Me: I chose the University because the industrial engineering programs has a added concentration on Operations research and manufacturing which are my core areas of interest. Apart from being among the top ranked universities in the US( I sha chop mouth here)

VO: Where are you working now:

Me : I work as a specialist Engineer in my company name: I quickly brought out my reference letter to give him , he said don’t worry.

VO : what area of engineering do you work?

Me: Telecommunications

VO; Nodes his head? What will you be doing after your program:

Me: My company is currently expanding into a few Africa countries and we plan to build over 5,000 telecommunications towers for the 5G technology in Nigeria. I intend to lead a technical role and it opens more opportunities for me.

VO: nodes his head still typing

VO: who is sponsoring you?

Me: my brother in-law mr Xyz

VO: what does he do?

Me: he is so so so in so so bank. I brought out the documents but he didn’t want to see them

VO: Keeps typing and typing and typing while we watch. Then the rejection line with blue paper.

I sha feel I didn’t answer my question as I planned due to fear. Almost 6 people ahead of me were denied due to that first question of travel history.

If I could make a few quick observations here:

It looks normal in Nigeria for a brother to sponsor a sibling abroad for a graduate study, but it's not normal in the US. It attracts curiosity.

You have a full time job and income with a family and responsibilities to take care of. On the interviewer's mind, why go for a graduate program if you haven't saved enough money to sponsor yourself? Why is your brother shouldering your responsibility? In most cases, only parents do that for their children if the children can't afford it for themselves. Remember, it's a graduate program, not a bachelor's degree which is more essential. Let's assume that your brother earns N 2 million naira a month and can afford to gift you half of his salary (N 1 million naira) every month from the graciousness of his heart, it's still only $2,000 which may cover just a little more than your monthly rent for a 2 bedroom apartment in the US. Usually, people work and save for a few years before going for a graduate program, or they take a student loan. In this case, there was no indication that your brother loaned you the money.

As a student you're limited to 20 hours of work a week or so, and let's assume your wife has to work full time to augment or provide for the family while you're schooling, who takes care of the baby while you're both out of the house? Can you afford day care with your combined income? Nannies are expensive in the US, it's not like in Nigeria where one can easily afford them. On the interviewer's mind, if you are the major provider for your family and you're in school, how will you provide for your family especially since you're not sponsoring yourself? In reality, this is a big move for someone to be making when they have responsibilities.

All these added to the high immigration rate from Nigeria are probable causes for the denial.

The travel history doesn't appear to be a major factor of consideration especially for student visa applications. It could be more of a factor used for tracking crimes (e.g. drug related) because criminal organizations recruit people to pose as travelers in various forms. When they asked your wife where she traveled and what she did, they input this data into the system and some artificial intelligence software will analyze the data and that's one way some people can get flagged for further search at the port of entry. I don't think your travel history counted against you for the student visa application.

I wasnt the only one filed for. My sister was equally filed for in 2016.

However, she is now married with a-7 month old son.

On the contrary, she has not filled her DS-260 form or submitted any documents online to the NVC site.


Recently, her international passport expired and she has just paid for the renewal of her international passport to change her name to her husband's name. She has equally done her NIN in her husband's name.

Now that we understand the delay that comes with being married and having a child, she has some questions.

Her question is: does she still have the opportunity of sticking to being an F1 applicant? If yes, what are her chances? Should she do another passport and stick with her maiden name and apply as an F-1, and later on invited her husband and her son when she is in the US? She is worried about her young marriage and her fragile son.

She is the fearful type, and won't want to get into early problems with the US immigrations. I am the one encouraging her to be bold and fearless unfortunately I am not harmed with information to help her in this daredevil stunt.


Please help her. She is a sad, unemployed postgraduate in Nigeria

What can she do?

