Crime / Copyright Infringement by fisfat(m): 9:39am On Mar 16, 2019

Day after day, the value placed on intellectual property like movies, books, music and software wanes. This is due to the abundance of piracy and a huge lack of regard to the factor of copyright on intellectual property.
According to Wikipedia, “Copyright is a legal right, existing in many countries, which grants the creator of an original work exclusive rights to determine whether, and under what conditions, this original work may be used by others”. Copyright is denoted with the logo © which means that any book, music, movie, audio, software or any other intellectual property of any kind which has this logo written/inscribed on them has a copyright.

Essentially, such works as described above should not be gotten for free or be taken without the owner's express grant. Sadly, too many disregard the obvious sign of copyright and go on to acquire intellectual property of other people without paying a dime. This is called an infringement of intellectual property, Wikipedia explained it well: “Copyright infringement (colloquially referred to as piracy) is the use of works protected by copyright law without permission, infringing certain exclusive rights granted to the copyright holder, such as the right to reproduce, distribute, display or perform the protected work, or to make derivative works”.

A survey carried out in Nigeria in 2016 revealed that people who infringed on copyright of intellectual property ended up making more money than the original owners. Not only in this African country, the evil is perpetuated in every part of the world. People download songs they did not pay for, all thanks to some sites that stole the song to make it free for other people. People go to bookshops and in pretence of looking at the book, they scan the book and leave without buying it.
Copyrighting has failed to prevent this evil as its scope of hunting down perpetuators is not wide enough to accommodate the various forms it is being done. Too many people are far away in the comfort of their rooms stealing media files off the internet; while the copyright laws may tame the owners of the website, it may never reach that person and other people who took it. Uncaught and undeterred, they continue the distribution in their abode.

Copyright infringement is a crime on all fronts: morally and legally. While there are very few laws bothering on infringement in many countries, the outright wrong being done is morally forbidden. It is unfair to go on the web to steal the product of many people's sweat, hard earned money, efforts and ideas. It is unconscientious to perpetuate such acts of deliberately avoiding payment for something that should be paid for.

The effect of copyright infringement on the owners of intellectual property is massive and it is advised that people should deter from such evil. Producing an average ntellectual property costs a fortune, producing a good one costs even more. Movies, for example are stolen off the internet every now and then. While some owners feel the impact a little, some feel it greatly. I'm sure if more people stole Kevin Hart's Jumanji 2 that cost him about 90,000,000 US Dollars to produce, he would feel the effect drastically. Many people in the industry are suffering from depression today because of how things turned out despite it being copyrighted.

Gone are the times when copyrighting a work secured it from any types of theft, nowadays, in the face of rapid technological advancement, copyrighting has lost its grip on security of properties. Copyrighting intellectual property to protect it from theft has become a myth overnight.
It must be emphasized that copyright infringement did not start today. As with many bad things, it is an old habit that dies hard. Many kids grew up infringing on the efforts of other people; copying assignments in school, cheating in exam halls by looking at the next person's work without asking them, fleshing up an idea another person shared and claiming it like it's theirs, peeping through a window to see a movie in another person's house and so on.. These little habits accumulated to form the crime of copyright infringement and such acts should be curbed.
Sadly, with the internet showing the way to the bad act and the law's inadequate provisions, copyright infringement might take too long a time to die.
However, while the battle against it continues, the public should be educated more about the effects of their actions on the owners. Also, owners of intellectual property should tighten their grip on security such that stealing their dear property will be almost impossible.
Finally, the public should be taught to identify a copyrighted property and be advised to dissuade from infringing on them.
Hopefully, one day soon, the evil of copyright infringement will be tamed.

and some of them are spoiling the name of Nigeria out there, not trying to discredit Igbos, no doubt they work hard but I've just stated the obvious truth, most of them are spoiling our name outside of Nigeria..

I've been to almost 20 out of the 53 countries in Africa, in each country when I introduce myself as a Nigerian there will be one person to tell me a story about a Nigerian guy around that neighborhood that has done something bad and the names that pops up are names from the East.
it's sad.

I had this mindset and I still have it:

I feel each one of them is trying to extort you.

lipsrsealed lipsrsealed lipsrsealed What a shiiit hole country we have, the show is called Big brother Nigeria but everything is South African from beginning to the end . What a better way to promote their tourism and they knew the generation to target, the young Nigerians . Try to recreate big brother Ghana or big brother Republic of Benin but all production based in Nigeria as see if anyone will tuned in to watch in those countries. Nigerians are just nuts for anything foreign !

There was a reason why the show is being hosted in South Africa. This is a snip of an interview held with Eyo bassey. Owner of payporte.

There was a backlash on Payporte for taking the contestants to faraway South Africa. Why wasn’t the house created in Nigeria?

When we were told that the show will be staged in South Africa, we initially felt the way most Nigerians felt. So we took a tour to South Africa and on getting there, we found out that there was a history with Big Brother Naija there. Ten years ago when Big Brother was hosted in Nigeria, there’s was a power outage for four hours and as Payporte, we were not going to be associated with that. The English Premier League we watch – which is one of the biggest contents – is played in England and we watch it here. The world is now a global village, what is most important is that content is beamed to viewers and quality content for that matter. Nigerians deserve the best and Payporte went out for the best.

