The truth is that January 15, 1966 coup was a planned Igbo coup masterminded by Nnamdi Azikiwe, Orizu, Aguiyi Ironsi et al..
Their motive was to kill all other regional leaders and abolish the regional system of Government.

The July 1966 Northern counter-coup crippled the Igbo plan to dominate Nigeria.. the Northerners slaughtered both soldiers and civilians of Igbo extraction to avenge death of Ahmadu Bello and Tafawa Balewa.
The Northern counater coup brought Yakubu Gowon to power (at barely 31yrs old), same coup freed Awolowo from prison and made him number 2 man in Nigeria.

In order to correct the wrongs of the Igbos.. Awolowo advised Gowon on additional States creation and recognition of the Eastern minorities which Igbos never believed could happen.
Alas their January coup failed, the Eastern minorities escaped Igbo slavery and now have their South South region today. Is God not wonderful?.
