The emergence of Muhammadu Buhari as the flag-bearer of the All Progressive Congress, APC, is a fatal error, the Nigerian presidency has said. Speaking in an interview with Channels Television on Monday morning, the Senior Special Assistant to the President on Public Affairs, Doyin Okupe, said the opposition party made a grave mistake at a time Nigerians were clamouring for development and a dissociation from anything or anyone that has anything to do with the country’s past. “When Major Buhari emerged as the APC flag bearer, I knew that was a fatal error,” he said. “It’s a fatal error because number one, Nigerians are looking for future development, you know, a disengagement from everything that has got to do with our past. You are looking at Major General Buhari, Babangida, Abdulsalam, Obasanjo. These are very respectable elders and leaders who have done their best but they are a phase of our leadership that is passing off.” Mr. Okupe, a member of the ruling party, Peoples Democratic Party, PDP, said the opposition could not be talking about change with someone who would remind Nigerians of their gloomy history. He said it was important to note that Nigerians needed to make a clear decision between having a transformation agenda that had worked and produced results and one which, he said, did not have vision. “For APC to have now brought, you know, part of our past history that we are not so proud of and then you are talking about change, you know, how can you make a change with somebody who was part of our problem?” he asked. “We know that Nigerians are not stupid, you know, a clear decision will have to be taken between having an agenda – transformation agenda – that has worked, that has produced and having listened, you know, Buhari has spoken about three occasions – at his declaration, at his inauguration, I mean, at his primaries. I have asked people; nobody can remember anything that Buhari has said. “There is no vision, you know. The only thing that has been told to us – not even by him but by other people – is that Buhari has integrity and he is honest and he is incorruptible which are also not true,” he said. “At the appropriate time, these issues will be taken up.” He also said he was sure his boss, President Goodluck Jonathan, would defeat Mr. Buhari and win the 2015 general elections. Mr. Buhari, a former Nigeria’s Military Head of State emerged the presidential candidate of the APC on December 10 following the party’s presidential primary election that also included a former Vice President, Atiku Abubakar; Imo State governor, Rochas Okorocha; Kano State Governor, Rabiu Kwankwaso and the publisher of Leadership Newspapers, Sam Nda-Isaiah. Mr. Buhari will be contesting against Mr. Jonathan at the presidential election scheduled for February 14, 2015. http://www.premiumtimesng.com/news/headlines/173298-buharis-emergence-apc-flag-bearer-fatal-error-presidency.html |

The Peoples Democratic Party, PDP, has said that its flag-bearer, President Goodluck Jonathan, is up for the presidential contest in the February 14, 2015 election with the former Governor of Lagos state, Alhaji Bola Tinubu and not General Muhammadu Buhari.http://www.premiumtimesng.com/news/more-news/173253-vote-buhari-vote-tinubu-pdp.html |
Former Head of State and flag bearer of the All Progressives Congress (APC) for the 2015 presidential election, Muhammadu Buhari has given party leader the prerogative to choose his running mate, according to a report by online news platform, TheCable. Although the closeness of Rivers State Governor Rotimi Amaechi to Buhari had made many see him as the likeliest candidate for the VP slot, but Tinubu’s work to ensure Buhari wins the primaries has made the presidential aspirant show appreciation by giving him the VP slot, leaving Amaechi out in the cold. “Politics is not winner-takes-all. Tinubu worked round the clock to deliver a huge chunk of votes to Buhari in the primary, and it is only fair that he is honoured in return,” an aide to Buhari told the news platform. Tinubu is yet to present disclose his choice, according to TheCable, but he is opposed to Amaechi, who is by far one of the biggest donors to Buhari’s campaign. “If the party exco settles for a Muslim/Muslim ticket, Tinubu himself will be the number one choice. If not, then Adams Oshiomhole stands the best chance among the rest,” an APC chieftain from the Southwest told TheCable. An announcement of the financial choice of Tinubu and the APC is expected next week. http://www.informationng.com/2014/12/2015-buhari-leaves-vp-decision-to-tinubu.html |

Nigeria’s main opposition party, All Progressives Congress, APC, has resolved to confine its search for a vice presidential candidate for the 2015 election to the country’s South West, a day after electing former military ruler, Muhammadu Buhari, as its flagbearer for the polls, those familiar with the matter have told PREMIUM TIMES. Mr. Buhari, from the North West, defeated four other contenders Thursday to emerge APC’s presidential candidate, set to challenge President Goodluck Jonathan of the Peoples Democratic Party, PDP, in February. The former military ruler’s running mate is expected to come from southern Nigeria- one among South West, South East, and South South. But the party has yet to agree on a choice after 24 hours of intense negotiations and talks between its top leaders. Party officials told PREMIUM TIMES on Friday that except the