The Chadian Ambassador to Nigeria, Mr. Isah Braimah, has absolved his country of funding or arming the Boko Haram insurgents and asked the #BringBackOurGirls coalition members, who visited his mission on Wednesday in Abuja, to meet the Federal Government for answers on the abducted Chibok girls. The envoy stated that his country had no inkling of the whereabouts of the over 200 Chibok girls who were abducted by the Boko Haram sect in April, 2014, stressing that it was only the Nigerian government that should be held responsible for the rescue of the schoolgirls. Some members of the BBOG had stormed the Chadian embassy located at Maitama, Abuja, on Wednesday with banners, asking the Chadian government to explain its roles in the insurgency in the North-East. They also demanded a response to a media report that a close ally of the Chadian President had been arrested by Cameroonian gendarmes, with lethal arms meant for Boko Haram. The leader of the BBOG members, Aisha Yesufu, who led four representatives of the movement to the meeting with the ambassador, quoted Braimah as saying that Chad was not supporting Boko Haram insurgents in its war against Nigeria. According to Yesufu, the envoy accused the Nigeria Police Force of dragging the name of his county in the mud by alleging that it arrested a Chadian with arms. Yesufu said Braimah challenged the police to provide evidence of Chadian involvement in the terrorism in Nigeria. The BBOG leader, who briefed other coalition members after the meeting outside the Chadian embassy gate, stated that the ambassador could not provide satisfactory answers to many questions that were posed to him on the Boko Haram insurgency and his nation’s questionable roles. “The ambassador said the way Chadians practised Islam is different from Nigeria because Muslims co-exist peacefully with others. He said we should meet our government for answers on the Chibok girls and denied that his country was supporting or sponsoring Boko Haram,” Yesufu explained. She said that the group was advised to send a letter to President Idris Deby of Chad, who would be expected to give a detailed response to the BBOG’s inquiries. Yesufu added that her movement would also send a letter to President Goodluck Jonathan, as advised by the envoy, to demand an update on the efforts being made to rescue the Chibok girls who had been in Boko Haram captivity for seven months. Earlier, the BBOG campaigners had a tough time entering the embassy, as stern-looking policemen and women from the FCT Police Command manned the embassy gate, thinking the campaigners wanted to foment trouble. But an embassy official discussed with the leaders of the BBOG and it was agreed that only five members would be allowed to have a meeting with the ambassador. http://www.punchng.com/news/were-not-funding-bharam-chad-envoy-tells-bbog/ |
The global corruption watchdog, Transparency International, has ranked Nigeria as the 39th most corrupt nation in the world. According to the Corruption Perception Index 2014 released on Wednesday, Nigeria scored 27 out of a maximum 100 marks to clinch the 136th position out of the 175 countries surveyed for the report. Nigeria appeared to have improved by eight points against its 2013 rating of 144th of 175 countries last year. It will be recalled that the Transparency International Corruption Perception Index ranked Nigeria 35th most corrupt nation in the world in 2012. A statement issued by the Transparency International noted that more than two thirds of the 175 countries in the 2014 Corruption Perceptions Index scored below 50, on a scale from 0 (perceived to be highly corrupt) to 100 (perceived to be very clean). Denmark is the least corrupt nation in the world, ranking first out of the 175 countries surveyed while North Korea and Somalia are the most corrupt nations of the world. The Transparency International said while top performer, Denmark, had strong rule of law, support for civil society and clear rules governing the behaviour of those in public positions, it also set an example by announcing plans to create a public register, such as beneficial ownership information for all companies incorporated in Denmark. This measure, according to the corruption watchdog, will make it harder for the corrupt to hide behind companies registered in another person’s name. Botswana comes top as the least corrupt nation in Africa, ranking 31st least corrupt globally while South Africa is ranked 67th. Transparency International Chairman, José Ugaz, in a statement on the TI website, said countries at the bottom needed to adopt radical anti-corruption measures in favour of their people. “The 2014 Corruption Perceptions Index shows that economic growth is undermined and efforts to stop corruption fade when leaders and high level officials abuse power to appropriate public funds for personal gain,” Ugaz said. According to Ugaz, countries at the top of the index should make sure they do not export corrupt practices to underdeveloped countries. “The biggest falls were in Turkey (-5), Angola, China, Malawi and Rwanda (all -4). The biggest improvers were Côte d´Ivoire, Egypt, Saint Vincent and the Grenadines (+5) and Afghanistan, Jordan, Mali and Swaziland (+4),” the statement said. The anti-corruption group said it was currently running a campaign to unmask the corrupt, urging the European Union, the United States and G20 countries to follow Denmark’s lead and create public registers that would make clear “who really controls, or is the beneficial owner, of every company.” http://www.punchng.com/news/nigeria-now-39th-most-corrupt-nation-says-ti/ |

