CelebritiesPhotos: Wizkid Involved In Car Accident, New Porschecar Damaged by fingard02k(op): 12:08pm On Jun 15, 2013
Wizkid was involved in an accident around 3: 30am this morning in front of GET Arena as he left the Nokia Lumia Beat party which held at the Oriental Hotel in Lekki. Fortunately, the only thing damaged in the accident was the Porsche Panamera S car worth about N10m which he got recently. Wizkid and other passengers in the car were unhurt. According to my paparazzi who witnessed the accident and took the photos, the accident was caused by a bust tyre. Wizkid, who wasn't the one driving, was quickly taken away in another car immediately the accident occurred. His bodyguard stayed behind to get the vehicle towed. See more photos after the cut...

CultureRe: Egwu Imo-awka Festival 2013 by fingard02k(op): 11:50pm On May 25, 2013
Awka, capital of Anambra State wears many cap. Long before it acquired that status, it was known for blacksmithing. But more than that, it is one of the few communities in the state and in fact, Igbo land that seems to have maintained some measures of link with the past in several ways.
One way it has been able to do that is through the Imoka festival. The community virtually came alive again penultimate Sunday for the festival which has been handed over from generation to generation on a yearly basis.
The festival which is older than modern civilisation was indeed an opportunity for sons and daughters of the town to celebrate the community’s mass return.
Against the belief in some quarters that the festival is celebrated to honour a blood thirsty deity, this year’s edition was a great departure from the past as no life was lost.
It had started with the sighting of the moon two weeks to the occasion with the Eze Imoka flagging off the celebration at Umuokpu-Awka which is the eldest of the sons of Awka.
According to Eze Imoka, “the cultural festival of the people of Awka community is the most popular annual cultural festival in Awka. This ceremony is performed at the begining of the planting season to appease God for a bountiful harvest, good health, peace, progress and protection.
“The programme is a seven native weeks activity with three particular days as the climax. This festival is not a festival of death but that of unity. Any town or village that does not have any form of festival or celebration has no roots and I wonder if there is such a people. Even the white man also has his own festival and they choose a special day for that. So, ours is nothing different from other places.
Historically, the festival is said to be linked to the sacred Awka monkeys which according to oral tradition shares reverence with the Awka deity.
According to legends, which was confirmed by the traditional priest, the brown African monkeys played very active role in the survival and safety of Awka people.
“Yes, during those days of tribal and communal wars the monkeys come to inform us of the plot by our enemies to launch an onslaught on our town. They even gave us information of where they were coming from and we took precautions.
“In appreciation to the monkeys we had some sort of a covenant with them that since they had saved our lives no Awka would harm or kill a monkey in the town. If you kill the “enwe Awka( Awka monkey), you would be made to go through the traditional rituals of appeasing the land and the monkey would be given a funeral benefiting of a human being,” he said.
A prominent son of the community, Prof. Austin Nnonyelu, echoed the the traditional essence of the festival, saying, it was as old as the ancient Awka town. “This is a festival that heralds the beginning of the planting season and it is a unifying factor in Awka. It was done by Awka forebears to show love and unity among families and other relations. The monkey which represents Awka deity reminds the people of that relationship with their forebears.
“These were also to them of worship among Awka people in those days. But today Awka people are Christians and not what it used to be in the past. I am from Awka town and as a sociologists I appreciate the importance of culture and tradition. However moves were made to change the name to Ekwu Umuoka festival but with time there would be a departure from the past. And like you know, culture is not static. There would always be a change due to civilisation and diffusion of cultures.”
On the Imoka Day proper, indications showed that the leaders did a lot of work to avert the problems associated with the festival in the past. The usual raucousness, rough and riotousness, associated with how some of the indigenes, especially the youths observed the festival, was gone.
The acrobatic display of motorcycle riders and car drivers along the popular Zik Avenue Awka was highly checked by the organising committee put up for the festival.
