updating their CV or giving the process
much thought. Mistake! This is (basically)
the reason you are still unemployed,
friend.
You’re your own worst enemy.
Follow these 10 points and be sure to get
a call-back, and soon...
1. According to bbc.com, potential
employers can easily discern between a
generic CV and one that comes with great
effort. So make sure you constantly edit
and update your CV according to the job
and department/company you are
applying for.
2. Keep your CV concise with just enough
of the important information. Keep it to
two pages.
3. Always, but always include a cover letter
to give potential employers a sense of who
you are and how you would fit into their
work environment and company culture.
Then remember to tailor this letter each
and every time you apply for a new job,
says The Guardian.
4. Don’t forget the basics: personal contact
details, education, qualification, experience
and references. Sometimes, it’s all in the
details.
5. Every potential employer would prefer a
presentable, neat and professional CV
according to the National careers service.
There are different formats to choose
from, but we say simple is always the best.
And please, don’t go too colourful. Oh, and
don’t ever apply using a selfie as your ID
picture.
6. Double check before you press send,
eliminate any spelling or grammatical
errors. That is the main sign of
professionalism. Get. It. Right.
7. The Guardian stresses that one should
understand the job description clearly
before applying. Clearly present your skills
that match the requirements, and fill in the
blanks with related and transferrable skills
while upholding your honesty and
integrity.
8. Include interests that are useful for the
job in active language, for example: "I
enjoy working in a team/ have excellent
leadership skills" - and rather leave out
irrelevant hobbies.
9. Make sure you are qualified for the job.
Jobs.ac.uk noted that before you send out
your CV, you should make sure it matches
your interests, qualifications and skills.
Otherwise, it’s just a big waste of time for
everyone involved.
10. Always keep a compressed copy of

Nigeria say suspected political thugs
were shooting sporadically at the Abule
Okuta area of Bariga LCDA in Lagos State.
The shooting was said to have disrupted
the accreditation exercise in the area as
officials of the electoral commission,
voters and residents scamper for safety.

The Super Eagles escaped some potential
hurdles but have still landed in a tricky
qualifying group for the 2017 Cup of
Nations.
It could have been better and it could have
been worse.
That ought to be Nigeria’s reaction to the
qualifying draw to the 2017 Africa Cup of
Nations as the Super Eagles find themselves
pooled in Group G alongside Egypt, Tanzania
and Chad.
Essentially, Nigeria need to win the group to
guarantee progression to the continental
showpiece—now in Gabon—in just under
two years’ time.
The two-best second-placed teams also
progress, but realistically, with 13 groups,
that represents very much a ‘back door’ into
the tournament. Considering too that the
2013 champions avoided some of the
genuine minnows of the qualifying stage,
it’s more likely that the points will be evenly
spread in Group G, for example, than in, say,
Group M, where Cameroon and South Africa
will both be looking to take a maximum 12
points from their double-headers with the

At first glance, it’s a tricky selection.

A draw against Egypt means a trip to North

reigning African champions.

A church was set alight in Kano by
unknown youth who ended up burning
the pastor's daughter alive, Punch
reported.
According to reports the incident was
intended to kill one youth who had
converted from being an Islam to a
Christian.
People in the area found about the youth
changing religions and escaped unharmed

The President-elect, retired Maj.-
Gen. Muhammadu Buhari, on Tuesday
said that Lagos State was too important
for the All Progressives Congress (APC) to
lose to the opposition.
Buhari, at the APC rally in Orile area of
the state, urged Lagos residents to vote
en masse for the party's governorship
candidate in Lagos State, Mr Akinwunmi
Ambode on Saturday.
"Defy all elements, whatever it may be,
and vote for APC from top to bottom,’’ he
said.
Buhari told the crowd that Lagos, with
its huge investments, could not be toyed
with.
"Don't attempt to be on the wrong side
of the centre because we are now the
centre.
"Tell your neighbours, your relatives and
even the opposition party to please bury
the hatchet and fall in line and vote for
APC,’’ he said.
The President-elect assured the people
that they stood to benefit a lot if they
voted for the APC.
Buhari said that he would prioritise
investment in Lagos infrastructure,
noting that the state is a "mini Nigeria".

