Buhari noticed that issues of graduate employability and aptitudes are appropriate issues picking up pulling forces broadly and universally and are unmistakable on the front burners of talk on advanced education and the fate of work.

In his comments, the Vice-Chancellor of the college, Prof Joseph Fuwape, encouraged the graduating understudies to stay engaged and persevering so as to possess the prime places of administration in the nation.

Nigerian President, Muhammadu Buhari has approached the university in Nigeria to be progressively proactive in guaranteeing that their graduates are employable.

He said numerous Nigerian graduates were being depicted as unemployable by some employers of labour, saying this was troubling to his system.

Buhari expressed this at the 31st Convocation of the Federal University of Technology, Akure, Ondo State, on Saturday.

As stated by him, the present system thought about training as the foundation of national improvement with universities as the zenith of education, "being the engine of knowledge generation and dissemination."

He stated, "In the present globalized education economy in which the riches, key significance and positioning of any nation in the comity of countries is resolved to a great extent by its knowledge economy list, my desire is that our universities will utilize the instrumentality of their tripartite standards of teaching, research and network commitment to develop Nigeria into a fortunate situation among countries of the world.

"In such manner, government anticipates that Nigerian universities should deliver graduates pervaded with the essential information, capabilities, frames of mind, and abilities to be dynamic job players as we continue looking for financial and mechanical advancement.

"I anticipate that universities should give genuine consideration to their standard not exactly complimentary appraisal of the alumni of our universities by bosses of work. Certainly, we can not be agreeable when results of our strongholds of learning are being depicted as 'unemployable', showing absence of occupation availability.

Politics / Zambian President Wants U.S. Ambassador Out Of Zambia For Forfending Gay Couples by godlyguy(m): 10:17am On Dec 22, 2019
Zambian President Edgar Lungu wants the U.S. ambassador to leave the country after the diplomat criticized the African state for sentencing a gay couple to 15 years behind bars for having a consensual relationship.

“We have complained officially to the American government, and we are waiting for their response because we don’t want such people in our midst,” Lungu said Sunday in comments broadcast on state-owned ZNBC TV. “We want him gone.

U.S. Ambassador Daniel Foote said last month that he was “personally horrified” after the high court sentenced the two men and called on the government to reconsider laws that punish minority groups. The move was particularly disturbing as “government officials can steal millions of public dollars without prosecution,” Foote said.

The U.S. provides $500 million in aid to Zambia yearly, according to Foote.

“We are saying no to homosexuality,” Lungu said in comments broadcast by Sky News earlier this month. “When you are tying it to aid, if that is how you are going to bring your aid, then I’m afraid the west can leave us alone in our poverty. And we’ll continue scrounging and struggling.”

Department didn’t immediately respond to an email seeking comment.

Many Igbo feel politically and economically marginalised, and the government’s hardline stance is not helping.

50 years after Nigeria’s then Eastern Region declared itself the Republic of Biafra, sparking a brutal and costly three-year civil war, the country again faces a separatist challenge. Across the Igbo south east, there is resurgent agitation for an independent Biafra state.

President Muhammadu Buhari’s forceful response to the agitation has been counter-productive, inflaming passions and boosting separatist sentiments. The government needs to change course and prioritise dialogue over coercion.

The starting point of any response is to understand the agitation’s roots. They include political and economic grievances, a deep sense of collective victimisation among the Igbo, and the failure of south east politicians to provide good governance and development.

[Biafra 50 years on: Remembering, regretting, repeating history?]

Roots of the agitation

Separatists contend that since the Biafra War, the Igbo, one of the country’s three major ethnic groups, have been marginalised. They note that no Igbo has been elected to lead the country since Nnamdi Azikiwe’s ceremonial presidency in the 1960s or to be vice president since Alex Ekwueme (1979 to 1983).

This persisted even under military rule. The only Igbo head of state in this period, Major General Johnson Aguiyi-Ironsi, was killed after only seven months.

Administrative structures decreed by northern-led military governments have also undermined the region. Of the country’s six geo-political zones, all but the south east contain either six or seven states. The south east has just five, while it accounts for only 96 of Nigeria’s 774 local governments. Representation in government and the flow of federal resources are based on these administrative units.

Today, the south east, like much of the country, suffers deficient and dilapidated infrastructure and widespread youth unemployment. But many believe this is structural. They point out that as federal revenue allocation is based on number of states and local governments, the south east receives the least of all zones.

Unequal treatment

Under Buhari, political grievances have deepened. With no Igbo heading any of the military and security services, many argue the region has no voice in key organs such as the National Defence Council (NDC).

