ileoloyin: Dear Gazzuzz,
Great job you 're doing on this thread.
I am contemplating buying a Naija-used Volkswagen Passat FSI 2.0. ltr (07-09). Please what are the upsides and downsides of this brand/model? What should I look out for? Cost of parts? Availability of technical expertise for maintenance and repairs? Would you consider this a low or mid maintenance car (as a reference, my last car was a Toyota Avensis 04).
I will appreciate your response.
Thanks its a whole new ball game. You will need speciallized mechanics, you cannot abuse engine oil grade or type required, parts are a bit pricy and available only in 1 place (itire) and sold by a select few. |

If I may add, this incident usually wud occur even without the beam on, the headlights just seem to easily trigger it. The sensation is usually as if the brakes are sticking while in motion but comes with a cracking sound.

Chikebrain: I used to have same error on my camry 05 i4. I bought another catalyst converter but the sensor wire cut and my mechanic fixed the sensor on the previous catalyst converter to the one I bought. No code came out for about a week. The check light came on and when I scanned it I got the P2423 (HC Adsorption Catalyst Efficiency Below Threshold Bank 1) code. I've changed spark plug, cleaned out injector, checked if there's a leakage in the exhaust but everything seems to be fine. My issue is the fact that my fuel burns out quickly.
My question: Could the 02 sensor be the cause of this P2423 as I put the old one. Would I get better fuel efficiency if I change it?
Didn't want to start another thread as this thread could serve as a fountain of knowledge for related issues

b0y: Greetings Gazzuzz and thanks for your immense support on this thread. You've also helped once with my Acura Tsx 2005 that's experiencing transmission slipping which was replaced almost a year ago on your advice.
Right now, I've got the following issues with the car and I'd like for u to please assist.
1. I noticed lately that the car decelerates sharply (as though the brake were engaged) whenever I try to flash beam my headlights at a vehicle ahead or press the horn. The sharp deceleration sometimes comes with a crackling/disintegrating sound that looks like it's from the front wheels. This happens briefly and the car gets moving again.
2. Lately also, whenever I'm in motion, at about 60 - 80, car vigorously vibrates briefly and goes to normal again. I changed the shaft cups about 5 months before and the effect that made me change them is not the same effect I'm getting now.
Your usual assistance will be appreciated. a. Do you have aftermarket lighting installed? E.g neon lights. If you do disconnect and try again.

Gilbertase: If in 2017, you own a car and you dont have a portable diagnostic car scanner you can use for your car, then OYO is ur case o. Enough has been said about the immense benefits of having such a device. Also, because i have done the research which you may verify, i wouldnt advice bluetooth scanners, for the prime reason that obd was designed to be accessed 'locally', but bluetooth or wireless obd's bring with it the risk of remote access by other nearby bluetooth or wireless devices, unlike a phone where you can set limits to the discoverability. That being said, own an OBD scanner, scan ur cars, save your money, save your car, and save the heartbreak of leaving the fate of your car solely in a 'kazeems' hands. Red flags to look our for in an engine when buying a car.
Preferably do not rush to start engine, check engine oil level via dipstick, if engine oil colour is very new, be careful! Engine might have been recently rebuilt. Most people who want to sell their cars, do not bother with engine oil changes, and just want to sell of and allow new user do the needful.
Engine oil level should preferably be close to the upper mark on the dipstick, if on the lower mark, engine is either burning oil or leaking oil.
Oil colour should not be black, this signifies abuse by user or a sludge buildup or oil burn. Engine oil colours to look out for are clear, brown, honey gold, dark brown.
Try and avoid black.
Next do a visual inspection of engine, look out for fresh silicone gum.
When engines are built stock, there is a particular colour/weight of silicone gasket maker used on mating surfaces. www.nairaland.com/attachments/6233514_img20171106142931_jpeg0f50b2a0e57bbbb3b12afec76c8210bd

When engine is brand new, colour is off-white / light grey.
Now what you are looking out for is stock silicone over flow from oil pan, timing chain cover, and possible oil pump areas if visible.
In this part of the world we do not have easy access to same type of factory silicone used so if engine has been worked on in the past, you might get to see colours like black, blue, clear, white...... if you find this on areas like timing chain cover, engine oil pan, it signifies previous work on engine.
Also look out for no silicone . Sounds funny, but yes. When working some technicians clean off excess flow of silicone after it cures, giving a better aesthetic look. No silicone on mating surface means engine was worked on previously.
Samples engine with previous work www.nairaland.com/attachments/6233555_img20171109125131_jpeg238bab782d37106ef0072e0d23f66344