sometimes stubborn, some of
us got hit. This was because
we still believed we were
valuable, humans who could
not be subjected to such a
harsh reality.
The next ten days was our
rude awakening. We realized
this was no dream. We had
gotten used to our captors’
names and faces. The forest as
a new home was becoming
familiar to us. This was real. We
were abductees, forceful
guests of the terrorists’ lair. We
realized these days that we
were not by any chance the
first abductees of Boko Haram
– there were girls here,
abducted years ago. Mothers,
who’d had kids in these camps.
Young men, abducted and
forced to fight for Boko Haram.
We realized that things will
never be the same again. We
started to settle. We realized
we had to be nice. And when
some of us died – from snake
bites, from rape and infections,
and being shot, we realized
our destiny did not have the
pleasant stories of life in it, the
sweet ending tales, but that
ours was to be a story written
with pain and blood. In these
days we cried. We thought of
home and saw our parents
shriveling away. We felt them
die. We knew they were dying.
Lord have mercy on them.
By the third ten days we had
begun to adapt. With cold
hearts, we teased ourselves.
‘You are his wife, I will be his
wife,’ we played. There was no
fighting here. Though we
wished to die and that death
would give us peace as it had
given some of our more
fortunate classmates, a
primordial instinct of survival
kept most of us from giving up.
Some of us cut ourselves,
attempting suicide. We
watched as their failed
attempts left them worse off
for it; their wounds treated
with what they had of
bandages and antibiotics and
new wounds made in their
backs with the cane, for trying
to take their lives. In these days
we had a new inkling of hope…
we had heard a rumor that the
Americans had come. We kept
looking to the skies, hopeful of
some stealth copters flying in
and some Navy Seals picking
out our captors and leading
what was left of us to freedom
– for whatever that would be
worth.

By the fifth ten days, we started
to smile. It was uncanny.
Something had started to
change. Was it resignation, or
perhaps desperation? Some of
us had not seen their periods.
Some of us had decided to
make the best of our situation,
of our series of sexual
partners. By these ten days, we
had accepted our fate. We
were going to make the best of
our new heartless lives. By this
time, some of us had made
alliances with our captors,
some of us had even set-up
others among us, elevating
themselves, getting less work
and stable partners while
working against others of us.
We understood. We lived with
beasts, this was a beasts’
world. We forgave them, we
forgave ourselves. We were no
longer chaste. We prayed. Yes,
we prayed. Every day we
prayed. While we worked,

