Satellite TV TechnologyRe: Official Thread of Free-To-Air Satellite TV (Part 1) by Gangsta101(m): 1:08pm On Sep 08, 2008
hi everyone,

i finally got my hands on a PVR enabled decoder over the weekend ( a clone) and i am finally glad i am back on the grid, after missing out on the more than 2 weeks of free to view DSTV and the olympics and the start of the football season, but then again, better late than never, Abi?

so the next question is ' is it worth it?' the answer to this depends on the kind of person you are. i happen to be a very gadgety person so i tend to overlook its shortcomings but others may not be so enraptured by it as i am. for me, buying the standard x-series strong decoder, is like going out today to buy a Nokia 3610 (okay, maybe 6600), i mean, technology has moved on and it makes sense for us to move with it. so even though this might be a clone, it is what it can do that matters. let me go over it's features for you guys.

this model does not have an inbuilt HDD, so it requires an external memory device for it's pvr function (flash drive to be precise, cos it wouldn't recognise my external IDE HDD), so this limits its ability to record for long, but then the picture quality of the recorded program is amazing, almost as good as the original program, and it can actually be programmed to record a program which might come up when u r not available, so that would mean the end of missing out on all those matches u can't watch because you have to go out, and it would also put an end to unnecassary arguments. another thing is that even though it is not a dual tuner, you can actually record a program in the background while watchin another one as long as they are on the same TP for instance you can be watching something on JSC 1 while recording what is going on on jsc2.
the downside of all this is the flash drive, is it me or every single flash drive available in the market today is messed up? once u record one program, if you try recording a second, it doesn't write well. i am thinking of getting a memory card and hooking it up via a card reader to the decoder permanently cos they are more stable.

but the worst thing about this decoder is that it is very slow, this is with respect to decoding signals, u don't really notice it while watching tv, but if u want to track a satellite, it lenghtens ur time cos u have to move ur dish very slowly if not u might miss the signal, it takes about a few miliseconds to reflect any change in signal level, by which time you might have left the signal path, for strong signals like nss7, this is alright but for nilesat, it can be very demoralizing, i experienced this first hand over the weekend and i still need to borrow a strong decoder to fine tune my dish.

another thing that is still irritating me is that it the usual codes i know for bringing up the key edit menu for inputting keys are not bringing up any response, and it does not recognize the usual softcam keys, i will try .bin files and other file formats and see if it helps.

all in all, i think it is a pretty decent buy, can't wait to get my hands on an original device though. will keep you guys posted.

Enigma

i guess there's no need for a reply. i just realised that even though there are a few 'european' decoders with such specs, their prices are pretty steep, so i have to take my time to order cos the guy does not have enough money on him to my requirements. what i also noticed is that it is the HDTV support that takes the price up to above $250 cos even the single tuners that are HD compliant are pretty expensive.

All,

does anyone know how to patch the previous trendtv decoder, cos i've got one here that only has one sat listed and only 2 channels. there's no way to add TPs or new satellites.
Satellite TV TechnologyRe: Free to Air codes by Gangsta101(m): 7:01am On Sep 02, 2008
Okaakoko,

Details please! what channels exactly got scrambled and when were they scrambled? cos there have been no free-to-view channels on that sat for a while now. but then again u said u still get 8 channels so maybe u have a multi-lnb setup. so more details please!
Satellite TV TechnologyRe: Free to Air codes by Gangsta101(m): 8:16pm On Sep 01, 2008
Hi Enigma

i need a favour from you, i've got a friend who is coming in from the UK in a weeks time and i would like him to get me a decoder. i have actually been off the grid for a while now cos i gave out my former decoder with the assumption that i was going to get a humax decoder ( can't remember where i read it but someone said it could open the jsc sports channels). anyways, i haven't been able to find the humax decoder around and i am missing out on a lot of things.
anyway, what i need now is a decoder that has the following features
1. PVR function i.e ability to carry out timeshift functions, and to be able to record programs either to an internal or external HDD.
2. Dual tuner function, so as to be able to watch 2 channels at once or record one while watching another simultaneously.
3. control via usb, as opposed to just being able to accept info via usb.
4. Multi encrytion CAM.
5. Support for FTA channels.
6. support for HDTV

