Politics › Adamu: APC's 28 Presidential Aspirants Undergoing Screening by Forzs(op): 4:58am On May 26, 2022 |
Presidential aspirants of the All Progressives Congress (APC) are currently being screened to determine their suitability, party chair Abdullahi Adamu said yesterday.
A panel made up of lawyers in the legal department is looking through the documents submitted by the aspirants as well as reports submitted on them by security agencies.
Senator Adamu, spoke during an interview session with Hausa-speaking media organisations at his office in Abuja.
The transcript of the interview was made available to reporters covering the APC.
There is controversy over the number of aspirants. While 25 contenders submitted forms, sources said 28 were undergoing screening.
The APC fixed screening of its aspirants for Monday, but put it off indefinitely on Sunday night. No reason was given.
But the Presidential primary will hold between Sunday and Monday at the Eagles Square in Abuja.
Adamu said: “The party has laid down its rules and regulations for the aspirants. We would scrutinize all of them based on our guidelines to be sure we pick the right candidate for the party.”
Asked if a consensus arrangement being contemplated by the party is similar to how he (Adamu) emerged as the chairman, the former Nasarawa governor, said: “There is no truth in what you said. The reason is the chairmanship seat is not the same as that of the tussle for the presidency of the country. You can’t even compare the two of them. That question does not arise.
“You can’t stop our party stalwart from contesting election or aspiring for the presidency. It is their right and we are happy for them. There is nothing wrong with anybody aspiring for the exalted seat of the presidency. It is God that decides who gets what. Once God makes up his mind and says this is who He wants that is what we are praying for.
“We have 28 aspirants for the presidential ticket and everybody knows that all of them cannot get the ticket. If it’s God’s wish they all can even be president of the country one after the other. Our is to ensure justice in the choice of who emerges candidate of the party. That does not mean we are perfect. But we pray we do the right thing.”
On zoning, the chairman said the party would decide this after screening the aspirants. “We have not produced our candidate for president yet. We have to screen the aspirants to know the way forward. We have aspirants from across the country in the race. We will make the decision when we get there.” https://thenationonlineng.net/apcs-28-presidential-aspirants-undergoing-screening-says-adamu/

Politics › APC Aspirants May Opt For Consensus As Buhari Meets Osinbajo, Tinubu, Amaechi by Forzs(op): 5:15am On May 22, 2022 |
All the presidential aspirants in the All Progressives Congress, except a former Lagos State governor, Asiwaju Bola Tinubu, are open to the idea of the candidate of the party emerging through consensus, Sunday PUNCH can confirm.
The consensus method will entail the President, Major General Muhammadu Buhari (retd.), anointing one of the aspirants, while the others simply step down for him as was done during the March 26 national convention of the APC, which produced Senator Abdullahi Adamu as the chairman.
It was gathered that all the governors on the platform of the ruling party had also adopted the method at the state level.
However, based on the Electoral Act, any aspirant who agrees to step down must do so in writing. Anything short of this will make the consensus option impossible.
In a bid to force the consensus method, the APC had introduced a controversial section in its forms for aspirants to sign that they would step down. However, Sunday PUNCH learnt that this was rejected by the aspirants.
Some major aspirants have begun reaching out to the less popular ones with a view to making them to step down with promises that money used in purchasing forms will be refunded or promises of they will be given juicy appointments.
Sunday PUNCH also learnt that the President would this week meet with the aspirants with a view to reducing the number of presidential hopefuls and also ensuring that all of them pledge to accept the outcome of the primary as was done during the APC presidential primary in 2014.
“The President will meet with the aspirants a few days to the primary with a view to ensuring that there is unity and harmony. He will also meet with the governors separately. The date is not fixed yet, but it should be this week if INEC doesn’t extend the deadline for the primary as we are all hoping,” said an APC chieftain who wished to remain anonymous.
“The President has a candidate. How to present the idea to the likes of Tinubu will be the challenge,” he added.
Buhari’s most senior spokesman, Mr Femi Adesina, had said last week that the President indeed had a preferred candidate.
He stated, “In a previous interview when the President was asked whether he had a favourite candidate, he answered yes; but he will not mention him because mischief may happen to that person.
“That shows you that the President himself is interested in the process and he has a preferred candidate; but whether he will impose his candidate is what you cannot determine at the moment.”
When contacted on the telephone, the Senior Special Assistant to the President on Media and Publicity, Garba Shehu, said he was not aware of any meeting the President would be having with the aspirants.
“I am not aware of any meeting as of now,” he said.
When Sunday PUNCH reached out to several aspirants, they said they were open to any form of primary adopted by the APC, including the consensus option.
