Vehicles were submerged and business activities grounded following a downpour in Owerri, Imo State, on Friday.

The downpour, which lasted over two hours in the metropolis, forced traders to hurriedly lock up their shops and ran for their lives due to heavy flooding on several streets.

Areas mostly affected were Bank Road, Mbari, Douglas, Akwakuma,Orji, Control Post and Item Street.


Vehicles stalled in flooding were submerged, causing gridlock in the state capital.

The Special Adviser on Media to the Governor, Steve Osuji, said, “The problem is deep no doubt. Eight years of environmental degradation by (the) Rochas Okorocha (administration) left Imo a disaster zone. But the right men are on the job. The Owerri underground drainage master plan which was abandoned is being excavated. Soon Owerri shall be the cleanest again.”

A young Nigerian-born art student, Jonathan Adebanjo, reportedly drowned in the Thames.

Jonathan, 23, who was Illustration student at Camberwell College of Arts, London, was reported to have vanished while swimming with friends at Shadwell Basin on Tuesday evening.

His body was recovered 16 hours later early Wednesday morning.

Jonathan was one of three people who drowned in the Thames within three hours, after a 47-year-old swimmer died in Kingston and another person vanished in the water at Waterloo Bridge.


As reported by Yahoo! quoting the Evening Standard, Jonathan lived in Catford and was a keen skateboarder.

“He was due to enter his final year at Camberwell College of Arts, part of the University of the Arts London,” his distraught dad said.

His father said the young man was a competent swimmer, but added: “Nobody expected him to be in that water. It was unusual for him to go and swim there.”


Head of Camberwell College of Arts, David Crow, paid tribute, saying: “Everyone who met him was charmed by his sweetness and individuality of spirit — he was a winning combination of dreamy, funny and thoughtful.

“It is a tragedy we will not see his talents develop further.”

The RNLI, police and London Ambulance Service have all renewed warnings about the dangers of swimming in cold water, the medium has reported.

:oThe hostilities between the National Chairman of the All Progressives Congress, Adams Oshiomhole and Edo State Governor, Godwin Obaseki, seemed to have come to an end on Wednesday.

The duo met at the Presidential Policy Retreat at the Council chamber of the State House, Abuja.
Before the retreat started, they were asked by some photojournalists in the council chamber to shake hands and pose for snapshots.

The two of them complied and posed for the photograph with the Chief of Staff to the President, Abba Kyari and Ekiti State Governor, Kayode Fayemi.
Fayemi replied the photojournalists with “We are not quarreling here”
Obaseki and Oshiomhole had been at loggerhead over the timing and manner of the proclamation of the Edo State House of Assembly.

Ghanaian actor, Prince David Osei has stated that he can never allow actresses with bad breathe to come close to him.

According to actor, such actresses are dangerous to his health because he has a bleeding gum.

“We are doing a creative work so you can’t be smelling and get close to me, your mouth can not be smelling, for me I’ll say it. I’ll call the director aside and tell him I have a bleeding gum, no I can’t do it, it’s my health,” the actor said in a recent interview.

He added by narrating how he once refused to kiss an actress in a movie

“I did it to some girl, her mouth like manhole, it was smelling so bad. On that instance, I called the director and told him I have a bleeding gum so I can’t do it”, Prince David Osei said.

He added that it finds it unfortunate that he is approached with such circumstances despite being the type that does everything possible to maintain a fresh breathe.

The Inspector-General of Police, IGP Mohammed Adamu has ordered the Deputy Inspector-General of Police in charge of Force Criminal Investigation Department (FCID), DIG Michael Ogbizi to immediately take over the ongoing investigation into the alleged case of rape.

The IG explained that the order will ensure a speedy, thorough, fair and impartial investigation into the case of rape reported by Mrs Busola Dakolo against Pastor Biodun Fatoyinbo of Commonwealth of Zion Assembly (COZA).

According to a statement in Abuja by the Force Spokesman, DCP Frank Mba, the DIG is also expected to take over the investigation of the complaint made by Pastor Biodun Fatoyinbo against the Dakolos.

The DIG, as part of investigation, will also provide a personal supervision to all parts of the investigation to ensure justice and fair-hearing to all the parties, with each case being treated purely on its merit.

Operatives from the Special Tactical Squad (STS) from Abuja had on Saturday served a letter of invitation on the residence of the Dakolos.

Following criticism that trailed the manner in which the letter by Operatives from STS unit was served on the Dakolos, the Police said: “The IGP has directed that the procedure which the Police operatives adopted in serving Invitation Letters on Timi and Busola Dakolo on Saturday, 20th July, 2019, be subjected to rigorous and discreet scrutiny to ascertain its conformity with Police Standard Operating Procedure and International Best Practices.”

The Police chief while urging members of the public and the parties involved in the cases to remain calm and patient, assured of professionalism in the matter.
