Politics2023: Obi-datti Poised To Reposition, Rescue Nigeria To Avoid Catastrophe by floret23(op): 9:27pm On Sep 14, 2022
Road to 2023: Obi-Datti poised to reposition, rescue Nigeria to avoid catastrophe, say medics, other supporters
From David Onwuchekwa, Nnewi
Supporters of the Labour Party ((LP) presidential candidate for the 2023 election, Mr Peter Obi, under the umbrella of Doctors for Peter Obi (Docs4PO), have shut down Onitsha with solidarity songs in their demand for Obi as the next president of Nigeria.

The group, described as a global movement of Medical Practitioners for Obi and his running mate, Yusuf Baba-Ahmed Datti, joined other supporters in the commercial city of Onitsha in the mega march that lasted for hours.

The march qualified by residents as the mother of all marches shook the entire city as the Medical Practitioners in Anambra State and other support groups who converged in Onitsha for the rally vehemently expressed their desire and readiness for a new Nigeria made possible by Obi-Datti come 2023.

The Coordinator of the Docs4PO movement (Doctors for Good Governance), Anambra State, who is also the South East Zonal Director, Docs4PO, Dr Henry Eze, insisted that Nigeria is in dire need of good governance to rescue and reposition the nation to avoid what he called looming catastrophe cutting across the entire country and in all spheres of life.

He noted that Nigeria is on the verge of collapse, adding that everybody should be “OBIdient and Yusful” to rescue the country.

He disclosed that there had been massive mobilization by Medical Doctors in Anambra State, South East geopolitical zone, and beyond.

“We have been mobilizing support for Peter Obi and his running mate, Datti Baba-Ahmed. Nigeria has suffered enough decadence over the years in every sphere of life. Nigeria has experienced huge destructions, including the destruction of lives and property, naira devaluation and a whole lot of things with their negative consequences. We want a positive change.

“This is the time to act, this is the time to do the right things to bring good governance to this nation.

“This mega march on the streets of Onitsha, where Mr Peter Obi resides, has seen teeming crowds of supporters who come out marching on the major streets and roads in very enthusiastic blasts and chants, cheering up and joining the participants, all for Peter Obi. It is indeed a blast and a bang.

“Commercial activities and vehicular movements have slowed down greatly as the mega march proceeds peacefully. It’s a huge success.

“Nigeria truly and earnestly deserves Mr Peter Obi as its next president, and we are strategizing by every legitimate means to ensure he is elected, ” he declared.

Dr Eze disclosed that Doctors for Peter Obi both in Nigeria and Diaspora had assisted in Permanent Voters Cards (PVCs) registrations and had done free medical outreaches in many States and Local Government Areas in Nigeria.

He also said that the group was still conducting free medical outreaches and had organized and participated in million-man-marches for Obi and Datti in different parts of Nigeria and was still doing so, saying that the group never gave “shishi” to anybody for support.

“All marches and free medical outreaches our group has organized and participated in so far were through our personal efforts,” he disclosed.

He explained that the group financed the movement by itself because of the interest it has in Obi becoming the president of Nigeria.

Dr Eze further described Obi as a capable, credible, well-educated, and promising young presidential candidate full of vigour and great visions, free from criminal and corruption charges; a man of integrity and a humble trailblazer with notable and verifiable achievements.

He noted that Obi’s antecedents were not in doubt which he assured that anybody could verify.

Politics2023 Pre-campaign Poll Puts Peter Obi In 87.9% Lead; Tinubu, 8.5%; Atiku, 1.8% by floret23(op): 6:49pm On Sep 14, 2022
LAGOS, Nigeria, 12th September 2022 -/African Media Agency (AMA)
Labour Party presidential candidate in the Nigeria’s 2023 election, Mr. Peter Obi, has scored 87.9 per cent in a pre 2023 campaigns opinion poll organised by Prime Business Africa, an independent Africa-focused multimedia news and analysis platform.

The result of the two-month opinion poll came as the stage was set for the 2023 general election campaigns which begins in two weeks’ time.

Prime Business Africa conducted the poll to ascertain the opinion of Nigerians on presidential candidates, posing the question “Who Would You Vote as Nigeria’s President If The 2023 Election Were To Take Place Today?”

The online opinion poll started in July and ended today, September 11, 2022. It listed major presidential candidates for the 2023 elections – Bola Ahmed Tinubu of the All Progressives Congress (APC), Atiku Abubakar of the People’s Democratic Party (PDP), Peter Obi of the Labour Party, Rabiu Musa Kwankwaso of the New Nigeria Peoples Party (NNPP), and Adewole Adebayo of the Social Democratic Party (SDP). ‘Others,’ and ‘None’ were also listed in the voting options.

A total of 1,487 vote submissions were recorded during the poll, which allowed only one vote per person.