What's in a kiss? A
study by Oxford University
researchers suggests kissing
helps us size up potential
partners and, once in a
relationship, may be a way of
getting a partner to stick
around.
'Kissing in human sexual
relationships is incredibly
prevalent in various forms
across just about every society
and culture,' says Rafael
Wlodarski, the DPhil student
who carried out the research
in the Department of
Experimental Psychology at
Oxford University.
'Kissing is seen in our closest
primate relatives, chimps and
bonobos, but it is much less
intense and less commonly
used.
'So here's a human courtship
behaviour which is incredibly
widespread and common and,
in extent, is quite unique. And
we are still not exactly sure
why it is so widespread or
what purpose it serves.'
How the research was done
To understand more, Rafael
Wlodarski and Professor Robin
Dunbar set up an online
questionnaire in which over
900 adults answered questions
about the importance of
kissing in both short-term and
long-term relationships.
Rafael Wlodarski explains:
'There are three main theories
about the role that kissing
plays in sexual relationships:
that it somehow helps assess
the genetic quality of potential
mates; that it is used to
increase arousal (to initiate sex
for example); and that it is
useful in keeping relationships
together. We wanted to see
which of these theories held
up under closer scrutiny.'
The researchers report their
findings in two papers, one in
the journal Archives of Sexual
Behavior and the second in the
journal Human Nature. They
were funded by the European
Research Council.
The survey responses showed
that women rated kissing as
generally more important in
relationships than men.
Furthermore, men and women
who rated themselves as being
attractive, or who tended to
have more short-term
relationships and casual
encounters, also rated kissing
as being more important.
Women more selective
In humans, as in all mammals,
females must invest more time
than men in having offspring -
pregnancy takes nine months
and breast-feeding may take
up to several years. Previous
studies have shown women
tend to be more selective when
initially choosing a partner.
Men and women who are more
attractive, or have more casual
sex partners, have also been
found to be more selective in
choosing potential mates. As it
is these groups which tended
to value kissing more in their
survey responses, it suggests
that kissing helps in assessing
potential mates.
It has been suggested
previously that kissing may
allow people to subconsciously
assess a potential partner
through taste or smell, picking
up on biological cues for
compatibility, genetic fitness or
general health.
'Mate choice and courtship in
humans is complex,' says
Professor Robin Dunbar. 'It
involves a series of periods of
assessments where people ask
themselves "shall I carry on
deeper into this relationship?"
Initial attraction may include
facial, body and social cues.
Then assessments become
more and more intimate as we
go deeper into the courtship
stages, and this is where
kissing comes in.'
He adds: 'In choosing partners,
we have to deal with the "Jane
Austen problem": How long do
you wait for Mr Darcy to come
along when you can't wait
forever and there may be lots
of you waiting just for him? At
what point do you have to
compromise for the curate?
'What Jane Austen realised is
that people are extremely good
at assessing where they are in
the "mating market" and pitch
their demands accordingly. It
depends what kind of poker
hand you've been dealt. If you
have a strong bidding hand,
you can afford to be much
more demanding and choosy
when it comes to prospective
mates.
'We see some of that coming
out in the results of our survey,
suggesting that kissing plays a
role in assessing a potential
partner,' Professor Dunbar
explains.
The importance of kissing
Past research has also found
that women place greater value
on activities that strengthen
long-term relationships (since
raising offspring is made
easier with two parents
present).
In the current study, the team
found that kissing's
importance changed for people
according to whether it was
being done in long-term or
short-term relationships.
Particularly, it was rated by
women as more important in
long-term relationships,
suggesting that kissing also
plays an important role in
mediating affection and
attachment among established
couples.

Dr Sule Bathner, a
consultant endocrinologist, on
Saturday in Bauchi,
commended the proactive
measures taken by relevant
authorities to check the spread
of Ebola Virus in Nigeria after
the death of a Liberian citizen
from the disease in Lagos.
Addressing a monthly meeting
of members of the Diabetes
Association of Nigeria (DAN)
Bauchi chapter, he said that
apart from the proper handling
of the case of the Liberian to
avert spread of the virus,
vigorous enlightenment efforts
had been sustained.
According to him, the virus has
been in existence for long,
consuming lives in some
African countries, but adds the
figure of casualties this year, is
higher than those of previous
years.
“The virus has no cure for now
but with quick intervention,
there is 10 per cent probability
that a patients could be lucky
to survive. However, without
proper First Aid, the probability
of survival is zero,” he
explained.
Bathner, who is also the Head
of Department of Medicine,
Federal Medical Centre, Gombe,
further explained that the
easiest way of contracting the
virus was through physical
contact with a victim or the
victim’s corpse.
“Ebola Virus could be found in
Bats, Monkeys, Gorillas and the
like, but it (virus) does not
harm them. The animals are
like reservoirs, through which
the virus could be contracted.
“Once a human being is in
contact with these animals, he
contracts the virus and spreads
same to others. The disease is
not air-borne and does not
have specific signs different
from other ailments before the
stage of incubation
“That is why it is advisable that
people should go to the
hospital for investigation upon
experiencing severe signs of
fever and other symptoms,” he
urged.
The consultant described as
highly disturbing, reports that
victims of the disease in some
countries were going into
hiding for fear of being
isolated or quarantined.
He warned that unless
measures were taken to
address such behavior by
patients, the spread of the
virus would be beyond control.
On cure for the virus, Bathner
explained that experts were
working on a vaccine, adding
that all things being equal,
there might be a solution to
the problem.

