Sometime in 2009, ‘Mr’ (as he preferred to be addressed) Peter Obi, governor Of Anambra State at the time, visited Dim Chukwuemeka Odumegwu Ojukwu and myself at Dallas, Texas. I insisted on taking him to the luxury men’s emporium at Nieman Marcus to buy a smart black suit. When we got there, he was busy doing the dollar to naira currency conversions. The suit that was a perfect match for him was a dapper Tom Ford suit with a price tag of $3,985 plus tax. He did the calculations and told me, ‘Do you know how many students this amount of money can train in Nigeria?’ I reminded him that he was the governor, as well as the special guest, and for the calibre of guests expected at that evening’s occasion, including the mayor, senators and captains of conglomerates, amongst others, he needed to be dressed in top form.

To cut the story short, he refused to pay what he termed ’that outrageous price’ for the Tom Ford suit and that was how we ended up at Steinmart, where he agreed to pay a more acceptable price of $220, tax inclusive, for a basic men’s suit, which he was happy to wear to that evening’s event.

What struck me was that as we were on the way to the airport to see him off for his return flight back to Nigeria, he reached for his pocket where he brought out an envelope of crisp hundred dollar bills. The amount in the envelope was $3,800.
He said ‘Anyanwu, this is the balance of the money I would have paid for the ‘Ford’ suit. If the label on the suit was ‘Peter Obi’, I am wondering if anybody in America will pay that amount for it. I have deducted the amount we paid for that suit we eventually bought. Please use this balance for your Charity foundation to help those in actual need. I trust you will do so’. We all laughed heartily. Vintage Peter Obi!

The eventual beneficiaries of that largese were Madam Theresa Agbo, a yam seller who became penniless and displaced when her yam shed was gutted by fire; Callistus Egbe, who was bedridden due to illness, and needed help with the school fees of his young children; and the Mgbemena family of six, who were thrown out of their one room accommodation (which we subsequently doubled to two rooms) because their breadwinner fell upon hard times and could no longer afford the rent.

In life, you either live by your creed or you desecrate the mould by which the Almighty created you. Any progressive nation measures an individual by his values, not his vaults.
If this way of life is what is derided as ‘stinginess’ on the part of Peter Obi, then we all need to adopt this mould for a more sustainable and more humane environment.

. Their relationship wasn’t built on “a Man is the one to provide.” It was spiced with mutual investment. They turned giving into a game. And both of them were winning.

That same evening, I picked up my phone and called the girl I was dating at the time:

"I have an idea," I said. "Let's play a game. Every month, we surprise each other with a gift… no matter how small.”


There was a brief pause on her end.

Then she replied with a clear enthusiasm in her voice: “Game on.”

And that completely rewired how i see female interest forever. That quick, excited “Game on” told me everything I needed to know… this girl genuinely liked me.

But if she had hesitated, made excuses, or tried to laugh it off? That would have been the clearest red flag that tells me she has no real interest in me.

The issue is not that Pastor Adeboye expressed an opinion. The issue is that many Nigerians remember a time when he was far more vocal about the failures of previous governments. That is why his recent comments have attracted scrutiny.
You cannot build a reputation for speaking truth to power and then appear to lower the standard when your preferred leader is in office. Consistency is the foundation of moral authority.

When previous administrations struggled with insecurity, corruption, fuel scarcity, or economic hardship, Pastor Adeboye did not hesitate to call for urgent action and national repentance. Today, insecurity has become even more widespread, kidnappings have reached communities once considered safe, millions are battling unprecedented economic hardship, yet his public criticism appears noticeably restrained. Nigerians have every right to ask why.

Saying that the President only needs to give orders ignores the very essence of leadership. A Commander in Chief is not judged by the orders he gives but by the outcomes those orders produce. If insecurity continues to worsen, then leadership must be held accountable. That principle applied under previous governments and it must apply now.

It is ironic that some people who once applauded Adeboye for challenging those in power are now asking Nigerians not to question him. Respect for a pastor does not require silence in the face of apparent double standards. Public figures who comment on national issues should expect their past statements to be measured against their present ones.

Reducing every criticism to "Obidients are attacking him" is also misleading. Many of those questioning Pastor Adeboye are not doing so because of Peter Obi. They are doing so because they expect consistency from someone who has long been regarded as a moral voice in Nigeria.
This is not about tribe. It is not about religion. It is about credibility. If the standards used to judge former presidents are abandoned when the current president is involved, then people are justified in pointing out the inconsistency.

Nobody is above criticism, whether politician or pastor. The same courage required to speak against yesterday's government should exist today. Otherwise, people will inevitably conclude that the message changes depending on who occupies Aso Rock.
That is the real issue. Not ethnicity. Not political affiliation. Consistency.