APC decides to reverse its decision, the searchlight has been narrowed to states in southwest alone. The reason, they said, is the belief that only the South West delivered to Mr. Buhari approximately 100 per cent block votes. Officials believe that while the South East and South South regions supported Mr. Buhari by voting for him, significant portions of those votes were also shared with other candidates, including former Vice President Atiku Abubakar, Governors Rabiu Kwankwaso of Kano and Rochas Okorocha of Imo State. There was speculation on Friday that the Governor of Rivers state, Rotimi Amaechi, had been chosen as Mr. Buhari’s running mate. However, one senior official of the party denied the plan. “The South West gave General 100 per cent of their votes and so it is only fair that they get to produce the vice president,” the source, who declined to be named because the issue is not yet official, said. The official also said a “victory” dinner was held at the resident of one of the national leaders of the party, Bola Tinubu, in Ikoyi after the election on Thursday and the matter was discussed briefly. “Another round of meeting was held today, there will be another one tomorrow here in Lagos, but I believe probably the last meeting will be held in Abuja on Monday after which whoever is selected will be made known,” he said. Parties have up to December 18 to submit names of their candidates to the Independent National Electoral Commission, INEC. The choice of South West to produce the Vice President is also strategic because Mr. Buhari is expected to get substantial votes from the northern states and will need to get the votes from the South West to stand any chance of upstaging incumbent President Jonathan. Mr. Buhari got 3,430, to beat the other candidates, who also included publisher, Sam Nda-Isaiah. Atiku got 954 votes, Kwankwaso: 974, Rochas Okorocha: 624 and Mr. Nda Isaiah: 10 votes. Among the major contenders to the vice presidential ticket are Yemi Osibanjo, a professor of Law, who was the Attorney General and Commissioner for Justice in Lagos state under Governor Tinubu. The immediate past governor of Ekiti state, who also chaired the National Convention Planning Committee of the primary, Kayode Fayemi, is also under consideration. http://www.premiumtimesng.com/news/headlines/173201-apc-narrows-search-buharis-running-mate-south-west.html |

A former Head of State, Muhammadu Buhari, the All Progressives Congress (APC) presidential candidate in the Feb. 14, 2015 presidential election, on Thursday promised to govern the country in accordance with the Nigerian constitution if elected. Mr. Buhari made the promise at the Teslim Balogun Stadium, Surulere, in his acceptance speech after being declared winner of the party’s presidential primary. The Chairman of the APC National Convention Committee, Kayode Fayemi, who declared the results of the primary, said Mr. Buhari polled a total of 3,430 votes to defeat former Vice President Atiku Abubakar, who got 954votes. Mr. Fayemi said Governor Rabiu Kwankwaso of Kano State scored 974 votes, Governor Rochas Okorocha of Imo 624 votes while Mr. Sam Nda-Isaiah, the Publisher of Leadership Newspapers, polled 10 votes. Mr. Buhari, after being declared winner, said: “I understand there are challenges ahead. I promise that my administration will govern Nigeria in accordance with the constitution.’’ He promised to put in place a government that would realise a new Nigeria and put the country on a level where it would be respected more in the international community. The APC presidential candidate promised to give priority to agriculture, healthcare and creation of wealth as well as enhance the power of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) to tackle corruption. Mr. Buhari, who described his victory as a great triumph of democracy, called for the support of all Nigerians. “I need your support, I need your help to become the President of Nigeria in next year’s presidential election. “I see this as an opportunity to rescue the nation from joblessness, poverty and to tackle all its challenges,” he said. He commended the convention committee and leadership of the party for conducting a hitch-free programme, saying that the outcome of the primary was a testimony that “democracy is at work”. Mr. Buhari also thanked other aspirants for accepting the outcome of the election and promised to work with them during electioneering. http://www.premiumtimesng.com/news/173171-will-govern-nigeria-accordance-constitution-buhari.html?utm_source=&utm_medium=twitter |

A man was thrown off the roof of a building and stoned to death by ISIS fighters for being gày. Horrifying new images posted on a jihadist website by ISIS militants show a group of fighters throwing the man off the roof of a building. Before the man was thrown to his death, his killers read the ‘ judgement ’ from the Islamic court which ordered that the man should be thrown from the highest point in the city for being gày, Daily Mail reports. In a statement which accompanied the images, ISIS said: “the Islamic court in Wilayet al-Furat (which refers to an area which crosses the frontier between Syria and Iraq) decided that a man who has practised sodomy must be thrown off the highest point in the city,” adding that he would also be “stoned to death. Moments before he is flung to his death, a mob of at least eight men can be seen atop of the building that is believed