Has anyone done the basic tutorial 5? I'm getting errors from the ExampleFrameListener.h file.

@ Big star: Why are you trying to complile from source? Are you using a linux OS?
ProgrammingRe: Game Development: Join The Team by gameaddict(m): 12:16am On Jul 11, 2010
@ world best: I've seen the error. I forgot to attach the ground object to a scene node! Thanks.
ProgrammingRe: Game Development: Join The Team by gameaddict(m): 9:19pm On Jul 10, 2010
I keep getting weird errors. I've posted a question on the ogre forum.

@skoten: You may not have much problems if you're not using windows 7. Also download the app wizard to make things easier.

@ world best: Did you have any problem on the second basic tutorial? I created the plane and lights but only the ninja model appears.

okay, cool!

@ world best: Could you guide me through making a simple window without the example framework? I used the app wizard to set up an empty project but each time I try debugging, I get lots of errors.
ProgrammingRe: Game Development: Join The Team by gameaddict(m): 11:45pm On Jul 09, 2010
yeah, I just finished the first one. The engine is kinda tricky! I haven't figured out how to run a project without using the provided framework. I keep getting linker errors. I've decided to download the app wizard. I'll create a project to see if it helps.

Found solution. Turn off anti virus! Any work around?

Finally running the first ogre tutorial in debug mode. It gives errors in release mode. Any clues?
ProgrammingRe: Game Development: Join The Team by gameaddict(m): 12:06am On Jul 09, 2010
@ world best: It all depends on what we can easily accomplish regarding time. If we do a full 2d game, we'll have to draw a lot of things like animation frames but other things may be easier. If we go with 3d, we'll have to worry more about lighting and stuff. Another option is making it a 3d platform game just like the abe's oddessy game which reduces the things we have to worry about.

Viewing the ogre demos, COOL!!!

@ maximip: cool idea! I just checked out a video of the game. Loved the way the puzzles were implemented. Especially those aspects where you could either possess or fool your enemies into doing something. THAT ROCKS! Since we've gotten a basic outline of the game, We should start discussing the steps involved in each level. How many enemy encounters, creating puzzles that are fun to solve etc.
ProgrammingRe: Game Development: Join The Team by gameaddict(m): 9:15pm On Jul 08, 2010
Thanks. I thought it was better to download the pro version since it was free for students. I'm downloading the express one now.

I found a tutorial on zbrush, used it to make a head in sculptris. I heard they can't be animated for games. Too bad.

Hi guys!

I've checked out ogre3d and it's cool. I don't know if it works with dev cpp cuz I haven't seen any info on installing it. I've tried downloading visual c++ from the dreamsparks website twice now but I'm having problems with it. Each time, I've had to pause a lot cuz of PHCN but it stops downloading and I have to start all over again. It's a two gig file which makes it even worse. Anyways, I'll check out the tutorials to see how fast I can learn to use it. No matter, I'll contribute where I can in whatever aspect.

cool storyline!

I think we should start implementing all this somehow to see how we can put everything together. We should start brainstorming on other parts instead of concentrating on one thing but in a way that does not close off one aspect to the other. We can start talking game play keeping in mind what the coders can implement and also considering level changes and additions as everything progresses. The game engine to be used should be one that most of the intermediate and expert coders are familiar with or can easily get up to speed with. Those who interested in the design should start discussing the levels and models.

This project needs some spice and inspiration. Maybe we should talk a little about games we've played and stuff. Like when I played the first level of COD MW. The game had me from the beginning! Before playing this game, I tended to shun FPS games but landing on that ship changed my life forever! I enjoyed it till the very end! How can we control our camera system if it's going to be an FPS? We should realize that no matter how we choose to create the game, certain expectations come with all genres and game play. How do we present realistic AI since the new storyline involves a protagonist who is connected with so many people. Do we present them only in cut scenes? Lets discuss.
ProgrammingRe: Game Development: Join The Team by gameaddict(m): 5:22pm On Jul 06, 2010
@ skoten: Hopefully, my internet is okay for now.

