Politics › Waku: "Drink Your Oil, We Would Eat Our Yams", Arewa Chieftain Tells Niger Delta by gevans(op): 10:46pm On Jun 05, 2016
Senator Joseph Kennedy N Waku, (JKN Waku), the stormy petrel of the Middle Belt was elected senator for the Benue North West Constituency of Benue State, on the platform of the Peoples Democratic Party, PDP in 1999. Not long after she came into national renown following his controversial call for a military coup on the claim that President Olusegun Obasanjo was derailing the democracy project. Since then he has been an unrepentant critic of President Obasanjo, and a major political figure in the North. Waku is not only a chieftain of the ruling All Progressives Congress, APC but also of the Arewa Consultative Forum, ACF. In this interview, he speaks on current national issues. Excerpts:

By Joseph Erunke

What is your reaction to the renewed insurgency by militants in the Niger Delta?

In the first place, what were the offences committed by these people before they were pardoned? Are they not criminals? If I were the president, I would jail them.

So, are you ruling out dialogue as proposed by some people as a way of resolving the problem?

What kind of dialogue? Let them bring to table what they want. Let them do what they are doing, they will also suffer it. Are they also not suffering when they ruin the economy? Are they not facing the same problem like you and I? They are talking of marginalization today.

If you create Biafra today, is Biafra solidly Igbo’s? It’s not. When you go there, you would find a southern minority who will tell you that they don’t want to be part of it, even among the Igbo. Some Igbo will tell you that they don’t want it. If there is definitive kind of discrimination against certain segments of the country, that needs to be addressed because injustice creates dissatisfaction. If there have been injustices against one particular group in this country, let’s address it and not by taking the law into their hands.

That is criminality. We are also affected but we want to take it in a matured approach. You cannot go and begin to destroy state apparatus in order to achieve your agitation, it is against the law. I am not in a position to talk about which contract was revoked because I am not involved in that.

If those contracts were illegally awarded without going through the due process and the current administration wants to follow due process, what is bad about that? Go and do your investigation on that contract to see whether the old law that qualifies one for such contracts were made. What do you award contracts to militants for? In the first place, the name ‘militant’ is criminality. It is only this country that somebody will come back and say I am a militant and then ‘you award him contract.’ If they claim to be agitators as they are saying, then let them come out with their demands and not by holding the state to ransom.

Now, how would you want the government to handle this situation?

My advice is that you can’t take government for ransom. If their livelihoods have been damaged considerably by the pipelines and they have nowhere to go, let there be adequate compensation to them. It is not to take laws into their hands. And by the way, let me be honest with you, this is natural resources; nobody owns it and nobody farms it but by virtue of the location that you find yourself. If there is ecological diversification and you need to do something for your livelihood, then you table this issue to the federal government so that there would be amicable resolution

Giving the adverse effects of their actions, will it not be better to seek dialogue?

What do they need? Let them come out and tell government that ‘this has been our farmland, it has been devastated, we have no land to farm anymore’ and then bring a proposal to the federal government. This is how it should be done than issuing threats. If I were the president, I would have ended that thing by now.

How would you have done it?

Yes, by closing the whole thing down. Before oil came, didn’t this country exist? So, what are you talking about? We have been blindfolded and Nigeria became so lazy, a nation of cheap money. Before the oil, we had cocoa, we had palm oil, groundnut and pyramid, and those were the things that actually helped to develop the oil.

At a point, we in Benue challenged them that okay,’ let them go and drink their oil, we would eat our yams and then see who will survive.’

Can we have the breakdown of the recovered loot on ethnic, gender and religious basis! After all, those who returned looted funds must belong to any of the three categories. My mind is telling me that a particular tribe looted the most and a particular religion looted small amount!! Presidency, please, give us the information pronto or I will invoke the provisions of freedom of information bill!!!

I m disappointed by this reasons given, they should have make their Names public to act as a deterrent to other persons, thieves should b treated like a thief not this coded type of treatment.
if it were to be a poor person that stole phone for instance, n wz caught, would have been made public. I disagree with them for this reason. let me ask this question, is it d recovery of only d money that matter most? or recovery d money and impacting the fear of stealing on the citizens?