The leader of the Progressives Lawyers for Osinbajo, Mr Kayode Ajulo, said the Vice-President was open to consensus. Ajulo said Osinbajo remained a party man and would accept whatever type of primary the party picks.
“We will not go against the wishes of the party. We will accept any form of primary,” Ajulo said.
A source close to a former governor of Imo State, Rochas Okorocha, stated that the aspirant would accept any form of primary.
“Senator Okorocha has said this publicly before. He will accept any form of primary,” the aide said.
The Deputy Senate Majority Leader, Senator Ajayi Boroffice, who is also in the presidential race, told Sunday PUNCH that he was open to any form of primary adopted by the party.
“I am open to any form of primary adopted by the party,” he said.
Also, the immediate past Minister of State for Education, Emeka Nwajiuba, told one of our correspondents that he was open to any mode of primary. He, however, added that he was not sure if all the aspirants would embrace it.
On his preferred method of primary, he said, “Anyone the party chooses to go after. Each one has its own advantages and disadvantages. If you bring 7,800 delegates together and you tell them to embrace an indirect primary, Abuja will be turned into a dollar bazaar, because people will try to get as many voting powers with lots of resources.
“But I know that the NWC is working towards the best mode of primary that will avoid rancour, loss of lives and disintegration.”
The Media Director of the Governor Yahaya Bello Campaign Organisation, Yemi Kolapo, said the Kogi State governor was open to any method adopted by the APC, adding that she was sure that Bello would emerge victorious.
“Any form of primary will be acceptable to us. We will pick the ticket anyhow,” Kolapo told Sunday PUNCH.
Earlier, the Cross River State Governor, Ben Ayade, told Channels Television that he would only accept consensus if it was done in the spirit of fairness.
He said, “In a scenario where the party creates very classical elucidations of the basis and selection criteria that I find completely adequate, I will have no objection.
“If the basis for narrowing down to somebody is the consensus basis and I don’t happen to be the one, I need to understand the selection criteria to explain how they arrived at Mr ‘A’ and not ‘B’. If I feel that is a fair process, of course, I will yield to the supremacy of the party.
“I am a team player and I don’t have any qualms with that. But I must see that it is fair and transparent. I know that capacity will be one of the key factors in consideration.”
Also, the Senate President, Ahmad Lawan, is open to any form of primary. The spokesman for Lawan’s campaign organisation, Iyke Ekeoma, who spoke with Sunday PUNCH, noted that while the party had not said it would come up with a consensus candidate, his principal would likely not fight the APC over its decision if such were the case.
Ekeoma said, “The party has not said that it’s coming up with a consensus candidate. It’s all rumour. Be that as it may, Senator Lawan as a party member will not deter with anything the party comes up with. He won’t fight it any more than toeing the line of the party.”
But Tinubu has constantly stated that he wants an open contest. While meeting delegates from Taraba State on May 9, he said, “My chances of winning the ticket are incredibly high and I am very confident. I am sure I can and I will win it. I want democracy. I am voting for democracy. One man, one vote!”
Also, the founder of the Tinubu Support Group, Mr James Faleke, told Sunday PUNCH that consensus was unknown to the APC constitution and as such, the former Lagos State governor would prefer an open contest.
“We are open to a fair contest. There is no such thing as consensus in the APC constitution,” Faleke noted.
Also, the South-West Agenda for Asiwaju 2023 said it would not accept any consensus, adding that it would be unfair to ask Tinubu to step down having toured the entire country seeking the support of delegates.
The National Secretary of SWAGA, Bosun Oladele, said, “No party adopts its presidential candidate by consensus except if he’s a serving President seeking a second term. In 2014, General Buhari emerged through indirect primaries. He defeated Atiku Abubakar, Rabiu Kwankwaso and Governor Rochas Okorocha in a fair contest, and that is why no one defected after the primary.
“In 2019, Buhari was chosen as the consensus candidate because he was the serving President. It is different this time. Let us all go to the field.”
Similarly, Tinubu’s campaign spokesman, Bayo Onanuga, said, “President Buhari has so far not taken any position and we believe that he will allow the primary to be held without interference. He once said during an interview that he had a candidate in mind but he never told the world who the person is, but people are trying to read his body language to know his preferred person. Buhari is a soldier, he will never show who his candidate is, but I know he will allow the primary to go ahead without interference.
“We believe that he will do that. Tinubu has been Buhari’s ally and we don’t expect him to work against Bola Tinubu, without whom he wouldn’t have been President in 2015. We don’t expect Buhari to pay back Tinubu in a bad coin, because the South-West was very pivotal to Buhari winning in 2015. So, he knows what role Tinubu played. The decision is left to the delegates to pick Buhari’s successor.
