wenger's comment on Henry losing out on the European footballer of the year, (Balon d'or)

It is being reported that, once again, Thierry Henry has been overlooked as European Player of the Year.

Spanish and Italian press have suggested that the Balon d’Or for 2006 has gone to Italy defender Fabio Cannavaro. The Real Madrid defender has had an excellent 2006 but, according to Arsène Wenger, his protégé’s continual disappointment over major awards is baffling.

“If that's the case then congratulations to Cannavaro,” said the manager on Friday, “but for me there's only one candidate this year and that's Thierry Henry.

"He was the top goalscorer in England, the best player in England and the second-highest goalscorer in Europe behind Luca Toni.

"He played in the Champions League Final and the World Cup Final. He lost one on penalties and he lost the other in the last few minutes with 10 men.

"It's unfortunate and it's not right that he does not have the recognition.

"When you look at what this guy has achieved in his career as a player I can tell you there are some players in the Balon d'Or who have a lot to answer for when you compare them to Thierry Henry.

"For me the only one in contention with him was Samuel Eto'o, who won the Champions League and the Spanish Championship. He is the only one who could fight with Thierry this year.”

Thierry Henry has failed to make the final shortlist for this year's Fifa World Player of the Year award.

Three-time winner Zinedine Zidane, 2005 winner Ronaldinho and European Player of the year Fabio Cannavaro were named as the three remaining candidates.

But Arsenal striker Henry missed out despite being the only player to make it to the finals of both the Champions League and the World Cup last season.

The winner of the prestigious honour will be revealed on 18 December.

The award is voted for by the coach and captain of all 207 national teams, who each pick their top three players of the year.

Italy and Real Madrid defender Cannavaro will be confident of ending the year in style after picking up the Ballon D'Or award this week.

Meanwhile, Barcelona and Brazil forward Ronaldinho is once again a frontrunner after winning it for the last two years.

Zidane, who retired from football following his red card in the World Cup final last summer, could pick up the award for a fourth time, having claimed it in 2003, 2000 and 1998.

In the women's award category, USA's Kristine Lilly, Germany's Renate Lingor and Brazil international Marta have all been shortli
Politics › Re: Is Democracy Universally Beneficial? by gaby(m): 11:39am On Nov 29, 2006
Afam:
Democracy certainly is not universally beneficial and a few pointers will attest to this.

Democracy brought about the present leaderships in Iraq, Iran, Palestine, Lebanon, Russia, Afghanistan etc.

In South America (continent) a lot of leftist presidents are springing up and these people are democractically elected, not thorugh coups.

Even in the US, democracy as is practiced today seems to be giving room for a lot of things that are even immoral.

Gays and lesbians are asking for equal rights even when God created Adam and Eve and not Adam and Steve.

If democracy is exported to the middle east today, countries like Saudi Arabia will gladly shut their oil taps against the US and we all know what the consequences of such actions will be.

For the simple fact that people are different, democracy as practiced by one country should not be made universal and the recent push for such universal adoption has recorded unexpected scenarios with a free and fair election bringing a Hamas led government that clearly says they do not want Israel to exist, same with Iran where the present president won by basing his campaign on anti western propaganda as against the former president that was leaning towards the West.

In Nigeria today, democracy has destabilized well organised institutions that have survived thousands of years without problems. The Ibos naturally do not believe in kingship whereas the Hausas believe in kingships where a single person has a near total control over the people under him.

The "red indians" were living a happy life before the invaders came, killed, maimed and established themselves on another man's land. Not sure they were practicing democracy then but I assume they were happy and living in peace, at least Columbus recorded that as one of the things that shocked him when he stepped foot on their land.

It is best for countries to develop the best style of governance that suits them, not trying to import another person's way of life.

Democracy is just a game of numbers and has nothing to do with morality just as 90% of a group may decide to pass into law something that is bad and it becomes law because in democracy majority will always have their way while minority their say.
Afam thank you very much for your wonderful comment, couldnt have butressed it any further

Gaby,
Iraqis suffered under the authoritarian Bathist rule of Saddam! The problem in Iraq could have been avoided if Bush instesd if appointing a Viceroy for Iraq and gone on to put in place a national govern ment of Sunnis Shiites and Kurds! Then the crap they are faced now would not have been so!It's only a democracy that can give it's people the best lifestyles possible!
I challenge anyone to name a country where the rights of its citizens, their prosperity, hopes and aspirations are guaranteed in a non democratic system!
Lewa,

Thanks a lot for your comment, What i am simply calling democracy here my friend is the American Form democracy which comes from their desire to impose their way of life or governance on any country whilst forgetting to remember that Democracy to different countries and cultures could be different from taking on the American version of it to the letter,

Ok the Iraqis suffered gravely under Saddam's Baatist party and what are these same people going through today? Can you in anyway relate it to what they went through during Saddam's Regime?I bet you the U.S could have avoided what is going on now if only they had allowed these folks practice their own version of Democracy as opposed to imposing one on them in an Amserican way,

I challenge anyone to name a country where the rights of its citizens, their prosperity, hopes and aspirations are guaranteed in a non democratic system!