Now i have been searching and i have come across i decoder that almost fits this bill, and that is the motorola DCT6412, but from what i can see, it is principally made for the american market so i am not sure if i can use it with the sats i receive here, also i don't think there is support for it widely available vis a vis softcams, patches e.t.c, and finally it seems to be distributed principally by a company COMCAST so i am not even sure if it supports FTA. the dstv pvr decoder is similar, but is definitely not fta friendly. and most of the other decoders i have come across are all single tuners.

so if u could help me find one that fits this description and for which i can find support for from the European websites, i would really appreciate it.

thanks

Figment

I think what u saw was 'LNBF' which would probably mean that your lnb has become disconnected somehow. what kind of setup are u using, if your lnb is within your reach, try disconnecting the F-connector, that is the metallic stuff that attaches your cable to the LNB outside and then reattach it. do the same for every F- connector all the way to the final one on the decoder and see if the signal returns.

just a tip, if u r looking for info on free settings for gprs internet browsing, how about u check on the phone section of this forum, i'm sure u will find a guide or the necessary info u need. cos staying here and asking for help will not really benefit u. it's just an advice though.

Baba Egun,

ha ha! that was a good one (or should i say bad one), your experience was priceless to say the least. these days u can't be sure what to buy again or where to buy whatever it is u can't make up your mind to buy in the first place ( hope that makes sense). the biggest problem with buying things in NIGERIA these days is that first, the only things available in the market are the models that are archaic, then they sell them to u at ridiculously high prices, and when u become dependent on them, they start giving u the fake version of what is in the first place substandard.
the fact is that the consumer does not have a say in what he or she is getting when it comes to quality so that now we are entirely dependent on whatever it is the manufacturers in the far east decide they want to give us, and what the unscrupulous importers decide to bring in for us. POOR US.

Graciousme a lady!!! well, that's another good one. welcome aboard.

Enigma,

i can't remember seeing a post from u in a while, hope all is well? we miss having ur input here.

Constant k

any luck with your DSTV set up

All

Have you guys noticed how editorial twinstaiye's post have become of recent, he seems to have become a true moderator, he only steps in go give what seems like final summations (sorta like a judge ha ha).

ConstantK/Blue horizo

i think twinstaiye's suggestion is the way to go. when u get home, switch on your decoder and tv, then load as much credit as possible and then call someone to put u thru. u know u didn't answer me about the type of decoder u r using. also, u didn't specify the signals u r receiving, i.e what channels. but if u r using a strong decoder and are currently receiving eutelsat w4 i.e dstv or trend tv, or hitv, then helping u won;t be a problem. any decoder from a paytv network might be a little harder to work with. all the best.

Mecussey,

u still didn't reply me about that three step charger, i'm still waiting to know how to recognize it. thanks

i cab imagine u must be stewing by now, everyone else seems to be getting these free channels except you, and no one seems to be paying attention to you, sorta like the kid who can't get the point of a joke that everyone else is laughing about, i don't have a decoder at the moment so i am also off the grid but let's see if we can be of any help to you.
first, what decoder are u using, i want to assume you r on either eutelsat w4 position at 36 eastor intelsat7/10 at 68 east. channel o is on the first while the others are on the second. why i am asking what decoder u r using is cos most people use strong and that is what i am familiar with.  the , v, they are talking about refers to the polarisation of the signal u can change this by pressing the menu button on your remote, under dish installation, come down to manual scan, navigate to the channel O freq, i don't know what it is so u have to find that out by yourself. u get there by shifting left or right on the second item under the manual scan screen. when u get to the freq, below it u will see an option h or v, change it to the necessary one, u should see the signal turn green. after that go up one level and do an auto scan. after this u should see. the channel appear. i am assuming u know how to follow these steps, if u don't, maybe u should be very specific about what the problem is then maybe i can help. cheers
Satellite TV TechnologyRe: Official Thread of Free-To-Air Satellite TV (Part 1) by Gangsta101(m): 11:48pm On Aug 17, 2008
Mecussey,