KANO IN TROUBLE AGAIN.

A suicide bomber
targeted students at a technical
college in Nigeria's second city
of Kano on Wednesday as the
campus reopened following a
Muslim holiday, witnesses said.
Details on casualties were not
immediately known after the
sixth attack in the key northern
city in the last week, with the
violence blamed on Boko
Haram members who are
waging a brutal five-year
insurgency.
The bomber targeted students
who had crammed around a
notice board to check their
assignments for a mandatory
government programme
known as the National Youth
Service Corps (NYSC).
"It was a huge crowd and
people were jostling to go
through the lists," said witness
Isyaku Adamu.
"A huge explosion" by a
bomber who was embedded
within the crowd caused
casualties, he said, but the
scene was too chaotic for him
to assess any loss of life.
Accounting student Kabir
Muazu said he was sitting in a
nearby lecture hall when a
massive blast rang out.
"We all rushed to find out what
it was," and saw the damage of
the latest suicide attack in the
embattled city, he said.
Kano has been hit by Boko
Haram repeatedly through the
group's uprising aimed at
creating a strict Islamic state in
the mainly Muslim country.
But the city saw a clear decline
in violence earlier this year, as
the insurgents appeared to be
concentrating on their
stronghold in the remote
northeast.
But the militants have since
April carried out waves of
strikes in major cities across
the north and centre of the
country, underscoring the
grave threat they pose to
Nigeria, Africa's most populous
country and top oil producer.

"When I used to hear about
illiterate students graduating
from Nigerian schools, I often
wondered how that was
possible," Wilsom Bonfere
rejoined. He said this in
response to the questionable
characters of Nigerian
graduates and applicants who
we see everywhere roaming
about with pseudo-files of
credentials. They are there in
the streets, villages, towns and
cities. We have them in great
number, and one does not

me, I will ask you to go and
read one of articles titled,
"PUBLIC SCHOOLS ARE PUBLIC
TOILETS!!! It does not require
explanation. Just go to any
public primary or secondary
school anywhere in Nigeria!
You will see dilapidated
structures with smelling
human excreta both in
classrooms and premises. That
is Nigeria for you. Massive
ignorance and social
negligence under the Sun!
Truth of the matter is that both
the country and citizens are
wasting away in limbo of
downhill. That is why dreams,
desires and longings are seen
everywhere in fantasy or
facebook. Everybody has
dreams and plans but the
means are not there for
everybody to realize them for
good under Sun. It is only
political thieves (godfathers)
and their thugs that are
making it (leaving large) in the
dead country, Nigeria. That is
the problem. So many dreams
and longings without means
and resources for the
implementation!
My candid advice here is that
the people should continue
fooling because there is no
food for the wise in any
retarded country under the
Sun. It is known in wisdom as
"Irony of life!" The wise are
trekking while fools are riding
on horses.
So, let us stop being hopeful in
Nigeria. All hopes are gone
because students are called
"future leaders" while sound
education is known as "hope
for the people". There is no
hope due to absence of sound
education in the country.
Hopeless nation with hopeless

The heart is so heavy, the eyes
yet to dry-up from tears, the
minds filled with pains, anger
and resentment, the country

members coping and

young girls, if at all, at any point
in time they were adopted.

located in Chad republic, Niger
republic or in Nigeria.
So ashamed of the whole issue,
it turns the stomach, what to
believe is absolutely nothing.
Believing in the government or
Boko Haram, is absolutely trash.
Civilians should be given the
necessary aids to use in
protecting themselves; because
as we can openly see that the
civilians and the force or the
military are now the same.
We should tell ourselves the
truth. Those that commits evil,
will be perished and those that
does good shall be saved. Don't
deceive yourself because God
can never be mocked, He
oversees all things, be it in dark
or light. Politicians should
please in God's name stop
playing politics with innocent
souls. Government should
come out open and tell us the
truth about the chibok girls
because we are bored and
tired with the whole story that