I challeng you to the quote above Lewa, countries such as U.K and U.S are guilty of some of the above too if not all even though it might be happening to a certain race or group of persons but still these are citizens of these same countries in a democratic setting,

And besides is Nigeria,Pakistan,Saudi Arabia, infact the (most of the middle eastern/arab/persian countries)are these not practicing democracies??

I'm sure going to modify my post later got to go now ,
Politics › Re: Is Democracy Universally Beneficial? by gaby(m): 8:33pm On Nov 28, 2006
Democracy is not universally beneficial and it is as simple as that because as country names are different so are their cultures, religions, and system of governance befitting them, you can't impose a strange system of government you choosed to call "DEMOCRACY" and tell a group of persons that is what they should adopt in governing themself because you see it as the best,

Iraq is the simplest of examples to how universally unbeneficial the type of democracy been referred to in here is not designed for all and sundry, Sadam's style of "democracy"because that is what he would call it,was suiting to the people, culture and religion,

Its a simple as that,

Here is the cold hard facts about America being the policeman of the world.

Nobody else has 40,000 or so Nuclear bombs. Whatever.

We have troops in 2/3rds of the world's countries.

America will never be taken down from the outside world, the rest of the world is too militarily weak.

@Reverend

Reverend:
One thing is for sure. Wherever America goes she bleeps up big time! Korea, Vietnam, Iraq, Iran, Afghanistan etc etc etc.
even Somalia

Reverend:
They may have the most advanced military hardware, but they definitely have an extremely poor understanding of what makes this World tick.
Their arrogancy wont make them understand the world is not all American

Reverend:
Maybe sometimes they go for noble and good hearted reasons, but they never take the time to understand the people on the ground.
They hardly ever go for any noble and good-hearted reasons, its always for bullying reason, imposition of their own beliefs or exploitation,

Reverend:
Things would be far better if they kept out of many of the World's trouble spots and they will never begin to understand that American values and democracy can not be applied or accepted by all Nations equally!
Exactly my point, Mind American business and allow everyother nation mind its own business

Reverend:
I for one am quite happy to see Arabs blow each other up. That is the positive side of the current conflict in the Middle East. Lets leave them to sort out their own problems. If thousands of them die in the process, that is their problem. Lets bring our boys home to safety.
Why would your boys have to leave now that they havent cleaned up the mess they started, was Iraq in this state of blowing ups and civil unrest before the invasions?

Reverend:
It is a kind of population control anyway. There are too many people on this planet, more than we can sustain. Just like in Africa where many Countries have constant famines, maybe we should not interfere. Maybe it is Gods way of controlling the population.
This is exactly how you folks want everyone to think American policing the world is "Ordained By your God"

Reverend:
I would love to see Saddam Hussein set free and left to deal with his own people in his own special way. They have been given the chance to live in a democratic and free society, but they are not capable it seems. Let them now take the consequences.
It is obvious that America Has no other option than to release Saddam Hussein whom most even Iraqis see as a hero now because he was able to hold the country and prevented what is happening now even without any multi-national or coalition forces, and besides the Iraqis never demanded or appealed for your style of democratic or free society,

Reverend:
I can not really name one Muslim Country where democracy can or is working. Arabs for example can only be controlled with an ruthless iron fist. If you step out of line you will be liquidated. That is what they understand the best, democracy is lost on them and thousands of our soldiers are losing their lives to try and introduce something which can never work. The West should have learned that by now and stopped trying to introduce their bubble gum democracy to these heathens. Leave them to kill each other in peace.
You are right here with me because even as less complicated a country Nigeria might seem i doubt the success of an American Styled Democracy,

Reverend:
The USA and the UK should police the West and other developed Countries. We should leave the rest too their fates.
If the U.S.A and the U.K police's other western countries, whos going to police the U.K and the U.S?

Reverend:
Let the weak wither and the fittest survive! That is nature after all lipsrsealed
What goes around comes around thats nature

I enjoyed your comment reverend

@Topic

Hell no America has no right whatsoever to police the world and its no divine duty, i wonder why religious inclination has to be a yard stick for proving to be a bully,

Divine from what auspicies, if it's divinely ordained by the God of the the Christians or he Bibile, why wouldnt the muslims or muslim countries not have the same divine ordination?

It is become become obvious that American Democracy is not meant for every country or people of the world and shouldnt be imposed or any one country as a model for good governance, what has happened to live and let live, I wonder why The U.S thinks they can successfully impose their model of democracy in the Middle-east if no sinister motive was intended, it is apparently obvious even to the blind that these are just a different people who's way of life and model of governance is different from what America preaches as the best form of Governance,

All these are borne out of sheer greed and arrogance and America's sworn enemies have simply refused to say no to the bullyings and are prepared to go to any lenght to prove that they will refuse to be cajoled into accepting a way of life that is contrary to their own ways,