“We are going for delegates’ election and they will choose their representative. You can only get a consensus candidate based on the popularity of that candidate. If they want to do a consensus arrangement, it must be Bola Tinubu.”
On the possibility of Tinubu defecting to another party if he fails to emerge as the APC presidential candidate, Onanuga stated, “Has he ever defected? He has never defected. He is one man who has stayed in one political party and never changed positions. He transformed the AD (Alliance for Democracy) to the AC (Action Congress) and to the ACN (Action Congress of Nigeria) and later teamed up with another party to form the APC.
“He has been in the same party since 1999 and hasn’t left his political structure. He is not a man who jumps from one party to the other.”

“Amaechi is ready for any form of primary that the party picks. He is a party man,” he said.
We’ll reconcile aggrieved aspirants after primaries – APC
The National Working Committee of the APC said on Saturday there were plans to reconcile aggrieved aspirants after the presidential, governorship, senatorial and House of Representatives tickets are secured at the May 26 to 30 primaries.
A confident APC National Chairman, Senator Abdullahi Adamu, assured stakeholders that no grieving aspirant would leave the party after the primaries.
Adamu, who was represented by his Special Assistant, Prof Abdullahi Yau, stated this at a virtual town hall meeting organised by the Ward-to-ward Diaspora Network in collaboration with the APC Ward-to-ward Ambassadors on “Intra-party democracy for the emergence of best candidates.”
He said, “Directly I want to tell you that after the primaries, none of the contestants or aspirants will leave the party. You can see that unlike the other parties extending weight, in our party all our aspirants are calm. Everybody is going left and right, trying to win votes for themselves.”
According to him, all aspirants will be listened to by a high-powered committee if they have genuine complaints after the party’s primaries.
Yau stated, “They will listen to you and provide for your needs. In this way, we can carry everybody along in the party.
“I can assure you that this is the most interesting part; the number of people who are contesting and we are going to give everybody a level playing ground where you can exercise your right as Nigerians to contest.
“And at the end of the exercise, just like what happened at the national convention, you will see that everybody will be satisfied with whoever emerges from the primaries.”
Yau added, “Unless you have a process that is not well coordinated, a process that is marred by irregularities, that’s when people will be aggrieved and will want to leave the party. If you’re allowed to exercise your right and you think there’s fairness in what’s going on in the party and you lose, I don’t think you will want to leave the party.
“I assure you that even if we are going to have such a scenario, where we are going to have aggrieved members after the primaries, the chairman and stakeholders of the party will ensure they reconcile everybody after the primaries.”
Presidential aspirants in last-minute deals with delegates
Meanwhile, Tinubu has promised to replicate in Nigeria the developmental strides he put in place in Lagos State while he was governor.
He made the pledge at the Oba of Benin’s palace when he paid him homage as part of his consultation visit to delegates ahead of the presidential primary of the APC.
Tinubu, who said he was at the palace to seek the Benin monarch’s endorsement and prayers for his presidential ambition, said Lagos State was in a bad shape when he became governor, adding that he made the state a mega city before he left.
In his response, the Oba of Benin, Oba Ewuare II, said the Benin throne is non-partisan, but interested in who becomes the President, hence it would pray for a good leadership.
Osinbajo, on his part, held a closed door meeting with top members of the APC in Katsina State on Saturday inside the Presidential Banquet Hall of the Government House.
Governor Aminu Masari led other APC leaders in the state to the meeting, which also had in attendance delegates to the forthcoming presidential primary in Abuja as well as members of the state House of Assembly.
Amaechi said he was more experienced than Osinbajo, Tinubu and other aspirants vying to clinch the party’s presidential ticket. He stated this in an interview with journalists shortly after an interactive session with APC delegates in Gombe on Saturday.
He said, “I am more experienced than all of them; I have been governor, minister and Speaker, all for two terms. I have been a director-general of President Buhari’s campaign. I have toured the country; I took the President to the 36 states of the federation.
“I took my time to understand what is going on.”
In Akwa Ibom State, APC delegates pledged to vote for Amaechi during the party’s presidential primary.
At a meeting with the delegates and leaders of the APC in Uyo, a former Minister of Petroleum, Donald Etiebet, who spoke on behalf of the delegates, said Akwa Ibom would deliver 100 per cent votes to Amaechi at the primary election.
Ekiti State Governor, Dr Kayode Fayemi, said in Imo State on Friday that the nation must heal from past wounds, ensure inclusiveness and foster an administration that would give all citizens a sense of belonging.
According to a statement on Saturday by the Head of the Fayemi Campaign Organisation, Femi Ige, the governor said this during his visit to Imo State as part of consultation ahead of the forthcoming primaries of the APC.
The statement was titled, ‘Presidency: Imo delegates’ll look favourably to Fayemi, Uzodimma declares’.