Whether she stays with her maiden name or uses her husband's name, it doesn't matter, her category has changed due to the marriage. She can get in trouble with immigration later on. It can be a reason to revoke her green card or even citizenship. See these links I posted earlier:

You are right. However, some countries won't accept it. I think due to WES evaluation, only US currently accepts it. I once applied to a sch in Canada and I was told it's not acceptable.
I've tried to find out the status of the certificate and discovered that we are virtually the only country issuing it, others have done some modification, while we choose to get stuck in the mud.

This is part of the problem. If you apply to the school without first evaluating your degree, some/many schools do not have internal credential evaluation departments so they will likely reject your degree. That's why there are accredited credential evaluation organizations like WES in the US and Canada. You evaluate your credentials first with them, then apply to the school with the evaluated credential. You'll be surprised the same college will accept it.

both HND and BSc graduates are equivalent in the US and accepted for Master's degrees with no discrimination

Worth asking because most HND holders I know go on to enroll for Bsc degrees too. No foreign University will admit you for a masters program with a HND. So maybe there is a reason for it.

US colleges and universities accept HND graduates directly for MSc programs. World Education Services (WES) is one of the organizations who evaluate Nigerian degrees for advanced degrees in the US. If you have completed 120 credit hours at a college in Nigeria, your credential is evaluated as equivalent to a US degree and you're accepted directly into a Master's program.

Content Management systems give you the basics for building websites and sometimes you need components or modules built by other programmers to achieve additional functionality. If you use these additional modules or components, how do you troubleshoot errors and maintain the websites you build when you do not understand programming? All you can do is build, but if those components built by others have issues or get abandoned, depending on the level of complexity of the website, then you're stuck. besides if you're building relatively easy websites, they can also be built using systems like wix and this is a lot of competition for you.

It would usually take a few days to update your profile after they receive the package, but i would suggest reaching out to them to confirm what's causing the delay, bearing in mind we're facing unusual circumstances and there may be layoffs and limited work hours that could possibly delay service delivery from organizations.

OP Having a high intelligence quotient (IQ) doesn't mean you'll beat everyone at everything, especially if you don't have the same level of preparation as them. They beat you because they did something you didn't do or think about, get over it and get on to the next challenge. Some years from now, you probably will not remember your UME score (whatever it's called now), but you'll have a degree certificate and that's what you should be focused on from this moment.

Maybe Unilag is waiting for you to pay verification fees? I was in your shoes, though different schools. I was waited for months for my school to verify transcripts, only to realize that they dumped it aside, waiting for me to come pay verification fee. It seems most schools charge verification fees.

So if you can't get them on the phone, try go down there yourself or ask someone to go on your behalf. Its frustrating, but that's how a lot of Nigerian institutions are structured.

I sense that he is not terribly comfortable with "deep" conversation which may be the deal-breaker since I'm pretty forward and transparent.

I am going to give it " a bit" more time to see if anything changes because he is pretty amazing and we have great chemistry. On the other hand, I won't delay for long because I don't really have to. I was single before him and life is GOOD! I can go back to that if necessary.

You may want to give this time to get to know him better. He probably knows what you want in a partner (i'm guessing since you're great with communication), do you know what he wants in a partner and his expectations for marriage? Can you ask him in a way that doesn't explicitly infer that you're trying to see if you fit in that picture? I am guessing he would want you to have some affinity with his kids as well because this isn't really just about him now. Many Nigerians also do have affinity to their cultures which means things like food, language and interest in things about Nigeria play a large role in developing a bond with a Nigerian man.

When we are "in person" he is super chatty and has such amazing energy but he does have an immigrant mentality which means he works A LOT.

I am not sure if he communicated this explicitly to you, but, working hard is something many Nigerians do in Nigeria as well

I don't see a need for the label here, some Nigerian ladies can be forward as well so this isn't peculiar to anyone, really . I'd just find out what his expectations are for the woman he wants to get married to, understand his values and see if they match with yours. Talk about sensitive topics like divorce, gender roles, societal issues as well, see if you both share similar values.
