2013-12-06 15:56
Abeokuta - Nigeria’s former president,Chief Olusegun Obasanjo, has described the late Nelson Madela as a man who raised the beacon of human struggle to lofty heights of nobility.

Obasanjo, who addressed journalists in his home in Abeokuta on Friday, said Mandela’s life was an example of what people should all aspire for.

"In all situations, he lived nobly and died in nobility. Let us bear in mind that we all have the opportunity to act nobly in whatever position we find ourselves," he added. He described Mandela's death as a monumental loss to all human races and called on all to emulate the life and times of the great leader.

"His demise is a loss to his family who will miss a caring patriarch; the people of South Africa who will miss a guide, Africa who will miss a role model and the world who will miss a leader.

"When we teach our children lessons for tomorrow, let us remember lessons Mandela gave the world in forgiveness and forbearance," Obasanjo said. Obasanjo, who eulogising Mandela, recalled the times when he was voted to become South-Africa's post-apartheid president.

"During the first non-racial democratic elections in 1994, I was on election observation assignment in South Africa and was there for his campaign and when he cast his vote. He was devoid of bitterness or anger against anybody except the hated apartheid system."

"He went on to win the election and more importantly led South Africa to the extent that the country was able to cast aside its apartheid legacy and take its place in comity of nations. Certain that his task was completed, Mandela modestly refused to seek re-election after his first term in office as his presidency elapsed," Obasango said.

"I still recall his pragmatic words when he said to me 'Olu, show me a place in the world where a man of 80 years is running the affairs of his country. This, to me, reflects an unequaled sense of modesty for a man who spent 27 of the prime years of his life in prison for a just cause."

"Yet he still kept a calm and peaceful disposition to those who took away his freedom for all those years of his life," he explained.

PoliticsASUU Strike Latest: Union Distributes Food Item And Cash To Members by fkaz(op): 12:57pm On Dec 05, 2013
The Ahmadu Bello University (ABU) chapter of the Academic Staff Union of Universities, ASUU, yesterday in Zaria received food and financial support to enable striking lecturers in the institution continue with the ongoing strike.
The chairman of the branch, Dr. Mohammed Kabir-Aliyu, who confirmed the development to newsmen in Kaduna Wednesday, said the offer would help the protesting members to survive the hardship accompanied by the non-payment of salaries.
Kabir-Aliyu noted that lecturers in the university have not earned their salaries since the strike commenced in the last four months.
Among items distributed to the lecturers were rice, semovita, vegetable oil and cash, ranging from N20, 000 to N50, 000.
He declared that they were not moved by the threats to sack them.
University teachers nationwide had embarked on strike since July 1 to force the Federal Government to honour an agreement it had with them since 2009.
It would be recalled that the Supervisory Minister of Education, Nyesom Wike, had last Thursday asked the striking lecturers to return to work on or before December 4 or face sack.
However, the resumption deadline was on Tuesday extended to December 9 to enable the striking teachers to honour Prof. Festus Iyayi, who died in an auto crash while on his way to attend ASUU NEC meeting in Kano.

PoliticsAdamu Ciroma Says Security Has Collapsed In North-east by fkaz(op): 7:16am On Dec 04, 2013
By Saharareporters, New York
After a long silence on issues bedeviling Northern Nigeria, Adamu Ciroma, the 79-year old Nigerian former Minister of Finance and ex-Governor of the Central Bank of Nigeria, yesterday broke his silence saying security has collapsed in the troubled North-East region of Nigeria.
The Yobe State-born politician, who chaired one of the sessions at the ongoing North-East Economic Summit holding in Gombe State, also told all state governors from the zone to wake up from slumber. He asked the governors to invite all categories of people, including those he described as “Boko Haram looking people,” to see the urgent need to overcome the current insecurity responsible for the backwardness of the region.
The summit commenced barely 24 hours after Boko Haram militants renewed their terrorist activities by launching a daring attack on military formations in fortified areas of Maiduguri, the Borno State capital, in the early hours of Monday.
“Security has collapsed and you cannot farm, trade, you cannot do anything without security,” said Mr. Ciroma. He added: “All of you here are already well-to-do people, because God has enabled you to go to school to become what you have become. But the fact is that without peace, no production is possible, no economic improvement is possible.”
Mr. Ciroma, who spoke in an emotional tone, disclosed that the governor of his home state shunned him. “At the beginning of this year, I sent a friend to talk to the governor of my state, and I advised him and I am repeating before all of you, Your Excellencies. I advised him that he should call a meeting of all the traditional institutions in the area. With the learned people and with the Boko Haram-looking people, everyone who matters, each governor should call them for a meeting in the North-East. And [you have to] point out that the situation has worsened and they need peace, if they need peace and want to see things [done] properly. If they want to see improvement in agriculture, then all of them must agree to cooperate to re-establish peace in the area. The traditional rulers, the malams, everybody, Boko Haram-looking people, all of them should cooperate and establish peace so that security and peace will begin. Up to now, I have not heard from him. So you governors here, you have not heard from me, because if my governor didn’t hear me, why should I think you will hear me?”
The septuagenarian challenged the governors to concentrate more on empowering young farmers in the rural areas who are most vulnerable to the ongoing atmosphere of insecurity rather than the current emphasis on assisting only graduates of universities and polytechnics

