ping2ping please let me make a few clarifications: 1. There is nothing - please read - nothing like a "V6 engine is problematic". All engines are problematic if you give them to automechanics that are incompetent! Ultimately, all engines (not only V6) become expensive to maintain when you don't follow manufacturers' scheduled and general maintenance. V6 engine is just a 4 cylinder engine with additional 2 cylinders to provide additional power. Have you ever thought of this: With the exception of RAV4 and CRV, all common brands of SUVs (called jeep in Nigerian parlance) come with the minimum of V6 engines. How do the owners cope with the so-called problematic V6 in them? 2. Not all cars feel underpowered when loaded up to the rated load capacity. At the maximum of 6 adult passengers and a few luggage, my Odyssey 2.2ltr engine sound dropped to a lower pitch and i also needed to depress the accelerator a little more to maintain the same speed. I felt this the more when driving uphill. I gave out the Odyssey and got an 02 Sienna on this forum which has a 3.0ltr engine. I can boast that it carries more load effortlessly. The difference is in the engine power brother, it is V6, and of course, the Sienna is powerful but fuel thirsty. The fuel tank is rated 20.9gallons (80ltrs) but I fill it with N9,000. Meanwhile, I filled the Odyssey with N6,000 and it actually lasted me longer than what the Sienna does. 3. Please note that the model of the Odyssey you are referring to above runs from 1995 through 1998. It is the same model that shares similar mechanical parts with the same year Honda Accord (popularly known as Academy and not the baby boy). The bigger model of the Odyssey that has gear box issues started in 1999. I cannot say much about its mechanical similarity with the Babyboy's only that I also observed that a lot of people complain about the failure of Babyboys (Honda Accord 1998/99-2002) automatic gear. 4. The Mazda MPV you comes with the V6 for the US model which you are more likely to get if you eventually go for it. The 1999 -2002 model comes with 2.5ltr V6 while later models come with standard 3.0ltr V6. If you are willing to trade off power for fuel economy and the van will only be fully loaded occasionally, then go for the Odyssey. Other factor coming into play is your budget which in which case you can still get a good bargain for N900K for a well maintained Odyssey unlike the MPV that costs a few hundreds more. Hope this suffices! |
Everyone is criticizing the OP and his mechanic for putting a very old Camry engine in an AWD SUV. Nobody has ever criticized the British manufacturer for designing such a poor engine that doesn't last in the Freelander. Here is a 1986 Japanese engine in the hands of the uneducated Nigerian mechanic. Yet we run both down! Please give kudos to those who deserve it. |

@OP Honda Odyssey/Isuzu Shuttle: The US version of this vehicle was actually produced as a joint development between Isuzu and Honda in Japan and shipped to the US and it spanned 1995 - 1998 and not up to year 2000, well maybe the European models. It was later replaced by the popular bigger Odyssey which is the model with transmission issues. I used the vehicle for 3 years before I gave it out, strong and durable. Got it at 175K miles and racked up additional 60k in the 3 years I used it. Almost all mechanical parts are the same as the Honda Accord of the same model year - engine and transmission wise! Parts are cheap and affordable. Complete 2.2ltr engine goes for N50K. Boot is quite spacious and back seat folds flat into the floor creating additional space. 9ja mechanics handle it very well and fuel economy is good given the fact its a 4 plugs. Tranny issue? - Never had a major issue. I drained the ATF yearly and once changed a speed sensor for N5k. Transmission is all auto. Got mine from Cotonou for N870K with full duty paid. It sells for ~N1M locally. Downside: It feels underpowered when all seats are occupied by adults. You also hear the exhaust touching the ground when it is fully loaded despite the good shocks that came with it. Also, if you are getting one, go for the one that has AC vents on the roof for rear passengers. Mazda MPV: This MPV is 6 Cylinder so I expect power to be adequate and also take a little more fuel compared to the Shuttle/Odyssey. For me, the dashboard of the MPV is a selling point over the odyssey which is a little boring. Rear doors are sliding so it is good for children and the rear windows can be rolled down. I haven't used it before but they've been great comments on the availability and cost of maintenance and parts. I wish I could confirm that the Tranny is actually 20K!!! I have come acroos quite a number advertised for between N1.1 and N1.3M. Volkswagen Sharan/Ford Galaxy: Same goes for these two MPVs. Sharan is European while Galaxy sold in the US. They share basically the same engine and other mechanical parts. Fuel economy is great on the 4 cylinder. Obviously, transporters use the 2.8l VR6 6 cylinder version. The thing is the 9ja shrewd transporters wouldnt use them if its not good. For me, the sharply raked nose that shows lack of creativity and the its general association with commercial purpose here in Nigeria is the minus. but generally, it is a good car. In terms of cost, you should get a good one for between N750~N850K. I haven't seen one with an automatic transmission really though they may exist. Toyota Picnic: This is about the most expensive old 4 cylinder MPV I have ever come across in Nigeria. It is a typical European vehicle - not too spacious but fuel economical. Maintenance cost is also good and its a 4 cylinder. Like any other vehicle, if you carry out scheduled maintenance and regular checks, almost any car will serve you well. You can find the Picnic as both manual and auto. The auto goes for about N1.35M - That will surely get me at least a CE option of 2001 Toyota Sienna which gives me more space and engine power of course with fuel economy trade off. My opinion, Picnic is good but is it really worth the cost considering cheaper alternatives? A question for you: Any particular reason why you want MPVs whose rear glass must roll down? |
Femi, please how much do i need to clear a 2007 Mercedes Benz E350 on Grimaldi RORO? |
This thread is too touching for me and drove me emotional. I guess I am still lucky to have a mother! I sympathize with everyone on this thread and at the same time thanks for making me appreciate my mother more and more. @Cherry24: Thanks for being there for your siblings. |
Hi, A few people are interested in FCT. Can you please forward more pictures of this die hard German mistake to my box: engine, interior, front and back tyres and suspensions. I believe they are spring/spring? Also let me know how many thousands of miles it has moved and your final rock bottom price at which if N1 is removed further you wouldn't accept! Need to have some details before inspection. Send to ofismails@yahoo.com |
Oga, please help me with this VIN. Thanks. 2HNYD18614H516465 |
I directed someone to this link but he got confused. First the title reads "sold" while it appears it is still available. How many people are advertising the same vehicle? Is Sammy Young the same as Mr. Bans in the link below? https://www.nairaland.com/1226182/full-option-lr3..2007-model-3.150.08077984057#14764696 A clarification and proper title will be in order. |
Please send me the VIN of this car. ofismails@yahoo.com I have someone who is very interested. |
Hi Jarus, A friend has an issue at hand as we speak. Your urgent advice will be appreciated. My friend is into frozen foods business of which year 2012 turnover is about Eight Million naira. Though the business is registered as an enterprise (not a company), he uses his personal account for business transactions as he is yet to open an accountfor the business. Actually, the business name registration was done not too long ago. Three weeks ago, he received a letter from FIRS to pay the sum of N75 Million being the accumulated tax covering a period that the business had not even been thought of. Mind you the letter was addressed to the actual business name which had just been registered. Now the man in charge of the tax office that sent the letter had persistently called my friend to come and 'settle the matter' with the sum of N60,000 like others did and there was no receipt issued whatsoever for the payment. My Questions: 1. How is tax calculated for businesses that are registered as an enterprise? Please bear in mind that the books of account are largely informal where they exist at all. They had actually requested in the letter that statements of accounts and other records be brought for correct calculation of tax arrears 2. Are sales of fish and other frozen food items taxable? Don't they come nder basic food items or Agric items which are exempted according to your earlier post? 3. Is it wise to report this station manager to his superior for fraudulent conversion of remittances in the name of 'settlement'? 4. Generally, how doyou think the issue should be approached? My friend had just received another letter stating that his business will be shutdown and the process of winding down would commence if a response is not received in 7 days! Thanks bro. |

