It was mystery when Maria Cardenas noticed that her Virgin Mary statue of 10 years started crying all of a sudden. California-born Cardenas who received the statue as a Mothers’ day gift 10 years ago, said she “doesn’t understand why she’s doing it” but she believes it could be linked to the death of her cousin, Jessie Lopez. One of Cardenas’s neighbours, Richard Quintana, said he “wanted to come see for myself” after he was invited to take a look when he moved in across the street. He added: “That’s amazing. It takes the words out of my mouth– like wow. I’m so amazed.” The statue’s caretaker, who didn’t want to be identified, told Action News: “We’ve had priests come from all over to look at her, and all they say is that it’s a miracle. Anaya Ellick, 7, was born with no hands and doesn’t use prosthetics, yet earlier this week she won a national handwriting contest. At least 20 people, many of them children, were killed overnight by devastating landslides in northern Rwanda triggered by torrential rainstorms, the disaster management ministry said Sunday. “Up until now we have counted at least 20 dead in landslides that buried houses in the district of Gakenke,” the ministry’s spokesman Frederic Ntawukuriryayo told AFP. “Most of the victims were children,” Ntawukuriryayo added, without specifying how many were minors. The landslides occurred at the peak of Rwanda’s rainy season, affecting homes on hillsides and in valleys. “It’s a huge catastrophe,” the spokesman said, adding that rescuers had managed to pull some survivors out of the disaster area. The hilly, densely populated central African nation is frequently hit by landslides and the government has been moving people out of the most at-risk areas in a bid to limit the casualties.