In his remarks, the Imo State Governor, Senator Hope Uzodimma, described his Ekiti State counterpart as one of Nigeria’s finest brains and the best fit for the presidency.
Uzodimma declared that Imo State delegates would look favourably towards Fayemi in the forthcoming primary election.
Meanwhile, a Peoples Democratic Party presidential aspirant, Dr Bukola Saraki, met with delegates from Jigawa State on Saturday. He was received by the PDP Chairman in the state, Babandi Gumel. The aspirants also held a similar meeting with delegates from Enugu State led by the PDP Chairman, Augustine Nnamani, and later paid a courtesy visit to Governor Ifeanyi Ugwuanyi at the Government House, Enugu.
Similarly, Governor Aminu Tambuwal of Sokoto State, on Saturday, said if elected President in 2023, his administration would partner the Ndigbo to industrialise Nigeria.
Tambuwal said the partnership would focus more on skill acquisition programmes to engage Nigerians, especially the youth, irrespective of ethnic and religious background in order to douse agitations and other criminal activities across the country.
He stated this when he addressed Anambra State PDP delegates in Awka.
Our primaries begin today – PDP
Meanwhile, the PDP has said the primaries to nominate candidates for elective positions in the 2023 general elections will commence as scheduled today (Sunday).
The National Organising Secretary of the party, Umar Bature, said in a statement on Saturday, “For the avoidance of doubt, the state Houses of Assembly primaries to elect our state House of Assembly candidates will hold on Sunday, May 22, 2022; the House of Representatives’ primaries to elect our House of Representatives candidates will also hold on Sunday, May 22, 2022; while the senatorial primary to elect our senatorial candidates will hold on Monday, May 23, 2022.
“The National Working Committee has approved that in the event of unforeseen logistic situations, activities of the senatorial primary may extend to Tuesday, May 24, 2022.
“The NWC further clarifies that by virtue of Section 84( of the Electoral Act, 2022, those qualified and eligible to vote as delegates in the forthcoming primaries and national convention of our great party are the three ad hoc delegates per ward, elected at the ward congresses; and one national delegate per local government, elected at the local government area congresses. https://punchng.com/apc-aspirants-may-opt-for-consensus-as-buhari-meets-osinbajo-tinubu-amaechi-others/?amp

Politics › Why Osinbajo May Be President Buhari’s Choice by Forzs(op): 12:33pm On May 14, 2022*. Modified: 12:56pm On May 14, 2022 |
_”If you have achieved any level of success, then pour it into someone else. Success is not success without a successor” – TD Jakes On December 2, 2018, President Muhammadu Buhari made a profound statement during a meeting with Nigerians in Poland. It was the height of conspiracy about whether or not he was cloned and Nigerians in Diaspora felt the need to clear the air on the matter, so they asked him. Here’s how he responded: “A lot of people hoped that I was dead. Poor Vice President Yemi Osinbajo, even he had to deal with the rumours—Some people reached out to him to consider them to be his Vice President because they assumed I was dead. That embarrassed him a lot; we discussed it when he visited me while I was convalescing. I can assure you all that this is the real me. Later this month I will celebrate my 76th birthday. And I’m still going strong,” he said. Buhari’s response reverberated from Poland to Nigeria and indeed across the world. Loyalty had reached a new height and Prof. Osinbajo is the architect. Not many knew how loyal the deputy was to his master and how much he protected his interest. Those who had approached the then Acting President to become his Vice President were thoroughly ashamed of themselves. And this is one of many reasons Nigerians are wondering why President Muhammadu Buhari has not endorsed his loyal, hardworking, competent and patriotic deputy, but again, the style and strategy of the President is very different. Just as we have presidential candidates awash the APC today, we had so many twists and turns leading to the national convention. Many names were thrown up as the favourite and the acting committee was throwing all sorts of fireworks into the ring including court cases but the President knew his choice and he waited until it was the right time. In his Channels TV interview, Buhari refrained from naming who his successor was, his response was quite cryptic. He said: “No, I wouldn’t say because he may be eliminated if I mention. I better keep it,” the President said with a wry smile. For many Nigerians it’s a no-brainer that President Buhari picks his successor, in fact, that is a hallmark of successful leaders but in doing so, the President must have to consider a few things which are dear to many Nigerians but more importantly Nigerians need someone with capacity to execute. Many will agree with me that President Buhari is keeping the name of his successor close to his chest but one thing that he must consider most is that Nigerians need a patriot. Someone who is not thinking about enriching himself, family, friends and associates but someone who is dedicated to enriching all Nigerians as much as he can. Those closest to