www.nairaland.com/attachments/6233554_img20171109130332_jpeg01bc0b8683b039465f9d45f7bef6d984
Next inspect the head gasket...
All engines leave the factory with steel type head gasket. It is extremely flat and made out of metal.
https://www.dragzine.com/wp-content/blogs.dir/1/files/2016/04/2016-04-04_19-48-37.jpg
In most cases when an engine is rebuilt or if it suffers overheating, the gasket is replaced with composite type, usually made from graphite. This gasket is thicker and can be easily identified.
https://www.victorreinz.com/img_cpm/002/images/TSI/tsi_3_Weichstoff-Zylinderkopfdichtung_mit_gespiesstem_Traegerblech_EN_large.jpg
Next inspect for engine oil leaks....
Some oil leaks are expected in high mileage engines, from valve cover gaskets and oil seals. But the cost of fixing a oil leaks vary. While it might cost you about 5k for a valve cover oil leak and take about 30mins to replace on a 4cylinder, a crankshaft oil leak coming from the flywheel area of a V8 will require and engine drop and might cost you over 50,000 in labour costs so it is essential to avoid the costly leaks
Let me also mention that finding transmission oil leaks from flywheel area in this part of the world is a death sentence to the transmission (Gearbox) as only a few people I know can source the correct parts and install torque converter seals properly.
Next look out for different colours......
When an engine leaves the factory (most recent full aluminium engines) they look like this.....www.nairaland.com/attachments/6233574_img20170928184845_jpeg6d3a042b41f9f3ff39cd15999fc3a8afwww.nairaland.com/attachments/6233577_img20170928184756_jpeg5bf247ce91cff4ddd1b5fc3fef7cb4a0www.nairaland.com/attachments/6233581_img20170928184940_jpeg2470277a196c77495270251720108061
Not every engine is made of aluminium, some have steel/cast block engines and aluminium tops.
Now when inspecting and you find one part newer than the other, it signifies a part was replaced. It is normal to replace a defective part, e.g starter motor, water pump, p/s pump, alternator... but when the timing chain cover is newer than the cylinder, or the cylinder is newer than the aluminium block, then a serious operation took place in the life of the vehicle. If she's been bleaching, don't take her home
Next check coolant level and type......
If water is used, owner is not the careful type, not a death sentence, but better if you observe coloured coolant.
If coolant or water is below normal level in the radiator, there is a problem, there might be a leak or engine burning coolant .
Next open boot and go through all the stuff in it, it most times reveals the life support vehicle gets
Let me explain further...
If you find cans of brake oil, powersteering oil, engine oil, small keg of water, sparkplugs, coils, ATF.... it is either owner meticulously keeps them for just in case, or na daily topping ritual
Now time to start the engine............

GAZZUZZ: We talked about sludge before and how it affects the engine, now lets talk about the engine.
Before we do let me state a few facts.
1. That an engine had been previously dissasembled does not make it bad.
2. That a head gasket had been changed from stock steel type to composite graphite does not make it bad.
3. That the mating parts of an engine has residue of our generic silicone gum on its surfaces does not make it a bad engine.
More details tomorrow when I have pics to explain further. |

Meanwhile he changed the compressor, condenser and drier at the same time. Am really in a fix on what to do. He is advicing that I buy a new compressor and condenser and that he will have to flush the system again. Am confused. If the bolded is correct, you got a defective, or not properly refurbished compressor. It happens a lot. Supplier of part caused this issue. |

obekediamondfuto: oga boss throw more light on the no2 I'd like to know how directly connected fans can cause the dieseling effect I explained on another thread previously, but ill explain again.
The fans were wired to (inintion power supply ) directly. To stop an engine from running, you shut down powersupply to engine ecu, coils and any accessories that utilze inition for engine to run.
Fans are usually connected via a series of relays, that way it can be controled (turned off and on) it is also connected to a resistor (not every car), resistor determines speed of fan (slow/fast speeds)
In this particular case, power source to engine ECU and accessories were connected straight to fan (went to jail did not pass go).
With ignition off, fans did not stop spinning, and generated powersupply for a short period of time which kept engine alive.
A fan can actually be reverse engineered to become a small turbine (power generator) |

Scammer: Lots Of Hulabaloo here, Let's keep decorum.. Car is meant for my personal use. If you won't buy a flooded car, Your choice, Each person is entitled to their own opinion. I'm buying a Toyota which is a basic vehicle with few modules, the car is a Win Win. If it runs or not.
People bid as high as $40K USD For flooded cars whose real value is between 70-80k Usd. If you don't buy it someone else will, And i definitely know what i'm getting into.
Do you know the cost a limited avalon with all options ticked?
Like elshanautos mentioned, The car will definitely run and drive perfectly again. It wasn't submerged or buried in the OCEAN , It's slightly flooded...
Flooded car can be a blessing or a curse. There are rules. Make sure they are run and drive, If it's a non starter, Make sure to know the water level. Avoid flooded benz or bmw They have more dangerous electronics and modules.
Fingers are crossed, when vehicle arrives In Benin. It will be inspected and diagnosed there first. I suggest you should leave vehicle in lagos.some parts might be equired that can only be gotten in lagos. Some parts might be used for just testing purposes and returned to seller, some parts might need to be replaced if they do not work. Best place to do that is as close to seller of part as possible. Unless if you intend importing all parts required online.
Good luck |
