President Muhammadu Buhari has directed the Defence Headquarters to commence immediate investigation of incident involving the troops of 93 Battalion, Takum, Taraba, which resulted in the death of three police officers and a civilian.

The Chief of Air Staff, Air Marshal Sadique Abubakar disclosed this when he briefed State House correspondents at the end of the meeting of the National Security Council, presided by President Buhari at the State House, Abuja, NAN reports.

Source had reported that the Force Public Relations Officer, DCP Frank Mba, had earlier issued a statement that the Police Operatives, led by ASP Felix Adolije of the Intelligence Response Team (IRT) reportedly came under sudden attack by soldiers along Ibi–Jalingo Road.

Mba said that the operatives, who were taking the arrested suspect, Alhaji Hamisu to the Command Headquarters in Jalingo, were shot at severally by the soldiers in spite of sufficient proof that they are Police personnel on legitimate duty.

He said that three Policemen comprising one Inspector and two Sergeants and one civilian died as a result of gunshot injuries sustained in the attack while others sustained serious gunshot wounds.

According to him, the soldiers thereafter released the handcuffed suspect, Alhaji Hamisu, who is now on the run.

The Chief of Air Marshal has now said: “The council also decided that the unfortunate incidents in Taraba State in Ibi, a committee will be setup under the Defence Headquarters to critically look into the circumstances that led to the unfortunate incident.’’

Abubakar also revealed that the council evaluated the current strategy of managing internal security operations across the country.

According to him, the council expressed satisfaction with the current efforts aimed at restoring law and order in the country.

“We are making substantial progress in all the areas of conflicts,” he said.

On the issue of using technology and drones to fight crimes as earlier pledged to the south-west leaders by the President, Abubakar said technology would continue to play a very critical role in resolving security challenges in the country.

“All the services are using one technology or the other in order to ensure that our country is secured.

“So, security will continue to play a role and we are also looking at other areas of technology that are not currently in use to ensure that we put together all that is required to ensure the security of Nigeria and Nigerians,’’NAN quoted him as saying.

The chief of air staff also reassured Nigerians that the armed forces of Nigeria and other security agencies would continue to work to ensure the security of Nigerians and to also ensure that no individual or group of individuals undermined the territorial integrity of the country.

The President of the Christian Association of Nigeria, Rev. Supo Ayokunle, has said he was never attacked by Fulani bandits.

The Personal Assistant to the CAN President, Rev. Paul Jenfa, said the clarification became necessary following a misrepresentation in a recent media report.

Jenfa clarified that Ayokunle was not the victim in the incident which he reportedly recounted in the media report.

He said Ayokunle only made reference to the case of a Lagos-based Baptist Church pastor, who was attacked by Fulani bandits in Maya, a town between Iseyin and Abeokuta, while returning from Okeho where he attended the burial programme of his father.

Jenfa clarified that in response to a question on whether he believed the explanation by the authorities that foreigners were responsible for the kidnappings in the country, Ayokunle said, “I am not part of the law enforcement agents. (But what I know is what practically happened to me).


“On June 14, 2019, I was at Okeho, Ayetoro to preach at the burial of the father of one of my pastors. On June 15, he returned to his base in Lagos. On the way, between Iseyin and Abeokuta in the Maya area, herdsmen attempted abducting him and others in the vehile.

“It was just God’s grace and anointing that didn’t allow herdsmen to finish them or take them away.

“People gave him gifts, including money, which they (the herdsmen) saw in the vehicle, and that was why he was not abducted. They were satisfied with the money in the vehicle.

“One of them (herdsmen) put a gun to the head of the pastor; the pastor thought the end had come.

“The abductors; does it matter whether they are foreigners or citizens within the country? They are criminals fomenting trouble and making life difficult for others.”

The Benue State Commissioner for Water Resources and Environment, Mr Dondo Ahile, has said that a three-year-old boy drowned in a flood as a result of the downpour in the early hours of Thursday in Makurdi.

Ahile told newsmen, while assessing the impact of the flood in Wurukum area of Makurdi, that the child was simply identified as Tervershima.

He said that the incident was reported to him during the inspection of the area.

According to him, the state government has identified the causes of the flood to include blocked culverts and narrow channels that are too small to handle the volume of water in the affected areas.

He said that the government would do everything to tackle the menace.

He appealed to people living along flood-prone areas to vacate such areas as soon as possible to prevent further disasters.

“As a government, we will try to address some of the causes before the main rain comes.

“People living along flood-prone areas should vacate the areas as government cannot be able to relocate everybody at a time,” he said.

The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) correspondent, who visited some of the affected areas, reported that the flood submerged Wurukum Market, Wurukum Park, Living Faith Church, and Pleasure Travels Park in Wurukum.

Other places affected are Gyado, Villa village, Villa Suit Hotel, parts of Idye and Achusa village, amongst others, causing destruction to many houses and property.

Flooding has become an annual challenge to the people of Makurdi.

In 2017, flood destroyed many houses and property in over 15 local government areas in the state.

A trader at Wurukum Market, Mr John Eze, said his entire shop with goods worth about N2 million had been submerged leaving him with nothing.

Eze said he was called to his shop by another trader over the development.

An Ado-Ekiti State High Court on Monday, sentenced A 53-year-old, priest, Gabriel Asateru, to five years in prison for defiling a minor.

The police charged Asateru with defilement.


The offence, contravened the provisions of Section 31 of the Child Rights Law Cap C7, Laws of Ekiti State of Nigeria 2005.

Justice Oluwatoyin Abodunde, held that the prosecution has proved its case beyond reasonable doubts.

Abodunde also ordered the convict to pay N50,000 as fine as stipulated by the Child Rights Law, 2006.

The State Counsel, Mrs Ronke Odefola, told the court the convict committed the offence on or about Dec. 23, 2016 at Ayebaju Street, Ifisin Ekiti.

She said that the convict, an Anglican Priest, defiled the five-year-old when he visited her parents.

The accused was first arraigned in January 2018 and he pleaded not guilty to the charge.

To prove the case, the prosecution called three witnesses from the office of the Department of Public Prosecution, exhibits tendered included a doctors report, defendants statements and other witnesses statements.
