Part of the subsidy removed on fuel is that which involved the cost of transporting fuel from its point of lifting to the farthest location inland.

The FG subsidy regime ensured that the cost of fuel in Lagos was the same in Sokoto.

The only existing subsidy the FG pays is to GENCOs to produce energy as GENCOs are struggling over high cost of LNG.

This has been done on the past before and that was what Buhari and Emefiele were hedging on for the Dangote refinery to come on-stream before implementing the naira-for-crude deal. So is it the same NNPC he is going to revive their moribund refineries to begin producing refined fuels ?

You should also factor that 400,000 barrels of crude from JVC operations are allocated by the Federal govt for local refining to which Dangote is the major buyer of such at prevailing market prices.

Will FG now deny Dangote refinery and then gift NNPC the 400,000 barrels for free so they can produce refined products at a fraction of the cost at a loss to the refinery which the FG is expected to cover only for the discounted fuel to find its way across the border to neighbouring countries to be sold at a much higher profit?

And when NNPC products are not supplying the market owing to diversion and Dangote is forced to import crude from overseas, you will expect Dangote to sell at NNPC subsidized rate only for Dangote stock to find its way across the border .

This is pure retardation of the highest order .

The Federal and state govts will become bankrupt over night if this policy is announced because the increased allocation to states comes from money saved from sustaining this wasteful subsidy that only benefited smugglers and NNPC staff.

The new minimum wage states have implemented is only possible due to savings made from subsidy removal.

How will the states pay salaries ?

What of existing liabilities and obligations to banks that state govts entered into to carry out projects based on their new financial status?

How will they pay staff salaries and meet their obligations to contractors and financial institutions ?

Instead of campaigning on the grounds of seeing to the strengthening of the naira to improve purchasing power , he is talking of returning subsidy


No state governor will ever support that rubbish because it will see to a scenario where states will require federal bailouts to meet their obligations .

You are going to see a return to long queues at filling stations , scarcity regime, fuel being diverted to neighbouring countries which only benefit the smugglers and a scenario of serious insolvency for both federal and state governments not able to even pay electricity bill talk more of salaries of staff.

Anyone thinking Atiku or any other politician can lie brazenly on returning fuel subsidy to garner votes is delusional.

If Atiku is even honest (for once) that he will return subsidy, has he even considered that no sitting state governor will be in support of such ?

Their allocations will only plummet and those ones who have taken on projects based on their expected monthly allocations will not be able to complete it.

There are also loan obligations by states based on this current allocation made only possible by fuel subsidy removal.

States will not only be able to complete existing projects but also their loan obligations.

What of the new wage bills ?

How will both the state and federal govts meet their new obligations to staff while still paying subsidy ?

There's no way in hell freezing over that subsidy can be restarted without heading the country straight to bankruptcy.

A true federation will entail that every federating unit contributes to the centre and not be a liability to other federating states.

If your state can not pay it's workforce and provide basic public services and amenities without federal intervention, then you don't have a federal system but mere provincial govts .

This is why we keep hammering it on your heads the need to restructure and devolve powers from the centre back to the states.

A true federal system will not see Abia getting 700% from VAT revenue collected and distributed by the Federal govt .

A true federal system will not see Oil producing states being short-changed into collecting only a paltry 13% of oil revenue generated from their states.

A true federal system will see states owning up to their responsibility of providing and maintaining a police force of their own without relying on Federal govt to provide internal policing.

Fuel subsidy explained

Fuel subsidy means the government paying part of the fuel price for her citizens per litre.

Right now, it cost 1300 naira to buy a litre of fuel at the fuel station. Government will determine how much they want the citizens to pay to reduce their financial weight. The government then pays the balance.

Let's assume the government wants the citizens to pay 600 naira per litre, then the government will pay the balance of 700 naira.

Challenges and prospects

The greatest challenge of paying fuel subsidy isn't the money needed to pay for it but the system that will ensure the payment is corruption free and that the fuel gets to the citizens and not exported outside the country.


Funding fuel subsidy

Funding fuel subsidy will never be a challenge to a prudent government. The Tinubu government sees funding fuel subsidy as a challenge because it is a wasteful government.

A government that sees the comfort of the president and his associates as superior to the comfort of the citizens who elected him to lead them into comfort and better life can never sacrifice a penny to his citizens.

Fuel subsidy delivery

The delivery of paid fuel subsidy is easier now than it was years ago with the entrance of Dangote into the fuel business.

Dangote has fuel stations that registered under his cooperation. He can easily be paid the fuel subsidy and deliver directly to Nigerians.

NNPCL or whatever is their new name is a rival to Dangote in the Down stream sector. They have their own customers also. The government can pay them directly and they have the fuel deliver to Nigerian end users.


Blocking corruption

If Dangote and NNPCL are the only players in this game. They will be held accountable if any of their agents is caught transporting fuel outside the country.

Government should go into agreement with them to pay 10 trucks for 1 truck caught trying to transport fuel outside the country and all the players in the know going to prison.

Government should put trustworthy people at the borders of concern who should be changed a fortnight without notice and never to return to that station for at least a year period.

Fuel subsidy return if managed well will be the biggest blessing to Nigerian economy.

Go and ask your governor what he is doing with their share of the money saved from removal of subsidy.

So FG should be giving your moriboumd and corrupt states money monthly and still come and be subsidizing fuel for you.

I believe Katsina state govt operates a subsidy transport scheme with their Katsina state transport service.

Although the state transport service is mostly for inter state and intra state movement .

This is a novel idea brought by Bruce and every serious governor committed to improving the welfare of its citizens can key into this.

I also will suggest that since Bruce is proposing for intra city movement, states should consider investing in EV buses.

The Chinese are out producing EVs that outperform everyone else at a fraction of the cost of a typical western EV.

I will suggest that instead of EV buses, the state should look into purchasing hybrid EVs that have an internal fuel generator to charge the buses.

States like Lagos should do away with those diesel powered buses for Chinese EV self charging hybrid buses to replace their current fleet of diesel powered buses.