@ Eveyone: If you feel the storyline is okay or don't want to add to that area, add your thoughts on other stuffs like the puzzles and the levels. We need to do this quickly so we can have a complete outline before any coding takes place.

@world best: Been playing with sculptris,  Still haven't found tutorials for it but I'll go looking for zbrush tutorials and try to implement them.

@ sweet pawn. I've sent the program to your mail. It's complete except for a particular function that sometimes gives the wrong result. Please look into it.

cool storyline guys! We can start thinking of the layout for the levels. Might not be able to post for some time cuz my connection has got problems . I'll try reading and working from my phone though.

It's really cool. I haven't gotten a hang of the tools yet but its fun making strange shapes without calling extrude and fixing values all the time like in 3ds max or blender.

cool guys! Anyone tried out sculptris? Its the coolest 3d app I've ever tried. kaii!!!!! This thing sweet.

@ world best: please lets modify that storyline. The Niger delta case is a sensitive one and creating an agent who goes around shooting the militants(fellow Citizens) because the Americans want him to rescue their own people just doesn't appeal to my senses. We should be trying to solve the regions problem instead of planning to shoot them. I had some game ideas related to militants and the region months ago but had to change it to reflect the people's plight better because of this thought. It's on a larger scale though plus it's really wide and complicated for what we're planning. I think we should make up new enemies and reasons. How about the agent is working on his own trying to bring down a powerful arch enemy or drug lord who has blackmailed him in the past. That way, we can give the character some moral conflicts and resolutions. The plans for different bases would still be implemented. I think we should also implement other elements such as humor and flashbacks(perhaps through the notes he finds).

I think our first game has to be lighthearted and non controversial. What do you think?

Yup, 3d. Guys post your ideas.

@ Big star: True talk. There are many things that could hinder projects and collaborations like this not even considering the fact that it's Nigeria where we face constant blackouts amongst other things. That said, I do believe this has a higher chance of turning out alright. We can do it as long as we can manage things as much as we can. There's a reasonable number of free tools on the internet to make things easier. We don't have to go over the top at this time. We're taking it little by little. We'll make little levels and have fun 'em, decide what to add or remove and implement other things.

@Everyone: So what's the plan? People management and stuff? If you have a storyline or idea or want to add to the one I posted on the original page: https://www.nairaland.com/nigeria/topic-3381.32.html#msg6311399 please post it here.

Here's the storyline I was thinking of: A simple maze in the form of a jungle. The player will not only face the task of terminating enemies but they'll also have to master the maze so they won't get lost. We can add a timer to see who completes it in the shortest time. As we develop the story, we should also concentrate on AI which will depend largely on the nature of enemies we decide to use.

Post yours or add to it so we can get started quickly.

Thanks dude!

This does seem easier than what I've been trying to implement. I used multi-dimensional arrays to create and draw boards for each player but I got stuck trying to implement an address system to use strings to locate boxes cuz I wanted the player to be able to choose, using strings like '7D'(7 being the row and D being the column) instead of typing in two integers each time he wanted to set up his box or try to bomb the PC's ship. This new idea seems cool. I'll send both codes soon.

Your elements don't blend well. The first would have been better if you had converted your image to vector, traced, colored and placed with some adjustments.

@ world best: signed up. cool idea for first project. We can start brainstorming on a simple storyline and setting. These two need to correlate. For example, A simple maze in the form of a jungle. The player will not only face the task of terminating enemies but they'll also have to master the maze so they won't get lost. We can add a timer to see who completes it in the shortest time. As we develop the story, we should also concentrate on AI which will depend largely on the nature of enemies we decide to use. What do you think?

@ sweet pawn. Lots of talk about battle ships on the internet but I'm guessing it's the one where players place ships on squares and randomly choose squares hoping the opponent's ship is on it. If the result is positive, BANG! Is that it?
