a flooded 2003 toyota camry or corrola has 3-5 modules/ECU.

1. Engine/transsmission ecu
2. Airbag ECU
3. (not all cases) ABS module.
4. (not in all cases) Immobilizer
5. A/C module.

To make this examples start, worst case replace engine ecu and imobilizer.

Its not a 1 size fits all.

For a 2017 avalon I do not have specifics on the number of electrical ecus/moduls vehicle is equiped with, but they are a lot. Car will definately start after replacing the right parts.

For flooded cars, the water level and type of water is very important.

Sea water contains high levels of salt, salt is very corrosive and begins a chemical reaction with almost every metal part in the vehicle (incuding wiring)

Fresh water is friendly and not as harmful.

Next is water getting into engine and transmission.

Transmissions are not sealed units, they contain air vents to let out air or excessive fluid. Hopefully the design on this would be a 1 way valve, if not water that can get to door level, will enter tranmission.

Water getting into engine, not a problem, engine is alluminum, just pour a little oil into the bores while rotating and siezure should clear up. (remove sparkplugs while rotating engine)

It is heart breaking to see a modern day car running with christmas lights.

If carbon enter combustion chamber no be for am to commot for exhaust? I am just asking o. You can losen spark plugs to avoid a hydrolock and disconnect catalysts to avoid premature burnout while proceedure is on.

When I turn off ignition in my toyota camry 1996, the engine still runs for like 2 secs and the exhausts still bring out gases like twice, shakes a little and turn off. This just started suddenly without anyone working on the car.

1. Excessive carbon buildup in a very hot engine

2. Fans wired directly to ignition.

if only when a.c is on, possible culprits are a dirty condenser, faulty radiator, fans spinning in wrong direction

We talked about sludge before and how it affects the engine, now lets talk about the engine.

Before we do let me state a few facts.

1. That an engine had been previously dissasembled does not make it bad.

2. That a head gasket had been changed from stock steel type to composite graphite does not make it bad.

3. That the mating parts of an engine has residue of our generic silicone gum on its surfaces does not make it a bad engine.

More details tomorrow when I have pics to explain further.

Automatic Transmissions and transaxles.

When I am really interested in buying a car, I always go along with a little money to buy petrol.

The resason is simple, you get to drive with a sense of entilement, and no complaints from seller.

Transmission colour should be bright pink when new, and turns brown when old. When it becomes black you are on a border line, a drain and refill might work, or might cause issues. Some transmissions are sensitive to very dirty oil e.g camry 2007-2010 V6/I4, they are also expensive replacements.

Some other transmissions are not sensitive and replacement cost is cheaper than a smart phone grin

E.g kia rio 2006-2011 (25-35k toks)

Now short drive tests might reveal nothing in a defective gearbox, but hard driving on long stretches of roads 10-20km might reveal a slipping or jerking transmission, especially for transmissions that behave well when cold, you should test all drive patterns (Hard, slow, stop and go.) with that you should be able to tell if you have a good transmission.

Also learnt to count gears. If a Gearbox is 5speed, and it is not CVT, you should be able to feel 5 shifts and notice RMP changes as gears shift.

Ensure you have a small scanning device that can scan transmission.

Also ask educated questions about oil transmission oil changes, it will be sad if a car drives fine and oil is bright pink only for it to fail after 3 months of use because abro atf was poured into a 2008 toyota camry transmission. sad

Same with transaxles, when test driving wind up, turn off the music and ac and listen to any abnormal sounds.

Good day All, I have a Civic 99 model at every morning when I start the engine I used to experience some knocking sound from the engine, the sound increase when a push the gear level to either D or R. I used quartz 5000.

Check bolts on torque converter they might be loose.

All set back to factory specs. Idle speed 800rpm

Went for test drive, blue light goes off in 6mins, 90deg achieved in 9mins.
