Rocket-propelled
grenades exploded into several
homes, killing at least 13 people
before dawn Saturday in the city
of Maiduguri as Boko Haram
unleashed a new kind of violence
in the extremist group's
birthplace, said residents.
Maiduguri resident Mari Madu
said he counted at least 40
thunderous blasts that began
around 1 a.m. before he lost
count.
"Each time they fired into the
town, we saw bright sparkling
flashes which moved with great
speed ... One of the blasts shook
my roof so badly that I thought it
must have landed on my house,"
he said.
Several homes were destroyed in
Maiduguri's Dala-Lawanti suburb,
about 20 kilometers west of the
city center, he said.
At least 13 people were killed
and more injured by the grenade
attacks, said Maiduguri resident
Idrissa Mandara.
"Eight persons were killed in my
compound. Five died instantly
and three died at the hospital.
We also have five others that
have been buried after they were
found dead in their homes," said
Mandara.
Among the dead were five
children, two women and six
men, he said.

MTN has issued a statement saying it’s
been drastically affected by the scarcity
of diesel and most of it’s base stations
that run on fuel can’t keep up with the
current scarcity.
Radio stations Beat 99.9 FM as well as
Naija FM have shut down services very
early tonight due to the ongoing fuel/
diesel scarcity.
Making the announcement on social
media, the radio stations stated that
they will be closing at 8:00PM.
Beat FM mentioned on air that services
will resume on Sunday morning but that
Monday could not be guaranteed.

Men are naturally drawn to a woman with
a curvy backside, a new report suggests.
'Curvaceous gals'
The "theoretically optimal angle" is a 45.5-
degree curve from back to buttocks – not
necessarily a big butt, the University of
Texas at Austin researchers determined.
These curvaceous gals would have had an
evolutionary advantage, in that they
appeared able to bear multiple children
easily, the researchers said.
"This spinal structure would have enabled
pregnant women to balance their weight
over the hips," said study leader David
Lewis, a UT Austin alumnus and now a
psychologist at Bilkent University in Turkey.
"These women would have been more
effective at foraging during pregnancy and
less likely to suffer spinal injuries," he said
in a UT Austin news release. "In turn, men
who preferred these women would have
had mates who were better able to
provide for foetus and offspring, and who
would have been able to carry out multiple
pregnancies without injury."
Evolved standard of attractiveness
This preference evolved over thousands of
years and is likely to persist for a long time,
the researchers noted.
Their conclusions came from a two-part
study in which 100 men were asked to
look at images of women and rate their
attractiveness. Women with a 45.5-degree
in the lower back were rated as most
appealing. The researchers next
determined from a group of 200 men that
guys preferred this degree of lower back
curvature regardless of a woman's butt
size.
"What's fascinating about this research is
that it is yet another scientific illustration
of a close fit between a sex-differentiated
feature of human morphology – in this
case lumbar curvature – and an evolved
standard of attractiveness," study co-
author David Buss, a UT Austin psychology
professor, said in the news release.
"This adds to a growing body of evidence
that beauty is not entirely arbitrary, or 'in
the eyes of the beholder' as many in
mainstream social science believed, but
rather has a coherent adaptive logic," he
said.
The study was published online in the
journal Evolution and Human Behaviour.

Gov. Rochas Okorocha of Imo
has called on the Independent National
Electoral Commission (INEC) to urgently
collate the results in the remaining
wards in the state and declare the
winner.
The governor made the call on Tuesday
in Owerri while giving an insight into
what transpired in the various polling
units in the state.
Prof. Oyewale Obe, the Returning Officer
for the state INEC, had on Sunday
declared the Imo governorship election
inconclusive due to the cancellation of
results of polls in some electoral wards
spreading across 23 local government
areas of the state.
Okorocha accused some INEC staff and
the Police of complacency with the
intention to commit electoral fraud to
the disadvantage of the APC.
He commended the people of Imo for
their show of support and solidarity
before, during and after the elections.