A presidential aspirant of the All Progressive Congress, APC, Atiku Abubakar, has said President Goodluck Jonathan’s poor leadership was due to a lack of experience. He said Mr. Jonathan was not qualified to lead Nigeria as a president. The former vice president was addressing delegates of the APC primaries in Jos on Tuesday at his residence. He said Mr. Jonathan was forced into office and did not willingly contest the 2011 elections. Mr. Abubakar said Mr. Jonathan had fallen short of ideas to govern Nigeria, considering the current security situation. “Today, we are suffering all forms of issues as a country, because we have someone on board, who was not qualified to vie for the presidency, that is why he is doing what he is doing, because he did not seek for the position he is occupying,” Mr. Abubakar said. He said he was contesting the forthcoming elections to correct the wrongs in Nigeria. “Of all those contesting the 2015 presidential election in Nigeria, I am the most qualified,” he said. “I served Nigeria eight years as vice president in a democratic government; who among them has done such, and I am the most suitable. But I am not desperate. If I was desperate I should have supported (Olusegun) Obasanjo’s third time plan, but I rejected the idea, that was why the third term ambition could not succeed. If I did, all those in government today, where would they have been? “Apart from this, I am one of those who fought tooth and nail for the return of democratic governance in Nigeria. Some persons lost their lives in the process. I rejected working in the military era. They offered me various appointments, but I turned them down.” Mr. Abubakar appealed to APC members nationwide to support any APC candidate that would clinch the ticket of the party’s presidential flag bearer to contest with the Peoples Democratic Party, PDP. Speaking on governance in Plateau state, the APC presidential aspirant called on the Plateau electorate to change the fortune of the state by voting out PDP. The event was brief as the APC Presidential aspirant revealed he was rushing to Abuja to be screened on Tuesday. http://www.premiumtimesng.com/news/top-news/172229-im-qualified-lead-nigeria-atiku.html |

Many persons are feared killed in Maiduguri, the Borno State capital, Monday after two explosions went off at the Maiduguri main market, where two suicide bombers last week detonated deadly explosives, killing themselves and several other people. The explosions sounded almost one after the other at about 11:20 am. A witness, Abba Ibrahim, who works as a security guard at a government hospital near the market, told journalists that the thunderous blasts caused several traders to scamper to safety. “As it is now, people are running for dear lives, so one cannot confirm to you the extent of damage, but the two blasts we just heard were too loud that it could cause more damage than the ones of last week,” he said. A trader, Dauda Bala, who spoke with journalists on phone said, “The security and other aid workers are trying to evacuate the dead and injured persons from the scene of the explosion…I can’t say how many were killed or injured but I have seen very many victims dripping with blood, others with parts of their bodies dismembered by the blasts”. Another witness at the market, who gave his name as Mallam Bashir, said the explosions were caused by two suspected female suicide bombers. “The explosions occurred at the area where fowls are being sold inside the market, very close to the First Bank branch. Those close enough to the place said it was two girls that came into the market with the bomb,” said Mr. Bashir, a used cloth vendor. The spokesperson of the Borno State Command of the Nigeria Police, Gideon Jubrin, confirmed the incident but said details of the incidents were still sketchy. “Of course we heard the explosions somewhere in town but it will be too early now to say what actually happened and what damage was caused by the explosion until much later,” he said. http://www.premiumtimesng.com/news/172169-another-twin-blast-rocks-maiduguri-market-dozens-feared-killed.html |

Pope Francis prayed on Saturday on the second day of his visit to Turkey alongside a senior Islamic cleric in Istanbul’s blue mosque. The blue mosque, known officially as the Sultanahmet Mosque, opened in 1616 and is the most famous in Turkey. Its popular name was a reference to the fine blue Iznik tiles in its main prayer room. The Vatican City spokesperson described it as a gesture of inter-religious harmony and a joint “moment of silent adoration” of God. Pope Francis took off his shoes as he entered the huge mosque before bowing his head in prayer for several minutes, facing Mecca and standing next to Istanbul’s Grand Mufti Rahmi Yaran. A similar act by his predecessor Pope Benedict in 2006 drew criticism from conservative Catholics and some Muslims. Halil Cil, 24, a hospital worker from Istanbul, said there was need to show respect for each other’s beliefs. He said God willing the pope’s visit would help in this respect. “We want to practice our religion in peace, as we want people to understand Islam,” he said. “More so we don’t want war. Islam is a religion of peace. Hundreds of people, many of them tourists, watched from behind police barriers as the pope then