i think Nash mentioned dry cell, maintenance free batteries because of these problems u outlined, they are similar to the ones already in the ups but have a bigger capacity, so the issue of acid spillage or accidental fires are pretty much negligible, but still it is a valid advice. when i was in 2/300 levels, i had a wet cell which i used to power my deck and the lights in my room, so i have first hand knowledge of the problems of such wet cells, and getting the right charger took me months of experimenting. anyways, dry cells it will be when the time comes.
PS: what exactly is this 3-step charging system u r talking about and how does one recognise it?
Satellite TV TechnologyRe: Official Thread of Free-To-Air Satellite TV (Part 1) by Gangsta101(m): 9:14pm On Aug 15, 2008
Nash,

that's an unbelievable amount of detail. thanks a lot, i appreciate it. ur decoder appears to be similar to mine, i'll definitely try and hook myself up with one of those batteries next week, and switch the batteries and see. by the way, do know how to disable that annoying beep that is always there in the background whenever the ups is running, i was thinking of just punching the damn speakers or something, cos there's nothing as annoying as that constant beep. once again, thanks for your post, i am certain i am not the only one interested in it.

Shanumark

apart from the standard 6969 which opens up locked channels for which u already have the keys inputted, u also need to know 8282 which brings up the key edit menu for your standard dec keys, and also 8280 (which anyone hardly uses), which brings up the key edit menu for BISS/DCW  keys, but then again these are not really 'codes' are they?

Pitodenz,

Bro, e be like say u know just about everything with respect to strong decoder, men, that is super.

'Comrade' Jesu de

how far with ur attempts at recieving nilesat, any luck yet?

Hi everyone

with respect to azeezbaba's receiver problem, we all agree it is not dead, but getting it to work is the problem now, all the suggestions offered have been tried by people with similar problems in the past with results, but Azeezbaba, do u have the necessary cable, i know either you or your installer has the 9 - 9pin rs232 cable, but if you are goin to use the laptop to reciever option, then u would need a 15 - 9 pin rs 232 cable, but so u have that or do u know someone that has one? i noticed the usb to serial cable used by starcomms desktop modem has a 9-pin output, you can try that and see. getting the necessary software is not a problem, go to the stong technology site at www.stong-technologies.com if u have internet access. all the best.

Nash-FTA

that's a really good one, pls just confirm for me that u are using a standard desktop UPS (something like the one in enitan's picture). i've been wondering how to get UPS that could work off a standard car battery without burning off the charging circuit, so all you are saying is that i should just switch the batteries and i'll be good to go? i know these batteries usually require about 8amps of current to charge, but that does not mean they cannot use less than that, the only danger is to the 'charger, since these batteries have very little internal resistance, the tend to draw large amounts of current from the 'charger', so if it isn't sturdy enough, it will just burn up. but if you have been able to do that, pls let me know so i can do the same.

BigJoe,

a few posts back, you said something like ", the good thing about this forum(thread) is that it makes a guru out of anyone that visits it regularly", that, i have to say, is the Gospel truth. i still remember my first post less than a year ago, then the thread was about 5 - 6 pages long, i had heard a lot about keys and what they would do to coded channels (looking back now, most of them were just myths), i read through the entire thread, thought about what people were saying, and came back and asked some questions, since, then i have gotten much better and much more knowleagable, i mean i am no Enigma, but i definitely am not ignorant about FTA.
why am i saying this, just to buttress the point bigjoe is making about people needing to read thru this thread before asking any questions. the thread is now 52 pages long, but the fact is that most of the content is just a lot of talk and repitition, but there are definitely precious gems of info within. it is almost unfair to ask someone to go back and read everthing that has been posted just to get info, but the truth is, it is  people taking this shortcut method of getting info that has made the thread this long. reading thru the entire thread will almost certainly answer any question anyone has, and provide the person with even more info in the process. i wonder if Twinstaiye has been able to find a way to apply stickies in this forum or is it that this forum does not support it.

