He meant "using a Golf 4 shouldn't be for first timers. Look for something less complex"

I'm also a first timer and considering a 1997 Honda Accord (aka bulldog) 2.3L 4cyl V-TEC 5 speed automatic.

Car fits into my budget as a freelancer/student
I'm 22. Would love to keep the car through the period of at least 5yrs moving around for business and till I'm done with schooling. Location is Lagos.

Common expected problems
What year to avoid
Any other close substitutes?

It is a 4cylinder 2.3liter engine in comparison with newer vehicles, of same engine size not very fuel efficient. Used parts like O2 sensors and catalytic converters to keep the emission low, are almost impossible to buy now, you are stuck with sourcing them online ur self, as no part dealer stocks those parts anymore.

Nice car, problem you will have in the very near future is scarce tokumbor parts... they are gradually disappearing..... i

Parts that fail frequently are the timing belt (easily avoidable) exhaust system, rust on suspension parts.

The first models 1995 should be avoided, they do not come with OBD ports.

Personally I would avoid this car due to its age, go go for somthing newer like a kia rio 2007. You can get a nigerian used one at 600-1M dependent on how clean.

I have problems starting my car the first time everyday. It usually makes some funny sound from the kick or no sound at all before it starts after a few trials.
The thing is that after it starts, I have no problem with starting it again for that day. This has made it difficult for my mechanic and electrician to detect the fault because each time I go to the workshop, the car starts properly.
I had to change the full kick sometime ago and the problem stopped. but now it started again with the new kick.

pls what could be the problem?
No village people are involved, buy a good starter motor.

GAZUZZ, please what's the best engine oil for VW golf 4?
What's your take on the fuel economy of the same car model.
Basic oil type for that vehicle is synthetic 5w30

Fuel economy is great, but also dependent on the engine size you decide to go with.

UPDATE:

Not sure what this test is called but the mecho tried to test every spark plug in the cylinders and noticed one of them wasn't responding which would mean that the intake valve isn't properly sitting or something could be wrong with it. Dude had to break the engine apart again and removed the cylinder. Lo and behold the valve was badly burned from the overheating which caused it to malfunction.

Problem solved, check engine light not flashing and vibration has greatly reduced but I'm still yet to feel the smoothness of my car. My guess is the piston did not return to its factory state, does it mean I will never feel the original smoothness ever anymore?

SUMMARY

A faulty radiator cap caused me time, lots of cash and a week of being immobile. Anyone ever been more unfortunate?
Mechanic did not follow proper procedure for sever overheating. He was supposed to grind valves, and resurface bank1 and 2 cylinders.

Any one be more unfortunate? Yes I have lost an engine more than once to overheating.

blinking check engine light is a sign of a misfire.

Do a cylinder drop test, it might be as simple as a non responsive sparkplug.

semid4lyfe:
NL Auto mechanics,

I greet you specially.

I had an accident with my 2002 Toyota Camry V6 November last year. The car skidded off the road into a bush and the exhaust got extensively damaged with grass and leaves tucked into it. Catalytic converter, exhaust pot were replaced and some welding work was done.

Since then, fuel consumption has gone over the roof and scanning has revealed p1135 (A/F Sensor Circuit Heater Malfunction Bank 1 Sensor 1) and p1155 (A/F Sensor Circuit Heater Malfunction Bank 2 Sensor 1) error codes.

I do not believe the A/F sensors have gone bad cos it's unlikely for the two A/F sensors at different locations to go bad at the same time. Also, the same p1135 and p1155 codes were present when I first got the car and you said I might need to change the sensors but the error codes disappeared after exhaust work and the sensors were not changed.

I've had 2 other panel beaters/mechanics examine the exhaust and test drive, and they all tell me, "Oga, your exhaust is fine. No let anyone take you chop". They say there's no popping sound when starting the car, no visible leaks and the exhaust is breathing fine.

However, the slight stalling I experience when accelerating (not all the time and not too often), the increased grunt, decreased power & acceleration and the now excessive fuel consumption make me believe all is not well with my car. (Car did not have these issues before the accident).

I don tire, and I wan park the car as the fuel consumption don dey dig hole for my pocket. I'll be glad if I can be pointed in the right direction to get the problem fixed once & for all.

NB: I am in Abakaliki, Ebonyi State.

cc: GAZZ.UZZ, cardo.ctor, king.rein, Hon.musa, nu.rey, may.or2013
The codes are specific (HEATER CIRCUIT)

The following could have happened.

1.Harness was yanked from socket by force during the accident, and the panel beater installed them back wrongly.

2. O2 sensors damaged.

3. O2 sensors not connected

4. Engine ecu not powering heater circuit on.
O2 sensor.

For analysis of these conditions you would have to have a scanner and a multemeter.

How far is PH from abakiliki?

Hello kashif, been following your thread for a while and i feel proud to know you have been quite diligent with this.

I took my car to Apo mechanic village Abuja for some job to be done, its a 1999 toyota corona manual gear box. When the job was done, out of curiosity, i ask the mechanic to drain the oil from the gear box and i was surprised about 5 table spoon of oil came out.

Lucky me you can say. The mechanic said i should tke it to some to fill it up for me, when i got there, he was not around and out of curiosity, i asked his boiz what type of oil they use. He said grease mixed with transmission fluid.

My brother i weak. Now my question. Whats the rationale behind that mix? I know grease does not transmit or take away heat very well.

I need the experts to discuss this.

Hi my boss at gazzuz

I want to do some servicing for my baby , a Camry 07 that has served me so diligently. Since I got it 4-5yrs ago no issues, but its beginning to show some signs of fatique. D legs r beginning to make some wobbly noise though on rough roads only. And I notice that when I hit d brakes after doing abt 100km/hr, d car vibrates violently.

Pls advice me on d following because d different mechanics I've tried to consult hv all given me different diagnosis .
1. What shocks r d BEST , new or Belgium, if new where can I get ORIGINAL new shocks.
2. What could be causing d violent vibration when I hit d brakes at 100kmh.
3. D oil level drops every month but it doesn't smoke or drop anywhere, apart from d bottom plate that is constantly soaked with oil. I've been using it like dis since I bought it but I think d level of shortage has increased abit.

Ur expert advice would be greatly appreciated
KYB from a trusted source

Replace brake disks or resurface if within safe limits.

Oil drop is normal on the 07 camry with the 2az-fe engine ignore it and keep topping if it goes too low.

Are you sure your struts are bad? Sway bar bushings, links, tie rod ends and joints are usual culprits for camrys after extended use on nigerian roads.