A 65-year-old Berlin woman
who already has 13 children is pregnant
again with quadruplets, German media
reported on Sunday.
The Russian and English teacher's
pregnancy follows several attempts
abroad at artificial insemination over
the last year and a half, German RTL
broadcaster said.
The woman, Annegret Raunigk, decided
to try to have another child because her
youngest daughter, who is nine,
wanted a little brother or sister, RTL said
on its website.
The TV channel will broadcast an
interview with the expectant mother,
who has seven grandchildren, on
Monday evening.
It said the pregnancy had so far been
without any major complications and
that if everything went well, the babies
were due in the summer and that
Raunigk would be the world's oldest
mother of quadruplets.
Mass circulation newspaper Bild am
Sonntag also reported the four-baby
pregnancy, quoting the mum-to-be as
saying the news had initially come as a
shock.
"After the doctor discovered there were
four, I had to give it some thought to
begin with," Bild quoted her as saying,
adding however she had not
considered it an option to reduce the
number of embryos.
Asked about the moral implications, RTL
quoted her as saying: "I think, one must
decide that for oneself."
Bild also reported on Raunigk 10 years
ago when she gave birth to her 13th
child and quoted her at the time as
saying she had only initially envisaged
having one.

Mpumalanga education
authorities have confirmed that more
than 3 000 pupils fell pregnant last year.
The department recorded a total of 3
196 pregnant schoolgirls in 2014.
"We also dismissed five educators due
to sexual crimes against learners," said
provincial education spokesperson
Gerald Sambo.
Sambo said the department has
campaigns throughout the year against
teen pregnancy, but that they need
more support from communities.
"The campaigns are yielding results but
the challenge requires a strong
collaboration with communities
because most of the sexual practices
are mainly taking place within
communities. We would like to urge our
learners to refrain from any sexual
activities and focus on their studies and
be able to graduate before they become
mothers," he said.
Provincial spokesperson for the
Democratic Alliance, Portia Adams, said
Mpumalanga has one of the highest
school pregnancy rates in South Africa.
Even primary school girls are falling
pregnant, she said.
"The high number of primary school
learners falling pregnant is [especially]
concerning as these children are
unlikely to be able to look after their
babies, let alone stay in school up to
matric.
"It is also concerning because these
pregnancies could be a sign of sexual
crimes taking place either at home or at
school," she said.
She added that the DA will ask Education
MEC Reginah Mhaule for a detailed
action plan on how she intends to
discourage scholars from falling
pregnant.
Sambo said there are a number of
programmes that address teen
pregnancies.
These include the Integrated School
Health Programme whereby nurses visit
schools to discuss prevention strategies
and sexual reproductive health.
The Peer Education Programme also
encourages learners to engage in
activities aimed at combatting social
challenges, including teen pregnancy.
Community Dialogues and Social
Mobilisation led by the departments of
social development and education
involve parents and address social
challenges affecting pupils, he said.