the President will be trying to sway him, they will be putting up names that best suit them and a few others. They will be putting up names of those who can help them to continue to hold Nigeria to ransom but what Nigerians want is leader that will be father to all. A leader that can speak the global language and who has already earned global respect. A leader who is keeping up with the times and who understands the importance of technology, human capital development and leadership. A detribalized leader who will put Nigeria first and will always act on behalf of Nigeria and Nigerians on all local and international issues. Whosoever President Buhari picks as his successor will be ultimate legacy and I think he will want to leave a lasting legacy. For those lurking around the President and who have decided to throw all sorts of people up, to extent that they are buying Expression of Interest and Nomination forms under all sorts of groups, I hope the President is not deceived or confused by their antics. Just like Buhari, Nigeria deserves a very popular candidate amongst the citizen. One that can go to the South South and the reception will be wild. A candidate that can visit the North East and the people will be chasing after his bus; a candidate that will go to the North Central and shake hands with the citizens; a candidate that will dress in. https://www.google.com/url?sa=t&source=web&rct=j&url=https://www.vanguardngr.com/2022/05/why-osinbajo-may-be-president-buharis-choice/amp/&ved=2ahUKEwivl96K8t73AhUugf0HHerqDuUQFnoECBAQAQ&usg=AOvVaw3uCDPBy_aeSOFU4zvlIE5x |

Politics › Jonathan, Emefiele Fail To Submit Forms As Osinbajo, Tinubu, Others Return Forms by Forzs(op): 4:37am On May 14, 2022 |
Twenty-five of the 29 presidential aspirants that purchased the All Progressives Congress (APC) expression of interest and nomination forms are now in the frame to face the party’s screening panel later today having submitted their completed forms at press time last night.
The screening will last two days ahead of the primary slated for May 28.
Those who beat the deadline yesterday include Asiwaju Bola Tinubu; Vice President Yemi Osinbajo; President African Development Bank (AfDB), Dr Akinwunmi Adesina; immediate past Minister of Science and Technology, Dr. Ogbonnaya Onu and Senate President Ahmad Lawan.
But the same could not be said of former President Goodluck Jonathan and Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN) Governor Godwin Emefiele both of whom did not turn in the forms bought for them by “friends and well-wishers.”
A source at the APC national secretariat said the two men “have up till midnight to submit their forms. But as at 9 pm, we have not seen them or their agents.”
Simultaneously, a group approached a Federal High Court, Abuja praying it to bar the former president from participating as a candidate in the next presidential election, while a Delta State High Court, Kwale, restrained the board of the CBN and the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) from stopping Emefile from seeking an elective post.
The Nation gathered that the legal directorate of the party on Thursday began the vetting of documents submitted by all aspirants with a view to determining the authenticity of the papers.
A source in the department said the party leadership learnt a big lesson from the last minute disqualification of the party’s governorship candidate and his deputy in Bayelsa State due to some lapses in the documentation of the then deputy governor-elect.
“We are going through all the papers filed by all the aspirants in order to avoid any avoidable mistakes. Anyone with past criminal records or convictions will not be allowed to contest. We want to mitigate any post-election litigation that can upturn our victory,” the source said.
Other presidential aspirants whose nomination forms were received at press time were former Minister of Transportation, Rotimi Amaechi; former Minister of Niger Delta Development, Sen. Godswill Akpabio; former Imo State governor, Sen. Rochas Okorocha; and former Ogun State governor, Sen. Ibikunle Amosun.
Others were Pastor Tunde Bakare; Cross River State governor, Prof. Ben Ayade; his Ebonyi State counterpart, Gov. Dave Umahi; Chairman, Nigeria Governors Forum (NGF) and Ekiti State governor, Dr. Kayode Fayemi; Minister of State, Education, Hon. Emeka Nwajiuba; former Senate President, Sen. Ken Nnamani; Kogi State Governor, Yahaya Bello; Jigawa State Governor Mohammed Badaru Abubakar and former Zamfara State governor, Sen. Ahmed Yerima.
Also on the list of presidential aspirants that filed their papers were Senator Ajayi Borroffice; the only female aspirant, Mrs Uju Kennedy Ohnenye; Pastor Nicholas Felix Nwagbo; former House of Representative Speaker Dimeji Bankole; former Minister of State, Petroleum, Chief Timipre Sylva; former Minister of Information, Chief Ikeobasi Mokelu; and Mr Tein Jack Rich.
Emefiele steps back from presidential contest
Central Bank (CBN) Governor Godwin Emefiele remained at his desk at the Abuja headquarters of the apex bank last night with no official word from him on his perceived presidential ambition.
Although sources close to his office said a statement would be issued to categorically state Emefiele’s position on the presidential race, there was no such statement at press time.