One thing that Nigerians did not understand is the entire production was by Nigerians. Every equipment and gadget in the house was from Nigeria. The brooms used to sweep were from Nigeria and Payporte was involved in providing most of these things. The show was taken to South Africa for logistical reasons but that does not take away from the fact that it was a Nigerian show sponsored fully by a Nigerian company. By the way, this is the first time it would be sponsored by a Nigerian company.

Does Payporte plan to sponsor the next Big Brother Naija or build a Big Brother house in Nigeria?

We can build a house if we are able to get all the logistics right. The problem is not the house; we have finer houses in Nigeria. From the house where Big Brother was beamed, there’s an eight terabytes of fibre cable that carries data almost real-time from where the show is happening to Mnet office. We don’t have anyone that has invested in content infrastructure in Nigeria. People that have invested in content in Nigeria have studios at the most, then they bring an OB van and try to beam. But where we are, we have an eight-terabyte capacity with a fail over on microwave that beams this signal to over 51 countries. This is a wake-up call for content providers who are looking at investing in content infrastructure. Payporte is an e-commerce store, we can’t go ahead to invest in content infrastructure. On sponsoring the next Big Brother, of course, Payporte will bring Big Brother to Nigerians. We are going to bring it back better and bigger in association with our other partners, Multichoice and DSTV.

Uyo, capital of Akwa Ibom is renowned for her serenity, safety, hospitality, well-paved roads and arguably the best of delicious delicacies. A city of slightly over half a million residents with her international airport one hour drive from the city centre. She has enough to wow her visitors. Here are four interesting places to visit in Uyo.

Discovery Park

Located along Udo Umana Street. With the popular market – Akpan Andem – and the Township Stadium in propinquity. It is a nature themed park that is characterised by scenic views of the old stadium and the surrounding environment. Revellers can indulge themselves in the delicacies available in the park while melodious songs are played by the audio team. Delicacies include but not limited to: Isi-ewu, Nkwobi (made using cow’s leg and tail), Dog meat (popularly called 404), chicken prepared in different forms – deliciously, goat meat pepper soup, barbecue fish and lots more. Akwa Ibom is known for her array of mouth-watering soups ranging from Afang to Editan to Afia Efere (White soup) to Atama to Edika Ikong and others. Albeit, not a soup, the legendary Ekpang Nkuwo is available. Discover them at Discovery!

Ibom Tropicana Centre

Situated along Udo Udoma Way in Uyo. This is the number one entertainment centre in the state. Modelled after Sun City in South Africa with Silverbird Cinemas as the anchor tenant. Movie tickets range from N1, 000 – 1,500. With students in tertiary institutions and corps’ members paying 20% less the fee (Note: Have a form of identification). Another notable tenant is Silver Lounge Restaurant, with her rich array of meals – continental and African. This is an environment lovers will find romantic. Additionally, the centre provides visitors with activities such as bike riding, electronic games, snooker etc. to immerse themselves in.

Museum of Arts and Culture

For arts and culture lovers, this is one place to visit. Established in 1989, this is a centre of archival items, ethnographic collections and artifacts of the state’s history. It is also a centre for museum education and sales of memorabilia. It is situated along Udo Udoma Way.

Playground

Located at 36, Dominic Etuk Avenue (formerly known as Brooks Street). Playground which is similar to Discovery Park but more popular offers a serene place for friends, associates and family to unwind after the hustle and bustle of life. With more than 15 aesthetically designed bars that offer the best of delicacies, and an open space wide as an Olympic size football stadium, it can host events of relative attendance. With a standby musical band and avenues for sporting activities, entertainment never ceases at Playground.1111-300x169 Interesting Places to Visit In Uyo, Akwa Ibom StateTour Her Culinary Sites

Tour Her Culinary Sites

The people of the state are renowned for their exceptional culinary skills, which have produced some of Nigeria’s best delicacies. The home of Afang. Atama, Edika Ikong, Editan, Afia efere soups, and not forgetting Ekpang Nkukwo. Home to some of Nigeria’s well-paved roads, I implore you to tour the city. Visit the popular Mummy J; Ola’s Place (for your Yoruba meals); Kilimanjaro (both continental and local); Food Affairs, and the various culinary outfits by the Ibibios. People say Edo girls fly at day time but just ignore them.

Edo people are generally easygoing people. They don't make trouble, don't find trouble, don't give trouble, unambitious and have not contributed anything meaningful to the growth and development of the country tongue tongue

People also claim the headquarters of witchcraft is in Edoland (first class azeh ) and their women often knock off their wealthy husbands in order to inherit his riches. Whether this is true or not, I am in no position to confirm or refute. Once again, IGNORE THEM. tongue cheesy

They do not demand for an arm and leg during the marriage processes, and unlike certain parts of Nigeria, you will not need to break your bank to marry one of theirs. cheesy You will find that they will make most agreeable in-laws. grin

However, If you are a religious person, pray to God for guidance before settling down with your partner because love, good and evil does not know race, ethnicity or gender. With God, you can never go wrong
