butoneday,

sorry pal, didn't do enof research. just confirmed the the name and position.

4sta,
to be of any help, we need to know ur setup, i.e. dish size, type of decoder, and such. i see u reside at malawi, i'm sure there are some sats with good coverage over ur area. what i suggest u do is go to lyngsat.com and check the what satellites are over ur area, u can then check out the channels available on them. the FTA channels have an {f} sign next to then i.e under video encryption. they also have an area of coverage map which gives u an index of what dish size u need to receive them. another thing we would need to know is how many dishes u can afford to set up. there are some in this forum who have up to four dishes facing everywhere. i also suspect u may be able to receive signals beamed towards the caribbeans and americas but then i don't pretend to know about stuff like that. so get back to us, maybe we can help.

the w3a signals came back on their own the next day and i was able to watch the semifinals yesterday.

Butoneday

do u know anyone receiving this eurobird. u said it was eurobird 1 but on lyngsat it's eurobird 9, or are they different birds? the channels there do look interesting and would be worth a try. but i assume, one would really need a big dish at least 3.2m to catch it or what do u think? i mean, it's ku band they are broadcasting on, and from what i know about nilesat, it might mean a bigger dish.

for those who install nilesat, what lnb would u say is the best to use for nilesat, i tried using a 'premium' lnb (costs about 1k) which was very good for nss7 and w3a, but the signal levels for some channels are very low. the strong i was using does not get nss7 and w3a so well but seems to be very good for nilesat. which would u say is the best for nilesat?

Great job Dvbguy

i knew there was more to satellite reception than just watching tv, this is an area am most definitely goin to put som time into. sorry but i'm gonna have to ask u alot of questions initially cos u r the expert for now. i use a laptop so i don't think i can connect a dvb card to it, but to ur knowledge, is there one i can connect to the laptop via say usb, i heard u mention something about usb. i'll go into town tomorrow and ask my satellite dealers if they have these stuff, will definitely get back to u
Satellite TV TechnologyRe: Official Thread of Free-To-Air Satellite TV (Part 1) by Gangsta101(m): 9:43pm On Jun 24, 2008
Hi people,

could someone pls confirm for me if w3a is down, i woke up this morning and all the channels except tv miramar were gone. this will be a bad time to not receive w3a because the semis are just around the corner.

i said something about resetting my nilesat and not really getting the signals right and still needing to tweak it. well, i finally got the chance to do it today and after playing about with the dish for sometime, i noticed that by tilting one side up i was able to get the signals up to the highest levels possible. now my dish is nearly back to how it was before, just that cnn is not clear at all, but it's good to be finally back.

for those receiving showtime art

it seems the art channels hardly stay open for long, even when the keys are said to be active i can hardly ever get the art channels to open like the showtime channels, can someone pls confirm or refute this?

what u describe seems interesting tho it aint 'free to air satellite tv' as this thread is called. how about u start a thread with that name somewhere on nairaland so those of us interested can follow it up and maybe take it to a new level?

thanks
Satellite TV TechnologyRe: Free to Air codes by Gangsta101(m): 1:58pm On Jun 24, 2008
Blazeup,

what we've been talking about is getting a decoder to open up scrambled channels using codes which some other people have posted. now there are somethings to note, these codes are usually cracked by people with the right equipment, now that usually means Europe, the middle east and north america, this means it is usually satellites they can receive that they crack open. this means u cannot open satellites such as dstv, canal sat africa, and that Ghanaian sat on eutelsat w3a, cos the crackers do not get them in the first place.

so usually the sats we receive receive here in nigeria that have codes available for them include, nilesat, hispasat, and probably more that i don't know of. now i have been focusing mainly on nilesat cos that's what i receive, there are three providers there that have keys available: showtime, ART, and aljazeera jsc sports. the keys for showtime and art are encoded with a format called irdeto 2 ( which happens to be the same as DSTV, so u wonder why we can't get codes for dstv bah?). and jsc sports has dual encryption, irdeto and skycrypt.

following the discussion from here shouldn't be a problem i guess.

