Cover Screen" and "Inner Screen" Layout
Today's foldables rely on a small outer screen for quick tasks and a massive inner screen for productivity. Nokia pioneered this exact dual-screen workflow using physical hinges and clever software orchestration.
Instead of a single bendable piece of glass, Nokia utilized premium mechanical hinges to bridge two separate user experiences:
The Cover Experience: On the outside, a traditional, compact phone screen handled dialing numbers, checking SMS, or viewing the clock.
The Full Screen Experience: Flipping the device open deactivated the outer shell and instantly booted up a massive interior display paired with a full physical keyboard.
Legendary Nokia Foldables That Pre-Dated Modern Tech
Nokia experimented with radical form factors that allowed users to fold, twist, and transform their devices. Several iconic models set the stage for modern dual-screen and foldable devices.
1. The Nokia Communicator Series (9300, 9500, and E90)
The Nokia Communicator lineup is the direct structural ancestor of the Samsung Galaxy Z Fold. Devices like the Nokia 9300 and 9500 looked like standard, thick brick phones from the outside. When opened horizontally like a book, they revealed a stunning, ultra-wide landscape display.
2. The Nokia 6800 and 6820 "Butterfly" Phones
Perhaps the most literal interpretation of a folding duo phone, the Nokia 6800 series featured a numeric keypad that physically flipped over the front screen. Once unfolded, the operating system instantly rotated 90 degrees, turning the device into a split-QWERTY texting machine.
3. The Nokia N90 and N93 "Transformer" Phones
Before content creation was a career, Nokia built the N90 and N93. These devices featured a multi-axis hinge. Users could fold the screen up like a laptop, or twist the display vertically to turn the phone into a handheld camcorder.
Powered by Java (J2ME): The Original App Ecosystem
What made these early Nokia foldables so ahead of their time was their ability to run third-party software. Long before the Apple App Store or Google Play Store, there was Java ME (Micro Edition).
Nokia's Java-powered operating systems allowed these folding devices to be highly versatile:
- True Multitasking: While standard phones could only text, Nokia's Java-backed platforms allowed users to open massive enterprise documents, spreadsheets, and early mobile web browsers on the large interior screens.
- Responsive Gaming: Java games dynamically adapted to Nokia's unique screen resolutions when a user unfolded their device.
- Developer Flexibility: Developers wrote apps in Java that could recognize when a phone's physical layout changed, altering the UI to match the unfolded state.
Why Nokia Deserves the Crown
Samsung perfected the flexible OLED panel, and Apple perfected the modern smartphone ecosystem. However, Nokia invented the behavior of the foldable phone.
They proved to the world that users wanted a device that was small enough to fit in a pocket, yet capable of unfolding into a massive workstation. They achieved this through mechanical engineering, incredible durability, and the power of Java software.
The next time a modern smartphone unfolds, remember that Nokia built that exact bridge twenty years ago. The shot themselves in the foot by not embracing the almighty android OS early enough |

Career › Re: Is Data Analytics Still A Good Career Choice With The Growth Of AI? by femi4: 4:37pm On Sep 15 |
TechCareerGuide: AI is changing many jobs, and data analytics is one area where I’m wondering how much the role will change.
Tools can now generate charts, summarize data, write SQL queries and help with basic analysis. At the same time, companies still need people who can understand business problems, work with data and make useful decisions from it.
For people working in data or considering it as a career:
Do you think Data Analytics is still a good career choice with the rapid growth of AI?
What skills do you think will be most important going forward — SQL, Python, statistics, data visualization, business understanding, or AI tools?
I’d also be interested to hear from people who are already working as data analysts. Has AI actually changed the way you work, and if so, which parts of your job have changed the most?
Would be great to hear some real experiences rather than just predictions. AI is doing all the analytics now |

Hemanwel: The 2026 Ballon d'Or is going to be keenly contested between Harry Kane, Kylian Mbappe, Jude Bellingham, and Rodri. Who do you think is most deserving of the award this year?
Personally, me thinks the WC shouldn't be the only criterion to determine who wins the award this year. I mean, it was just a one-month tournament, which took place in the middle of the year; and we have players who have performed right from the beginning of the year.
Therefore, I tip Harry Kane or Kylian Mbappe to win the 2026 Ballon d'Or No one deserves it...they should cancel it this yr |
