I don't think shea butter darkens the skin. Maybe you weren't using an SPF moisturizer when you were using it.

I use it for my feet, hands and other parts of my body but never on my face b/c it's too thick and clogging for the face.

I've seen it used on babies and it really makes their skin glow. So maybe it works. Personally don't like the natural smell, or the feel.
