NaMeAboki: Yes indeed; in fact this is a very good opportunity for them come out and to assert their legally backed professional autonomy after years of marginalisation and domination by medical doctors - it is very ironic that NMA is the one now making this call, giving its role in the subjugation of medical laboratory scientists. what do you mean subjugation of Medical scientists? this a period that everyone should unite irrespective of differences, be it political or whatever but u are here spewing thrash. |

Politics › Re: South West Development Commission Bill Causes Uproar At The Senate by Freddonance(m): 10:42pm On Mar 04, 2020 |
emkz: Eventually, Nigeria shall develop along regional lines. Where one region currently contributes the bulk of government earnings is meaningless in the long run and ballooning population.
Niger-Delta sells oil which proceeds can be used to buy food from the North and North-Central. The South-West is the gateway of foreign goods influx into the country = taxes and levies/duties on imports. Not to forget cocoa which can be exported to Belgium and Switzerland. Boasting of a sizeable population, people can also be taxed to raise revenue. The South-East shall be the manufacturing hub and commercial nerve of a regionalized Nigeria. Each region federates itself, have its own police, enforces its own laws and even conduct its own elections. We scrap the Senate and have three representatives from each region to meet twice a month to legislate on matters of common interests. Each region contributes 32% to a central government to oversee immigration matters, customs, national police, regional regulation, Supreme Court, army, national infrastructure, common examinations, currency and stock market.
That way, development is closer to the people. As it is now, I don't know my LG chairman, or state and federal representative. But Fulani herdsmen rioting is Buhari's fault, whereas the governor should be held responsible.
PS: Regional heads chosen by the people elect one of themselves or a neutral person as Chairman who oversees the country (and represent us in international meetings) with the regional heads as vice-chairmen overseeing the regions. Regions can have 1000 members in their regional assemblies, it is their business so long as they can pay them. We need a lean center. Nigeria is too big and heterogeneous to be centrally managed or policed. Best comment in a long while |

Health › Re: 300 Medical Consultants Withdraw Services From UCH, University Of Ibadan by Freddonance(m): 4:47pm On Feb 27, 2020 |
SctDonald: ...The only mistake NUC did is the forcing of the consultants to obtain PhD.. You can't send them back to something that is less than what they have.. I think, what need to be done is to scrutinized the system properly because many or some of them who aren't gotten to that level are lecturing clinical classes..That is what NUC is also trying to purge off from the system.. And don't tell me consultants don't lecture basic medicine courses to medical students.., 60% of my lecturers at UNN, college of medicine are consultants, especially courses like Anatomy, embryology, Histology, Physiology.. And most of them do say it in class that year to us that we have chosen one of the best career path... Some surgeons are of the opinion that anatomy classes should not be left for anatomist alone as they bombard students with much anatomy than is necessary in real clinical practice; that more emphasis should be on clinical application on the anatomic structure. maybe that's the reason you see some of them lecturing anatomy |
Health › Re: 300 Medical Consultants Withdraw Services From UCH, University Of Ibadan by Freddonance(m): 4:30pm On Feb 27, 2020 |
SctDonald: ...your problem is that you don't know the true definition of hatred or envy.., if you do,, you wouldn't have typed those words... In clinical classes, 400 level to 600 level.., you don't need Anatomists or physiologist to lecture them. What you need is a man who have defined his path in any of the branches of medicine.. What NUC is trying to do, is if you want to become O&G lecturer, you should move through that line and become a prof...,but if you want to practice your O&G,follow that path and get to any level you want to but keep to either lecturing or practice... This will help reduce founding, and capture those who have been scamming FG.. Since they consider FG irrelevant to their practice, they've withdrawn their services in the university. let's now see how Nigeria will produce doctors from now on they NUC refuse to meet their demands. You think clinical lecturers lecture in the classroom most of the time? No single lecturer spends more than 2hrs in a lecturer room in the hospital (except he has outstanding lectures). The bulk of the lectures happen in ward rounds (where he can spend 5-8hrs teaching students), in the theater, in the clinics where students can spend as much as 9hrs or even more with him. so what are you saying? |
Health › Re: 300 Medical Consultants Withdraw Services From UCH, University Of Ibadan by Freddonance(m): 4:06pm On Feb 27, 2020 |
SctDonald: ..Academics is different from clinical practice. What NUC is trying to do is to separate them. If you want to go into academics, then after your MBBS program.. Msc, PhD, and prof.. But if you want to go into clinical practice, then follow the normal path..,and not combining the two.. More so, NUC is trying hinder them from having multiple or at dual jobs in federal institutions.. For instance, a consultant after working for some hours in hospital, will rush to class to lecture....If this is done, it will create room for government to absorbed those that studied courses like pure Anatomy, Physiology,... etc to lecture those courses to medical students....This is what those consultants saw, and decided to embark on strike.. This might affect their salary... It's obvious you don't really know what is obtainable yet arguing. medical undergraduate program is divided into two. 1 Basic medicine 2. clinical medicine. only Consultants teach medical students in their clinical years. in basic medicine, u can have a combination of anatomist, physiologist, biochemists & doctors who decided to go through Msc, PhD. while Doctors in basic medicine are required to go through the Msc program & PhD, their clinical counterparts are consultants who have met the criteria to be one. What we are saying is that u don't force dis consultants to get PhD cos the residency program they went through is higher than PhD & they have much knowledge then their PhD counterparts in the profession. It is easier to get a PhD than it is to be a consultant. |