Enigma'

i thot i should ask u if u happen to know how the keys are prepared, i now its nice getting them from others but it would be nicer preparing them myself. do u know the setup required to prepare keys?
Satellite TV TechnologyRe: Free to Air codes by Gangsta101(m): 3:31pm On Jun 20, 2008
Enigma,

i've tried with no success, i guess i have to try and let it rest for a while. some one said he gets nss7 c band and watches these euro championships there, i'll give it a shot. thanks for ur time. will keep trying various other fta stuff sha.
Satellite TV TechnologyRe: Free to Air codes by Gangsta101(m): 2:50pm On Jun 18, 2008
Enigma,

i guess the reason i'm posting on this thread and not on the main fta thread is cos this one is named 'fta codes', so i'm not trying to make this one a rival for bigjoe's thread.

now, the strong decoder also brings up the biss key edit menu when u press 8280 over any channel. i wish i had taken a screen shot before posting, but i'll try and do that tomorrow. when the key edit menu appears, there are sixty rows of 32 digits each. now unlike the 8282 menu which has got a space to enter the type of encryption i.e irdeto etc, and the network ident, 0603 for aljazeera, the biss menu just has row after row of 32 digit streams. i had earlier on deleted every single entry and just typed in the biss string for aljazeera but it didn't open, and since there wasn't a space to input network ident. i wasn't really confident with what i was doin.
i read somewhere that only the humax decoder can open aljazeera, i wonder why, that is if it is true, wish i could get somewone who has opened it to give me a breakdown.
thanks enigma, i'll keep on trying, there's nothing else to do.
Satellite TV TechnologyRe: Free to Air codes by Gangsta101(m): 3:15pm On Jun 16, 2008
Enigma,

It seems we have to continue this discussion on manually inputting keys. The problem is that after loading a softcam or a new software or whatever, I can’t get the jsc sports +1,2,3 channel to open. And even after pressing 8282 to bring up the keys edit menu, I still can’t find any page that matches the keys I have for aljazeera.
Now there are several things I have noticed about the jsc keys
1. the jsc keys are grouped under BISS keys when I open some softcams
2. they are sometimes listed as DCW keys on some web pages.
3. the strong decoder groups them as irdeto/skycrypt
4. the key Ident line is listed as 00 63 00 00.
5. and the left hand column where I think the cas is inputted while for showtime and art contains just two digits i.e 06 or 08, that for jsc sports contains a string of up to12 digits i.e 0A8F:0102:0E08

so when I tried loading them manually, I initially put 00 63 on the ident line but for the left hand column I tried different things from 01 to breaking the above 12 digits and trying different combinations. Next I tried using the digits from the above 12 string as the key ident but all my maneuvers didn’t work.

I guess all this long talk just means is ‘how do u manually input keys for the jsc sports channels.

Thanks man.
Satellite TV TechnologyRe: Free to Air codes by Gangsta101(m): 3:34pm On Jun 13, 2008
Enigma

thanks a lot, what happened was that i thought i might as well give it a go while waiting for your reply. lo and behold, it opened up everything, and not just a few but all the showtime and art channels. in fact i just downloaded a softcam file and opened it with notepad and got the key, seems i was on the same wavelenght with u given the distance. thanks a lot man. i couldn't get the jsc channels to open, but i'm sure that i can fix that myself. my decodr is refusing to recognise my flash drive that's why i didn;t try loading the softcam automatically.

PS what do the .bin files do, cos the decoder doesn't recognise them, and they can't be opened with notepad?
Satellite TV TechnologyRe: Free to Air codes by Gangsta101(m): 12:59pm On Jun 12, 2008
Enigma

i know we have had this discussion several times, but let me bring it up once again cos i have understood alot of things since the last time but i am just curious about something in particular.

converting the keys for hex to dex or the other way round is not a problem, thanks to explanation, but the keys for the strong decoder are 16bits long and in 4 rows, sort of like this