A typical day for Deborah
includes classes on a manicured
university campus and exercise in the
evening - basketball, volleyball or
aerobics. On weekends, she studies,
swims or just relaxes.
But the teenager's life now is one that
was unimaginable 12 months ago.
On April 14 last year, she was in a
packed dormitory at the Government
Girls Secondary School in Chibok,
northeastern Nigeria, seeking a night's
sleep before writing end-of-term exams.
Boko Haram fighters stormed the school
after sundown, kidnapping 276 girls.
The mass abduction provoked global
outrage and brought unprecedented
attention to an insurgency that has
devastated northern Nigeria since 2009.
Deborah was one of 57 girls who
escaped within hours of the attack. Her
life has changed but for the other 219
hostages still being held and for families
desperate for news, the nightmare
continues.
Despite promises from the government
and military that the release or rescue of
the hostages was at hand, there has
been no credible information
concerning their whereabouts in
months.
Boko Haram leader Abubakar Shekau
vowed to sell the girls as "slaves" and
later said they had been "married off".
Experts say both are possible and they
are unlikely to still be all together.
'Blessing in disguise'
Deborah and 20 other girls from Chibok
who escaped Boko Haram captivity are
now studying at the American
University of Nigeria (AUN) in the
northeastern city of Yola.
The privately-funded AUN does not look
like other Nigerian universities and
certainly bears little resemblance to
Chibok, which even before the Islamist
uprising began was a deeply
impoverished town with poor roads
and limited electricity supply.
Spread across a vast stretch of land on
the outskirts of Yola, the campus
includes an immaculate hotel, with a
restaurant overlooking a pool that
serves burgers and pizza, where faculty,
including visiting Western professors,
share sodas with their students.
"It is a beautiful environment," Deborah
told AFP via university staff in an email
exchange.
The Chibok girls at AUN are studying a
curriculum aimed at preparing them to
start a four-year undergraduate
programme next year.
Deborah said her dream is to work at
the United Nations "to help my
community in Chibok, Nigeria and the
world".
Others talk of becoming doctors or
lawyers. All stress the importance of
education. With degrees from the well-
regarded AUN those dreams may come
true.
But among the 21, the prospects feel
bittersweet, as international attention
returns to the plight of those still being
held one year on.
Thoughts of their missing classmates
are never far away and in their prayers
daily, they said.
"We feel sad with the advantages we
have now because so many from our
hometown do not have these
advantages," they added.
They also acknowledged they would
almost certainly not be studying at the
university had they not been kidnapped.
Mary put this conflict in starker terms:
"When the insurgency struck, I was
devastated but little did I know it was
going to be a blessing in disguise."
'A horrible journey'
The Chibok girls at AUN felt united in a
common goal to ensure that some good
must come from last year's tragedy.
"It has been a horrible journey yet we
believe that coming to AUN is for a
purpose, which is to be an instrument
of positive change in our hometown,"
Sarah said.
"We have not been broken by the attack.
We see ourselves as the people who
have been chosen to make positive
future changes not just in Chibok, but in
our country and the world," she added.
President Goodluck Jonathan's handling
of the hostage crisis was heavily
criticised, especially over his
administration's failure to immediately
recognise the severity of the attack and
to swiftly launch a major rescue effort.
Jonathan's defeat in last month's
general election to challenger
Muhammadu Buhari may have partly
been caused by his inability to contain
the Islamist violence.
Boko Haram, whose name loosely
translates from the Hausa language
widely spoken in northern Nigeria as
"Western education is forbidden", had
already been suspected of committing
crimes against humanity before the
Chibok mass abduction focused global
outrage.
But the girls studying at AUN suggested
the Islamist foot-soldiers who carried
out the kidnappings ultimately deserve
mercy.
Northeastern Nigeria provides few
opportunities and little hope of
employment for young men, making
them vulnerable to radicalisation, they
said.
"I forgive Boko Haram for what they
have done and I pray God forgives them
too," Blessing said.