Obi scored a total of 1,307 votes (87.9 per cent), Tinubu had 126 votes (8.5 per cent), Atiku got 27 votes (1.8 per cent), while those who voted for Kwankwaso were five (0.3 per cent) in the pre-campaigns survey.

Data obtained from the result of the survey indicate that Adebayo of SDP had zero votes.

The option listed as ‘Others’ recorded eight votes, representing 0.5 per cent of the total vote submissions. However, 14 persons, representing 0.9 per cent of the total votes cast, chose the option of ‘None’, meaning that they are not interested in having any of the presidential candidates listed in the poll options.

The survey was to gauge the preferences of the digital media-savvy electorate as the campaign period approaches.

The three-phase polling for the 2023 presidential elections will see the second poll begin shortly after the kick-off of campaigns and end with a third category shortly before the elections take place.

This means that there will be two other surveys before the elections to determine the extent which the campaign messages and the candidates’ messaging techniques would have had on the enlightened members of the 2023 electorate who use the digital media.

Ms Loveth Ugwu, the Executive Assistant (EA) to the publisher, said that Prime Business Africa as a responsible and independent newspaper is keen on playing its watchdog role and setting the right agenda for participatory democracy and good governance in Africa.

“Our CEO and Publisher is a thorough-bred professional committed to the socio-economic development of the continent and his mandate to all of us at Newstide Publications Limited, is to place the fear of God, patriotism and common good above all. This mandate we must continue to keep,” Ms Ugwu said.

No Going Back On Opposition To Muslim-Muslim Ticket — Forum of Northern Christians

By Dapo Akinrefon & Luminous Jannamike, ABUJA

Opposition against the Muslim-Muslim ticket of the All Progressives Congress, APC, yesterday, grew as the Forum of Northern Christians reiterated its position on the same-faith ticket, saying it would not back down.

The forum is headed by the former Speaker of the House of Representatives, Mr. Yakubu Dogara.

But a top APC leader tackled Dogara, describing him as a fifth columnist.

Bola Tinubu, a Muslim emerged as the presidential candidate of the APC for the 2023 elections, while former governor of Borno State, Kashim Shettima, emerged as his running mate.

Muslim-Muslim ticket is deceit, we need experienced leader — Gumi

This came on a day Governor of Delta State and Vice Presidential candidate of the Peoples Democratic Party, PDP, Dr. Ifeanyi Okowa, yesterday, took a swipe at Bola Tinubu, over the controversy that has trailed the party’s Muslim-Muslim ticket.

Our position on same-faith ticket stands Dogara, however, said it will meet with all the presidential candidates, across party lines and come up with its preferred choice.

Dogara met behind closed doors with Christian leaders from the 19 Northern states and the Federal Capital Territory, FCT, in Abuja in continuation of their consultations ahead of the 2023 general elections.

It was gathered that aside the former speaker, others in attendance include former Secretary to the Government of the Federation, SGF, Mr Babachir Lawal; an APC Senator from Adamawa State, Elisha Abbo; former Kogi State Deputy Governor, Simon Achuba and all state chairmen of the Christian Association of Nigeria, CAN, from the 19 Northern states and the Federal Capital Territory.

Confirming the meeting in a tweet posted on his verified Twitter account, yesterday, Dogara wrote: “#NigeriaDecides2023: The fight for justice continues. Today (yesterday), we held a consultative meeting with Christian leaders from the 19 Northern States and the FCT on the pan-Nigerian platform to adopt in 2023.”

The forum had recently convened a summit of Northern Christian Leaders in Abuja where they rejected the adoption of a Muslim-Muslim Presidential and Vice Presidential ticket by the ruling APC.

No going back on opposition to Muslim-Muslim ticket—CAN chairman

“We are saying it’s no going back on our stance against the Muslim-Muslim ticket of the APC.”

Asked which political party the Northern Christian leaders have decided to throw their weight behind, Hayab said: “We will meet with leading Christian politicians across party lines to consult with them before deciding on our next line of action.

“We will also wait for signals from the (CAN) national body. They will also point us on the way to go, but the Muslim-Muslim ticket is out of the equation.

“What we had expected from the APC was for them to call the Church together and explain themselves rather than hiring impostors to impersonate genuine Christian leaders.”

Dogara, Lawal are fifth columnists — Party source

The source, who is familiar with the workings of the APC, said: “Dogara is a spent force. He was looking for the VP slot, as far as we are concerned, Dogara and Babachir Lawal just want to be noticed. Based on my understanding of how politics is played in the north, the likes of Dogara and Lawal are paperweight politicians as far as northern politics is concerned and also within the Christian community.

“During the last elections, what did they bring to the table from their various local governments? How many people can Babachir Lawal convince to vote for him in Adamawa State? How many people can Dogara convince to vote for others in Bauchi? Dogara is a minority in his state but in spite of that, Muslims supported him to become Speaker of the House of Representatives.