00 xx xx xx xx xx xx xx xx
02 xx xx xx xx xx xx xx xx
04 xx xx xx xx xx xx xx xx
06 xx xx xx xx xx xx xx xx

while the ones posted on the net are 32 bits long and in 2 rows

00 xx xx xx xx xx xx xx xx xx xx xx xx xx xx xx xx
02 xx xx xx xx xx xx xx xx xx xx xx xx xx xx xx xx

so if i want to input these keys into the strong decoder, is it just a matter of dividing the 32 bit string into 2 bits of 16 each?

whatever happened to you? u started an interesting thread and just zoomed off. i was just wondering about the free internet stuff u talked about, any hopes of it coming soon? or do u have an idea how one can get internet access via satellite directly?
Satellite TV TechnologyRe: Official Thread of Free-To-Air Satellite TV (Part 1) by Gangsta101(m): 12:40pm On Jun 12, 2008
Hi guys,

had this terrible experience last weekend. i went out to visit some friends on sunday and on my way back i was caught up in a storm which kept blowing down trees and peoples roofs. when i finally reached home, i saw my dish by the road side. the wind had swept it at least 30metres from the spot i installed it, and it was pretty banged up. but instead of feeling bad, i was pretty upbeat cos now i had a chance to finally try my hand out at installing, cos all i was doing previously was just tinkering with an already installed dish. so i set it up to face nss7 for that night, and the next day, i managed to get the dish back together again and started trying to re- install my nilesat (forgot to mention that the rain distorted the rods holding the lnb up). initially i was using BBC's tp to track the bed but i couldn't get it. after 2 days of frustration, i was talking to a friend who had had a similar problem and he said i should try using the first tp on the strong decoder nilesat list. ( can't remember the exact freq now) cos all the other channels will only appear when i can get up to 75% signal strength on that one.
so yesterday i went back and gave it a go and the signals turned green almost immediately but at 56%. further tinkering got it up to 70-1%, and it wouldn't rise any further. but now i can receive bbc, mbc 2,3,4,action, the Jsc sports channels and some others. i know i've still got some more tinkering to do, but it's a great start. adding nss7 and w3a to it was a breeze, so now i've got my dish back to a semblance of order.

mecussey, did u say patch is available for nilesat?

it's a shame that after the first match, no channel is showing the Euro championships, including  RTS who kept advertising it for days. now i'm goin to search for keys for jsc sports, if no luck then i have to go and buy the aljazeera cards, it won't be a loss cos i heard the have the rights for champions league for next season.

Hello people,

I finally got tired of inputting keys, and trying to install patches thru my USB port and receiving error messages, so I called my installer to come and patch it for me, he asked for N400 and I was pissed, because as far as I was concerned, the keys were free. I told him this and he said I could go online and install it myself. He finally did it and now my decoder is finally patched that was about 2 weeks ago. I just hope from now on I can be able to transfer softwares via USB without it telling me ‘memory error’. Truth is when all is said and done, only the ‘not so interesting channels’ were open. The cinema channels kept on showing the same 4 movies ad nauseum, nat geo wild, animal planet and disc science are okay, but they are not as cool as the original channels, I mean they all seem to focus on animals, no really cool documentaries as can be seen in the main nat geo channel and discovery, but then again, we are just grateful to be receiving it in the first place, ain’t we? The patches have stopped working for about I week now anyway.

This brings me to something else, its alright downloading softwares and keys, but I guess it would be even better to be able to open them ourselves. From what I know about cracking computer and phone softwares, it takes a real computer guru to do these things but it still doesn’t stop me from wishing I could do it myself. If anyone knows a website with tips or somewhere we can get a tutorial from, I’m sure there are plenty of us who wouldn’t mind giving it a go.

Now, there’s something else that has been on my mind. The strong decoder we use here, they are really good for tracking and receiving fta channels, but that seems to be all they are good for. The dstv decoders can record up to 120mins of program (I think) and some of them come with dual view capabilities, now I was wondering if one can use these decoders for tracking fta channels, or if there are such fta decoders with these same functions, I mean we have so much programs we can get free of charge and it would be cool to be able to record and store such programs as one wishes to do.