A CBN source said the governor was “on his seat in his office attending to official matters”.
The source said CBN officials were busy making arrangements for the Monetary Policy Committee (MPC) scheduled for next week.
Emefiele, during a visit to President Buhari on Thursday, told reporters to ‘expect news’. He said he was having fun with speculations about his presidential ambition. https://thenationonlineng.net/apc-ticket-tinubu-osinbajo-adesina-22-other-presidential-aspirants-return-forms/

Politics › 2023 Presidency: Niger, Ogun, Katsina, Nasarawa Assembly Speakers Back Osinbajo by Forzs(op): 2:49pm On May 09, 2022*. Modified: 3:32pm On May 09, 2022 |
The presidential ambition of Vice-President Yemi Osinbajo has got a boost with Speakers of four state Houses of Assembly declaring their support for his aspiration, describing him as the best material to succeed President Muhammadu Buhari come 2023. This is just as Vice-President Osinbajo stressed that consultation with the people is critical in governance and important for national development, especially in a country as diverse and complex as Nigeria. The Speakers gave their individual support to Osinbajo’s ambition at a dinner on Sunday hosted by the vice-president at his official residence at Akinola Aguda House, State House, Abuja. Pledging his support for the vice-president, the Speaker of the Niger State House of Assembly, Hon. Abdullahi Wuse, noted that Osinbajo has the best of the capacity to lead as from 2023. He said: “Few people have the intellectual capacity, the capabilities that you are exhibiting as the vice-president of this country. We look forward to a situation where you will be the president. I believe that you will do more if given the opportunity to be president of this country.” Speaking in the same vein, Ogun State House of Assembly Speaker, Hon. Olakunle Oluomo, noted that Nigerians everywhere appreciated the vice-president who he said has shown total capacity in leadership. According to him, the country will experience transformation if the vice-president is elected president in 2023. “His coming will accelerate a lot of development in this country; also he will hit the ground running,” he added. Also speaking, the Katsina State House of Assembly Speaker, Hon. Tasiu Musa-Maigari, commended the vice-president’s “good qualities of leadership, honesty, hard work and loyalty,” adding that he would make a very good president. On his part, the Nasarawa State House of Assembly Speaker, Hon Ibrahim Abdullahi, said: “We appreciate your capacity and intelligence. And we are thankful that we have somebody like Mr. Vice-President in this country. “We don’t need to be reminded that even Mr. President trusts you so much, and trusts your capacity. You love this country, and we are sure by the time Mr. Vice-President takes over from President Muhammadu Buhari, you will start where he ends. “By the special grace of God, the vice-president will take over the ticket of the APC. We are going to line up behind you. If truly, we want this country to prosper, this is the time to rally round Mr. Vice-President. It is not about religion; it is about capacity. We are sure of your capacity and we are sure you are going to take us to the next level.” Earlier in his speech, the vice-president said government by partnership is the kind of relationship that makes governance easier. According to him, “The only way to make a complex country like this work is by consultations. There is no other way.” He, therefore, emphasised that he would apply this partnership model in governance if he was nominated by the All Progressives Congress (APC) as its presidential standard-bearer and elected as president of Nigeria. Osinbajo also stressed the value of his experience to lead Nigeria as president in 2023. His words: “In terms of training on the job, I think I am quite well trained. So, I believe very strongly that although there are other contestants who are also very capable and competent, I believe that just in terms of readiness, I think that if there is anyone who is prepared for that, I am certainly that person. “So, if by the grace of God, I am nominated by the party and the electorate, I think that God helping us, we will be able to do much in office. And one of the very important things for me is what I would describe as a partnership.” The vice-president recalled his tour of the Niger Delta in 2017 on behalf of the President, which birthed the administration’s Niger Delta New Vision, and restored peace and stability, among other significant development gains in the region. “People want to be engaged; they want to be spoken to; they want to hear what government is doing; they want you to hear what their opinions are. “That engagement taught me something very crucial. The most important thing of all in this country is for us to be able to sit down and talk on any issue. People want to be able to express