It should be: 'how much should each contribute for the up-keep of the family?' And i'd say, according to their individual financial capacity, based on their mutual understanding. There's nothing that stops a wife from also contributing to the family's needs, just as nothing stops the man from assisting the woman with some house chores. Family members should see themselves as a team.