walked to the nearby Aya Sofya museum, once the Christian church Hagia Sophia. A group of school children waving Turkish and Vatican flags chanted “Long live Pope Francis” in Italian as the Muslim call to prayer rang out across the Sultanahmet square, the heart of Istanbul’s historic quarter. Pope would later in the day, celebrate Mass at the Catholic Cathedral of the Holy Spirit and then meet the leader of the Orthodox Church, Bartholomew. Discussions at Bartholomew are expected to focus on healing the schism in the Christian Church in 1054 that divided Rome and Constantinople. Islamic State insurgents have captured swathes of neighbouring Syria and Iraq, persecuting and killing Shi’ite Muslims, Christians and others who do not share their ultra-radical brand of Sunni Islam. http://www.premiumtimesng.com/foreign/172093-pope-francis-joins-islamic-cleric-pray-mosque.html |
President Goodluck Jonathan has expressed regrets at his inability to have a South West politician as Speaker of the House of Representatives in 2011. Speaking on Friday at the Yoruba Unity Summit themed: ‘National Development: Wither the Yoruba,’at the Obafemi Awolowo University, Ile-Ife, Mr. Jonathan attributed his failure to the selfishness of some Yoruba leaders. In 2011, Aminu Tambuwal, who is from the Northwest, had defeated Mulikat Akande, a Yoruba from the South West, to emerge the House Speaker. President Jonathan said he is still suffering from that decision by the Lower House. “One of the problems I faced in the National Assembly is that I felt the right thing should be done because our party, the PDP, has a formula,” said Mr. Jonathan, who was the special guest of honour at the event. “We have six geo-political zones in the country and when the President emerges from one of the geo-political zones, the Vice-President emerges from another geo-political zone, the rest core offices, the Senate President, the Speaker, Secretary to Federal Government, the chairman of the party must come from different geo-political zones. “The idea is that, whenever we are distributing board positions and some of these appointments, whenever we are appointing ministers, all these people sit to take decisions. In that case we want all the geo-political zones to be in the inner caucus that take critical decisions. “The last time, it was difficult for me because I insisted that the Southwest must get the Speaker. Of course, I couldn’t go through with it because some of us within the Southwest didn’t want it, based on some personal reasons. I am still suffering from that till today.” President Jonathan said that this time around, the party would work collectively to ensure that the South West gets whatever is zoned to them. “People should not rob it from us.” Mr. Jonathan said that the South-West play a huge role in Nigeria’s economy, noting that Lagos and Ogun States alone control 55 percent of the economy. He added that the contribution of the two states is a reason he is committed to providing them with infrastructure such as electricity to help boost the economy. “With unity, we can go to the moon. The Yoruba will not be left behind,” he added. The President also said that there are some recommendations from the just-concluded national conference he would not implement immediately to avoid desperate politicians who are “even ready to kill” from giving it a partisan colouration. In his speech, Ayo Fayose, the Ekiti State governor, advised Mr. Jonathan to always ignore the criticisms of former President Olusegun Obasanjo, adding that the retired Army General will never support his re-election bid. “You know it more than you know me. He will never want a man with an independent mind. Mr. President, you have refused to tread the path of unconstitutionality,” Mr. Fayose said. “You have refused to level Borno and other states like he levelled Odi. You have taken your time to respect human lives by not committing crimes against humanity. He won’t like that. “And, Your Excellency, the more you try to curry (favour of) Obasanjo, the more he will continue to despise you. “If you continue to curry him, we are not going to curry him. He doesn’t like people that give him respect. I plead with Your Excellency. Your second term has been concluded in heaven. Fear not.” The Ekiti governor challenged Mr. Obasanjo to explain the N50 million shared during the third term agenda, adding that he lacked the moral authority to speak against corruption. “I earned less than N300, 000 as governor of Ekiti State during my first coming. Your Excellency, the donation of N10 million to Obasanjo Library, what do you call that? That is corruption,” Mr. Fayose said. “Go and look for the Code of Conduct, the forms filled by President Obasanjo and his wealth today. We knew when he came back from prison. We knew the situation, we knew his wealth when he came out. “If you don’t speak each time Obasanjo speaks in the papers, we must reply him. When people talk and we are addressing you here, that is not the issue. If he talks again, we will give him an answer. “You are not supposed to reply him. You are a complete gentlemen. Decorum is part of business. We are telling you again, the moment he says the next one, we will engage him. This is not a country where after serving your own tenure, what you cannot take, you are giving it to others.” http://www.premiumtimesng.com/news/headlines/172091-im-still-suffering-failing-stop-tambuwal-becoming-speaker-2011-jonathan.html |