PS: People, check this strong decoder out http://www.strong-technologies.com/frmProdDetails.aspx?id=189, unfortunately it seems to only be available in australasia, it wouldn't be bad to get one.

let me take u back a bit, in ur intro post, u said the dvb card could be used to access the net, and u gave an example using mweb. do u think it would be possible to set up an internet connection using one of our own network providers such as mtn or starcomms?
Satellite TV TechnologyRe: Official Thread of Free-To-Air Satellite TV (Part 1) by Gangsta101(m): 5:57pm On Aug 12, 2008
Graciousme,

what decoder do u use, is it strong or something else? i had a pretty detailed discussion with enigma a while back about inputting keys into a detailed decoder, u can find it on the free to air code thread at this link ]https://www.nairaland.com/nigeria/topic-114591.32.html the 06 and 08 enters into a 2 digit column on the left of the key column you are trying to change, assuming u r using strong, but i doubt that is what u r using or am i wrong?

i couldn't get the decoder i was talking about cos the silly guy sold it to someone else without informing me. now i can't bring myself to buy a strong decoder after seeing what that other one is capable of doing, clone or no clone.

wow men, that's a lot of annoyance. abeg make una try take am easy, cos i can almost certainly see what happens next, toxnaija replies, there will be a lot of name calling and acrimony and we will only return to the fta topic after at least 5 posts each from both of u. pls let's try and tolerate each others eccentricities, that is why it is called a forum.

actually, it doesn't hurt to digress from the main topic a little once in a while, it gives us the chance to explore new possibilities, for instance dvbguy brought our attention to offline downloading during one of these brief forays into other issues. a little variety doesn't really hurt anyone (i hope). once again i dey beg unu make unu take am easy oh.

Jesu de,

first a little info on nilesat, there are actually 3 different bird broadcasting around that 7oW axis, namely atlantic bird 4 (or 3 i'm not really sure at the moment) nilesat 101 and 102, they are actually so close with respect to the position, content and region of focus that their differences are almost negligible, but they are still there for any one who looks carefully, for instance the first freq 10,758 is actually broadcasted by the atlantic bird, which has a wider area of coverage than the other two birds and thus is more easily tracked than the others, but after 'catching' it, you need to adjust the lnb skew a little to get the maximum signals for the other nilesat channels, and in some cases u might receive it clearly but never catch the other two.

however, having said that, some people have reported catching nilesat with a 1.8m dish in abuja, i don't suppose it should be too hard to replicate in suleija. what is the maximum signal strenght you have been able to achieve with the 10,758 freq, is it up to 75%, if it is close enough try pressing down on different edges of the dish and see how high the signal level will go. that will give u an idea of what u need to do. try raising up the base of ur dish slightly from each side and see what happens to the signal level. finally if you can't improve it, try using a fuji lnb, it costs about 2500, and is purported to be the best ku band lnb in the market. pls get back to me lets see how u do.

My superior, Justx24 or Twinstaiye,

My question is on Nilesat: After all the lecture i received through the reading of the post in this nairaland forum, i decided to put it all in practice on Nilesat, i was able to get just one frequency on Nilesat which is 10758 (V) that contain only 15 channel. after the turn of the LNB clockwise or anticlockwise with the horizontal frequencies. i try all the remaining frequency but to know avail, please can you direct me further on what to do to get the remain frequency.
to be of any use to u, we need to know some basic things such as where u live and your equipment i.e dish size, decoder and possibly lnb make. cos all these matter if u want to receive nilesat.

mecussey:
let me ask these questions to those who know; which patch are you currently using? is your latest softcam key working? is your patch able to open ETV? does size of patch or software matters? because my Strong x decoder is running on 1.2M patch but the latest I am getting from net now is 1.1M, I wonder how that would be better. who knows?. Again I can't access the menu key with 8282 any alternative?
mecussey, there's something i do know about patches, they can only open the channels they have keys for. what i mean is if u install a softcam that has only 100bytes but contains info on sabc, then sabc should definitely open. someone once said if if u patch your strong and etv disappears then go back to the original factory software, i was using a patched decoder for etv without any prob. i suggest u look for an earlier patch and ty it on and see. only problem is it will mess up the autoroll function of the decoder vis a vis art/showtime. alternatively, use 8282to bring up the key edit menu and check if there are keys for sabc. i am actually not sure if they are the same for etv, but u can manually enter them if they are not present. all you need to do is open a softcam file with notepad and search for the keys and enter them manually.

azeezbaba:
Hi All,

The premiership is about to start and nobody is saying anything about which channels to watch out for.

Badaru1 told us on this forum that AL-Jazeera now has the premiership right in the middle east, will GTV and RDV still be showing it?

Please, somebody should respond because some of us can't wait for the premiership to start and as a matter of fact i subscribed to this FTA because of PREMIERSHIP.

