Friday, February 6, 2015 Ice Prince, MI A blogger got more than he bargained for on Instagram lately when he dared to make a comparison between Chocolate City's Ice Prince (real name, Panshak Zamani) and label mate, Jude Abaga ( aka MI). The artistes, who have both won some prestigious music awards on the side, proved they were not the kind of rappers that could be easily swayed against each other by mere praise-singing. Ice Prince was the first to respond to Igwe's review of his latest hit titled 'Trash Can' and his subtle attempt to compare the works of both artistes. Writing on Instagram, he pointedly asked the blogger to stop comparing him and MI. Noting that he was not trying to be greater than MI, he told Igwe that a stronger bond existed between him and the rapper that was deeper than music. Ice Prince added, "To everyone else that cares to know, I can never compete with MI. It's deeper than music. Same parents or not, MI is blood. And for the record, MI is one greatest rap musician to come out of this side. I am who I am because I was brought up by the greatest." The response was well aimed, no doubt and MI himself was so touched by Ice Prince's humility and modesty that he could not help but fire back at the blogger. Also on Instagram, MI wrote, " Everybody knows Noble Igwe is my friend, but Ice Prince is my brother. And I reject any entertainment culture that consistently tries to put us against each other or rate our creativity without credibility or objectivity. We'd rather tear down than build each other and I don't agree with that. Family over everything!" The responses from the artistes may seem like a storm in a tea cup to some music lovers. All the same, others see it as a demonstration of the team spirit that exists among artistes on their records label. |
The Senior Special Assistant to the President on Public Affairs, Dr. Doyin Okupe, in this interview with OLALEKAN ADETAYO, reacts to some of the criticisms trailing President Goodluck Jonathan and gives reasons why he deserves a second term Despite the achievements President Goodluck Jonathan claims to have made, what will you say is responsible for the general perception that this government has performed below expectation? I like it that you used the word perception. There is a negative sinister perception created by the opposition. I will tell you how. The opposition has a tremendous influence on Nigerian media and therefore, most of these achievements are suppressed from coming to public glare. The second one is that achievements and good news do not make news but when Boko Haram keeps bombing and killing, that is the news. I have looked at newspapers' headlines for one year, 75 per cent of headlines are on Boko Haram. It doesn't matter even if you say that the President had just gone to commission an industry somewhere but when you say 285 killed in Monduga, Borno State, that is what people will remember. Insurgency has been overplayed to the extent that it has overshadowed the laudable achievements of this administration and it is deliberate. I know for a fact that the issue of Boko Haram was designed and executed from the beginning to malign this administration. There was Boko Haram before this administration, but the evil people in the society who felt there was no way they could remove the administration saw an opportunity and they encouraged it one way or the other to the extent that we never had rest in the last two to three years. Do you exercise any fear of possible post-election violence in the country? That question should go to APC people. They are the ones that are identified with violence and also canvass for violence and perpetrate violence. There is no doubt about it, they have said it before and they have made it happen. We have nothing to do with violence. We win all the time, we are going to win again. We just pray that when we win, people will accept it readily and not create violence as they did in 2011. Many people who suffered the 2011 violence have not recovered from it. One of the achievements being pointed to by this administration is the unbundling of the Power Holding Company of Nigeria, why is it that Nigerians still do not have electricity? The unbundling of the PHCN is a major event. It took 15 years and finally it took the courage, tenacity and commitment of President Jonathan to see it through. Without the unbundling of the PHCN, we will be a non-starter in terms of power generation. Government cannot provide what is required to provide Nigerians' electricity needs. Nigerians today need 50,000MW. We are looking at about $40bn to $50b, that is multiple trillions in naira. All we have in our capital vote in a year is about N1tr, where will we get that kind of money from? So we have to break down the power infrastructure so as to encourage foreign direct investors to come and invest and take it over just like the telecommunications. Don't you think the issue of the missing Chibok girls has affected the political fortune of the President? It is not just Chibok girls; everything that has to do with this insurgency has affected the political fortune of the President. The good news however is that in spite of it all, this administration has verifiable and concrete achievements that nobody can argue about. How do you react to the claim by the opposition that the President lacks the capacity to fight Boko Haram? It is only the mentally derailed that will say that. Because there is insurgency here, then the government is not doing well. It is nonsense talk. It is absolute nonsense talk. Insurgency is not a Nigerian affair. How much is our national budget? About N4tr. How much is that in dollars? Is that not $2b? That is not up to what America gives to Egypt on a yearly basis. It is only foolish peopl |
undefined Pressure mounted by President Goodluck Jonathan's loyalists and service chiefs on the Independent National Electoral Commission led to the postponement of the 2015 general elections, SUNDAY PUNCHhas learnt. The polls were billed for February 14 (presidential and National Assembly) and February 28 (governorship and House of Assembly). Jonathan, candidate of the Peoples Democratic Party, is contesting against retired Gen. Muhammadu Buhari of the All Progressive Congress and 12 other candidates at the presidential poll. Those who pushed for the postponement, despite the opposition from the All Progressives Congress and many Nigerians, include the Presidency; the Peoples Democratic Party Jonathan's loyalists; the National Security Adviser, Colonel Sambo Dasuki; the Chiefs of Defence, Army, Naval and Air Staff, among others. Two weeks ago, Dasuki, while speaking at a forum at the Chatham House in London, asked INEC to postpone the elections, saying the shift would allow for proper preparations and distribution of PVCs by the electoral body. In an apparent reaction to Dasuki's call, the United States had on January 25, 2015, advised Nigeria against postponing the elections. The US Secretary of State, Mr. John Kerry, gave the advice after he met with Jonathan and Buhari. Kerry urged the Federal Government not to postpone the elections as canvassed by Dasuki. Army Chief, Minimah However, the military chiefs wrote to Jega, informing him of the security implication of holding the elections in February as earlier scheduled. This, it was learnt, what part of what influenced shifting of the polls. Before the INEC chairman announced the new dates for the elections, the commission had insisted that the presidential and National Assembly elections be held on February 14, while the governorship and states House of Assembly election be held two weeks later. Jega, however, changed the dates of the elections at a press conference he addressed at the commission's headquarters in Abuja on Saturday. He repeatedly held the NSA and security chiefs responsible for the shift. The press conference came up after he met with representatives of all registered political parties. Jega was said to have on Saturday told the leaders of the parties, his officers and the civil society groups that the commission was ready for the election as planned, but that he was worried because of the claim by the security agencies that they would not be able to protect members of the staff of the commission and the electorates. Sixteen political parties led by the ruling Peoples Democratic Party were said to have favoured the shifting of the elections, while nine others led by the opposition All Progressives Congress were against the move. Jega also had a marathon meeting with the Resident Electoral Commissioners of all the 36 states and the Federal Capital Territory, Abuja. Naval Chief, Jibrin At the meetings, Jega was said to have told the attendees that he had received a letter from service chiefs advising that he should postpone the general elections on the grounds that the security agencies were engaged in a renewed battle against insurgency in the North-East. This, they claimed, would require their full concentration. In the letter, it was gathered that the security agencies were demanding a rescheduling of elections by, at least, six weeks. He also told the leaders of the political parties and the Resident Electoral Commissioners that he received a letter on Wednesday from the NSA, informing him that it would be difficult for the security agencies to protect the electorates during the election. The Council of State had on Thursday rose from a seven-hour meeting, advising the INEC to conduct the elections. Jega was quoted to have told the council that the commission was ready for the conduct of the election but the military chiefs were quoted to have said they could not guarantee the security of electoral officers, materials and the electorate should the commission |
