From JULIANA TAIWO-OBALONYE, Abuja and Charles Adegbite, Ado-Ekiti President Goodluck Jonathan has pleaded with the Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU) to stop being adamant over their protracted strike and return to classrooms for the sake of the students who, he said, were the worst hit by the industrial action. He made the appeal when he commissioned the three-storey College of Engineering Complex in the Afe Babalola University, Ado-Ekiti (ABUAD), Ekiti State, named after him. Jonathan has also cautioned the union not to abuse the freedom of association and the right of workers to go on strike or even use it to the detriment of the nation, just as he noted that whatever the grievances the striking workers have, keeping students out of school for four months is quite unpatriotic. He said, “I once again appeal to the entire membership of ASUU to pause and ponder on the adverse effect of their action on the future of the vibrant youths of this great nation. The collective destiny of tens of thousands of tomorrow’s leaders should not be held hostage to vagaries of labour disputes. As long as we are humans, as long as we are a developing society, this labour dispute must come up. “I believe that labour has the right to go on strike, but in that strike, any action taken must be built on patriotic zeal. In as much as you can go on strike, you must be patriotic to our country. No matter how and what you feel about Mr. President and the federal government, I plead with ASUU that for the sake of our students, they should resume classes.” The President noted that while four months would have been enough for the striking academics to drive home their point on their grievances against government, keeping the students beyond four months which is equal to a whole semester raises suspicion of an ulterior motive on the part of the union. He said: “If it is a genuine strike, keeping students out of classrooms for almost four months, by that they have demonstrated to everybody that they have a case. And if the strike is motivated by some other interests, they have also achieved that by keeping students out of schools for more than a semester. “I always says that even in the developed societies, we hear about labour dispute and there is no society, even the most developed that has provided the facilities for every worker. Our security services, the Police, the Armed Forces, Navy, Air Force and paramilitary, intelligent services are also operating in an environment that is not the best. “If all of us should go on long strike because our environment is not optimum, then, definitely we can never get the Nigeria of our dream. So, let me use this unique opportunity that I am interfacing with our future leaders, our students, to plead with ASUU members to return to class.” President Jonathan promised that his administration will continue to work with all Nigerians to build a better country for all and future generation, maintaining that as long government had shown commitment to improving the qualities of infrastructure in the universities and the operating environment, ASUU should reconsider its stance. He argued further that if students of private universities could get their degrees within three and a half years as witnessed in ABUAD, “it is unacceptable that students of public institutions are kept for extra one or two years.” Congratulating the founder and President of ABUAD, Chief Afe Babalola (SAN) for building for the country such a magnificient citadel of learning, Jonathan said he was deeply humbled by the decision to name the College of Engineering of the institution building after him. source: http://sunnewsonline.com/new/cover/return-class-jonathan-begs-ASUU/ |

The Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU) again rejected the offer by the Presidency put forward by the Viice President Namadi Sambo yesterday at a meeting to resolve the almost three-month-old strike by the lecturers. Also, ASUU Ibadan zone made up of University of Ibadan, University of Lagos, Olabisi Onananjo University, University of Agriculture, Abeokuta, Lagos State University and Tai Solarin University of Education, Ijebu- Ode, at a zonal meeting yesterday, resolved to continue with the industrial action. The acting Zonal Coordinator, Ibadan Zone, Dr. Karo Ogbinaka said the strike entered its 88th day (yesterday), saying the action has crippled public universities. He said in spite of the spirited efforts of the union to revamp the rot in the system, the government remained adamant and intransigent in honouring the agreement it entered into with ASUU in 2009. “ASUU has demonstrated great commitment and patriotism since 2006 when the negotiation started and culminated in the 2009 agreement. It has allowed government to use its agencies to verify the claims of decrepit infrastructure in the university system. This resulted in the production of the Needs Assessment document of 2012,” Ogbinaka stated. According to him, the meeting of Tuesday, September 19 with the vice president was an indication that the Federal Government was merely paying lip service to education in the country and deceiving the public on its commitment to its transformation agenda. Ogbinaka, who is the branch chairman of ASUU UNILAG, assured Nigerians that it would not back-out in the struggle for the emancipation of the people by ensuring that government does what is right in the education sector. “Our appeal to all patriotic Nigerians is for them to support ASUU in this struggle to save our public education in Nigeria and secure the future of this great country,” he said. During the Ibadan zone meeting which took place at UNILAG, ASUU members resolved to continue with the almost three-month-old industrial action until government meets the demands of the union. Some of the branch chairmen at the meeting told Daily Sun that their various congresses, which held this week rejected offer put forward by the vice president, insisting on full implementation of the agreement. Acting ASUU Chairman of OOU, Dr. Tunde Odulanmi, ASUU UI branch Secretary, Dr. Deji Omole, told Daily Sun that their congresses rejected the outcome of the union’s meeting with Sambo and voted to continue with the strike. source: www.sunnewsonline.com/new/cover/again-ASUU-rejects-presidency-offer-says-strike-continues/ |

Hope of an early resolution of the strike embarked on by the public universities’ lecturers rises as the Vice-President Namadi Sambo met with the leadership of the Academic Staff Union of Universities in Abuja on Thursday. The meeting held behind closed doors had in attendance the supervising Minister of Education, Nyesom Wike and the Executive Secretary of National Universities Commission, Prof. Julius Okojie. The union was led by its National President, Dr. Nasir Faggae, and two former Presidents of ASUU; Dr. Dipo Fasina and Dr. Abdullahi Sule-Kano. Others at the meeting were the Vice- Chancellors of Bayero University Kano, Prof. Abdulrasheed Abubakar; Prof. Isaac Adewole of the University of Ibadan; and Prof. Muhammed Hamisu of the Abubakar Tafawa Balewa University, Bauchi. It was however uncertain if yesterday’s discussion was fruitful as the two parties did not disclose the outcome of the meeting which lasted for two hours to journalists. Fagge, however, told State House Correspondents that the union would make its position known after the National Executive Council meeting. Wike assured Nigerians that students would soon return to school as government was ready to make sure all the contending issues were resolved as soon as possible. But a source at the meeting, who pleaded anonymity, however, told one of our correspondents that going by the new offers made by the Federal Government, the strike might be called off within the next two weeks. This, the source said, was because the Federal Government had agreed to inject fund to revitalize the university system. “The meeting went well, the vice-president made some new offers that were different from what was on ground before. For instance, the Federal Government had agreed to start the injection of revitalization fund into the university system starting with N100bn this year and N150bn in 2014 and this will continue until the university system is solid enough to stand. The source, however, said that the ASUU team promised the vice-president that the union would make it decision on the strike known after its NEC meeting unconfirmed source said had been scheduled for Saturday.