As we celebrate a successful fulfillment of
this foreign democratic process, we must
keep our minds clear and our guards up. A
war seems to have been averted, but
which war and what kind of averting?
Is Jonathan a hero for handing over? Some
say by so doing he helped us avoid a war.
Firstly, let’s get it clear: I have long said that
no one will fight for Jonathan. I saw
through Dokubo a long time ago. The
minute he said, “that Fulani Buhari would
have done better for us than Jonathan;”
and that “I only support Jonathan because
though I see his is a failure, he is from
Otueke… monkey no fine but him mama
like am,” I knew Dokubo will never kill a
soul for Jonathan. It was all an act… a
beautiful act to earn his bread.
Bayelsa people though disenfranchised
with a low education rate; are some of the
most honorable and noble people in
Nigeria. I did my NYSC there and have
worked with these great people in other
capacities; of Nigerians no one disliked
Jonathan more than Niger Delta boys, the
Niger Delta militants. Simply Google search
for “Booed in Bayelsa,” and you will be
convinced when you watch how the youth
of Bayelsa booed Jonathan loudly during
his recent visit.
Let us be real with ourselves, Jonathan and
his PDP party failed Nigerians at large.
Don’t be misled by the massive rigging and
the manipulated results of the March 28th
presidential elections. The paltry 12 million
votes they “won” out of 80 million eligible
adults, was bought with $6 billion PDP
looted Nigerian petrodollars and a massive
military operated rigging machine, not
love. It was a heavy investment in sowing
seeds of hate, bigotry and strife; we all
witness these massive projects from the
pulpit by the PDP. We know how at $100
per vote, Jonathan and his PDP took
advantage of the desolation they have
invested in nurturing in us for decades;
making the poor wear on the Quran and
Bible to vote for Jonathan and PDP
governors. Be ready for more of that PDP
(People Desperate for Power) vote buying
and rigging come April 11th by candidates
like Agbaje and Ribadu. They have already
started from reports in the dailies.
Scrutinize their states and campaigns and
you will see the mischievous Jonathan
doctrinal ethno-fractionating messages
and the rigging money and machinery at
work.
Now that we are convinced that no one
would have seriously killed for Jonathan,
the second question we are confronted
with is: what if they did? Perhaps this was
fight we needed to have had. The Nigerian
masses have held their peace and suffered
too long; perhaps it is time we fight. What
have we lost by not fighting? Do we know
what Buhari traded to Jonathan that is our
right, in the General Abdulsalami Amnesty
deals? The Jonathan/PDP government over
the past 16 years (and by extension
through the Babangida/Abacha era of the
same family) has looted unthinkable
amounts of Nigeria’s wealth and land.
There is very little left for us people to use.
Buhari is in for it. Jonathan and the cabal
under this PDP have cut up Nigeria and
shared it among themselves. Cement,
agricultural land, oil, car manufacturing;
just anything you can think of is owned by
Jonathan and co. Nigeria is finished!
If Buhari does not repossess these from
them, there is no way we can exist a
humanely existence. And we saw Buhari
promise Jonathan that he (and his loot) is
safe. Did we who put Buhari there
authorize this? Did we really avoid the
fight or we simply postponed the battle
date? How will the Nigerian masses not
finally fight to reclaim what is theirs from
the cabal and the devils who work for the
cabal?
We are hopeful with the Buhari/Osinbajo
government but we must also be truthful
to ourselves. We voted for the firm dictator
Buhari but we do realize what we got is a
western-democratic compromised
politician Buhari, not that brutal one we
loved; and one who has to work with the
system with these hawks, these glutinous
senators and political godfathers around
him. What war did we avert? And did we
need avert it?
The good book says, “To everything there
is a season, and a time to every purpose
under the heaven: A time to be born, and a
time to die; a time to plant, and a time to
pluck up that which is planted; A time to
kill, and a time to heal; a time to break
down, and a time to build up; A time to
weep, and a time to laugh; a time to

The Chibok girls

The Vice-President Namadi Sambo on
Saturday urged Nigerians to support the
incoming administration of Gen.
Muhammadu Buhari to ensure peace and
development across the country.
Sambo made the call after casting his vote
in the Governorship and House of
Assembly elections in Kaduna.
He said all Nigerians irrespective of their
geo-political backgrounds should continue
to sustain the nation’s democratic norms
for the good of the society.
The vice-president, who was accompanied
by his wife, Hajiya Amina, was initially
accredited at about 11.16 a.m. at his new
polling unit along Police College, Kaduna.

Sambo, particularly commended President
Goodluck Jonathan for exhibiting the
exemplary character before, during and
after the March 28 Presidential election.
He said the president had set a good

State for ensuring peaceful conduct of the
general elections across the country.
The vice-president also expressed delight
over the reported massive turn out of
electorate across the country, saying