to be somewhere in northern Iraq. Reports say that after being hurled from the building the accused homosexual was stoned to death as he was dying. The Sudanese authorities have denied 26 Nigerians entry into their country over suspicion that they might have been infected by the dreaded Ebola Virus Disease, one of those repatriated has told PREMIUM TIMES. Hauwa’u Ibrahim Bakori, a second year student of Pharmacy at Al Ahfad University for Women, Omdurman, said she and 25 others were denied entry after arriving Khartoum Airport on Wednesday. They were detained, and then deported to Nigeria on Thursday, Ms. Bakori said. Ms Bakori is in her second year at the Sudanese university and had travelled to Nigeria on holidays. The Nigerians had travelled to Khartoum via an Ethiopian Airline flight ET 910 from Abuja on Wednesday, travelling via Addis Ababa. But on arrival in Khartoum, authorities seized their passports, and arranged boarding passes for them to return to Nigeria. They were sent back to the Nigerian capital via the same Ethiopian Airline on Thursday. They were not tested for Ebola, Ms. Bakori said. The Sudanese government took the measure even though the World Health Organisation declared Nigeria free of Ebola since October 20. The Sudanese authorities and the Nigerian foreign ministry could not be reached to comment for this story at this time. The global body said Nigeria completed an extended 42 – day observation period and called the country’s ability to contain a deadly virus a “spectacular success”. “The lines on the tabular situation reports, sent to WHO each day by its country office in Nigeria, have now been full of zeros for 42 days,” WHO said in a statement October 20. “This is a spectacular success story that shows that Ebola can be contained. The story of how Nigeria ended what many believed to be potentially the most explosive Ebola outbreak imaginable is worth telling in detail.” Ebola was imported to Nigeria by a Liberian-American man, Patrick Sawyer, July 20. Mr. Sawyer arrived in Lagos and infected medical staff who attended to him after he fell ill at the airport. Nigeria recorded 19 cases of the virus, out of which seven died, amongst them doctors and nurses. Nigeria has not recorded a new case since October 2. http://www.premiumtimesng.com/news/173139-breaking-sudan-deports-46-nigerians-over-ebola-fears.html |
Flets:Nice contradictory statement |
The former Head of State, General Muhammadu Buhari (rtd) is the presidential aspirant on the platform of the main opposition party, the All Progressive Congress (APC), in the forthcoming elections. 1. Man of integrity General Buhari is the man of integrity. As a former Petroleum Minister, Buhari does not own an oil rig or even a petrol station in his name. Since retiring from active service in the government, the General has lived on his pension. When he served as the PTF chairman, he refused to draw a salary from the commission, explaining that his conscience would not allow him take money from a government already paying his pension. He owns two houses: one at Kaduna; the other at Daura, his hometown in Katsina State. 2. He is not corrupt Nigeria is reeling in corruption. Buhari won a rare reputation as a fighter against corruption during his time in charge of Nigeria from 1983-85. Most Nigerians agree he did not use the presidency to enrich himself and his backers. His iron- fisted administration jailed several politicians on graft charges. Gen. Buhari’s campaign team have made it clear that they would not be pre-occupied with pursuing past corrupt government officials to the detriment of the national development; rather, the CPC manifesto says the Buhari Administration will strengthen anti-corruption agencies (EFCC, ICPC and the Police), while it concentrates on fulfilling its campaign promises to the Nigerian populace. When the head is good, it is only a matter of time the body will get better. 3. Religion Buhari’s ethnic background is Fulani, and his faith is Islam; he is a native of Daura in Katsina State of Nigeria. But he is not a religious fanatic. He also said he was not opposed to a Muslim-Muslim ticket in the 2015 elections. Once he said: “I have not absolutely closed my mind to picking a Christian or Muslim as running mate if I get the ticket. I firmly believe that Nigerians, having gone through what they have gone through, realise it is not a matter of religion, but a matter of Nigeria. “And the main religions, Christianity and Islam, they know and they believe in the Almighty God. The question of stealing and short-changing people in the name of religion should stop.” 4. Insurgency Buhari is a retired Major General of the Nigerian Army who was the military ruler of Nigeria from December 31, 1983 to August 27, 1985. He knows a lot of strategies and may use them to end the Boko Haram violence and he vowed to do it. The former Head of the State has promised to end insurgency and other forms of anxiety in the country, if elected President in the 2015 general elections. He also called on religious leaders to join hands together and find a lasting solution that would curtail the persistent killing of innocent souls in some parts of the North. 5. Family man General Buhari’s first wife was the late Hajiya Safinatu Buhari. He courted her when she was fourteen and married her at the age of eighteen. A very shy and conservative Muslim woman, she was not too visible on the social radar.