In fact the long stretch of Zik Avenue dual carriage road was barricaded up to the Imoka shine which became the venue for the cultural carnival.
Earlier before then over 4,000 monkeys had reportedly visited the shrine briefly as representatives of the deity and the spiritual flagging off the festival.
The event was heralded with the sound of the double-aged local ogene (gong).
As they played and sang the cultural folklore, chanting ancient war songs, the deadly looking ababa and akataka masquerade paced and jumped across the dual carriage Zik Avenue dancing in a rare display of valour.
The entire ceremony was accentuated by the flutists, whose dexterity with his musical instrument practically heightened the crescendo of the cultural songs to the delight of spectators and admirers.
Occasionally, some young men brandishing long whips would run to the centre of the road and start lashing each other. According to the young men the exchange of whipping depicts friendship and displays the symbol of manhood and the ability to endure the pains and hash pangs the whips.
This aspect of the traditional observance, was of course not for the lily-livered men or faint-hearted, who scampered to safety while the “real men” stood solidly to take the pains.
Eventuallthe was charged atmosphere was tempered by a long file of elderly men wearing brown sack cloths with a local bowler hats adorned with eagle feathers. Wit their den guns slung across their shoulders which apparently depicted one of the Awka aged-long profession of hunting, the message they tried to send was unmistakable.
Awka people were known to be great hunters and even till date the hunting business still thrives as visitors to the ancient town still stop to exploit the privilege of buying nchi (grass cutters) mgbada (antelopes) atu (Buffalos) from hunters displaying their games along Amansea Aguoka-kwata junctions of Onitsha-Awka-Enugu express road.
The long den guns further showcased the popular blacksmithing art of the people who it was gathered produced enough arms used during the Biafra-Nigerian civil war.
The women edition of the festival, was no less apparent in the display of local fabrication activities of the community with metals. Two days earlier, some of them, some quite aged, were seen wearing brass and copper beads, fashioned by their men.
Inside the Imoka shrine, the traditional titled men and clan heads assembled in their numbers, exchanging title greetings over large jars of up wine and breaking of kola nuts.
Close to the main entrance of the shrine was the holy of holies of the shrine painted in white with Eze Imoka, sitted on a traditional stool decorated with animal skin and a local bowl of white clay (Nzu). Family heads and spiritual heads of several homesteads would kneel before it, present kola nuts to make a supplications and rub their eyelid with the white clay as a representation of peace in the home, unity and love among kinsmen and prosperity in the coming agricultural season.
While the supplications went on, the masquerades which signify the presence of Awka forebearers had taken enough rest and the arena would come alive again with the dancing and exchanging of whips by young men.
The cultural metal gong and the sounding of the solo speaking Ikolo drum made out of Iroko trees electrified the arena.
Speaking at the occasion, the President General of Awka Development Union Nigeria (ADUN) Engr Anthony Anene Okechukwu said: “This is a festivals that started about 800 years ago aimed at knowing the number of Awka people at home and those abroad. It was like a census exercise for Awka people. The sighting of the moon is done through the calculation of Amikwo people and they are the people that give the Luna months. “The women had their own earlier before the grand finale of the festival and they are women from the age brackets of 60yeras and above. The meal that is served at the occasion is Onugbu soup (bitter leaf) with rich source and eaten with pound yam”.
CultureEgwu Imo-awka Festival 2013 by fingard02k(op): 11:49pm On May 25, 2013
The Imo-Oka festival is a week long festival of masquerades and dances held in May at the beginning of the farming season in honor of a female deity who it is hoped would make the land fertile and yield boutiful crops. The festival starts (26th may 2013) with Awka indigenes visiting the community of Umuokpu with masquerades and it ends with the visit of the Imo-Oka stream on the final day (31th may 2013) which is heralded by a heavy rain that falls in the late afternoon.
There are four major events performed during the festival, the ede-mmuo, ogwu oghugha, egwu Opu-Eke and Egwu Imo-Oka. Egwu Opu Eke is a rich cultural dance performed by female worshippers of Imo-Oka shrine which includes priestesses and ordinary women alike decorated in colorful costume dancing in the market square in honor of the deity controlling the shrine.