Thank you all
if aljazeera is going to show prem. league then i have to try and open it. i'm sure rdv and some of these other african channels will transmit some matches, and i am also sure that showtime keys will be scarce. meanwhile, does this mean nothing for showtime?

@ F_Marshal,
it's only God that will deliver Nigerians from the technical ineptitude of NTA.
here also in Naija, NTA is also dishing out the same bad quality pictures in their olympics coverage. the sad thing is that all other local tv stations in Nigeria are all taking their live feeds from NTA's transmission.
to make matters worse, it was exposed to the whole world that NTA  does not have dedicated feeds from the olympics broadcast partners. or how does one explain a situation where the live transmission of Nigeria's Men's olympics football team's match against Japan was suddenly disrupted and it's place came another live match between Cameroun and Honduras.
you can imagine my anger when our own live match was replaced with that of another country!!!!!!
this is what i call TREASON AT THE HIGHEST LEVEL shocked
to add insult to injury, i discovered that my neighbour who had DSTV was enjoying live transmission of the same Nigeria match that NTA yanked off air. to say i was ashamed of being a Nigerian at that point in time would be a gross understatement.  imagine DSTV had HD quality didicated feeds for all live events at the olympics which they broadcast  Simultaneously.
as i settled to watch the rest of the match at my neighbours place, i could not help but wonder why NTA still existed!!!!!!
fact is i can't remember the last time i sat down to watch nta, if nothing else is available, i just get a book and read. poor picture quality, nonsense news and other programming, they are just a disgrace to tv broadcasting. i don't even try and watch them out of solidarity, might as well watch a blank screen. if u see the other african channels on nss7 and w3a, u will just wish there was nothing like NTA.

hi, that seems like a pretty smooth offer, i'll check up the progdvb and supported cards and see, if mine doesn't fit in i just might order one soon. i haven't bought the desktop yet cos i am still a little unsettled with respect to where i am based. had to move from zaria to kd recently and the amount of load i had to carry really discouraged me from buying a desktop then, but let me see how things go.

with respect to the signal levels and my inability to receive w3a, i think it makes sense, cos most of the channels i receive are above 60% for nilesat and nss7, but a little lower for w3a.
Satellite TV TechnologyRe: Official Thread of Free-To-Air Satellite TV (Part 1) by Gangsta101(m): 8:34am On Aug 09, 2008
hi folks

it's been a while, i've been away for while, i see we are now discussing Free to air Grammer (or shouldn't be according to bigJoe), well, fact is bad written grammer seems to be a constant on most forum i'm a part of and these include comments posted by native speakers, now i usually explain it as typos caused by the fact that most posters write on the go, either cos of limited time or they're multitasking on their system and just write a reply and then move on. it's something one just has to live with, but i think it is a good thing u pointed it out toxnaija, there has been a few times i was sorely tempted to write a reprimand for a few post where you see the poster has really taken his time to write something lenghty but it is so ridden with bad english that it makes the piece appear miserable even though it is a real gem. so i guess like enigma said, let's live and let live, but we are all professionals, it makes sense that we present ourselves to people in a manner that makes them think highly of us, and that can only be achieved with our ability to communicate properly.

anyways, to my original subject, there is something that has always made me really mad, and that is when someone tells me u can't do something and doesn't give me a reason why. for instance, i first came across nilesat in 2003/4 i think, cos here up north, that is what most tv centres use to show football, and there was this general agreement that u can't get nilesat outside northern nigeria, and nobody had any explanation for that. later, i found out people in the south can get it using a 2.5m dish(slightly more expensive) but i hadn't come across anyone who had tried using a 1.8m dish and failed so i decided to give it a go. i was in Makurdi, benue state 2 weekends ago, there was this old 1.8m dish that was used for arabsat in the past but was now just standing there. so i bought an lnb and decoder and set out to find out what happens for my self.