their views, and they want to be heard/helped, and we must create the time to hear them to understand their views. “Whatever policy that is, engagement is always the best approach. I think that has succeeded in so many instances. I am confident that the partnership model is one that will always work,” Osinbajo said. He also highlighted the partnership relationship between the presidency and the 36 state governors despite party differences, and how it led to President Buhari approving bailout to states to pay workers’ salaries, budget support facilities and Paris Debt refunds, among other packages from the federal government in the past years. He stated that: “The reason why we were able to, from day one, without discriminating along party lines, why we were able to ensure that all sides of this outstanding salaries were paid as soon as we got into office was just because we had established that (partnership) from day one. So, the governors were able to come to us to say there is a problem here, how do we solve it? “The special packages that we put together for the states were on the basis of a partnership. We all worked together to ensure that there is success all round. I think that the governors would testify that that partnership model is a model that has worked.” Osinbajo further noted that the partnership has also helped in the cordial working relationships with all the state governors under the auspices of the National Economic Council (NEC) which he chairs. https://www.thisdaylive.com/index.php/2022/05/09/2023-presidency-niger-ogun-katsina-nasarawa-assembly-speakers-back-osinbajo/Lalasticla Mynd44 |
Politics › Fashola, Tinubu’s Joker Against Osinbajo, Fayemi, Others by Forzs(op): 3:49pm On May 08, 2022 |
LAGOS – The leading contender for the All Progressives Congress (APC) presidential ticket and National Leader, Asiwaju Bola Ahmed Tinubu, may be considering handing over his mandate and structure to former Lagos State governor and incumbent Minister of Works and Housing, Babatunde Fashola, at the dying minutes of the party’s presidential convention, Sunday Independent has gathered. Sources close to the camp of the APC National Leader, told Sunday Independent in Lagos on Saturday that Tinubu had been feeling slighted by his former followers who now have become his opponents in the coming presidential primaries of the party. Some of the followers, the sources indicated, included the Vice President, Prof Yemi Osinbajo; Governor Kayode Fayemi of Ekiti State; Pastor Tunde Bakare; for Governor of Ogun State, Ibikunle Amosun and any other aspirant from the party in the South West. Sunday Independent gathered that while the aspirants would be going round to outplay Tinubu during the primaries, the APC Leader had kept his joker under wraps, which the sources said would be to let his opponent to continue believing that they had all it would take to defeat him during the primaries. One of the sources told Sunday Independent: “Please, don’t mind these disloyal and disrespectful former ‘boys’ of Asiwaju who are now biting the fingers that fed them. “Asiwaju made them whatever they think they are now politically. Now, they have the audacity to challenge him to a contest by picking presidential forms instead of allowing him as their ‘Master’ to go for the South West.” Another source questioned the popularity of Osinbajo, whose only qualification for the nation’s Number One position, he said, was only being a Vice President to President, which was also made possible by Tinubu himself. The source said: “Osinbajo has no political structure anywhere, be it in Lagos or in the South West. People do not consider Osinbajo as a politician. He is a lawyer and Pastor. “All the structures in Lagos and South West which all the aspirants are laying claim to belong to Tinubu. All the state APC chairmen in the South West belong to Tinubu’s structure and he has been meeting with them and taking care of them over the years. “The governors think that as the party’s leaders in the state’s they control the structures in the state. What they do not know is that the structures they think they control belong to Asiwaju. Asiwaju has been oiling the structures over the years. Very soon, their eyes will clear.” https://independent.ng/fashola-tinubus-joker-against-osinbajo-fayemi-others/ |

MikoB: This is the standard in most advanced countries ,it will really bring down the lists of many clowns and pretenders that bought the 100 million naira forms as if money is out fashion. I am sure only few of them will be able to submit the forms with this requirement. Bravo apc. Very very on point! |
Politics › Re: 370 Statutory Delegates Must Sign Your Forms, APC Tells Osinbajo, Amaechi, Othe by Forzs(op): 9:33am On May 08, 2022 |
seunmsg: It is not everyone that picked the form that will submit and participate in the primary election. So you see, they simply donated money to the party.