European Football (EPL, UEFA, La Liga)Breaking News : Fc Barcelona Agreed A Deal To Sign Neymar by fingard02k(op): 7:18pm On May 22, 2013
Barcelona Agree Deal to Sign Neymar: Brazilian Starlet to Make Nou Camp July Move After Confederations Cup

Nou Camp side reportedly snap up much sought after youngster.

Barcelona have reportedly agreed a deal to sign Santos striker Neymar according to Spanish source Marca.

The Nou Camp side are one of many of Europe’s ‘Elite’ tracking the 21 year old Brazilian international and this source claims that the Catalan club have signed an agreement with Neymar that will see the youngster join the club in July after taking part in the Confederations Cup.

Such a move could mean that this weekend’s clash between Santos and Flamengo could be the last Neymar plays for the club he joined as an 11 year old, though there is talk of allowing the player to return for a farewell fixture before the 2013/14 La Liga season kicks-off.

Neymar’s current Santos contract is due to run until the summer of 2014 but does include a €65m (£55.7m) release clause which it appears will be triggered by Barcelona, such a move could be officially confirmed today.

The Brazilian international is considered by many to be one of the top young talents in world football and his record in his native country can not be argued with, the forward netting 136 goals in 222 fixtures as well as 20 goals in 32 appearances for his national team.

However Neymar will find life in European football an entirely different prospect and it will be interesting to see just how much of an impact the Santos man will make when he leaves Brazil.

CultureThe 12 Top Reasons Why Igbos And Yorubas Should Not Marry By Vera Ezimora by fingard02k(op): 4:07pm On May 20, 2013
By Vera Ezimora

Whether you are aware of it or not, many inter-tribal relationships have died an untimely death because of the tribal differences between the couple. Parents, elders, and friends have rained down fire and brimstone to see to it that this sacrilegious union does not get to the altar. The strong couples come out of it beaten, bruised, but alive nonetheless. The weaker ones — well, they inspire me to write this.

Couples who are NOT the people I’m talking about (but who look good on my blog)

The most popular union seems to be the one between the Igbos and the Yorubas. With this in mind, I have compiled a list, specially for everyone who is currently in such a relationship. If you have been pressured into breaking up because of tribal differences and you have no idea why you should – or if you should, then I am here to help you make that decision. Please read, digest, and understand the lists below.

Reasons Igbos Should NOT Marry Yorubas:

1. They’re dirty.

2. All they know how to do is party.

3. They eat too much oil.

4. Their women flirt/sleep around too much.

5. Their men will ALWAYS cheat with a Yoruba woman.

6. They are loud and obnoxious. You can hear them from a mile away.

7. They are wild. They are the real “Akata” people.

8. They are Nigeria’s problem.

9. They don’t understand the Igbo culture.

10. They do too much juju.

11. They betrayed the Igbos during the Biafran war.

12. And to top the list, they are not Igbo.

Reasons Yorubas Should NOT Marry Igbos:

1. They’re rude; they have no respect.

2. All they know how to do is chase money.

3. Their pounded yam is as hard as stone.

4. They don’t put enough oil and spice in their food.

5. Their in-laws are wicked! The husband’s family will always maltreat the woman.

6. They cannot speak Yoruba, and even if they can, they do not know our culture.

7. They will sell their brother for money.

8. They won’t let us play our fuji music at home.

9. They’re Nigeria’s problem. They keep trying to divide us.

10. When their women die, their bodies have to be returned to Igbo Land to be buried.

11. They eat human beings.

12. And the mother of all crimes, they are not Yoruba.

Top 12 Reasons You Should NOT Consider Before Getting Married

1. He/she does not appreciate you.

2. He/she has a turbulent past and a shaky present.

3. He/she can never be faithful to you. And you know this.

4. You have nothing in common, except your tribe, of course.

5. Your dreams, values, and aspirations couldn’t be further apart from each other – even if you stretched them thin.

6. He/she just doesn’t get you.

7. He/she knows how to bring out the worst in you.

8. You cannot quite place your finger on it, but you know that something isn’t right with this relationship.

9. You know that you know that you know that you cannot count on him/her to be there when you need him/her.

10. He/she has no ambition whatsoever.

11. Even with a gun to your head, you cannot vouch for him/her.

12. And the least of all, he/she has done nothing to imply that he/she might be remotely in love with you.

Bonus reason: he/she continuously picks his/her friends and family over you.

If you find yourself confused by the tone of this list, go back to the beginning and read it again till the end. And just like the tributes in The Hunger Games, may the odds be ever in your favor.

Alternatively, you can find a partner who is Chinese-Iraqi, born in India, and fluent in Portuguese and Italian. There is no list for that. Yet.

PoliticsJustice Gunmi Resigns, Becomes Emir In Zamfara by fingard02k(op): 3:42am On May 16, 2013
ABUJA — Barely three weeks after the National Judicial Council, NJC, concluded plans to visit a petition seeking his sack over alleged judicial impropriety, the Chief Judge of the Federal Capital Territory, Justice Lawal Gunmi, has voluntarily resigned from office.

