@ maximip:

Thanks for the advice. The main reason I'm into 3d games right now is because the tutorials were easy to find and learn from. When I first decided to jump to win32 programming, I could not find tutorials and at that time I didn't have a good internet connection to find any. I downloaded both SDL and the allegro library but could not get any book or tutorial to learn from plus I gained admission to school and had to concentrate on other things. Along the line, I stumbled on game engines and realized how took to them because of how easier they made things. They've taught me not only the basic ideas and concepts of both 2d and 3d but also certain techniques to go about structuring and implementing them. Nevertheless, I've realized that lack of knowledge on certain aspects of programming, mathematics, physics and others can hinder me, hence, I intend to strengthen my knowledge of this areas little by little. Alongside experimenting with game engines this holiday, I intend to do what I can to strengthen the above mentioned areas and hopefully become much better. Hopefully, I'll be able to apply what I learn from both areas to each of them.

@ world best:

Cool! now for a start, what kind of game shall we work on? action, shooter, puzzle, adventure, ? What will make people want to play it?

@ sweet pawn, maximip and world best:  cool. I've been posting a couple of things but they keep disappearing even though they appear in my last posts. check 'em out from my profile. Hopefully, this will show up.

EDIT: this showed up so I'm copying and pasting my previous posts below:

@ sweet pawn. I'm having my holiday by wednesday. Hoping for lots of assignments. cheers.

Cool!

Your words are spot on. The fact is Africans are suffering. We are suffering as a result of the combined consequences of colonization, imperialism, corruption, and ignorance. Everyone realizes this but all we do is complain and talk while leaving the task of correcting this issues to others. Your first comment about everybody talking was indeed true. It might even be motivation to do something.

The fact that Africans have fewer opportunities especially when it comes to tech is reason enough to do all we can to get more people involved. I started programming last year when my dad gave me his old laptop. I was 19 then but I wasn't bothered. I see it as a challenging and inspiring hobby. I believe there are Nigerians out there who are not really interested in the money but in the challenge and possibilities it involves. This is one of the reasons I like topics like this that involve collaborative projects and ideas. It creates opportunities to meet people and inspire each other. Moreover, newbies like me get to communicate with knowledgeable people and since this is the internet we're on, our ideas are preserved. Younger and curious minds will no doubt stumble upon these pages someday and may get inspired to do something. By starting now and facing the challenges, we make it easier for them thus eliminating the first problem.

You were also right about game design and graphics being obstacles to programmers. It's even more difficult for us Africans cuz few can afford the money for necessary apps like 3ds max not to talk of tutorials. For those who have, they have to find payment means since we have been branded negatively and paypal has banned the country. Anyways, thank goodness for open source and free stuff like blender. I'm currently looking for good and free tutorials to learn them now cuz my holiday starts Wednesday ( whoooooo ). You could try getting free models and stuff from the internet to mess with. You'll never know what game ideas might pop in at the sight of something. I think the programming section should sorta befriend the graphics section so we could collaborate on ideas.

You said you're now using xna. How is the learning curve. I've got the installation file but it quits because I ain't got visual studio. I use dev cpp. Last week, I tried Microsoft's dreamspark program for a free visual studio and they helped me verify my student status. The only problem is that it's a 2gig download and thats WOW for my internet connection. Could take a day or two. Could you tell me what tutorials or books helped you. Maybe we should have a newbie guide topic on nairaland with links to sites with good starting tutorials. I understand nairaland has some tutorials but programming is not a static field. Today, your code is great but tomorrow, all the main parts are deprecated. This is a frustrating problem. I brought black art of java game programming last year at about 3k only to find out most of the examples had deprecated parts. I decided to leave java then and move to c++. Luckily, I've just gotten a new ebook thats not too old but I can't tell till I download the latest java SDK. What kind of programs do you write now? The only thing I do aside gaming is learn web development. It seems an interesting field. I got bored with downloading and customizing scripts like joomla and others. Tryna to learn how stuff works.

@ world best: cool, looking forward to making some cool games. I'm don't have xna yet and I've got no knowledge of c#. Nevertheless, I'll do my best to contribute wherever I can. Game development is the same no matter the language we're using. We should list basic ideas to start with here or in a new post. I'll go looking for free models now. We could ask someone from the graphics section to help us with a personalized African character as the protagonist. Should we open a new thread to aid communication or should we continue here? How's your skills with blending animations, implementing jumps n stuff?

I'm suggesting a new thread instead of a project system for now cuz it saves us time getting people involved and coming together with ideas and game plan. We can implement the system when things start getting more interesting and feasible. What ya say? Anyways, I'M IN!!!!!