“They are fifth columnists as far as we are concerned. I see it as an attempt to demystify the myth around religious politics in Nigeria because an average Nigerian is not bothered about where you come from as long as you give him the basic needs. Look at the Vice President, how has his Vice Presidency benefitted any Christian in Nigeria?

The thing is staring them in the face that Bola Tinubu will win in 2023 and that is why they are looking for a way to thwart his victory.

I don’t believe in playing politics with religion, Okowa slams Tinubu, Obi

Meanwhile, Governor Okowa tackled Tinubu and the presidential candidate of the Labour Party, LP, Mr Peter Obi, over their recent utterances, saying he does not believe in playing politics with religion..

He said this during the Northern Christian Youth Assembly Summit in Abuja.

The governor also condemned the idea of cyber-bullying by supporters of other presidential candidates, which he said won’t stop him from speaking the truth about the situation in the country.

His words: “I do not believe in the Muslim-Muslim ticket. The reason is that there is a diversity when it comes to that. Therefore, sticking to one faith is not a good thing to do particularly in a troubled nation as we are in today. It’s almost like going on to having the presidential candidate pick his vice presidential candidate from the north and picking the Vice Presidential candidate also from the North.

“So, the only ticket that can work for our Nigeria is the ticket that is not trying to build itself to election victory to either the Muslim or Christian faith. “PDP will win the election because many people have keyed into this project. We are receiving decampees in droves.

“When we talk about the future is for the youths, yes it is from today but the truth is that our youths, particularly youths leaders, must be in a position to have a clear understanding so that they can guide others aright.”

Alleged cyber-bullying

On alleged cyber-bullying by supporters of other political parties, Okowa said: “I did not speak up my mind to look down on anybody. But the truth is that Nigeria is so divided. Nigeria is insecure. We are going to see bullying in cyberspace in our country. I think that everybody should have the space and time to be able to think and make comments without being bullied. We need to do critical thinking and that is why we are gathered here today.”

Lamenting the myriad challenges rocking the nation as Nigerians prepare to elect a new set of leaders in 2023, the Delta governor said: “The situation in this country is very bad. Sometimes we do not understand how bad it is. But I know that it is not irredeemable.

“The former Vice-President (Atiku) and I working with the party and working with Nigerians, believe that we can begin the rebuilding process but first we have to be able to rescue the nation by winning the elections.

“The economy is so bad, that the education and the health system are so bad. We are crying for devolution of power, and in all these challenges, you don’t bring somebody who wants to learn on the job. Because if you do, so you drop him on the seat, and he gets overwhelmed by the challenges on the ground. We don’t want to return to 2015.”

Why Atiku picked Okowa as running mate over Wike, others — Ayu

Also speaking, the National Chairman of the PDP, Senator Iyorchia Ayu, explained that the party’s presidential candidate, Alhaji Atiku Abubakar, picked Governor Okowa as his running mate above his Rivers counterpart, Nyesom Wike, and other nominees presented to him because of his (Okowa’s) humility and excellent performance in office.

Ayu said: “We looked around and we thought we have to give not just a vice president that will assist him (Atiku) but we did our homework to select a man, who is highly educated, very humble, and who has done very well as a governor in his home state.

“Okowa is the most qualified running mate. It is on his merit that he was selected by the party as the vice presidential candidate for Atiku Abubakar. I think Nigeria will be very lucky to have two such people who are committed to the development, who are detribalized and who believe in uniting this country.”

The PDP chairman, however, urged Nigerians to be wary of the APC, saying the ruling party performed poorly because they lacked a clear blueprint to turn around the fortunes of the country.

He said: “Even if APC were to come back tomorrow and give you a Muslim-Christian ticket, your fate will be worse because they have no programme.

“We have a president who is a Muslim, a vice president, who is a Christian, but they are not sensitive to the needs of the vast majority of the population.

“We have about 28 ministers in the Northern part of the country. I think only two Christians, the rest 26 Muslims, or that. Is that not insensitive? The vice president, per se, cannot do everything.

“Today, we are borrowing to pay salaries because of the mismanagement that has befallen this country. We have never had a situation where the security situation was so bad. I believe we can salvage this country. This country is drifting very dangerously. We can’t allow it to disintegrate.”

Urging Christian youths to take active part in the political activities leading to the 2023 elections, Ayu said: “What you are doing is a service to humanity. If you give them (Atiku and Okowa) your support and you mobilise the rest of the Nigerians to support, I believe we can salvage this country and make a difference.

“As a Christian, I want to say that we believe a lot in prayer, but over the years, we also know that, if you pray and you don’t work, I don’t think God will just come down and make things happen. You need to act. And so why do we pray? We try as much as possible to act in a way that God will help us.”