EU do you have any clean 8 or 10 ten tyre refrigerated truck (cold room body)? |
This has also happened to me before with the Apple drink of the same 5 Alive in the former pack. I had taken a full cup of it while I was emptying the remaining for my sister. The shocker: Some black particles gushed out into her cup prompting us to rip open the container. Lo and behold, what we saw looked like a rotten leaf. We simply threw everything away and hoped the part of it that I consumed will have no effect on me. We did not bother to report as the burden of proof solely rested on us! |
Inspired you earned my trust and deserved my 'thank you'. Till date, I have only met you once in my life, I am not sure I can still recognise your face outside your office. And thanks bro for taking care of my driver he said you lodged him in an hotel. Someone asked to know if you usually go to the US to select these vehicles yourself! Catch my drift? |
cgift: Is there something like a scratch resistant paint for cars? This is really a menaceYes. Some paint have self-healing ability for scratches that are not really deep. Not sure if they sell such in 9ja. Learnt this is the factory paint for Infiniti FX. |

My response is more of the maintenance of 05 Accord than comparison with C Class. I presently drive an 05 Accord top of the range (i.e. V6 + Navigation). Men I love my car. The take off from stand still is just too superb. Unless you want to break your neck, the 3.0ltr engine gives you more than enough power that you need on our roads in Nigeria. Fuel economy was comparable to any good Japanese 4 cylinder car if you catch my drift. It does 570km in town and 750km on the express on my full tank of 72ltrs. My brother and I took turns many times to do long distance journey with it and it never disappointed one second. It's just a practical car. I averaged 20,000 miles/year on it. Infact, it hit the 100,000 miles mark last week. No transmission issues as reported with the earlier models. If there is anything I love, it's the very generous interior space as I am family man. I personnaly detest that big mid-ridge on the floor of the back seat of Merceds cars. Of course I know its typical of back wheel drive vehicles, just that it doesn't catch my fancy. The back seat of Benz cars, even the newer models, appear to be 2-seater to me. Maintenance wise, front brake pads of Accord cost me 5K in Abuja and lasts me more than 7000+ miles. The back brake pads cost far less. Oil change for my V6 is 1 Gallon + 1ltr of Mobil XHP + oil filter < or = N5,000 and I change it at 6000 miles. I've hard to regrind the discs which was delivered warped for 3k, recently changed the back hubs for 21k as i didn't like the noise from one of them. Had a progressive whining noise from the power steering pump, had to change the 'O' ring which I ordered from US for 85 cents as I could not get it from Abuja. Infact, my mech almost changed the entire pump for 30k were it not for some Accord forums that I visited online. I have never changed the plugs since I bought it, it ain't broken why fix it. Apologies if that touches some nerves. The booth lock release cable got damaged and I replaced it for 7k. A friend that wrecked his frontal changed the hood for 17k, hood shocks 6k, bumper 12k, right fender(?) 7k, pair of new head lights 14k. For me, it is safe to conclude that the 2005 Honda Accord will sure serve you well and digs no hole in your pocket though I cannot compare it to the C class. I only drove a 19 year old Benz 190 for 5 years and men, it was more of suffering than smiling. |