“We are like second class citizens, of the same status as a colonised people, except that this is internal colonialism, caliphate colonialism”, asserted a retired Igbo military officer.

The situation has also been aggravated by Buhari’s statement shortly after coming to power that “constituencies that gave me 97% cannot in all honesty be treated, on some issues, with constituencies that gave me 5%”.

To many in the south east, who mostly voted for former president Goodluck Jonathan, that statement raised fears that the president would not accord them equal treatment with the north.

They now see their fears confirmed by some government actions. For example, when the domestic intelligence agency the Department of State Services recruited recently, it hired just 44 new employees from the south east compared to 165 from the north west. Similarly, the south east is nearly completely excluded from a proposed national railway development plan.

Victims of history

Along with political and economic grievances, separatist agitation is driven by a strong feeling of collective victimisation. In 1949, the prominent Igbo leader Nnamdi Azikiwe asserted “it would appear that God has specially created the Ibo people to suffer persecution and be victimised because of their resolute will to live”.

Almost 50 years later, another distinguished Igbo, Chinua Achebe, claimed that “Nigerians of all other ethnic groups will probably achieve consensus on no other matter than their common resentment of the Igbo”.

These feelings have been deepened over the decades by recurrent rioting in the north in which Igbo have suffered great losses. Mostly notably, over 30,000 Igbo in the north were killed and two million fled back to the south in 1966 in the “Igbo pogrom” that followed the January coup and July counter-coup.

During the Biafra War, all other groups rallied round the federal government. The conflict killed about two million people, mostly Igbo, and more died during post-war riots and conflicts in the north.

Some northern leaders have argued that the Igbo were targeted because of their entrepreneurial success not their ethnicity, but such explanations offer no consolation. As one Igbo civil society leader said, the current separatist agitation is “a rejection of the Nigerian state by a group that feels already rejected by that state”.

South-eastern governance failures also fuel unrest. Local political leaders have largely failed to harness the region’s resources, create sustainable employment and engage youth.

As the president-general of the apex Igbo socio-cultural organisation, Ohanaeze, Nnia Nwodo said, Igbo youth “have passed a vote of no confidence in us their fathers”. The agitation therefore represents not only a protest against the state but a rift within Igbo society.

Flawed responses

Successive government responses have been generally intolerant and combative. The government generally lumps the separatist movement together with Boko Haram and the militant Yoruba group the O’odua People’s Congress (OPC) as “extremist groups” threatening national security.

Under President Olusegun Obasanjo, the administration arrested the leader of the Movement for Actualization of the Sovereign State of Biafra (MASSOB), Ralph Uwazuruike, charged him with treason and detained him from 2005 to 2007. Police clashed with MASSOB members repeatedly, killing many.

President Buhari’s government has been similarly intolerant. In November 2015, he issued a “serious warning” that: “The corporate existence of Nigeria as a single entity is not a subject of debate and will not be compromised”. On another occasion, he said: “For Nigeria to divide now…it is better for all of us to jump into the sea and get drowned”.

Following from this hardline stance, security agencies shut down the unlicensed radio station, Radio Biafra, operated by the separatist group Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB). They have banned pro-Biafran newspapers, arresting and brutalising non-compliant vendors. These measures have driven many publications off the streets, but have not curbed the even more vigorous social media.

Security agencies have also broken up rallies and meetings, killing and arresting scores. An Amnesty International report alleged that security forces murdered at least 150 agitators between August 2015 and August 2016. The army rejected the report, but separatists say the number of deaths was even higher.

In January 2017, when agitators organised a rally in “solidarity” with new US President Donald Trump, police reportedly killed 11 participants and arrested more than 65. Many are still in jail.

The government also arrested IPOB leader Nnamdi Kanu in October 2015. He was arraigned and granted bail, but despite court orders for his release, he was held in prison until April 2017. Kanu’s prolonged detention turned him into a hero and increased IPOB membership.

Outlook for the future

The agitation’s future trajectory is unclear. Much depends on the federal government. Further repression will earn the separatists more local sympathy and support and could push them to more desperate actions. If there is no progress towards constitutional, administrative and policy reforms that would respond to the demands of the south east, the agitation could escalate.

Further demonstrations and government crackdowns could further strain the already over-stretched security forces, diverting resources needed to fight Boko Haram and insecurity elsewhere.

Nobel laureate, Wole Soyinka, has counselled the government to ask the agitators: “What are those things we can do to make you content, to make you feel part of this entity [Nigeria]… What can we do to make them feel that they belong and are not alienated?” The federal government should heed that sage’s advice.