Someone once said that eutelsat w3a is only worthwhile for French speaking people, I think I would have to agree with him. I’m currently receiving about 9 or 10 channels.
• Go Africa is only on for a limited amount of time and they are constantly going on break, the really cool thing about this channel is that they show really current music at a really clear resolution. Apart from that, their serie A matches are usually broadcasted an hour after kick off. They also show other football matches but u can’t really depend on them and there are usually other channels showing such matches. Every other program is in French.
• MSNBC: seems to be dedicated entirely to the US elections, and other stuff happening in the US. As far as they are concerned nothing else exists.
• MBC1/2/3: actually they are just two channels transmitting three different stations depending on when u catch them. Most of their programs are in French also, and they usually hook up to TV afrique and/or BBC when they have nothing else to do, but usually at night. They also show football sometimes and the commentary is in English which makes them the best channel for the champions league.
• TV Malagasy, 2STV, RTS 1, TV Miramar, MBS tv: if u r not receiving them, u will not miss them. Programming is almost entirely in French, sometimes show African wrestling, music (African), e.t.c.

So, I guess we have to wait for those free to view guys to start broadcasting, who knows, w3a may finally become worth it.
Nilesat still remains the bomb, u r always guaranteed a cool movie every evening from one of the three MBC channels, or from fox movies, sham tv, infinity tv, dubai one, or one of those other channels that one does not usually fancy.MTV Arabia, Nessma tv and smile tv are great for music, and BBC world, CNN and aljazeera are super for news.
NSS 7 is for those who love Makossa and football. LC2, STV 1/2, canal 2 inter, and RDV are usually worth it, especially RDV who show any match that is the hottest match at the moment.
Basically, that is it about the packages I am receiving. So what are we saying about our encyclopedia/stickey thread for this thread?
Satellite TV TechnologyRe: Official Thread of Free-To-Air Satellite TV (Part 1) by Gangsta101(m): 2:57pm On May 14, 2008
Pitodenz,

u couldn't have said it better. i wish someone using the patch would let us know
1. if it works
2. what channels it opens
3. how long it usually lasts before it goes off

Mide

well, i can't past an image of the strong key menu but i could have sworn the keys i was inputting fit properly into the available spaces, but since it hasn't worked for me who am i to say any thing.

DigitalP

welcome aboard! If u speak french i'm sure u enjoy most of these FTA channels more than us. i will send u a mail, with my email addy if u can send the patch to me. problem is my decoder doesn't seem to recognise softcams via usb anymore and if i try using usb to load a software it says insufficient memory. maybe i'll go get that rs232 cable after all. though i wonder why it should cost N1,000.

Enitan and Justx24

please understand, i am already receiving w3a, infact my signal levels are pretty higher than ever, MBC 1&2 are like 74%, Go AFRica, like 62%, and so on, ieven watched the last few champions league game and the EPL season finale on MBC2, i repeat, i have no problems receiving the satellite's beam at all. i was just posting my experience/observations that was all, but i thank you guys for your info just the same.

for those on nilesat and currently using the art showtime keys, are they still working? i think i might have messed up my decoder pretty earlier on cos it doesn't recognise the softcams i was trying to use for it so i couldn't use them. next, i opened the softcams on my laptop using notepad and was able to get the keys to input manually after accessing the menu using 8282, but after inputting them my signals are still scrambled. infact that was for show time, i just realised i wasn't receiving showsports and ART anymore, so u guys does it work for you?
Satellite TV TechnologyRe: Official Thread of Free-To-Air Satellite TV (Part 1) by Gangsta101(m): 1:34pm On May 12, 2008
hi all,

first of all let me say i don't have a problem receiving w3a, just that mine was initially tracked using amos 1/2 so i was wondering if that bird was rebroadcasting the w3a feeds, that was why i tried entering the info for go Africa as it was supposed to be broadcasted by w3a alone, and initially i didn't get any indo that was why i posted my observations, now i know better, the freq were just coinciding. i actually thot i was getting amos 1/2 because it is supposed to be on 4w.