Investigations by Vanguard revealed that Justice Gunmi who is among the 21 judges currently under probe by the NJC, tendered his resignation letter on Tuesday, a day after he was crowned as the new Emir of Gunmi community in Zamfara State.

Indications further emerged that he has already forwarded his letter of voluntary retirement to both the NJC presided over by the Chief Justice of Nigeria, Justice Mariam Aloma Muhktar and the Federal Judicial Service Commission, FJSC.

He was said to have given the Minister of the FCT, Senator Mohammed Bala, prior notice of his intention to honourably bow out of service, though his appointment is due to elapse in 2015.

The CJ, who was on Sunday turbaned to replace the former Emir of Gunmi town, Alhaji Aliyu Abara who died on May 7, was appointed to pilot the affairs of the high court in 2004.

Specifically, a coalition of over 150 anti-corruption organisations under the aegis of Civil Society Network against Corruption, CSNAC, had in their petition to the CJN, called for an immediate probe of the CJ, who they said had mismanaged funds appropriated to the high court.

They further referred the NJC to the book that was published by former FCT Minister, Mallam Nasir El-Rufai, “The Accidental Public Servant” especially on page 202.

According to a petition signed by Chairman of the group Mr Olanrewaju Suraju, “Mallam Nasir El-Rufai stated in his book that in appreciation of the support offered the FCT judiciary (under Chief Judge, Justice Lawal Hassan Gummi) during his tenure as Minister of the FCT, he, Mallam el-Rufai decided to budget an annual grant to support the judiciary.

“We are well aware that these grants/allocations were outside the FCT judiciary budget. We are therefore, by this petition demanding that the National Judicial Council, NJC, undertake a thorough investigation into these allocations, their legality and use; and make public the outcome(s) to guarantee the respect for and integrity of the Judiciary. This demand is in line with other investigations of the NJC, under your leadership, to sanitize and reposition the judiciary.”

MASSOB members face felony charge
Our Reporter May 11, 2013 7 Comments »

From GODDY OSUJI, Abakaliki

Nine members of the Movement for the Actualisation of the Sovereign State of Biafra (MASSOB) arrested in Ebonyi State early in the week were yesterday remanded in Abakaliki Federal Prisons. They are being charged for alleged conspiracy to commit felony.

The remanded MASSOB members are among the 14 people, whose bus was intercepted at Nkwoagu, in Abakaliki Local Government Area of Ebonyi State by soldiers, on their way to Okwe, Okigwe, the hometown of MASSOB leader, Chief Ralph Uwazurike.

The nine MASSOB members were arraigned before Magistrate Lazarus Nwokah for “unlawful society, plot to commit felony and causing extreme fear to members of the public with their uniform and thereby, committing an offence punishable under section 516A (a), section 63 of the Criminal code cap 33 vol.1 Laws of Ebonyi State of Nigeria 2009 and section 12 (1)(a) and punishable under section 12 (2) of the Ebonyi State Internal Security Enforcement and Related Matters Laws Cap 55 Vol.2 of Ebonyi State of Nigeria 2009.”

Nwokah adjourned the matter sine die for lack of jurisdiction and transferred the case to the state’s High Court for further adjudication, even as the bail application for the accused by defence counsel, Barrister Jerry Ezenyi, was rejected by the court.

The court charged the police to desist from arresting innocent citizens of the country and pushing them to the court for no just cause. Reacting, to the court’s order, Director of Information of MASSOB, Mr. Uchenna Madu, raised the alarm over the non-arraignment of five other members of the group who were arrested along side others. He expressed fears over their safety and wondered why they were not brought to court, while calling on the state police command to release them. He said: “Fourteen of our members were arrested and today they arraigned only nine.

Where are the others? That’s what I’m asking. Maybe the police are still keeping them somewhere. Why must they continue to frustrate us? There is a limit to everything. Why must they arrest 14 MASSOB members and arraign 9 and keep the other five? Those yet to be arraigned are Peter Oga, John Ewo, Emeka Agwu, Uche Okoro and Patrick Egwu. Where are they? What are they planning? These things are making us uncomfortable. They should stop pushing us to the wall. Let them arraign the other five and stop pushing us to the wall.”

He wondered why MASSOB members being charged with treason. “How can you charge MASSOB that it wants to over throw the government? We are non-violent but we have people who are violent and threatening, but they are not charged with treason. MASSOB members are being charged and thrown into the prison because of the system we are operating here. We condemn the verdict of the court, though we will still go to the High Court and apply for their bail.