The N100million nomination form was a smart way by the party to raise funds for the general election. With the stringent conditions attached to submission of the forms, only the real contenders will meet up. Absolutely correct, but most of them thought they got a chance, but the party says, she raised the fee to 100million so that can discourage the pretenders, not that the party did it intentionally to have many aspirants to raise money, for the party to bring this condition of statutory delegates signature, it will go along way to seperate the contenders and pretenders. |

princdebola201: you re naive. A smart person should know these people re trying to fund APC 2023 General Elections which is good for the party. The new electoral act make it impossible for candidates to fund their ambitions. A presidential candidate can't spend over 1.5 billion, is that enough? I am sure some of you don't even the meaning of the words you use here, you are the naive one here, what does requirement of signing forms has to do with the party raising money for the election, if at all anyone want to make money here, it will be statutory delegates. |

Tinubu, Osinbajo, Amaechi and Yahaya Bello Tinubu, Osinbajo, Amaechi and Bello Lawmakers warn parties not to jettison zoning As a precondition for submitting their expression of interest and nomination forms, presidential aspirants on the platform of the ruling All Progressives Congress are to submit with the forms the signatures of 10 statutory delegates from each state and the Federal Capital Territory, Sunday PUNCH has learnt. One of our correspondents, who sighted the forms, observed that each aspirant was required to get the signatures of 370 statutory delegates, covering the 36 states of the federation and the Federal Capital Territory. As of Saturday afternoon, about 17 aspirants had obtained the N100m forms, but it could not be ascertained how many of them had submitted the forms. Those who have picked the forms include Vice-President Yemi Osinbajo; Asiwaju Bola Tinubu; Minister of Transportation, Mr Rotimi Amaechi; and Governors Yahaya Bello and Abubakar Badaru of Kogi and Jigawa states. About 30 aspirants have so far declared interest in the coveted office on the APC platform while about 17 have obtained forms already. The party in the guidelines and timetables released by its National Organising Secretary, Sulaiman Argungu, fixed Tuesday as the last day for the submission of the forms. The party had come under criticism for the Form 18 ‘Letter of Withdrawal’ attached to the forms. The aspirants were expected to sign the letter and submit it with their forms and other documents. The letter, which must be signed before a commissioner for oaths/ notary public before submission, read in part, “I hereby voluntarily withdraw my candidacy from the contest. My withdrawal is in the best interest of our great party, the All Progressives Congress.” Some of the aspirants were said to be uncomfortable with the letter as they perceive it as a move to impose a consensus candidate on them. Findings by Sunday PUNCH revealed that getting the statutory delegates’ signatures and the letter of withdrawal were some of the reasons a number of the aspirants had yet to submit their forms. The statutory delegates include the President and his deputy, serving governors and ex-governors, State Executive Council members, National Executive Committee and National Working Committee members, as well as all former national officers of the party, among others. Meanwhile, members of the National Assembly across political parties and regions have asked the ruling APC and the opposition Peoples Democratic Party to jettison the idea of not fielding southern presidential candidates for the 2023 general election. The lawmakers predicted dire consequences for the country should power be retained in the North beyond next year. Neither the APC nor the PDP has zoned its presidential ticket to the South, though some northern aspirants in the major parties are already campaigning for the presidency. It’s better for APC to lose with southern candidate – Ndume A ranking member of the Senate, Ali Ndume (APC, Borno), told one of our correspondents that it would be unfair for the South not to assume power in 2023. Ndume, who is leading the Minister of Transportation, Rotimi Amaechi’s presidential campaign, said, “So, an agreement, whether written or unwritten, is an agreement and equal rights and justice are famous in every religion. The fear, as they are claiming now, is that if the PDP fields a northern candidate, then the APC’s chance of winning is doubtful. “They have forgotten that a southerner (Jonathan) in 2011 contested against a very popular northerner (Buhari) and he lost. To me, it is better to lose honourably than to win dishonourably.” Another senator, Chukwuka Utazi (PDP, Enugu), noted that though power rotation and zoning were not captured in the 1999 Constitution (as amended), the law could not contain all the issues affecting a people. When asked what would happen if the PDP jettisons power shift to the South, Utazi said, “It will be too bad. That is not good for the PDP. I know the party is grappling with the problem of not having an authority over the college of governors that we have presently. That is a challenge; if they manage it very well, it will be okay for them. If they don’t, that will signal the end of the PDP as a party.” ‘It’ll spell doom for APC if power remains in the North’ On what the APC stands to lose by dumping power rotation, a member of the House of Representatives, Rotimi Agunsoye (APC, Lagos), said, “I cannot say anything for now on that. I am a party man and I have leaders in the South here that we listen to. What is fair is fair. That will spell doom for the party.” Another member of the House, Babajimi Benson (APC, Lagos), urged “the APC and the PDP to zone the presidency to the South as we have competent, capable and accomplished people in the South who can keep the flag flying.” He stated, “Anything short of that, we will be sitting on issues that will be a Trojan horse that we don’t know where it will carry us to. “Nigeria is sitting on a keg of gunpowder right now, so you must zone the presidency to the South, either to the South-South, South-West or the South-East. They should compete and present one candidate that everybody will support.” Another member of the House, Dagomie Abiante (PDP, Rivers), said there was the need for fairness, equity and justice, adding that where a president comes from does not automatically translate to development of his region. “Today, we have a Buhari presidency of northern extraction. How well has he performed in the area of security? How many villages in the North can the people sleep with their two eyes closed?” he queried. The leader of the South-West caucus in the House, Olufemi Fakeye (APC, Osun), said lawmakers from the geopolitical zone would meet and take a position on zoning. Another ranking member of the caucus, who spoke on condition of anonymity, said it would be fair for power to shift to the South, noting, “I was not privy to any gentleman’s agreement (on zoning), https://punchng.com/370-statutory-delegates-must-sign-your-forms-apc-tells-osinbajo-amaechi-others/?ampLalasticla Mynd44 |