so why is it that we can receive the eastern bird w3a while facing west? also, as i said in my previous post the signals are supposed to be H signals e.g go africa 11102 h 3208, but mine is 11102 V 3208 and if i try changing mine to H it tells me that sorry the same TP already exists.

i see art and showtime keys are now available, i will download the softcam and give. i do feel anyone who isn't getting nilesat is missing, it does have a great number of interesting channels, more than any availabel FTA sat in Nigeria, or at least i think so, and if u do buy the aljazeera card, u r covered for even sports (except for EPL of course) but then we have RDV don'twe?
Satellite TV TechnologyRe: Official Thread of Free-To-Air Satellite TV (Part 1) by Gangsta101(m): 1:39pm On May 08, 2008
hi people,

can't remember if i asked this question earlier and i am currently too busy to go back and read through several pages of post but, while trying to install W3A, my installer used Amos1/2 the israeli bird to track it, then switched to eutelsat w3a after he had left and continued searching before i got the rest of the channels.
the point is i am getting most of the w3a channels on amos 1/2 (except Go Africa). initially i thot it was just because i was entering similar freq that it was doin that but the fact that go africa isn't working makes that rather impossible. anyone receiving w3a should pls try and check this out and give me feedback ( remember i have a 1.8m dish faced towarrds nilesat and the w3a lnb is opp that of nss7). also my freq are all Vertical freq even though i know they should be \H.

does anyone have any explanation?

Hello Everyone

Enigma,
I have to say, u r the man, the way u seem to have a response to everything just kills my soul. just outta curiosity, how long have u been into this FTA business?

Twinstaiye,
About w3a and nilesat on the same dish, i thot i mentioned in an earlier post that that was what i was getting, along with Nss7. the only problem is that i had to give up the lnb i was using to get nss7 to use for tracking w3a cos the other messed up one ( costs N500) can't get tvm malagassy or Go Africa (which just so happens to be the bomb), now i can't get STV 1/2, RDV or Canal 2 inter, with the messed up lnb. anyways, as soon as i can squeeze out the time, i hope to get another lnb which someone says is very good for W3a and see how it pans out.

Everyone,
how about we list out every Bird we can get here in Nigeria and the available FTA channels, with their positions, elevations and azimuth and all what not, and stickey it to the top of the thread so everryone who comes in can have an easy reference to it, it also saves the time of having to answer the same questions every other time? think about it guys.

Hi guente,
sorry it took me a while to get back to you, i haven't checked up on this thread for a while now.
i personally don't know how to create an rs232 cable but u can always find such info on the net. i once saw a tutorial on an FTA site with a detailed description for creating one, but i caan't find the site anymore. what i do know is that the rs232 cable required for the strong decoder is a 15 - 9 pin setup. u can check out the connection listed on this site http://www.hardwarebook.info/Modem_(9-15) i hope it can be of help to u, that is if you can somehow lay your hand on the necessary components. all the best.
Satellite TV TechnologyRe: Official Thread of Free-To-Air Satellite TV (Part 1) by Gangsta101(m): 4:39pm On Apr 03, 2008
hi guys,
it's been a while. i see that the present FTA craze is eutelsat w3a (and the elusive foxsoccer again). i did track the w3a channel on my own this weekend cos i thought Go Africa was gonna be the bomb. i managed to get thru but with some disappointment. i used the lnb i was using for trend tv before they moved east ( a rather cheap lnb i must say), but i couldn't get it. so i sacrificed my nss7 lnb (cost about 1 grand) and i finally got it, but the problem is the two mbc channels which people say show premiership football are unavailable (that is the signal strength is too low) until about 10pm, by which time all football matches are over and they just hook up to bbc. go Africa is not a 24hr channel and generally my signal strength is pretty low. ( i am using a 1.8m dish faced at nilesat and i am in zaria).
, and after changing the lnb for nss7 i can't get stv1,2, rdv and canal2 until after 8pm, and i don't want to sacrifice my w3a so it's a rather annoying situation. i am wondering if i still need a better lnb for the w3anor if every one is having the same problem.
has anyone been able to track foxsoccer without turning the dish fully towards 55w?

i'm surprised the sites are not goin thru for u. what i suggest u do is to go to the UBA homepage, look for products and services , click on that, when that page opens, there will be three drop down menus, chck all three until u see umobile, select it. when u get there look for a line that says apply for product and i'm sure u can manage from there.

naijafan is right, u don't need to download a particular banks type of app to use it. the application is actually designed by interswitch and repackaged by other distributors. most banks don't even have it yet. most people just use the umobile suite on their phones. like this chic at my place, she's got three atm cards and umobile actually gives you the chance to install all three cards at once, and use them as u wish.