Politics › Another Open Letter To Pmb From Nuesa President, Fupre by gevans(op): 11:19pm On Jun 04, 2016
ANOTHER OPEN LETTER TO PMB FROM THE OFFICE OF THE PRESIDENT NIGERIAN UNIVERSITIES ENGINEERING STUDENTS ASSOCIATION, FEDERAL UNIVERSITY OF PETROLEUM RESOURCES, EFFURUN, AKA NSE FUPRE

Dear PMB,

Today is one year and five days since we celebrated our victory, a common sense revolution, the birth of a new nation with a new possibility of living without regional and tribal walls and barriers, a nation that succeeded in placing ‘office of the citizen’ above ‘office of the president’.

We then fought tyranny and oppression with you as center of political gravity, it was easier then; when a bad leader messes-up he gives his people a new hope to unite against him. But it is more difficult now because when a good leader messes-up he creates hopelessness; the kind that is making many of us prefer to live in denial of our present reality and think there is still future under current situation.

We will be unfair to you if we ask for tiles and marbles at this moment in time but we at least need to see clearly where we are going. Our country cannot be run by patience and goodluck, and not by mere goodwill, hope and expectations, it should be run by good actions.

I prefer not to remind you of the implications of your failure on the region where you came from because the lessons of your victory shows that Nigerians can go any length to get what they want. I rather remind you that your failure will spell doom for the pride of Africa.

Remember how people got bombed in polling stations and yet others continued to vote, pregnant women delivered on queue and yet caste their votes. Remember how our legislators had to climb gates to their own chambers, how state governors had to jump airport walls to escape impunity and how 16 became greater than 19. How a reserve-bank governor relinquished his job, a state governor became a hostage, a former president became your spokesman and nearly ended his watch, elder statesmen took side, a soldier took exile and a reporter risked his life.

Remember how Nigerians in Diaspora lived with their bodies in another country but their minds at home, your supporters from east and south lived as traitors in their own lands, those from west lived as competitors sacrificing their own choice, those from the north became a target, and how people that cannot afford food were rushing to support your campaign with funds. Remember how Nigerians all over welcomed u with chairs and with tears and how they celebrated crazily at your victory.

Today probably someone has told you that all these people do not want your success or that they do not matter. It is absurd that “the same government which received the tumultuous welcome now became alienated from the people”.

In a world where 1% population is richer than the rest a socialist president with a high sense of integrity is no doubt a jewel. In the past 366 days you have done well in some aspects; fighting terrorism to a standstill, fighting institutionalized looting to a retreat, and living modestly as a humble and cherished president, but the way you run our economy is the example of how not to run an economy, completely isolating the bond between people, their economy and their governance. An analysis of how your idea has never worked will be left for another day in order not to bore you with figures and mathematics, but it is clear that your economic policies are impacting negatively on domestic production.

"The last twe*lve months have not witnessed any significant changes in the national economy. Contrary to expectations, we have so far been subjected to a steady deterioration in the general standard of living; and intolerable suffering by the ordinary Nigerians have risen higher, scarcity of commodities has increased, hospitals still remain mere consulting clinics, while educational institutions are on the brink of decay. Unemployment has stretched to critical dimensions."

‘After dutifully intervening to save your country from collapse the economy has not been given a new impetus and better sense of direction’. The spirit of unity that you came with has long been turn on its head, Buhari boom has become Buhari burst, and the ‘change begins with you’ campaign due to high spirit of the populace is no more there. Favoritism has continued, with recruitment scam in CBN and elsewhere. Economic injustice has been institutionalized with a financial cabal taking our economy hostage.

In your first coming you did many of the things you are doing today and eventually they failed, not only because your friends betrayed you but because the people had reached their natural limits and had to create a political opportunity to at least change their state of mind and create a new hope for themselves, and to avert what your brother in 1985 called ‘a systematic denigration of that hope’, subjecting the common man to ‘intolerable suffering’, insinuating that “initial objectives were betrayed and fundamental changes do not appear on the horizon”.