Hey sweet pawn, long time! Submitted the assignment you gave me ages ago but no reply. Whats been up? I tried fast forwarding to c++ win32 but could not find any tutorials or book. Using free game engines instead. I second your idea for free games cuz I think that is the way indies should start. It doesn't have to be full complete games. Fun and entertaining demos could be the trick. Looking forward to some fun games.

As for Maximip, You think say e easy? Is it everyone that has access to 24/7 electricity? Money for books to learn or tuition? Internet connection? Just last june when I started learning programming, I know how much trouble I went through before I could download my first java SDK. Not to talk of finding tutorials. I had to download stuffs through my phone and I know how many times I've used MTN's 500 naira dataplan and still could not find anything cuz it was damn slow. Thankfully, nowadays, things are easier for me. If you happen to have anything to aid our success, bring it instead of posting doubts and pessimistic comments. Jor ooo. See the big fonts wey you even use. kai.

I could make something really easy to ease your doubts using 3d game studio. Only thing is, my models are from projects from which I learnt and not mine. The free version of the engine also doesn't support shaders which are about one of the most important things in todays 3d games.

Instead of being pessimistic, how about inspiring us? No let me write bot wey go wound you o. Abeg modify your post and reduce the font.

I posted some tips earlier before my battery died and was about to continue but I can't find my post. Damn, ya killed my spirit.

Anyone around unilag or Ajah? Let's get together with ideas. I've got about 3 free versions of game engines lying around. I got pretty comfortable with one of 'em before I realized it's free version wasn't offering me much. Luckily, my exams will be over by wednesday. Four months away from economics. Four months of coding.

Good luck, people. Hoping to see some cool stuff soon.

Ah peeps, forgive me. Just realized the question is about swags and not lyrics or stuff.
My answer: Young Money hands down. When it comes to swag, no other artist has it like lil wayne(4 now) so he alone destroys mo hits. Simple question.
Music/RadioRe: Young Money Vs Mo'hits: Who's Hotter? by gameaddict(m): 10:37am On Apr 15, 2010
First, when it comes to contemporary music, don't ever try to emulate anybody in everyday life. I was only talking about lil waynes crazy attitude. The guy cares little, at least that what he expresses.
Secondly, who is D prince or whatever you called him? As for me, there's only two artists in each group. Lil wayne and Drake 4 YM, D'banj and WC 4 MH. The rest are just there to complete groups. Exempting don jazzy of course, the guy dey on him own levels.

Yeah, sony never said but gaming thrives on experience. I still play snes, gba, n64, ps1 and famicom games on my psp because few things can beat the experience of playing games like mario, no matter where you are. These games ran on consoles that represent the power of hardware and software during their time and did what they represented. The psp represents a new approach to the handheld experience and is targeted at everyone, not only gamers. This is great but first and foremost, it is a gaming device. As a gaming device, does it stand well on it's own with users? NO! It's more of a supporting device for the ps2 and ps3. The games it boasts usually have ps2 and ps3 versions which are usually far better and offer more engaging experience and I'm expected to go crazy about the cheap psp versions. Come to think of it, sony did cause me to believe the psp had the power of the ps2 with their release adverts but games that come close graphically are short as hell. The psp is just a greedy but sucessful attempt to enter the gaming/handheld market. Do you know the sales of other sony departments dropped because of the psp? For starters, the sales of sony's other mp3 players dropped and people have lost jobs. Why? Lack of foresight? Greed? I'm even sure those fat heads are going to milk every dollar from the gow 3 if it's really the last installment. When sales of god of war begins to drop and the excitement is dying, they'll just port it to other devices. Good business but gamers don't like that. Hope they don't. Why do I even care? I may use their devices but I hate them as hell. They'll pay for messing with Nigeria.

I think it's just fans designing concepts and hoping. The above pic is obviosly not doable cuz it won't fit in my pockets  grin

Truth is I ain't expecting any psp2 and I'm not hoping for one unless it can offer the same power as the PS3 or XBOX 360. I thought the original PSP had the full power of the PS2 whhen it came out but I was wrong and till date, I'm disappointed. It was supposed to be the PS2, only smaller. The current PSP's graphics dont exactly equal the ps2 even though you can intechange saved games and other data. Anyway. NICE CONCEPT BUT TOO BIG! I like the bottom. Hopefully, when rollable screens get perfected  tongue, it can be incorporated and my psp can be will be like a candle in my pocket. Like my idea?

Big lil wayne fan but I'll say mo hits. The question is who is better not who is richer. I can easily get to the root of whatever mo hits are expressing not just cuz they are Nigerians but because they are real. Artists in young money are kinda hard to comprehend. Tell me you understand lil wayne and I'll bust your head. Not talking about his lyrics alone but his behaviour. Though they got the music thing down- 'em foreign artists cuz they invented it- No stopping us naija. Lets go there, VISION 2020, BLINDNESS 2040, SHAKARA 2060, LIARS 20FINITY, okay, My mind slipped off but seriously, I love lil wayne and I'm digging tyga but Wande coal would be far ahead if we had U.S. living conditions in naija. BELIEVE ME, THINGS DEY HAPPEN!