A 29-year-old photographer, Ejeh Smith, and his wife, Grace, 26, are in pains and receiving treatment at a Lagos hospital after a police officer, identified as Dada Ogunsanya, allegedly tortured them with his rifle. The incident happened at the Lekki Roundabout on Wednesday, last week, while the couple was in a taxi en route to their home at Parkview Estate. PUNCH Metro learnt that the police officer was among a seven-man team, patrolling the area around 10pm. The police team was said to have stopped the taxi driver and demanded that he opened his boot for a routine check. The taxi driver, Ndubuisi Iheaka, told our correspondent that after he opened his boot which contained scaffolding belts, the policeman demanded to see his driving licence. “I was about getting the driving licence when he started flashing his torchlight on my passengers who were sitting at the back. “The wife told the officer not to flash the torch on them since the inner light of the vehicle was on. “Because of what she said, the policeman asked them to come down from the cab. This started an argument. The next thing I saw was that the policeman pulled my passenger (Ejeh) by his trousers, and his wife went to plead with him to stop. “But instead, he slapped her and punched her husband. He was wearing a ring, which inflicted a deep cut on Ejeh’s face. After that, he used the butt of his gun to hit him in his eye and face. He also dragged his wife on the road.” Grace said the policeman, apart from slapping her, stepped on her tummy. “If I was pregnant that night, I would have lost my pregnancy. I was only trying to pet him to leave my husband since he did not have business with us. I told him to face the cab driver and leave us alone. “The other policemen were just looking at him while he dragged me on the ground. A man riding a tricycle at the time was the one who rescued me. He said the policemen must call their Divisional Police Officer or else he would not leave the scene,” she said. The Ikoyi DPO, Mrs. Aisha Haruna, was said to have arrived at the scene. Ejeh claimed he could barely see because blood was dripping from his eyes, while his wife was vomiting blood. He added that the DPO ordered that they be taken to the station to make statements. He said, “But we told her that we needed to first treat ourselves before we could make statements. That was when we were given forms and referred to the Falomo Police Hospital. We paid for the treatment and we also went to the eye clinic for treatment.” His wife claimed that the DPO seized her phone and asked an inspector at the station to delete all the pictures and video recording she did of the incident. “Even my personal data were deleted. And when I asked the DPO why she did that, she said we deserved the treatment we got. She said she would have locked us up in the cell if not for our injuries. She said we did not know how to talk,” she added. The family lawyer of the victims, Mr. Sunday Agbinya, said his office would write a petition to the Inspector General of Police to redress the wrong done to his clients. “This is a case of assault occasioning harm and we intend to challenge it. We will send a petition to the IG. We want the police to conduct a full investigation into this,” he said. The legal officer of a non-governmental organisation, Project Alert on Violence Against Women, Mr. Ben Odeh, said the police officer responsible for the act should be disciplined for torturing the couple. He said, “It is a breach of their constitutional rights. The policeman went too far.” The Police Public Relations Officer, DSP Kenneth Nwosu, confirmed the incident. He said, “Yes, the incident happened in the Ikoyi division.Inquiries are on as well as disciplinary procedures.” http://www.gq234.com/news/news-policeman-tortures-man-wife-in-lagos-justice-must-be-done/

Ahead of its national convention billed to hold in Abuja Wednesday and Thursday, the ruling Peoples Democratic Party, PDP, has dismissed any threat posed to President Goodluck Jonathan’s re-election by his two major challengers. The party said even where All Progressives Congress, APC’s frontline contenders, former head of state, Muhammadu Buhari, and former Vice President Atiku Abubakar, presented a unified candidacy, Mr. Jonathan would defeat them both and still emerge victorious at February’s presidential election. The spokesperson of the PDP, Olisa Metuh, made the assertion when he addressed a press conference, Tuesday, at the National Secretariat of the party in Abuja. “We are today serving notice to the opposition APC to expect a crushing defeat at the polls,” Mr. Metuh said. “In view of our confidence, preparedness and the popularity of our candidate, we declare that the APC can put forth its two frontline aspirants in one bunch, namely General Muhammadu Buhari and Alhaji Atiku Abubakar as joint presidential candidates with their collective credentials and followership to face our candidate, President Goodluck Jonathan,” he said. Mr. Metuh added that the job of selling the idea of re- electing Mr. Jonathan to Nigerians has been made easy by the president’s record of performance. “The PDP is (rest) assured that we have a very