The common man you wished to protect was forced by you to create an opportunity for your enemies, our enemies- to enslave us further, premising that “The principles of discussions, consultation and co-operation which should have guided decision-making process” were disregarded.

Could it be possible that a man hasn’t learned anything in decades?

As I approach dropping my pen I remember growing as a child, how our parents could afford decent life despite been modest civil servants, farmers or business men and women. I remember how I used to buy a gum for 1kobo and received 499kobo change which I could not spent.

The results of your good intentions-highly mismanaged gave criminals the opportunity to ruin our lives. Our parents who served their country with all they have, had to live in the same economy with thieves who stole in millions and billions. I fear getting held-up in the middle of a vicious circle, but I fear even more for my children and those children unborn.

The Archer will never fail on his promises, and not on a promise of change, but he is too forward thinking on his target that he forgets his own cover, missing the links of the future from the present, and too naïve that he forgets he is not alone in this world of opportunism. Knowledge is key since it fuels his broad-minded approach to life, the best way out is to talk to people and find some answers.

My prayer as I say goodbye is that you will meditate on the consequences of your failure, realize the greatness of an opportunity that will never repeat itself again and begin listening to people that made the huge sacrifices, do the simple things that make the difference, the simple things that can make everyone happy, those things that will keep us together as a nation.

We have experimented ‘politics of religion’, ‘politics of ethnicity’, ‘politics of regionalism’, and ‘politics of belief’ and they have all failed. It is time we experiment ‘politics of nationalism’, ‘politics of patriotism’ and ‘politics of reason’.

May the lives of our patriots that died in the good cause of bringing positive change rest in perfect peace, the wounded relieved by God’s special grace, and may Nigeria live forever and prosper.

"This generation of Nigerians and indeed future generations have no other country but Nigeria. We must all stay and salvage it together"

Your fellow citizen

Ogara Chidi Israel

Pls fellow NL help me wit d estimate, thanks in advance

Negotiating with d FG on increment of minimum wage is d best move, not strike.
NLC has to understand that d fuel price hike is a necessity, not some kinda punishment d govt just feels like giving to us. It has notin to do with subsidy removal but simply LACK OF FOREX.
Ok let's say that d FG suddenly reverses pump price to N86.5. Marketers still won't get forex for importatn from CBN because there's no money. They're still gonna source for it at unofficial rates and WON'T sell at that N86.5 because they'll be making losses. So fuel will still be scarce n we'll still queue to buy at N180-300.
Forex reserves have been depleted and int'l price of oil has slumped.

Total deregulatn is our last hope.

Btw, where was NLC when workers were being owed for months w/o pay?
Wat r u saying?

Most Nigerians don't realise we've been living in The Matrix. This subsidy removal is the red pill that may wake us up to reality.
We are poor. We are broke. We've been raped, pillaged, looted and left for dead.
All these years our economy has been sustained on the junk food of corruption. We have kwashiorkor but because we look chubby we think we are healthy.
Those two bedrooms in Abuja going for N700 million. Those make up artists charging 500k and pre-wedding photo shoots for 700k. Aso ebi for 90k. Buying Rolexes and Ferraris. Range Rover Sport all over Lagos like keke napep.
It is all fake. It's all a mirage. We've all been living off the spoils of corruption. That's why the country is so hard now. No money circulating. Because no money to steal and rent flats and shops for girlfriends. For civil servants to pay bogus tithes of N500k. For senators to spray dollars at their daughters' weddings. For lagos big boys to spend N2m every Friday night at nightclubs.
It's time to face reality. The party is over. Now we may see the real Nigeria and Nigerians.
Now that money will go into our roads and bridges and hospitals. It will benefit those who don't have a rich corrupt uncle with connections in oil and gas. Those who can't travel to Dubai to celebrate birthdays. Those who don't know what Coldstone ice cream tastes like.
Hopefully the real estate markets will crash. The thieves with 15 houses in abuja will be forced to sell them fast for cash. I would prefer if EFCC seized and auctioned them, though.
All those in the service industry will have to revaluate their pricing. You can't charge 500k to paint faces anymore; free money don finish.
Welcome to the real world
I wish there are no looters in the system