In the short term, the government should refrain from further threats of “crushing” the agitation and free unconditionally the hundreds of protestors currently imprisoned. It should also reassure all regions it will allocate resources and develop infrastructure equitably.

In the longer term, the National Assembly should resume its stalled constitution review and pass provisions that would guarantee all citizens a stronger sense of national belonging and redress the imbalance in administrative units between the zones. This is a key demand of south easterners and one already endorsed by the leaders of most other zones.

The leaders of the south east must also respond to their region’s needs by focusing on economic development and curbing massive youth unemployment. The south east governors’ recent initiative towards integrated regional development is a welcome step that should be pursued vigorously.

50 years after the south east attempted to break away, the country remains fragile. Its democracy is still unstable, as demonstrated by the recent coup rumours as President Buhari is reportedly very ill.

[Nigeria: Coup rumours reflect rising distrust in Buhari’s absence]

At a 25 May colloquium on Biafra: 50 years after in Abuja, Acting President Yemi Osinbajo said the greatest responsibility of Nigerian leaders today is to give a pathway to unity in diversity. The country’s leaders must work harder to build bridges, close cleavages, and achieve a more cohesive country.

If they fail, separatist agitations will grow even stronger.

In addition, Van Drew has condemned comments Trump made about four congresswomen that the president dubbed "The Squad," calling the remarks racist and has pushed back on Trump's attempts to direct courts to invalidate the Affordable Care Act.

"We worked together across the aisle," McCarthy said of Van Drew, despite the fact that the two have disagreed on 54 percent of legislative issues.

"Looking forward to working together now, same party. We only need 18 more to be the majority, and I think we will do that very soon."

Former chairman of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), Prof Attahiru Jega, has said that the prediction of US Central Intelligence Agency (CIA) on the disintegration of Nigeria will come to pass if care is not taken.

The former INEC boss stated this on Wednesday while speaking at Tell Magazine’s 20 years of democracy conference in Abuja.

Recall that the CIA had predicted that Nigeria would disintegrate in 2015 following the outcome of the presidential election.

Former President Goodluck Jonathan accepted his loss to President Muhammadu Buhari, a move many said averted anarchy and saved the country.

Speaking at the conference, the former INEC chairman said the country has witnessed some “reversals” in the progress it made during the 2015 elections.

He said that no matter how hard he tries, some people would still find faults in his government. Adding that as a leader, he has to accept the challenges of leadership and learn to live by them.

The president said this while fielding questions from reporters after receiving some of his aides and close friends who visited him at the presidential villa in Abuja in commemoration of his 77th birthday.

“I think I come to accept the realities of leadership in Nigeria, you can only try, it is a terrific country, no matter what you do, there are people on daily basis that look for your faults and go to the press, so you have to learn to live by that,” he said.

A woman from Henan province, China took her proposal to a whole new level by adding a house deed and BMW keys into the mix.

Xiaojing, a 24-year-old woman who works in the designing field, popped the question in a very elaborate setting during the couple’s one-year anniversary on Dec. 11 at the place where they first met, according to AsiaOne.

In order for this to work, Xiaojing had convinced her boyfriend, Xiaoke, to go to the exhibition hall at the cultural exhibit in Henan to pick up something for her, the woman told Chinese media.

However, Xiaoke was surprised to find his girlfriend inside of the exhibit hall wearing a wedding gown, surrounded by balloons. And to top it all off, she also added a house deed and a set of BMW keys into her proposal, all with the support of her parents.

“I prepared all of this. There’s a car and a house deed here,” she said while presenting a bouquet of flowers to her boyfriend. “It doesn’t matter if you have them or not, I still want to be with you. Will you marry me?”

Surprised by her gesture, Xiaoke replied, “This is so unexpected. Yes, I will.”

“He’s usually the one taking care of me and making sacrifices for me,” Xiaojing explained. “I really want to do something for him.”

“What I want — more than material goods — is love,” the woman said. “I don’t think that it always has to be the man in the relationship providing [a house and car]. More than that, I want him to be devoted and caring after our marriage.”

Politics / Address Allegation Of North’s Dominance In Cabinet, Shehu Sani Tells President by godlyguy(m): 9:22am On Dec 18, 2019
The Executive Director of African Centre for Peace and Development, Comrade Shehu Sani, has urged President Muhammadu Buhari to address the allegation raised by southerners that his government is dominated by northerners and Muslims. He gave the charge yesterday while receiving members of Bushara Baptist Church led by Rev. Joel Yohana in Kaduna where they presented him with the book, “77 Years Silent Exploit in Northern Nigeria: The untold story of Bushara Baptist Church from 1948-2019.”