@ cool2. I just researched metacrawler and guess what? It's classified under METASEARCH ENGINES and not SEARCH ENGINES! WIKIS are your friend. Do your research on what search engines are, the differences and the advantages and essence of metasearch.
Instead of claiming to be a search engine, the OP should concentrate on making his metasearch driven site more of what it is. How about configuring it to return results specific to africa? That is in line with the metasearch essence. Please OP, I'm not trying to put you down or anything like that. I just want you to make your site better and more defined. In fact, restructure your layout and fonts. Make it beautiful. Represent naija by explicitly defining what you are and where you are. Don't try to use deceptive adverts like your search engine label which has created this argument. And talking about adverts, why are there adverts on the front page. Is that the free hosting cache? I hope you can follow googles footsteps and become great cuz that would be a positive for Nigeria. Now first lesson on independence of a real search engine: NO ADS ON THE FRONT PAGE! Thats a really bad thing. Users don't like that. Build some trust first instead of asking us to advertise with you. Please make it better and keep it up.
ComputersRe: Comments raised here was when Wankel was in its old form by gameaddict(m): 12:48pm On Apr 14, 2010
@ cool2: Thanks for the info but don't you notice the big differences between the site you referred me to and wankel? The first thing I noticed after the sites name was 'search the search engines'. I'm guessing their aim is to make searching easier since results may be from all the search engines instead of one. Many things begin to develop from the above point. As for the op, he says he's created his own search engine. That is the main argument. His own search engine. Did yahoo claim they owned a search engine when the were using google's tools. Most portals with search capabilities like AOL even state where results come from before you search. THEY DONT SAY THEY OWN A SEARCH ENGINE UNLESS THEY OWN ONE! As for the metacrawler, they must have created a tool that enables them to configure how their site returns results from not one but many real search engines. Their advantage therefore is akin to killing many birds with one stone. Did OP do that? NO! All I get is google custom search. There's so many things I still don't understand but I know the difference between a search engine and a page. The metacrawler site though not a traditional search engine like bing or google is a great tool for users. Wankel? hell no. Sha, I'd love to be educated more. And who says you're legit cuz you're on google? Before the legit part, lets talk about being a search engine. Please state the differences between google, bing and wankel. Thats where we should start. Would Love your opinion. What makes Wankel a search engine? if it's a search engine, then it would be competing with them. Metacrawler isn't competing and thats a start. Though their tool is great if it works well. On my phone so I haven't tested them. Now lets talk about being a search engine cool2,

Cool tutorial. Got me some weeks of freedom and spent a whole day with it. The result was really great. Made me some cool stuff with 'em plugiins. When you get to the articles part, could you expantiate on it? I'd also like to know how to create sub pages with links to even more sub pages. It's for an idea I'm working on. THANKS.

Something is wrong with this guy. He hasn't created anything and his trying to become an ad provider aside starting his own verb. wankeling? Make u go wankel yourself, you funny o. It would have been a different matter entirely if you had used some open or closed source tools like spiders, crawlers and the like to create something worth calling your own. Instead, you create a page with a search box which returns results from google! All you have done is create a page! Anyone can create a page and use one of googles offerings to provide results. In fact, scroll down this page, type in the google custom search box and see the result. There's even options to either seach this site or google's own database. It appears you don't even have a database(maybe), thats why your page only searches google. Either that or you configured it that way.

I ain't trying to dissuade you from anything. I'm just posting what I see as reality. By the way, By claiming you have your own saech engine and trying to make money off it, you have become a competitor against google, bing and the likes. Expect some lawsuits if anyone is stupid enough to advertise with you and google finds out. Expect more if you become popular. Don't understand? READ THE TOS of the things you use.

By the way, love your blog! Big fan of weird stuff. Keep up the blog, careful with the search! I ain't wankeling anytime soon (drat! your verb is kinda sticking in my head).

Thanks y'all.

@ Dual Core: I don't totally comprehend your TOS especially the parts about backups, budget web hosting plan and disk usage provision cuz I don't know much about webhosting. Will I be able to save my site backups regularly on my own? Will a forum site violate the the system resource limit? Will a video viewing site violate it? Also explain the disk usage part. It says something about all content being linked from html. What do you mean by contents consuming 500kb being restricted to 10% of purchased disk space? What will I use the remaining spaces for? Will video streaming violate this?

Please reply.

So the questions?

plus this ones: How come you've spent 100s of dollars on a site that runs on free open source software and packages? Is the money being zapped by the hosting plan or what? What advice can you give me on hosting my sites?

Please reply with answers or were you just advertising the site?