first, the dish was mounted on a 2.5m pole right next to a rickety chicken house, i tried accessing it with just a ladder, i put the lnb in place, but manipulating it properly was next to impossible. so i decided to bring the dish down to ground level so i could have enough space to manouvre.
next i tried seeking out nss7 first to get my orientation, i did that easily enough, with signal levels of about 97% on the first TP. next i tried w3a and also got that easily, with signal levels approaching 73% on the Tp with Go africa. so i turned my attention to nilesat, i tried for a few minutes with no luck before Nepa struck, it also started raining so i had to give up for that day. next day i had to go out and visit a few folks so that means i only had one more day left, so i fueled up the Generator and waited for it to stop raining and then i went out again to give it another go. after about five mins on the job i finally got some signal on the first TP, about 47%. with that, i got to work and adjusted everything i possibly could, but the best i could do was getting the signal level up to 71%. now anyone who has tried tuning nilesat would know that even though the first TP appears easily, the rest wouldn't unless u get a signal level of at least 74/5% on that first TP. no matter what i did i couldn't improve the reception, and none of the other tps would appear. so i had to give it all up and set up intelsat7/10 for them. admitting defeat is difficult so i still plan to go back one of these days and try again with a fuji lnb which i heard is pretty good.

Please is anyone using humax decoder in Nigeria, that he bought here, i went searching for one in Kaduna but couldn't get it, i heard that is the only one i can use to open aljazeera sports + with. i also searched for a technomate but people hadn't even heard of it. i did come across one decoder, supposedly made in Korea, which has a lot of interesting functions, PIP, timeshift, the ability to record programs to an attached HDD, USB and certain other functions, now i now it is the one of those cloned stuff, but it seems a lot better than the Strong we use here. the guy that owns it is willing to sell it For 14Grand but i'm hoping to get it for less than that, it is called I-class. i'll try and but it and get back to you guys, though anyone that feels i shouldn't can stop me before i make the purchase.
TV/MoviesRe: Offline Downloading Or "fishing" by Gangsta101(m): 8:09pm On Aug 06, 2008
wow,

this thread has progress ed alot since i've been away. too bad most of the discussion is between just two people. i guess this is because dvb cards are all but impossible to get in Nigeria. but if u happen to be in the north, there's this company in KD that specialises in buying stuff from abroad, preferably on ebay, and transporting down here within three weeks. they are called hepzibah. i am planning to order a laptop version of the card but i have to finish tweaking my laptop first.

i borrowed a friends desktop and installed the card so i could try it out and see for myself. his system had a 256mb ram and a processor speed of 1.6ghz, and about 30 - 40 gig of HDD. initially, the system had a problem with the virtual memory so it was very sluggish but i fixed that by increasing the paging file size. so after installing the card and the default viewing program it came with (can't remember the name right now. all this was 2 weeks ago), i encountered the following problems.

1. the card was not receiving any signal at all, i figured it would be wise to see if i could watch tv with the card in the first place, so i installed the progdvb u advised and kept tweaking with the whole setup to no avail. i finally deduced there was no power getting to the lnb from the card so i reconnected the lnbs to my decoder and then took a cable from the lnb out port of the decoder to the card and when i tried rescanning, i started receiving signals on nilesat and nss7, but no signals whatsoever from w3a. i tried inputing tp's manually but they still won't appear, instead, those corresponding to similar tp's on nilesat would appear.

2. the channels that appeared after scanning kept hooking or breaking. they would never appear fully like those from the decoder would. under options, there was one that i adjusted from normal to real-time (sorry, can't remember the name now) but this caused the whole system to hook. anyways i never got to solve that one sha.

3. i installed three different fishing softwares at different time, mainly skynet, skygrabber and one more i can't remember the name now, but none of them got to work initially, though there was a time the skygrabber finally noticed the signals from w3a and tried connecting but after a few seconds everything packed up and i never got to connect again. i even downloaded that progdvb and skynet combo above but i didn;t get anything better.

now i have returned the system to my friend but i finally have intenet access again. but i'll keep following the discussion closely until i pay for my own desktop. meanwile, what do u think the minimum system requirements for running that card optimally would be?

hi fellas

Baba Eguns post gives me some hope. i've been thinking of installing nilesat for some friiends in Makurdi when i go to visit in a few weeks time, but i was doubting if a 1.8m dish would work, but if it works in abuja, maybe it will work in makurdi.
about the missing nilesat channels, it is one of those things most of us here have come to take for granted, some channels just won't come up, including the new mbc persia channel. what i have used to console myself and stop disturbing my dish is that for whatever reason, the same satellite, transmits different frequencies at differing intensities, probably has something to do with area of coverage intended but i don't know, that is why,BBCs signal strengyth is 66% while Cnn is 52%, and MBC persia is unreceivable.