The representative of Kaduna Central in the eighth Senate also asked the president to address the claims by northerners that his government was only executing projects in the south. He therefore called on northern leaders to urgently “convene a conference to unite people of all religions and also to talk truth to themselves on the need to go back to Sir Ahmadu Bello, the Sardauna of Sokoto’s philosophy of peace and unity.”

Sani, who expressed concern at the divisive character of the body polity, stated: “It is over 100 years of amalgamation in Nigeria and we are still talking about north and south, Muslims and Christians. If there is good governance, nobody will care about wherever you are from.

“But in our society and nation today, because of the sensitivity of religion in our lives and in our history, it is important all religions must have equitable representation in the affairs of governance if we are to be peaceful. “It is also unfortunate that the solid foundation for unity and peace laid by the late Sardauna of Sokoto and the founding fathers of Nigeria was not followed by subsequent leaders who themselves as representatives of their ethnic groups.”

He went on: “The Baptist Church in Hadeja Road in Kaduna is an example of unity, peace. It is a church that is right in the middle of a Muslim community and they are living in peace with everybody. That is worthy of commendation.”

Politics / $30b Loan: Buhari Is Not A Good Businessman — Atiku by godlyguy(m): 12:37am On Dec 18, 2019
Former vice president Alhaji Atiku Abubakar who is obviously still embittered by the gross miscarriage of justice against his petition challenging president Muhammadu Buhari’s victory in the last presidential election, has come in full force against the Buhari administration over its insistence in borrowing $29.6 billion, and the Senate's willingness to approve the President's request.

Atiku who said he is still in disbelief that the Buhari administration is still pushing for the loan despite the dangers it poses for the future of the country, said its high time Nigerians begin to hold leaders accountable even those representing them in the Senate.

He said the problem with the Buhari administration is not even the borrowing, but the total lack of vision, capacity and good sense of judgment in its decision making. He added that under such an inept government, even $1 trillion won't still be enough.

Below is the full statement of the former vice president as shared on his Facebook page;

John Quincy Adams once said “there are two ways to conquer and enslave a nation. One is by the sword. The other is by debt.” He may have very well been referring to Nigeria of the last three years.

Barely two weeks ago, I warned during my Founder’s Day lecture at the American University of Nigeria, Yola, that Nigeria had taken almost as much foreign debt in the last three years, as she had taken in the thirty years before 2015 combined. Now that is frightening. And very true.

Frightening, not just because of the amount, but because after such unprecedented borrowing, we have emerged as the world headquarters for extreme poverty and the global capital for out of school children. It begs the question: what were the funds used for?

I have said it time and again. The business of government is too serious to be left in the hands of politicians. We must all ask questions because if they throw away the future, it is not going to be their future they are throwing away, it will be all our futures.

The fact that Nigeria currently budgets more money for debt servicing (₦2.7 trillion), than we do on capital expenditure (₦2.4 trillion) is already an indicator that we have borrowed more money than we can afford to borrow. And the thing is that debt servicing is not debt repayment. Debt servicing just means that we are paying the barest minimum allowable by our creditors.

And while spending 50% of our current revenue on debt servicing, this administration wants to take further loans of $29.6 billion! To say that this is irresponsible is itself an understatement.

Seun your hustle is NOW paying you in dollars... OP is it true that seun makes $10m annually?
megawealth01:
Seun Osewa, the Founder of Nairaland needs to be awarded with a lifetime achievement award in the Nigerian Tech Space

Nairaland, arguably Africa’s largest forum is an online community that is ranked among the best public forum in African ranking and boasts of about 2.384 million registered users and about as much or perhaps more unregistered users. It was created in March 2005 by Seun Osewa who runs the site till date.

Seun Osewa is a Nigerian in his thirties who resides in Ota, Ogun state Nigeria.

Like almost every young Nigerian, Seun aspired to be his own boss but unlike most young Nigerians, he never backed out even after hammerings of frustrating magnitudes. Judging from the movie, ‘The Social Network’, Mark Zuckerberg may have had an almost rosy journey to entrepreneurship, but not Seun.

Nairaland was neither the first nor second project embarked upon by Seun, but he never stopped until he got it right.

Seun stands above most Nigerian big-shot site owners in so many ways, but one of which struck me is his online presence and personality. Despite the increasing success of Nairaland, Seun has continued to give customer satisfaction the greatest priority.