Am talking of political structure not economic structure, although you can't rule out kano state interms of wealth also. Atleast after 4-5 states in the south you have to call kano state as one of the wealthy state in nigeria. Politically kano and lagos are states with great influence, that can change the political structure of their neighbouring states unlike rivers

ACN was in control of Lagos state in 2011 and GEJ won the presidential elections there, trashing Ribadu badly.

PDP was in control of Kano state in 2011 and GEJ lost there.

Is Fashola or Tinubu going to thumb print for us? You should be more concerned about retaining Lagos State governorship in 2015 as it is going to very difficult for APC. If you don't realise yet that APC is in trouble in Lagos, then Goodluck to you.

If you think for one second that Amaechi will take anything away from GEJ 's support in Rivers, you need to have your head checked.

Former Military President Ibrahim BabangidaThe Federal Government’s threat to sack striking university lecturers unless they resume work by Wednesday will not solve the crisis, former Military President Ibrahim Babangida told Daily Trust yesterday.
Education Minister Nyesom Wike last week issued a seven-day ultimatum to members of the Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU) to end their four-month strike or lose their jobs.
ASUU leaders angrily responded, saying they would not be intimated into resuming work.
Babangida, who spoke exclusively to Daily Trust in Minna, said issuing threats was not an effective way of solving issues.
“Basically, I’ll say both Federal Government and ASUU should apply knowledge and tactfulness in resolving this issue. Issues are never settled by threat and you need to settle quarrel in a tactful way,” he said.
“For those of us who believein Islam, Allah (SWA) instructed his Prophet (PBUH) that if he wants to bring people into his religion, he should use his knowledge and tactics in talking to people.
“And I think this is what is supposed to happen between the Federal Government and ASUU. I am sure the members of ASUU are patriots; they have the interest of the students at heart because they too are parents.
“I am sure both of them can sit down together, talk as Nigerians, talk as patriots and as people who are concerned. Because at the end of the day, if that is not done, quarrelling and threat will not solve this problem. Apply knowledge and tactics in handling this problem.”
The Federal Government’s ultimatum came in the wake of a marathon meeting President Goodluck Jonathan held with ASUU leader early last month.
Following this, local ASUU chapters voted to end the strike, but the national executive of the union wrote a letter to the president setting out certain conditions for resuming work.
Those conditions include immediate provision of N200 billion grant for federal universities, payment of four-month salary arrears to lecturers, and review of the 2009 agreement in 2014.
Government said these demands were outrageous, and therefore issued the ultimatum for lectures to resume or lose their jobs.
‘PDP defections normal’
Babangida also spoke on the crisis in the ruling People’s Democratic Party (PDP) which led to the defection of five of its governors, saying this was normal in a democracy.
“What is happening is not the first time such a thing is happening to this country,” he said.
“If we go back to 1959 to 60s political parties were in turmoil, some were breaking away and others were forming another political parties. And as recent as during the second republic, political parties have broken.
“I think this is one of the good things about democracy. The constitution allows us to form our opinion, to have an opinion and to spread such opinion. I think to me these things are normal.”
He added: “We should learn to accept that this is the basic guaranteed right to accept the status quo or to decide. Once you accept that, it reduces the area of tension. It is my right to say no I don’t like this; it is also your right to say OK. You are entitled to your own opinion; I am entitled to my own opinion. He’s entitled to his own belief; I am entitled to my own belief. Once this common understanding is brought to the bear, then you have no problem.”
Reminded that the PDP crisis led to the defection of five of its governors, Babangida insisted that this was still normal in a democracy.
“I told you this is not new. Awolowo, Azikiwe, Waziri Ibrahim, it all happened to them and for that it is good for democracy. In our part we are building a democracy in which at the end of the day, sanity and common sense will prevail and Nigeria becomes the beneficiary.”.

FIVE Pentecostal bishops have been banned from officiating in any bishopric gathering in the Niger Delta.
A terse statement, issued yesterday by Pentecostal Bishops in the Niger Delta and signed by the acting National Secretary of the organisation, Bishop David Benedict, said the unnamed bishops committed a sacrilegious act when, in company of seven other clerics from the region, indulged in alleged disgraceful act “without minding their highly exalted position in Christendom”.
While commending the National President of Christian Association of Nigeria, CAN, Pastor Ayo Oritsejafor, and the South-south Chairman, Arch-Bishop God-dowell Avwormakpa, for suspending the bishops, lauded the CAN President for his effort to religious body in the country.
The group called for peace between Governor Chibuike Amaechi and President Goodluck Jonathan.
