Ghana denies using Juju against Dream Team V July 15, 2011 Sports By Ime Bassey, just back from Kumasi As Nigerians look for ways to ease their pain following the U-23 Eagles exist from the All Africa Games in billed to take place in Maputo, Mozambique in September, spokesman of Ghana Football Association, GFA, Randy Abbey, has revealed that the GFA did not use charms (juju) as claimed by Nigerian officials. Speaking with Saturday Vanguard Sports in an exclusive interview, Abbey stressed that Nigerians should not lay claim to charms as the reason for their loss but an issue of misinterpretation and incompetence. “First of all, what happened was very very embarrassing to say. The thing is that somebody had eaten food in a take-way pack and left it in one of the lockers presumably the last time the stadium was used, and the cleaners in the stadium did not do work well enough by cleaning it, so, it attracted fungi. That was what the Nigerian team saw and was opposed to. “It is just an issue of negligence in relation to who was supposed to clean the place and that of the stadium manager most especially for the fact that it is an international match. “The most important thing is that, when the Nigerian team drew the attention of the match commissioner, the sports authority opened a third dressing room but the Nigerians refused. They insisted that they would use the corridor instead of the locker room that was clean. “It was embarrassing for us as a country to make such kind of mistake. For me, I do not believe in charms (juju) to play football because if it works, all of us should know the country that would be winning the World Cup by now. I will find it a bit outrageous that people in this modern world would want to blame charms (juju) for their defeat,” Abbey revealed. He reiterated his joy on the Black Meteors victory, “we are happy that we won. We expected the victory more so as we lost out in the Olympics. The All Africa Games was the only competition left for us. We are therefore excited to qualify ahead of Nigeria, knowing full well our rivalry in football,” he added. www.vanguardngr.com/2011/07/ghana-denies-using-juju-against-dream-team-v/ |

Imo 10,000 jobs: Only 2,035 genuine – Committee 6 July 13, 2011 News Owerri – The Imo government 10,000 jobs verification committee, on Tuesday submitted its report to government. The committee found out that only 2,035 of the 10,000 jobs said to be given to youths were genuine. The Ikedi Ohakim-led administration in its last week in office, announced the job offer, which Gov. Rochas Okorocha suspended in June and set up the verification committee in that regard. Presenting the report to the Secretary to the Government of Imo (SSI), Prof. Anthony Anwuka, the committee’s Chairman, Mr Charles Onuoha, said that only 8,211 beneficiaries of the said employment scheme showed up for verification. Onuoha said that the verification which covered the period between Oct. 2010 and April 2011, was thorough and devoid of any victimisation. The chairman said some of the offers were “politically- motivated” because some public officers involved in the exercise compromised their positions. According to him, some of those said to have been given the appointment scored less than 40 per cent in the aptitude tests conducted for the job while others did not take the examination at all. He added that other flaws that characterised the job offers were indiscriminate offer of appointment letters, bribery, and certificate/ documentation discrepancies. Receiving the report, Anwuka commended the committee for carrying out the exercise with high sense of responsibility, promising that government would study it and act accordingly. According to him, the verification was not meant to be a witch-hunt, but to put the record straight for posterity. Anwka gave an assurance that the 2,035 persons cleared, of security of their jobs, and advised those not cleared to take advantage of the youth empowerment programme initiated by the present administration. He directed all those believed to have been offered appointments under the much-advertised 10,000 job offers, to check at their local government headquarters, to find out whether theirs were genuine or not. Orji sets up c’ttee to revive Aba Textlile Mills 0 July 7, 2011 News BY Anayo Okoli Umuahia— IN an effort to provide jobs for the youth, fight crimes and boost Abia State’s economy, Governor Theodore Orji has inaugurated a 6-man advisory committee to revive the moribund Aba Textiles Mills. Speaking while inaugurating the committee, Governor Orji said the action was in line with his promise to reactivate moribund industries in the state. According to him, the reactivation of the textile mill will boost business and employment and restore the glory of Aba as the Japan of Africa. The governor urged members of the committee to come up with ideas on how to revive the mill. He also expressed the hope that inauguration of the committee would mark a new dawn for the industrial revolution of Abia State, saying he would make Aba the Dubai of Nigeria. He explained that he carefully selected the committee members with wide knowledge of textile business to ensure the success of the project. The governor also disclosed that the committee handling the reactivation of Golden Guinea Breweries was making appreciable progress and hoped that the project would be realized before he left office. Orji regretted that Aba Textile Mills had been abandoned by successive governments but assured that his government could not afford to allow the company die. In his remark, chairman of the committee, Mr. Godwin Osuala, thanked the governor for finding them fit to serve and assured that the committee would do its best to revive the company which provided employment to about 1500 workers when it was functioning in 2000. Osuala, however, urged the governor to provide the committee with the necessary logistics to work with. www.vanguardngr.com/2011/07/orji-sets-up-cttee-to-revive-aba-textlile-mills/ |