2.384 million Persons can comfortably constitute a country and Seun runs a site with that number of persons (I will like to know how that feels). Despite the numbers, Seun continues to strike every person fortunate enough to cross his path as a down-to-earth young man.

Seun through Nairaland has provided a portal which in turn has provided jobs for a huge number of Nigerians. A friend of mine described Nairaland as the largest supermarket in Nigeria and perhaps Africa. I agree. Cars are being bought and sold on Nairaland, real estate and other properties too. Business deals are being brokered every day, (I had my first business meeting through Nairaland).

On jobs, Seun’s words on marble are timeless. “I always tell job seekers to create their own jobs, because nobody owes them a job.” He says.

The literature section is filled with potential Nobel laureates and I even noticed a new scholarship scheme too. All this and I still can’t begin to highlight all that the site does. And to think that all these was made possible because one man dropped out of school is just magical. I have no apt words to describe the man; still I would say he is a gallant African that deserves every accolade.

The politics section gives minute by minute happenings in the politicking in Nigeria, Africa and the world at large. Seun is truly a tech superhero

President Muhammadu Buhari has said that Nigeria is a country that is very difficult to govern.

Politics / APC Dismisses Report Of Nnamani’s Planned Defection by godlyguy(m): 6:44pm On Dec 17, 2019
The Enugu State Chapter of the All Progressives Congress on Monday dismissed a media report that a former President of the Senate, Ken Nnamani, had concluded plans to defect to the Peoples Democratic Party.

It described the report as a figment of the writer’s imagination.

An online medium, African Examine, had reported that the former Senate President and a chieftain of the APC was making plans to return to his former party, the PDP.

But briefing journalists on the report, the state chairman of the APC, Dr Ben Nwoye, described those behind the rumour as haters of the APC.

Nwoye described the former Senate President as a patriotic Nigerian, whom he said worked hard for the reelection of the President, Major General Muhammadu Buhari (retd.), in the last general election.

He said that when Senator Nnamani joined the APC, he addressed a press conference and wondered why people were speculating that he was defecting.

He insisted that politics is not driven by falsehood and character assassination, adding that Nnamani had the capacity to communicate to the public about his political position.

He said, “Nnamani has remained an active and valuable member of the APC whose reasoned opinion is highly valuable to the APC both at the regional and national levels.

“Those who have orchestrated this falsehood should look for positive means of channelling their energy. Politics is not driven by falsehood and character assassination.”

Politics / Re: I Can’t Ask DSS To Release Sowore – Malami by godlyguy(m): 9:01pm On Dec 16, 2019
Falana who heads the defence team of the two men informed Malami that Sowore had, since his rearrest on December 6, been kept in the DSS custody without the backing of any detention order of court or arrest warrant.

He stated that his letter became necessary after two lawyers in the team visited the DSS headquarters in Abuja to demand Sowore’s release but were advised to direct their request to Malami.

In a terse statement making a veiled reference to Falana’s letter on Monday, Malami said in the statement issued by Gwandu, “When parties submit their issues for determination to a court of law, they lack exclusivity of decision over such issues without recourse to the court.”

“We remain guided by the established tradition and will not take unilateral decision without recourse to the rule of law,” he added.

Politics / I Can’t Ask DSS To Release Sowore – Malami by godlyguy(m): 8:52pm On Dec 16, 2019
The Attorney-General of the Federation and Minister of Justice, Mr. Abubakar Malami, on Monday, indicated that he could not ask the Department of State Service to release Omoyele Sowore from custody.

The minister said in the statement that he could not take a unilateral decision on the release of Sowore without recourse to the court, where the ‘RevolutionNow’ protests convener and his co-defendant, Olawale Bakare, are being prosecuted on charges of treasonable felony, among others.

This is contained in a statement by his Special Assistant on Media and Public Relations, Dr. Umar Gwandu, who stated that Malami was reacting to “the claim that a lawyer sent a letter to the AGF requesting the release of Mr. Sowore”.

The statement appeared to be a veiled reference to the letter by Sowore’s lawyer, Mr. Femi Falana (SAN), sent to the AGF on Friday to demand the release of the convener of ‘RevolutionNow’ protests from the custody of the DSS.

Falana’s letter dated December 13, 2019, reported by The PUNCH on Monday followed the Friday’s announcement by the AGF office that it had taken over the prosecution of the Sahara Reporters’ publisher and Bakare from the DSS.

The AGF’s takeover of the case was informed by the widely condemned invasion of the Federal High Court in Abuja by the operatives of the DSS to rearrest Sowore on December 6.