Viperman
when i was desperately trying to install umobile on my phone, i did come across etranzact, and i can remember thinking 'how many internet banking services ill one open up his or her acct to?" i mean if u have an ATM card, ur acct is already opened up to Interswitchng. to get the etranzact app, u have to get their own cash or debit card, which means opening yourself up to another service. now the question is how much can we rely on these guys? it has taken years to get our country's banking services to such a level of trustworthiness, but it would take a lot of faith to get me to open up to both services at once.
but on the other hand, what is ur experience with them?

PS: i am still looking out for a way past my number bug. that bluetooth keypad stuff sounds cool, but i think the bug has something to do with the app being installed on the wrong platform, cos there are several input options available on the pda, apart from the standard keyboard, and i have tried all of them to no avail, but i;ll give it a shot, if i can get it.

it will be rather difficult to list out all the supported devices. each bank seems to modify the generic mobilepay suite to it's own liking. i am only familiar with that for uba - umobile. to get a list of supported devices check out this link

the thing is i don't know anyone who has been able to install the z-mobile suite.

For those people who are always on the go, and constantly aare shiftng money from one form to another, this is probably the best thing that ever happened to nigerians - banking directly from your phone. you can do virtually everything from anywhere in the country without leaving your room. all you need is just GPRS connection. (well, almost anything except collect cash).
if electronic money is your thing, all you have to do is just install it. you can transfer money, recharge your phone, change our atm pin number e.t.c. and it is as safe as anything in this country.
the trouble is i, who has been singing its praise can't install it on my own phone. i use a tmobile mda (htc wizard) which by default is not supported by anyof the various platforms, and when i do install the ones made for other phones, i can't use it cos there's a bug which makes me unable to input the numbers 2 and 8, it reads it as the commands up or down as the case may be.
does anyone know how i may be able to fix this tiny glitch?

hi Enigma,
I did post a similar question on the FTA thread and u gave me some answers so I do know something about FTA now, but I sorta need to fine tune this knowledge.
let me give u some background:
I have a strong srt4651 with which I receive nilesat and nss7. l beliee the stations on nss7 are not available. but nilesat does include art and showtime the keys for which as I said earlier are occasionally available online (irdeto keys).
now let's say I get these keys as a string of alphanumerics, I know I hae to press 8282 to bring up the menu for entering keys. but this menus are arrange in ertical columns numbered one to 200. with different proiders listed on the horizontal rows, and sometimes (actually most times) some providers have more than one vertical row. now what is confusing me is does each vertical column correspond to a channel number or if I enter irdeto keys once I don't have to repeat it again and all the channels it can unlock just comes alive? also is the procedure the same for hex keys.

Hi Guruofsat
you do seem to know much about this fta mpeg2 stuff. but i don't understand your first post. i have a strong decoder. so what do i do with those keys u posted for strong? do i just enter 6969 and then try any one of those keys to see if it opens a scrambled channel? that would be the bomb though.
got another question for you, i posted it on the original FTA thread on this site, but got no response. everytime i check on the net, i see keys for unlocking certain satellite tv systems e.g. art, showtime, e.t.c. but how in God's name are they inputted into the decoder to get them to work. yes i know u type in t8282 0r 8280 to bring out the different menus but how does one progress from there? cos there are several vertical columns numbered 1 to 200 and then the horizontal columns for you to put in the codes. i guess what i'm asking for is a detailed step by step guide on how to input keys into a strong decoder. your help will be most appreciated.