Facebook stock
jumped to record highs
Thursday as strong earnings
from the leading social
network sparked fresh buying.
The shares were up 5.6% at
$75.30 in late morning trade,
well above the record of $72.03
hit on March 10.
Facebook said Wednesday
profits leapt to $791m during
the three months ended June
30 in a 138 percent increase
from a year earlier.
Revenue in the quarter surged
to $2.91bn, with approximately
62% of that money coming
from ads served up on mobile
devices such as smartphones
or tablet computers.
Ad revenues overall were up
67% from a year ago to
$2.68bn.
The number of people who
visited the online social
network at least once a month
climbed to 1.32 billion in a 14%
rise from the same quarter last
year, according to Facebook.
The number of active users on
mobile devices rose to 1.07
billion.
"It was a very impressive
quarter on top of what we
believe were very high (Wall)
Street expectations," said Paul
Vogel, analyst at Barclays.
"We continue to rate Facebook
'overweight' and our top pick
as we believe there is still
plenty of room for numbers to
move higher over the next few
quarters."
The market was also
encouraged by signs that
people remain "engaged" on
Facebook, with American users
spending some 40 minutes per
day on the social network on
average.
"User growth remains robust,
while engagement continues
to increase," said RBC Capital
Markets analyst Mark Mahaney
in a note to clients.
"The most important Internet
trend by far is mobile, and
Facebook has become a mobile

Nigeria's battle against
terrorist group Boko Haram
received a much-needed boost
when Cameroon, Niger and
Chad pledged to assist with
forces to create a 'super army'
to combat the insurgency, BBC
News reports.
Each country will supply 700
soldiers, forming a 2800-
strong army to combat the
destructive militants whose
reach has spilled over into
neighbouring countries.
Border posts between
Cameroon and Nigeria have
been targeted by Boko Haram,
the group were suspected over
blowing up the important
trade-link at the Ngala bridge
earlier this week.
The plight against Boko Haram
has intensified after more than
82 people were killed in two
bombings that hit a market in
Kaduna on Wednesday.
The pooling of forces is not the
first time the countries have
joined forces to tackle Boko
Haram. The four countries have
been sharing intelligence
regarding the militants since
May.

The president of the
Nigeria Football Federation
(NFF), Aminu Maigari, has been
impeached on grounds of
financial misappropriation,
misapplication and
maladministration at a meeting
of the Executive Committee
held on Thursday in Abuja.
In a communique signed by
NFF board member Muazu
Suleyman, and forwarded to

officer Ademola Olajire, the
meeting reviewed situation
after the vacation of Court

The Kaduna State
Government has lifted the 24
hours curfew imposed in
Kaduna metropolis following
the twin bomb blasts that killed
39 persons on Wednesday.
The state Commissioner for
Information, Ben Bako,
announced this while briefing
newsmen after an emergency
State Executive Council meeting
held in Kaduna.
Bako said that 39 persons lost
their lives in the two separate
attacks at Alkali road and Kawo,
while 37 persons were
currently receiving treatment at
the 44 Army Reference
Hospital, Kaduna.
Gov. Mukhtar Yero visited the
scene of the explosions as well
as the victims at the hospital
and Gen. Muhammad Buhari to
commiserate with them over
attacks.

A man used a blunt
razor to chop off the testicles
of three patients at a Chinese
nursing home, state media said
on Thursday.
The suspect, who has been
arrested, castrated a mentally
disabled man aged 60 and
removed one testicle each from
two bedridden patients aged
53 and 80, the official Xinhua
news agency said.
The man "tied up the three
inpatients and removed their
private parts with a dull razor",
Xinhua cited doctors and
victims in northeast China's
Heilongjiang province as
saying.
Xinhua cited a member of staff
as saying that the suspect, in
his 30s, was mentally ill and
housed at the home, but
patients claimed he was an
employee.
Authorities in the area could
not be reached for comment
about the attack, which
happened on Tuesday.
Conditions in many Chinese
homes for the elderly and
disabled are poor, with many
establishments troubled by
insufficient beds, funding and
poor management.