good product to sell to Nigerians,” he emphasized. “We are confident that President Jonathan, as our candidate, is primed to win the 2015 presidential election based on his popularity deriving from his forthrightness, humility and steadfastness to the Nigerian project coupled with his record of verifiable achievements.” The National convention of the PDP is expected to ratify Mr. Jonathan’s status as the party’s sole presidential candidate having been endorsed by all organs of the party. In the same vein, the APC will between Wednesday and Thursday choose one of five candidates to face Mr. Jonathan. At the party’s national convention holding in Lagos, delegates will pick one amongst Messrs Buhari and Atiku, the governors of Kano State, Rabiu Kwankwaso, Imo State, Rochas Okorocha and newspaper publisher, Sam Nda- Isaiah. Mr. Metuh said the PDP is going into its own primaries with great excitement. “For us in the PDP, it is neither a matter of conjecture nor propaganda; we are certain that with the grassroots support and the love he enjoys from Nigerians across board, President Jonathan will secure an emphatic victory at the polls,” he said. Why Jonathan needs a second term The PDP spokesperson said Mr. Jonathan deserves a second term to continue with the job of maintaining the country’s unity, stability and prosperity, arguing that such has been the driving force and inspiration of the PDP government in delivering its mandate in the last three years. “This trinity of unity, stability and prosperity has made him the most suitable President for our great nation in these present times,” he said. Mr. Metuh said Nigeria has never witnessed the kind of security challenges it is presently facing with insurgency in some part of the north. “The insurgency is hitting at the heart of our national unity and cohesion. Instead of reacting in ways that could damage the trust and love of Nigerians for one another, the President has acted more on the side of caution by ensuring that actions to defeat terrorism are carefully thought-out and pursued,” Mr. Metuh said. Mr. Metuh recalled that when President Jonathan was to declare a state of emergency in the northern states of Borno, Adamawa and Yobe last year, some persons were of the view that the emergency rule should be total by removing all the democratic structures. He said the president thought differently and refused to tamper with the democratic structures in those states. Doing so, according to Mr. Metuh, would have threatened the country’s democracy and by extension the unity of the nation. “The president must be commended for showing leadership,” he said. He also said Mr. Jonathan must specifically be praised for embarking on electoral reform, which has helped to strengthen the integrity of Nigeria’s elections. He said the president intervened in the aftermath of the 2011 general elections, which witnessed political polarization along ethnic and religious lines. “We remember that the results of the election were greeted with violent protests in some Northern States. “Following his demonstrated commitment to credible, free and fair elections, the votes of the electorate now count as exemplified in the Edo, Ondo, Anambra, Ekiti and Osun gubernatorial elections,” he said. He said the president has been able to stabilize the polity by his pan-Nigerian outlook and approach to governance. The party said Mr. Jonathan has been able to give every geo- political zone a sense of belonging in terms of infrastructure development, economic and human capital empowerment. “Besides, the visible and concrete infrastructure development in our nation, President Jonathan has been able to demonstrate a deep sense of equanimity in providing leadership, in spite of the incendiary remarks by some opposition leaders,” he said. “Amidst the recessions and economic downturn in most nations of the world, our economy has been stabilized, our unity preserved and our democracy enhanced. “Under President Jonathan, our nation has witnessed remarkable progress and landmark developments in all sectors of the Nigerian public life, through his Transformation Agenda. “The administration has revived the comatose railway transportation with some of the rail lines already in operation. Lagos-Kano is already in operation with new coaches providing improved services. “Not only have the nation’s highways improved, ongoing works can be seen in almost all parts of the country. When the Jonathan administration came on board, only 5,000 out of the 35,000 kilometers of federal roads were motorable. Today, the Jonathan government has rehabilitated and reconstructed 20,000 additional kilometers. The remaining 10,000 kilometers will be completed in the next three years while other new road projects will be executed,” he said. He said there have been monumental achievements in the agriculture sector, particularly in the distribution of fertilizer, development in the production of rice, cassava and other Nigerian staples. The party said the Nigerian economy is growing at an average rate of 6.5 percent. http://www.premiumtimesng.com/news/headlines/172852-put-together-buhari-atiku-cant-defeat-jonathan-pdp-boasts.html |
