As Benue State Governor, Samuel Ortom begins his second year in office, here are five issues that will lead to the success or failure of his administration.


1. Workers Salaries

Governor Samuel Ortom inherited a backlog of unpaid salaries from Ex-Governor Gabriel Suswam. Since then, the state government has struggled to update the salaries of workers which has been due to the dwindling federal revenue allocation to the state. Consequently, workers in the state are been owed 4-5 months salaries. The handling of this delicate facet of governance will go a long way to determine the success or failure of the government most especially because that Benue is considered to be a “civil servant” state.


2. Overbearing taxes

Heavy taxation of the public has been the cause grumbles in the state for the past year of the Ortom administration. The Governor has insisted that taxes should have a human face and said the state assembly is poised to review some of the taxes that are of concern to the people. This if done will go a long way to reestablish the goodwill once enjoyed by the Governor.


3. Projects

Though there have been no finished projects to commission after the first year, Governor Ortom has initiated a number of infrastructural projects especially rural roads. It is expected that the completion of these projects and more that will be initiated, will help to restore the confidence of the people in the government.


4. Media

It’s no news that Governor Ortom has been hemorrhaging in the media. Media assignments have been outsourced to social media personalities whose commentary and strategy has left much to be desired and have rather gathered enemies for the governor and government. This aspect is going to be key in the next one year and beyond for the Governor.


5. Agriculture

The people of the state would love to see the agricultural potential of the state fully explored. This will lead to generation of employment for youths, development and most importantly revenue generation that will ensure self-reliance and self-sustainability of the state. Action or inaction in this direction will determine the people’s perception about the government in the next year.

The Ogoni Kingdom(also known as the Ogonis) are one of the many indigenous peoples in the region of southeast Nigeria.

They number about 1.5 million people and live in a 404-square-mile (1,050 km2) homeland which they also refer to as Ogoni, or Ogoniland.

They share common oil-related environmental problems with the Ijaw peopleof Niger Delta.

The Ogoni rose to international attention after a massive public protest campaign against Shell Oil, led by the Movement for the Survival of the Ogoni People(MOSOP).

Human rights violations

The Ogoni people have been victims of human rights violations for many years. In 1956, four years before Nigerian Independence, Royal Dutch/Shell, in collaboration with the British government, found a commercially viable oil field on the Niger Delta and began oil production in 1958.

In a 15-year period from 1976 to 1991 there were reportedly 2,976 oil spills of about 2.1 million barrels of oil in Ogoniland, accounting for about 40% of the total oil spills of the Royal Dutch/Shell company worldwide.

In a 2011 assessment of over 200 locations in Ogoniland by the United Nations Environment Programme ( UNEP), they found that impacts of the 50 years of oil production in the region extended deeper than previously thought. Because of oil spills, oil flaring, and waste discharge, the alluvial soil of the Niger Delta is no longer viable for agricultural.

Furthermore, in many areas that seemed to be unaffected, groundwater was found to have high levels of hydrocarbons or were contaminated with benzene, a carcinogen, at 900 levels above WHO guidelines.

UNEP estimated that it could take up to 30 years to rehabilitate Ogoniland to its full potential and that the first five years of rehabilitation would require funding of about US$1 billion. In 2012, the Nigerian Minister of Petroleum Resources, Deizani Alison-Madueke, announced the establishment of the Hydrocarbon Pollution Restoration Project, which intends to follow the UNEP report suggestions of Ogoniland to prevent further degradation

Where should i even start from

Hello everybody,
Yesterday i carried out the taste as expected and the result was positive.

Actually i was really overwhelmed with series of thought on what next to do.

So I decided to ask my babe what she think we should do concerning the issue. To my surprise, she said am the one to figure out what should be done. Stressing that, marrying as a result of unintended pregnancy will be a bad precedent in her family...

Although, i never open up on any possibility of marrying her, because even if i do and my parents also accept the marriage, they won't be willing to dish out any dine in support.

As for me, i don't have money as it stand to be talking about going into an unprepared marriage.

The idea of her keeping the pregnancy and probably delivering the baby was dead on arrival.

She said that she will never accept the idea, pointing out that she can not bear the shame of carrying a pre-marital pregnancy before her relatives.

As it is now, D&C seemed to be the only solution to balance the equation between I and my babe.

Now she is pressuring me to find a way out to terminate the gestation before any of her family members suspect.

I have not decided on D&C yet.