backed Brown Ideye to regain

Abuja - Buhari Vanguard, the
pressure group, has asked
President Goodluck Jonathan's
administration to account for
the allocation of funds for
security amid concern forces
were not adequately funded to
fight terror.
According to a statement
signed by its Chairman, Jasper
Iyke Azuatalam, the group said
Nigerians deserved to know
how "huge" amount of money
allocated for defense and
security have been spent under
his government.
“There is urgent need for
President Goodluck Jonathan
and his government to give
detailed account of security
allocations over these years
that he has piloted and
supervised the affairs of
Nigeria as the President and
Commander in Chief of the
Armed forces. The best time to
do so is now,” he said.
The group added that the
rampaging insurgence in the
country and revelations
government requested $1
billion loan to fund the war
against terror warranted a
probe.
Azuatalam said a few days ago,
Minister of State for Defense,
Musiliu Obanikoro, revealed
that the government had not
made major acquisitions of
equipment, ammunition and
platforms for the country’s
armed forces in the past 25
years.
"Such revelation from a serving
Minister of the Federal Republic
of Nigeria is coming after the
government allocated and
spent N92,21 billion ($5,9478
billion) in 2012 from the 2012
national budget."
It is said in 2013, the
Government allocated and
spent about N950 billion on
national security purposes.
This, according to the pressure
group, comprised N320 billion
for the police, and N364 billion
for the Armed Forces, N115
billion for the Office of the NSA,
and N154 billion for the
Ministry of the Interior.
A breakdown of the 2014
budget also shows that the
President Jonathan's
government allocated
N968,127 billion for Defense
and Security representing
about 20 percent of the entire
national budget.
According to Aazuatalam, it
was "unbelievable" that
government claimed it was ill-
equipped in fighting terror.
“We are left to wonder what
this huge amount of money
has been used for, over these
years,” he said.

Abuja - Cross River State has
commenced the distribution of
agricultural inputs to farmers in
the region ahead of the plating
season.
The Ministry of Agriculture and
Natural Resources in
collaboration with the Federal
Ministry of Agriculture and Rural
Development have commenced
the exercise.
Speaking at the commencement
of the exercise at Odukpani
Redemption Centre in Calabar,
Edu Ada Emmanuel, Head Growth
Enhancement Support (GES)
called on benefiting farmers to
make use of the agro inputs to
boost oil palm production and be
ready to key into the state
government’s policies on
Agriculture.
She informed the farmers that,
with the successful flag-off of the
exercise, farmers are entitled to
50 oil palm seedlings, one bag of
50kg fertilizer and 1 litre of
herbicide.
The Desk Officer handling oil
palm, Ubana Ubi Bassey, enjoined
farmers to make good use of the
agro inputs.
He added that the government
had subsidized all the inputs and
farmers were to pay N6 300 only
for the three items.

Bayelsa State
government has announced its
finances are in a healthy state
having declared the sum of N2
billion as the total amount
available in its coffers.
This follows deductions of
recurrent and capital
expenditures spanning three
months.
State Deputy Governor,
Gboribiogha John Jonah,
disclosed the figures during
the monthly transparency
initiative briefing.
He noted that salaries for civil
servants over the three months
amounted to over N11,66
billion while those of political
appointees was N1,3 billion.
Payment of the N18 000
minimum wage arrears for civil
servants came up to N377,77
million.
According to Jonah, statutory
allocation for the three months
was over N12,45 billion but
there was no fund from the
excess crude account and
augmentation during the
period.
On derivation from the
federation account, he
explained that N32,56 million
was received while
government got N1,85 billion
as proceeds from value added
tax for the three months.
Jonah said the declaration of
the state’s monthly income and
expenditure was in line with
the administration’s policy of
transparency and
accountability.
He reiterated his
administration’s commitment
to probity and accountability.
The deputy governor said the
state is living up to its billing,
which include provision of
infrastructure, human capacity
building and improving state’s
internally generated revenue.