CSTR2: As an undergraduate student, I was selected to work with a lecturer of mine who was applying for doctorate on a ptdf funded project.
The project was about building a feasible reactor that can covert common sawdust to usable liquid fuel.
It was successful, and the fuel was 90% chemically and physically comparable to common diesel fuel.
That is innovation that only a doctorate will force out of you.
The project is now a property of the federal government. where is this work documented? which journal was it published? I asked for reference too. such ingenuity & yet wasn't published anywhere? |
Health › Re: 300 Medical Consultants Withdraw Services From UCH, University Of Ibadan by Freddonance(m): 2:48pm On Feb 27, 2020 |
CSTR2: Doctors in the other parts of the world can design ingenious biomedical systems. They make huge money from patents which they sell to big biomedical companies.
In Nigeria, you have a consultant of Cardiology that cannot design an artificial heart because they don't have the required doctoral training in research and innovation.
What are you teaching? Copy and paste? Can you tell us what chemical engineers have inverted in Nigeria with reference since you claim to be one. pls |

Health › Re: Doctors To Embark On Nationwide Strike Over NUC’s PhD Directive by Freddonance(m): 12:50pm On Feb 17, 2020 |
CSTR2: Specialising in epidemiology is exactly what I am looking for. That is what will make them qualified to impact knowledge to students. That's why you are being told you don't know the scope of residency training. Residency has part 1 & part 2. Part2 is a specialist Training. So a community health physician by passing the part 2 exams in epidemiology is already a specialist in epidemiology |
Health › Re: Doctors To Embark On Nationwide Strike Over NUC’s PhD Directive by Freddonance(m): 12:46pm On Feb 17, 2020 |
emapeteum: In the first instance, physicians were not supposed to go with the title Doctor. The title is purely academic with the highest academic qualification to teach. Equating residency to Ph.D. is laughable. Quite sad that most physicians who are Professors in Nigerian Universities are not Ph.D. holders. Correcting an error that has been the norm by NUC is not out of place and NMA should stop this blackmailing behavior. Whoever wants to criticize this should check history, please. Does that mean the physicians in other countries aside Nigeria all have PhDs for them to earn the title Doctor? |
Health › Re: Doctors To Embark On Nationwide Strike Over NUC’s PhD Directive by Freddonance(m): 12:43pm On Feb 17, 2020 |
CSTR2: Well, it can be streamlined.
Pure medical courses like Obstetrics and Gynaecology, Dentistry, opthamology, should be based on medical experience. Which means consultant doctors should have the required professional experience to impact knowledge.
But applied scientific courses like community health, pathology and pharmacology, medical biochemistry e.t.c should be taught by specialists. And those people should have a PhD. There is a residency program for pathology. |
Health › Re: Doctors To Embark On Nationwide Strike Over NUC’s PhD Directive by Freddonance(m): 12:40pm On Feb 17, 2020 |
CSTR2: There is no way a medical doctor teaching community health knows better than a scientist with a doctorate in epidemiology on how disease is spread. Community health also have residency training. Hope you know that? & there is no way u can compare a consultant community health physician with a scientist who major in public health. some community health physicians also specialize in epidemiology, so what are you saying? |
