Air-conditioning. Air-conditioning failure . Factors that could contribute to Failure. Age of vehicle . Type of technology. Production / design defects . Procedure in previous Repairs . Vehicle age An Rx300 1998 @ over 200k miles with a stock air-conditioning system would easily have wear and tear issues surrounding the compressor and it's seals depending on where it was used. Used in Texas more wear, Used in Canada less wear, Used in the UAE more wear. Same with most vehicles over 20-30 years old with mileages over 200k. Mileage is not just the only factor, technology comes to play . Type of technology used Fixed and variable displacement compressors. In the late 90's car producers started fiddling with new designs of compressors, aim wAs to achieve better fuel economy and less drag on small displacement engine, target was to avoid the sudden drop in engine power when the compressor engaged. The solution started with variable displacement compressors without solenoids, but with a clutch so it can disengage. It was all mechanical, and it fared pretty well, Time passed and electronic solenoids were introduced to modify variation of the swashplate inside the compressor, it was a disaster for a lot of manufacturers , KIA/Hyundai got it WRONG their cheap Korean models (Rio, accent) from 2012-2015 were failing at under 31,000miles from factory, and no one took them to court (shame on the Nigeria Govt and SON) there were improvements with vehicles equiped with a clutch and the electronic solenoids, at least the compressor had less wear and tear .Toyota fared much better, getting at least 100-150k miles on the stock compressors of their corollas, camrys , and rav4s (mentioning popular models) but then the SA varients imported into the Nigerian market mostly failed under 60k miles (so much for standards) . To be fair to manufacturers , I have noticed a small trend. Most vehicles used in Lagos especially company pool vehicles suffer more ac related issues, than similar vehicle driven privately in say zamfara or sokoto. Primary reason, standstill traffic. Temperature at the condenser side of things will ultimately make or break the ac unit. Shout out to Honda, they were not affected by peer pressure and stuck to single displacement compressor (manual) over a wide range of their products except for the jazz city and most under 1.5L engines. Hondas have arguably the most efficient air-conditioning systems. Production / design defects . Some designs just left the shelve programmed to fail. Now we are not talking compressors anymore , let's look at other components of the HAVC system. Pipes: Back to that kia/Hyundai people, their pipes on the Rio 2007-11 would usually leak under 60k miles or 10years of use, (I own 2 units currently and dealt with the issue) Toyotas pretty solid, but the siennas from 1998-2010 had some really horrible corrosion related issues, better to just buy new pipes with that vehicle if you want to live long Expansion valves : pretty solid on most vehicles. Fans: Fans do not last forever, and up till now I do not know why modern vehicles are not equipped with early warning systems like rpm sensors that monitor fan operations and notify driver of failure, a lot of engines and acs would still be alive today. Remember I said vehicles driven in traffic prone conditions have a lower lifespan, well it all starts in the condenser, illustration for make sense , but you guys are not paying me well enough vehicles are equipped with single fans or dual fans, they do not last forever, My IX35 is 10 years old and 100k km and still on it's original factory cooling fans and starter motor. Quite frankly I am expecting carbon brush failure any moment from that system. When you have a 2 fab system, it's like having a backup, a smart driver should notice a drop in ac intensity especially when driving in slow moving conditions , a quick check should show 1 fan spinning and the other not. When you are unlucky and your manufacturer installed just 1 fan, and it fails or becomes intermittent and you do not notice on time, well first sign is the ac stops chilling each time the failure happens, next is coolant temp hits the redline and you know the rest. I think at this point, if you are not technically inclined and you do not like wahala, import brand new fan motors and have them installed you will get at least 60k miles out of them insha Allah. Compressors over flogged Evaporator A lot of manufacturers fail in this regard. The Camry 2007-2011 is a usual customer, the Highlander 2007-2013 usual customer, I guess you just need to know your brand and it's failure rate. Condenser : Apart from environmental factors and abuse + impact, never really seen a condenser fail. Electronics : The Kia Rio/Hyundai accent of 2012-2015 would have their wires melt at the condenser cooling fan area , I have seen this in vehicles under 20k km (No recall nothing ) , The controls of some vehicles stop working after several years. Still on electronics most times when you have compressor failure on most variable displacement compressors equipped with solenoids and flow sensors it's usually not the compressor that fails, but just the solenoid, and in some cases the flow sensor, lack of liver and affordable new parts scare technicians from replacing those parts ![]() All this was off the top of the dome, research the about air-conditioning failure in any model you want to buy high mileage with stock parts and vdc is a bad combination, always buy brand new VDC compressors , you will live longer, conversion is not an option . Interaction continues. |