something funny happened to me a few days ago. in the last few weeks, i had been experiencing some signal losses involving w3a, nilesat and on rare days, nss7. what happens is that some days, u wake up and most channels are gone from w3a, while on nilesat, only the chanels on very strong signal levels are still available e.g, bbc and foxmovies, the others fluctuate every few minutes, that is they come up, stay for about 5 mins and disappear. the next day, u wake up and everything is back to normal. i put up with that for about 2 weeks, then all of a sudden it became permanent, no return to status quo. i got really pissed off after i couldn't watch the nadal v federer match, called a friend and he said his was working just fine. i decided i was going to have to buy three new lnbs, i went away for a few days, and on the day i returned, i had some friends over who wanted to watch some aljazeera sports, so i decided to exchange the lnb i use for nss7 with nilesat because the nss7 seemed to be the least affected. when i changed it most of the channels were visible and the fluctuations ceased. that made me sure it was an lnb problem and definitely not a satellite one.

now when my dish was installed originally, the installer removed the dielectric over the base of the lnb and trimmed the edge of the lnb, so i looked into the open part and lo and behold there was a spider which had built a nest inside the lnb. i cleaned it out and put the original nilesat lnb back, and it worked like i charm. i checked the other lnb and there was also a spider in that also. damn spiders almost cost me N2,000. thot it would be a cool experience to share.

BOUGHT A 4650 RECIEVER, MOST CHANNELS OF INTREST HAVE BEEN BLOCKED. CAN SOMEONE HELPME WITH UNLOCK CODES AND STEPS. I LOVE TO WATCH LA LIGA , PREMIERSHIP AND SERIA A. PLS HELP ME.
wouldn't we all love go do just that? (i mean get codes to unlock just about everything we would like to have). but like the rollingstones said 'you can't always get what you want,  but if you try sometimes, you just might ,   get what you need"

we can't get all the TV content we might like to have, but theres a world to fta tv out there that provides a lot for us, my advice to you is to read this thread, and the main FTA thread here https://www.nairaland.com/nigeria/topic-7715.0.html and who knows, you just might get what you are looking for.
all the best.

sorry folks,

haven't had internet access for a while now. to answer your questions, the dvb card i was given is a lightwave series type. and i do know it is for a desktop, but the guy who gave it to me says his brother has one for a laptop, i have decided i am going to have to get a desktop, i just wanted to exhaust all possible options for using it with a laptop first.

Bodejohn,
sorry the chap is not a seller, the reason he gave me this one is because he said he got a newer one. he used to have a friend in the states who sends him all these stuff but the friend is back in the country now.

i an going to borrow a desktop and try my card out. i am currently downlaoding the necessary sofwares, ill get back to u guys.

hi people,

what a crazy world this is, i decided i needed a dvb card at all costs, and so i hit the phones calling everyone who owns a computer that i knew or anyone who could help me get a product into the country. well, one of my guys told me he had one so i went over to KD, and indeed it was the fabled dvb card with remote sensor and all, only problem was it was the desktop type, i thought it would be easy to get an adapter to convert the pci output to the pcmcia or usb output, i asked around again but everyone is assuring me i can't get that done. so now i have what i want but cant get it to work for me, so do i have to buy a desktop or does anyone have a way out>

ur post came just in time, i was typing out what i termed a guide to fta for w/african users. i guess i'll just send it to u tomorrow when i finish so u can maybe include it to urs. i also thot about downloading all 39 pages of our thread and combining them in a zip folder and making it available so anyone who cares to read them can easily access them at a go and read offline, will still do that though, let me finish with this first of all.

PS are there really only 4 birds receivable here on ku band, how about on c- band what are the birds available and what are the minimum dish sizes, does any one know?

Gitano,

can't get ur post outta my mind, what u say sounds almost too good to be true. since it's mobile and has no external antenna, i wonder how it connects to the net. could u do me a favour and send me pictures of your set up to my mailbox. i stay in zaria but wouldn't mind going down to warri and getting this thing for myself. or if it's something i can put together myself, (or with a little help). come to think about it, why don't we continue this discussion on the 'fishing' thread https://www.nairaland.com/nigeria/topic-145229.0.html.
cheers
